As an outstanding figure in the grim reaper industry, there were no souls under the heavens that Lu Xu could not collect.

One day, he was given an undercover mission to investigate the mystery of how Film Emperor Ji Xiunian managed to escape death so many times. Seeing that the Film Emperor was going to be a mentor on an idol survival show, Lu Xu had a flash of inspiration and signed up as a contestant.

He originally planned on taking this person away after completing his investigation. However, he accidentally ended up debuting in center position.

At the age of five, Ji Xiunian was prophesied to remain lonely his entire life. The people around him were either dead or grievously hurt.

He expected to be alone his entire life and never imagined there would be an exception—not only did his luck take a turn after meeting Lu Xu, the demons and ghosts by his side had dispersed.

Ji Xiunian had never dated in the ten years since he debuted. The only scandal he had was regarding Lu Xu.

Fans thought this was just a tactic to boost a newbie’s popularity. They never imagined that the cold Film Emperor himself would come out to clarify—it’s not a scandal, he’s my destiny.

*Center position = the one who gets the most lines, center dance positions, and screen time in an idol group

wow. I am pleasantly surprised.

I was expecting yet another typical fluffy bl, most likely with a nieve idiot MC I would end up disliking and a mediocre plot/story. Instead, I got a solid supernatural plot and a well-written story, with a very likable MC and ML and a decent cast of side characters. ... more>>
Spoiler

the MC is not treated as a small child or a coddled pet, he's not compared to small animals, nor verbally belittled and called foolish and s*upid by the ML all the time. I personally dislike that they are both clueless virg*ns thanks to the Chinese BL obsession with 'purity' but it's not a big aggravation when everything else in the story is so interesting.

[collapse]

I really liked the MC interactions with the others in the idol draft and for once almost everyone gets along with him and treats him as a friend rather than plotting and scheming against him out of jealousy or ambition. the ML is outwardly cold without being obsessively overbearing or suffering from OCD, and the dynamic between the two is very intriguing. there is a bit of a mystery around the ML parents and the draft show leads to some very interesting moments once certain things are revealed. sadly, it's still an ongoing story so we haven't reached the end yet.

thank you to the translator for picking this up, I can't wait to read the properly translated version. GT keeps giving him the title as Lord Bleach (along with Lord Death), so my image of the MC tends to be that of a beautiful, smiling version of Ichigo, complete with orange hair... I liked the first few seasons of that Manga/Anime so maybe I'll revisit it while I wait for this to finish. <<less

What do you get when you combine a 200+ year old grim reaper, his very cute fat cat, ghosts, and produce 101? A wild, wild ride. Although the book is mostly lighthearted/comedic with interesting plots about the different lives of many side characters, it holds poignant reminders and reflections on the brevity but joy of life. It definitely reads more like a slice-of-life novel and the romantic progression between MC and ML is a slow buildup over the course of many events they experience together. Their feelings definitely develop over... more>> a reasonable timeline and both of them care a lot for each other. The side characters also add a lot of depth to the story. This is a book that's just enjoyable to read :) <<less

I personally found this story slightly boring. The initial setting was interesting, particularly with the modern ghosts and the mysteries. The story was pretty light despite the heavy focus on death. The entertainment industry didn't have a big role in the story.

The MC was very OP, detached, unbothered, easy-going to the extreme, hard to pin down,... and overall not very interesting as an MC (might have been better as the ML). I felt zero attachment to him which made continuing the story a bit of a chore.

the ML was more... more>> interesting and well developed than him though he wasn't interesting enough to save this story for me.

The romance was really slow and the development felt somewhat one-sided. I wasn't even slightly invested in it.

The random ghosts and side characters were more interesting to me than the MC and ML.

Lots of loose ends and unanswered questions. It was disappointing since many of the questions themselves came up in the text (some more than once) and yet they were just forgotten and left unresolved. <<less

Read this one a while back but dropped

The premise is very interesting. I actually held back from reading it for a long time, to kind of "save up" the novel just because of how much the set-up suited my tastes + the surprisingly high ratings lol. Sadly though, it wasn't as good as I expected.

there wasn't anything that the novel did wrong. It just feels really bland.

Also, both the MC and the ML are the "cool & untalkative" types. While I'm not biased against these personality types, the way that... more>> these traits were shown in the novel made me dislike it. For one, it made their interactions feel artificial. More importantly, however, it caused the entire narrative to feel really detached and monotone. So while some of the events might have been pretty fun, the boring way that they were written made it hard to engage with the text. <<less

I wish I liked this more.

