“If I don’t die… I swear I will act on all my evil thoughts..”

Not exactly everyone’s typical thought when they’re about to die. What will a cowardly young man do when reincarnated with the evil powers to redefine his destiny? Can the natural kindness of human nature triumph over evil? Will he become the cold-blooded demon king of legend, or will he forge his own path and rain down another kind of terror?

I like how he's ruthless against his enemies and kind to his women, but I can't stand how he's way too invested in that one male friend, don't remember his name, seriously, he's just an annoying character.

All in all it starts out great with all the japanese elements, with some chinese Xianxia cultivator bs which I really don't like in general, and of course it ends the same way it always does, they have to move to some higher plane, spending hundred of years meditating while everyone they know die... more>> and for some reason they have to leave their women, I mean.. Seriously, can't you f*cking make it seem like it's hard for the woman to be away from her man without having to exaggerate? 10 months would work just as f*cking fine as 10 years, just becomes annoying, but atleast there aren't 3km giants and birds with a wingspan of 3000km and sh*t in this one, only saving grace this novel has.

And let's not forget, we have to all become Gods, chinese writers seem to be incapable of holding on to a single world, where they slowly expand it and keep hold of characters for a longer period of time, both allies and enemies, it's like they have ADHD so they're all over the place, forget the core characters that people like and focus on throwing new enemies in every other chapter instead of having long time rivals or enemies. It seems like they're afraid that the reader will uncover how shallow the enemies' personalities are so they throw out one s*upid reason after the other to make new enemies for the MC and then discard them the new chapter.
Always with the "he has uncovered some special method that makes him better than everyone else", cultivation method or something else, instead of just having the MC be cunning or hardworking to reach that goal. It's just luck and it doesn't really inspire me as a reader. <<less

What can I say... it's very hard to write a novel with a demonic MC but GDK has pulled it off beautifully.

The MC is an OP character who only reveals strength in battles and otherwise likes to keep it hidden. His various love interests keep making him h**ny of course but well we can't have a 'demonic' MC without domination of females can we? I would encourage you to read it even though some chapters might get boring long drawn or too informative, in the end it is a... more>> very good blend of fighting and echhi <<less

I like this story because the arcs are connected and almost every character matters. No side characters are really dropped and never heard from again. Some wuxia the MC makes a friend with someone and next arc you'll never see them again. Not the case here. Even random servant friends will appear out of nowhere again. The plot is different than most wuxia too. The MC doesn't just do one task at a time but has multiple objectives. It's more realistic than simply staying in a cave trying to upgrade a realm for years forgetting about all your friends. He has to help friends from starving, while exploring the unknown, and learn magic. Actually the MC is constantly working on different objectives. For example in the ch 180s:

While he is trying to upgrade his zombies, he has to fight rebels, and then he has investigate some mysterious dark church.

the concept and the story is actually fantastic. The MC is a bit impulsive when it comes to women, but other than that, he is a bit different from the regular MC’s. Personally, I felt that the story (till chap 85) was more promising than good with the pacing being a bit inconsistent. But, then again, GDK has a long way to go. As far as recommendations go, I would say that those who binge read should wait till there are atleast about 100-125 chaps to get a better gist... more>> of the series. Also, the humor in this series is pretty thoughtful. As far as rating goes, I would say 3/5 for now with a potential to get to 4/5 by chap 125. <<less

I need to explain with spoiler

The story was already bad, because:

    • Spoiler
        • too much plot armor, some people said that it was explain later that it was arrange by the devil cultivator, isn't that it self a plot armor though?
        • The MC character is really bad, and the author try to made him have character development moment but it was done very poorly, you may ask why? MC still act mostly the same afterward. MC is also too trusty of other (girl mostly). The merchant girl try to use him several time and then it turn into friendship instead, I don't get it.
        • MC is a show-off, never try to do thing secretly, like trying to hide the fact that he was want to buy a lot of food for the dwarf by buying it from multiple seller, or showing lost spell to other just to show-off, instead he like to put his egg in one basket, result in everyone can get info about him pretty easily.
        • And of course because of plot armor, no one try to take advantage of him at all, and somehow people in that world never try to pry for other secret (like the usual xianxia plot armor). I read other western style CN and secret has to be well kept or other will use it to take advantage of you for it. So this is just s*upid.
        • MC are skirt chaser, flirt with too many girl, and it become unbearable when his previous master (when he still a s*ave) said that she feel pity for him that why she humiliate him to dead, and he believe it! Even thanking her for it! Why, is it because it was the reason for you to have second life? No, she intend to kill you dude. It was just a coincidence that you got resurrected into that body, not taking revenge is ok but forgive her when she said that, it is just because the MC is lustful.
      [collapse]
I can't continue after that.

