Quite enjoying this so far - it’s fascinating to read a translation of genuine Ming dynasty work, rather than just a Ming-set story. That being said, if you’re not into classic literature in general, well, this is classic (or at least centuries-old) lit and it’s translated as such, with very formal and occasionally purple-tinged prose. I personally think it’s beautiful, and love the translator’s detailed footnotes, but while this was light reading in its time, it’s heavier than you might be expecting browsing NU.