The MC is too perfect. There's no sign of character growth. I mean, he learns new skills, but there's no real internal conflict to resolve. Maybe as a 200 year old death God, you've already resolved all your inner demons? But it doesn't make for a very relatable MC.

I almost wish this was written in the perspective of the ML all the time. Build up the mystery of the ethereal newbie contestant that always seems to help him out with ghosts and whatnot. And then... more>> later reveal that he's actually a death God! Who's out to drag him to the underworld! Wow!

But as it is, I think this one has a serious problem with "Tell, not show." We're constantly being told how handsome the MC is, how dashing, how good he is at his job, how talented he is at dancing and singing. There's very few scenes that actually set the scene and narrate his journey so far.

I agree with many others. 3.5 stars. <<less

It's a very well-developed and intricate plot in a human + death (spirits, ghosts) + monsters kind of modern world. There are funny dialogues but much of it is very mature and deep (not light-hearted).

I love how clear-headed and decisive MC is and this doesn't change even when ML is introduced. MC takes a while to develop feelings of *love* for ML and the same goes for ML -- initially there are some feelings of attraction/curiosity, but they get together romantically slowly. They are close for a long set of... more>> chapters (and... giving off couple vibes) before ever becoming together romantically in an official way.

Spoiler

ML's "mark of death" is actually because he has grim reaper blood. He later becomes a grim reaper and MC trains him. MC is very patient, even when ML makes mistakes in the beginning, MC guides him to figure things out by himself, instead of doing it for him, etc.

To be honest I wavered between a 4 and 5 for so long, but it's really more like a 4.5. It's a very fun read, the author absolutely succeeded at setting up the mysterious, ethereal feeling of our MC, to the point it didn't feel strange that he was OP and continuously unflappable. I enjoyed the idol competition setting and every time MC showed off his skills or his bad ass side I would squeal like the rest of the fan girls in the story. Not to mention MC's cat... more>> is absolutely adorable! ML's slow fall into crushing on our MC was super cute as well, and pining is my jam so there were no complaints on that regard.

That said, I do feel a bit unsatisfied upon reaching the end. As some others have stated, the story leaves with a lot of questions unanswered. It feels like the story was just a snapshot of a bigger story (or part of a series) and you only got to see that one section of it. For example, we never really find out how or why MC became a grim reaper, why exactly his cat lived for so long, the grim reaper organization is kinda just a backdrop to make this all happen, etc. As for MC, as much as I love his lofty, cool demeanor; the story starts and ends with him being quite an enigma. Through the story Lu Xu is continuously said to be detached from the competition or human woes because he's just straight up not human and just doing his job, so he doesn't really care because he's above it all. With his disassociating attitude, it's kind of hard to see him getting attached to any human to the point of falling in love. At best I could see friendship or mild affection, and since the story stresses that MC is detached and focused on his job, when they first got together my response wasn't "finally" but more "why him though?". While I still think ML and MC are cute together the romance feels like it's a tentative "eh might as well" or novelty on MC's part, at least in the beginning.

Make no mistake, while it has its flaws it's a terribly fun time and I had no regrets reading this. Despite the unanswered questions and how the idol competition dragged for almost the entire series; Lu Xu is too cool, Bai Mei is too cute, and Lu Xu's accidental rise to stardom is a very fun journey that I truly do recommend giving a shot. <<less

I would say that this is a pretty solid 3.5. There was a clear plot in the beginning, but once MC's objective is completed, the story starts to amble aimlessly until it eventually ends with many, many open ends and unresolved questions.

I didn't really enjoy their romance, because MC's character is very hard to tack down. He is one of those extremely easy going guys who gets along with everyone only because is detached and doesn't care for much. Even when he finally gets together with ML, it seems a... more>> little fake. The audience is never privy to his thoughts, only that he remains calm in every situation. On the other hand, ML is a more well-developed character with a known backstory.

The ending was extremely disappointing. This is one of those novels that introduces a lot of mystique only end with "and we'll weather the storms and be together happy forever."

What about everything else?!