GDK is a decent novel and one of the only stories from this author that I can stand reading. It does have its issues that get worse when he travels to a higher realm but overall it is not to bad.

In the first world, the story is very interesting and flows rather well, but once he gets into the higher realm it starts to become heavily forced. Carelessness, when he knows he has many powerful enemies that will take advantage of any moments of weakness just to force conflict, is... more>> always annoying and usually will make me write a worse review then I just did. It doesn't help that the author has been abandoning his side characters and oversimplifying the story at this point as well. <<less

I agree with Sidneyvan's post for the major of what he said but I have a different opinion on it.

In comparison to other novels, I find the author had a very good balance in his own focus of what is important to the story.

Might be spoilers: The author did abandon a few plot elements but if you look at it from a macro world perspective, it could have just a small part of the bigger picture that helped the cultivation on what was truly important, his own Demon Powers.

In regards... more>> to his harem

Spoiler

The author did abandon the plot of his wife's story as the story went on, which was unfortunate, but he did include them as a group which was important to keeping what the MC valued, which was family. MC did not abandon them for power or forgotten them as the story went on, but they were still relevant to the story.

[collapse]

The ending was alot empty than I thought it would be, could have turned into longer chapters, but alot of everything that was emphasised and built up in the story had their own small part story in the end, which you don't get to see very often.

/smallrant I remember a cultivation novel that was world building, with an army emphasis on friends, and how much on interaction between different parties and his friends. In the end, this novel made it into a "unknown power" level up MC that did not even mention the army or his friends in the ending, and turned into a one guy vs one evil guy ending.

Compared with that novel, and many more which had endings that ended with only MC and abandon everyone, or lost focus, this novel gave a satifactory ending. <<less

5.0 This could be a 5 or a 1 depending on personal preferences. I liked it so its a 5. If you like Heavenly Jewel Change this is most definitely a 5. If you like WMW you will like this too. If you did not like them well let this novel is most likely a 1 for you. Here is a few words to describe the novel. There is one complaint, however. The MC become way too OP and there is not enough recall of his power to remember any... more>> of it. Also there is almost no power division. We do not know how strong he is at any point so far.

Don't read it, it's a waste of time.

Only the first half of the novel is worthwhile. The other half contains many plot holes, inconsistencies with the past writing, characters getting forgotten and have no role in the novel later on. Its sad how such a good start went this bad in the end

1/5 I wouldn't be rating it if not for the good start since I want to forget it ever existed

The Novel Is Pretty Good. The strong point in this novel, lies on the romance and the interaction between the MC and the harem. Because every girl in the novel has a personal. But its such a same that around 600 or 700-ish, the Author just added a bunch of new harem. Because of that, the old waifu interaction with the MC lessened. So if u re looking for barely passable story with good harem and comedy, this is for u

This novel is somewhat enjoyable, but man there are things where you just wonder what the hell goes through this authors mind, especially regarding to the harem. I won't even talk about the illogical consistencies of the world building.

The biggest issue I have as that for a "romance-subplot" there's barely any romance. The MC literally goes from 1 thing to another and almost never tells his girls' that he's going to be gone for months at a time. He just disappears. Only one time did he have a valid reason... more>> and that was when he was sent to another plane out of his own free will. He's about to go to another realm, and he surprisingly visited each of them to tell them.

There are so many instances of poor romance development that I wonder why the author bothered with a "harem". Might as well just leave it as an action novel and leave it at that. It would be an OK novel.

Whenever you find GDK in a harem list, just ignore it. There's nothing to see here. Try 108 Maidens of Destiny or Womanizing Mage for an MC that actually cares about his girls (not just that the author says he cares). Han Shuo will come back from months or even years long seperation and seeing his girls isn't even in the top 5 things he does within the first week or two of returning. He hides from them until he "finishes his business". Love > revenge. He could at least stop by for an evening to let them know he's safe before returning to whatever else he was doing. At least 1 time they thought he might be dead.

It's not like he can't travel from one place to another within an hour or so. During the first ~400 chapters, there's a point where he doesn't see

- the first girl he fell in love with, the girl he likes the most (supposedly) - for a whole 6 (or 9) months after they each confess their feelings and decide to be together under the radar (for valid reasons). The travel between where he was adventuring and this girl to him is like a couple hours worth of travel. It's not like he was in another dimension or anything. Nope. Just didn't visit. For no reason. He had free time. Remember that this is the girl he actually fell in love with first, and admitted that had it not been for certain circumstances, he would only be with her.

Ugh idk. It would be a much better novel if the author knew how to write even a bit more romantic moments, since girls are actually important in his early adventures. We don't want to see 1 sentence that they hung out for a few days. We want to see character interaction that isn't just everyone fawning over how great the MC is. It's like after he f*cks them, he disappears. Actually I lied he's yet to do it with

Overall, I enjoyed the story, but the pacing was all over the place. I enjoyed the character interactions, but like most cn web novels I have read, many of the characters are just marginalized or completely non existent after their arc is over.

