This story is frankly a collection of overused clichés.

Another typical case of “guy going from ugly-fat-social outcast, to handsome-sporty-center of attention” within a couple weeks, while still being an insecure mess within. The time travel aspect not adding anything out of the ordinary either. Other than the fact that MCs in these stories apparently are immune to maturing.

But even so, it did start out surprisingly good. Characters are interesting and likable, as well as the story comparatively well told. As a slice of life, this story had quite a bit... more>> of potential, keeping drama subtle, focusing on the “joy of youth” instead.

Then again, it sadly becomes more and more annoying to read the further you get.

Reasons being:

First and foremost the constant use of foreshadowing and cliffhangers.
This story is rather lighthearted, yet the author is utterly incapable of ending or starting the volumes on a light note. There is always some underlying “drama”. Worst of it being the ever dragging situation between the MC and his childhood friend. Which barely makes any progress at all over 5 volumes and is still being used as a cliffhanger at the end of every volume.

To boot, the drama feels redundant. Because it will either way just end in the most convenient way possible, without any form of consequence. Seriously, the drama in this story feels like an unnecessary filler. Most of it could be resolved if characters just started talking with each other face to face instead of making dumb choices while keeping secrets. It’s nearly comical how bad they seem to be at communicating. And I honestly doubt the drama in this story would have any driving force at all if it weren’t for people constantly eavesdropping on one another.

The romance in this story is also a long shot from being good.
If we look at characters other than the MC, instead of them wanting to pursue their own romance, the same “as long as they are happy, I’m happy just watching her/him from the sidelines” argument is repeatedly used in triangle or unrequited love situations again and again. Not gonna lie, the characters in this story do tend to feel like NTR cucks more often than not. It’s just frustrating at some point.

There are also some more minor parts that annoy me. Like the forced “harem” setting, how overly predictable the story is, and probably some more. But let’s not stretch this out too much.

In conclusion:

If you like slice of life rom-coms and none of my negative arguments rings true with you, this is potentially a story you will enjoy.
I personally though have grown weary of it, so I probably will drop reading this. Maybe try again once this LN is finished and I can skip the cliffhangers at least. <<less

Comparatively with the stuff that is put out these days, this is pretty good. The female leads are fleshed out and all entertaining in their own right. The male friends don't just feel like they're there to fill space and actually feel like individual characters. Writing is decent and the problems the characters face aren't dramatised or exaggerated for the sake of drama.

The only thing that lets this story down, like most J-novels, is the main character. Despite having a 7 year age gap between him and the other characters,... more>> he's so meek, passive and timid in practically everything he does and even thinks. And the pathetic trope of him not being aware of his 'high specs' is also at work here. Honestly, I'm tempted to rate this 3 stars because of that alone.

However, he's improving bit by bit and is also proactive in certain aspects though he's still what you'd call a beta male lol. I have faith (somewhat) that he will improve as the novels go on, will have to see if the author rewards that faith and doesn't turn this into the typical MC with a typical harem that's actually not a harem. Judging from the first two volumes, this is worth reading and was pretty fun.

Be aware that from what I've read, the romance will be dragged on and on.

Miori for the win. <<less