Spoiler

Like ML's best friend and the mermaid lady? Or ML's parents? MC's past? And what the hell is Bamei some immortal demon kitty? Did they exorcise that guy with two souls? What happened after MC and ML came out together?

i really like this novel! MC is so mature and calm, and I love how he gives philosophical lessons whenever he can. ML is so cute and kind!! He cares for MC very much❤️

It's also very cute how the underworld also has their own survival show called "Netherworld 101" 🤣

Highly recommended. 5/5

Great story.💕 I like their love story than the plot itself XD probably, the author focused more on love development

The MC since he lived for around 200yrs, he's a litte stoic and you can't see what he's thinking. Whereas the ML is not the typical ML, his personality is more in line with the usual main chara. ML is good natured, gentleman and not as cold as MC.

The love development is slow but u'll be fed by a lot of dog food with their funny cp. There are some... more>> boring chapters but overall this is a good to read since there are not so many annoying characters. <<less

I don't understand why it has 4.5 stars. I think, even putting it at 4 stars is too much

I agree with the other reader, that it's 3.5

MC doesn't even have much character development. ML is interesting, but he is not that interesting to save this novel. Even I think the supposed to be "vallain" and all the mini villains here, are more interesting than mc

The story development is bland. At first, I thought this has interesting concept, but later, when MC get what he want, it get draggy,..

This novel left quite a lot of loose ends. The author is also forgetful since they often mistyped the characters' names in raw, forgot a few subplots, and even the ending left you with the impression that it was open-ended. The storytelling also fell off the curve after ... more>>
Spoiler

the ML became a Death God

[collapse]
because there's nothing at stake anymore, so this is the point where the supernatural genre slowly turned into a slice of life genre. At that point, I started to feel bored but I pushed on because I wanted to read about the unsolved subplots... But the author already forgot about them *sigh*

Also, I think that this novel would've been better if it's from the ML's POV. You'd get the full experience of jump scares he experienced, the horror vibe, the mystique-ish atmosphere of the underworld, how he fell for MC (and fell hard he did lol), the mysteries of his new job and how sympathetic he was to the clients, and how humane this novel truly is.

I can't seem to get attached to the MC, exactly because this novel is from his POV. A Death God would be cool as an ML, but when he's the MC, I just have the feeling that I was reading about an OP pet rock and his fat cat who slooooooooowly fell in love with the water that dripped above it.

It's a bunch of unrealized potentials, so I'd just slap four stars in it and be done with this XD <<less

I super duper love it! The story is so entertaining and unique on its own way. Though there are underwhelming parts its still really fun to read.

I love the characters specially the ghost haha they are the best! They all deserve to be reincarnated to a very good life!

I don't understand why others are unsatisfied because Lu Xu's doesn't have a character development when he doesn't even need one! I'll be even disappointed if he change 180 suddenly in a run when there's nothing wrong with his character setting.

I just... more>> wish that the author atleast give us a glimpse in what is LX's past, since I always feel like he's somewhat of a prince haha. Also where Ba Mei came from as he is a really special cat. I also somewhat hope that at least let JXN met his parents soul when they caught the big guy.

Too bad I can't read the extra about Yu Manman as I can't find the raw elsewhere aside from jjwcx (I'm broke) <<less

Actually, I've been reading this for a long time but it only came to chapter 151 because at that time the novel was still ongoing.

It's pretty good, even though I still want to know where MC's mole (grim reaper certificate) is and also what his past was before he became an grim reaper.

My stomach hurts, not for anyone looking for a serious fic (if the summary didn't give you a hint). The MC and ML are adorable, the MC's secretary and his cat are adorable, the ML's brother and brother-in-law are adorable.

Conclusion: This fic is hilarious and adorable.

Is this a soul-shattering, life changing novel ? Nope.

However, it served its purpose as a light hearted novel.

The concept itself is quite curious. A grim reaper as an idol is not something you come across everyday. However my main complaint is that the competition itself is not written in depth.

The relationship between MC and ML is quite endearing. No misunderstandings, no angst. When the two men realised they loved each other they confessed properly and got into the relationship quickly.
Spoiler

I was wondering how the relationship between a grim reaper and a human will work out so I really liked the twist about the ML's identity.

[collapse]

Most of the side characters were lovable as well.
Spoiler

I have personal beef with that jealous grim reaper guy. Like what exactly is your problem? Leave the two MCs alone please. I have special hatred for people who dislike seeing other people thrive. I genuinely think his punishment wasn't enough.

[collapse]

The novel was actually a nice read but personally it didn't give me a sense of satisfaction at the end of the novel.

I'm only at chapter 8 and I'm finding it difficult to keep reading. The premise looks good, but I find myself looking through the tr*sh for the important and interesting stuff.

85% of the novel so far is just people squealing over MC beauty. I am so tired of authors that just fill chapters up with random internet comments and pretend that's even remotely interesting. Like that tells me absolutely anything about the MC or the world itself.

Everything I have about the MC so far is that he's incredibly ridiculously outrageously show stopping handsome. And he's... pretty good at his job I guess? Oh and he likes to smile. mysteriously. Eight Whole chapters in. I don't think he spoke more than 5 full sentences. If that.

So yeah I... more>> think the novel has potential. Again I'm only at chapter 8, but the author is unbearable. I wish I got a little bit more of character or world building over randoms screaming about how handsome the MC is. Especially at the beginning of the novel, where I'm supposed to get to know the characters and start liking them. Smh.

_________

Edit: I'm now at chapter 86 and this novel could very well be called "Pretty privilege: The book". And even tho I'm hanging on because I want to know how things develop, the fact that I've even read so far really tells me my starndars have dropped a lot _ (´ཀ`」 ∠) _ <<less

I was attracted by the idol survival show settings of this novel with the mindset of giving it a try, I never thought I would love this novel so much.

The novel doesn't have many scheming going on between characters and face slapping scenes, which I like because I'm past that era. Like what other reviews said, I also love the interaction between characters, especially with the trainees and the ghosts. Their every little interaction just made me smile and laugh.

For both the main character and the male lead in this... more>> novel, I really like them. The main character, Lu Xu is just my cup of tea. He's OP I won't deny it, and I love that about him. He's strong, intelligent, friendly, talented, knowledgeable, wise, etc.

And the male lead, he's so cute and nice! His feelings and care for Lu Xu is just so precious in my eyes. He's talented, nice, handsome, smart, loyal, caring, and etc.

Their chemistry as a couple is perfect. Their personality is a perfect fit to me. It's amazing how the author wrote them to be like that. You can literally call them a "match made in heaven."

THEY ARE SO SWEET, SWEET, SWEET!! This is why I f*cking love slow burn romances. The different satisfaction and happiness I got when they become together after a long journey is such a nice feeling. It's just a different pleasure compared to fast/normal pace romances. It's worth the wait!!! I feel like I'm gonna drown with these sugars. Their every touch, kiss, sweet talk, hugs are making me wanna bang my head to the wall and scream.

For the ending, it doesn't quite sit well with me. Yes, it was handled right with proper conclusion and end, but it feels rushed (?) to me. I don't know if I'm the only one feeling that vibe from the ending but I said what I said. I even thought that the novel will be long with their orders and all. I guess that's it, I'm looking forward to their life as a couple, a celebrity, and as trainees.

The novel is really nice, the characters, the tone and the mood, and the settings are all written well and is my cup of tea. I heavily recommend this novel if you like idol survival show settings, slow romance, OP MC, and slice-of-life vibe. <<less

Ngl this novel is rather bland and boring. At first I really interested because its like a new concept, like a grim reaper participating in an idol survival show ? Wow that'd be interesting I guess. But nope, the survival show is boring as hell, its so flat not exciting at all, maybe its because the story supposed to be more focused on the grim reaper's work instead and thus make this part more like summarized ? And MC is too OP its became really boring.

The part about the ghost... more>> is quite interesting tho, like they actually still enjoy the same thing like normal living human being. They even have phones and able to socialize online 😂 I just cant quite imagine that peoples would burn something for their deceased relatives, one of them even burn an estate 😱 wonder how they dont even make it to the news lol

The part about the grim reaper actually kinda reminded me of the Shinigami (grim reaper) in Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) tho. Well its been long time since I last read the manga and I cant quite remember if it ever shown/mentioned in manga how the Shinigami work but if you ever watch the musical then you'd see that they work just like office worker in human world. Yeah just like in this novel, the only difference is that it set in medieval era so theres no phone yet and they have a deathscythe. Anything else is kinda similar imo, like how the dead would show smth like life reacord. Maybe the author inspired from this ? Well idk, maybe just coincidence.

I haven't finished the novel yet because the translation is still on going, but the story isn't interesting enough to even keep me hooked for the next chapter. Its doesnt make me desperate enough to mtled it.

Thats all I'd like to say. Anything else already said by DewDropsOnMe & hejikkk. 100% agree with them 👍👍 <<less