Spoiler

After he finally got to the god continent the story seemed really rushed, especially once he left the darkness domain. It started to feel more like a summery than an actual story. The author stopped showing events and interactions and more just told you what happened. The story pretty much stops showing any character interactions. Even worse was all the forced conflict. His greatest enemies always came from the people who should have been his allies, but for some random reason they decided to treat the MC like crap and make him an enemy. Furthermore, the MC always acted extremely ignorant... enough to make you question his intelligence, making the conflict seem forced. So many enemies could have been avoided with some simple actions on his part.

At the end when the final battle was approaching, I kept thinking that there is no way that there is only 3 chapters left to fight the final battle and wrap everything up. I was right, the final battle and wrap up were beyond rushed. It could have definitely used a few more chapters to flush it out. I, personally, never understand why authors rush an ending like this. To me, it just seems disrespectful to the effort that was put into the story and the readers. There are so many scenes I would have liked to have seen, but the epilogue was essentially like 2 sentences.

[collapse]

Regardless of how rushed the ending was, I still enjoyed the book, though the last 100 chapters or so took effort to finish. <<less

I really like it. Why? Writing is mediocre, plot is nothing special, start is slow, character progression is meh. Usually, I'd rate novel such as this with 2 stars. So why did I give it 4?

Well, the main character is great. His aliment would be chaotic neutral, he is OP (later on) but never invincible (but often gets deus ex machina saves) but most importantly he isn't some moral high virg*n destiny seeking idiot. He builds a harem and he uses it. He doesn't fight stronger enemies... more>> because if he can avoid it. He tries to run away (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) if he is in danger. HE USES COMMON F*** SENSE!

First parts in academy may be a bit slow and boring, but I think it is worth a read if you are tired of your standard dickless righteous/revenge MCs but still like humor are not into anything too dark and serious. This really is a LIGHT novel for me. <<less

A really really good, unique and enjoyable story... until chapter 600 and so (first seven volumes). However, after he starts interacting with people from the God Continent and himself goes to the God Continent, everything gets boring. Super boring. And becomes a typical Xianxia novel. Can't even read anymore. So I definitely recommend the first seven volumes of this novel to be read! The later volumes? I don't know. Maybe it will get interesting later on, but I haven't read it, nor am I planning on reading anymore, so, don't know! ~

Great Demon King is written by the same author as God of Slaughter. Both MC's are cruel, pe*verted and shameless. There are many love interests, relationships can feel somewhat casual, and there are plenty of NSFW scenes, (and one non-con scene with a certain girl). Great Demon King is more toned down than God of Slaughter in terms of both violence and the pe*verted aspects. I personally prefer Great Demon King over the other. The MC here is evil and completely unapologetic about his actions and nature, with an... more>> "I do what I want" attitude.

Spoiler

This is especially the case as the novel goes on. In the beginning of the story, the MC is an underdog in a bad position, so that plus the fact that he was originally a normal person (with evil inner thoughts) in his past life means that for a while there he has to stay more low key. Once the MC starts gaining power he loosens the cap on his inner desires and becomes much more unbridled. I admit that I wasn't a big fan of the story for the first 40-60 chapters or so, but if you get past that part it gets more interesting as time goes on. I will say that the novel isn't a serious one, with a bit more comedy than you might initially expect, and the MC just kind of messes around at some points. If you want a more serious, really evil MC I'd say Leylin from WMW is much better.

The side characters' development is somewhat limited, so naturally even more of the story hinges on the MC and your personal feelings about him and his actions. In other words, if you read a bit and don't like the MC, or the violent or pe*verted scenes, you will probably struggle with the novel. If you enjoy the excessive violence and/or outright pe*vertedness, then you will likely find the novel enjoyable.

Because the MC's actions and character are more extreme, how you view the novel ends up being even more closely tied to personal preference than some other, more moderate novels.

I personally am not a big fan of romance, so the MC's casual attitude is a good thing, but on the other hand I feel like there are a few too many pe*verted scenes, and sometimes the MC comes across as a bit more childish or casual than I'd like. I admit to liking the violence though, and the magic aspect is quite interesting. I look forward to seeing how the MC develops in the future.

[collapse]

For me this novel is closer to 3 1/2 stars, but I'll just go ahead and put it at 4 for now. The translator is awesome and the release speed is good. It makes for a good casual sort of read. <<less

I've been greatly enjoying this story. If I was to compare it to any other novels at its current point would be Warlock of the Magus World (GDK much better so far) and maybe first half of Coiling Dragon. His powers are fairly unique (in general and in comparison to other stories). The biggest reason I like it is how his powers have some drawbacks. Unlike some other stories where there are none (warlock of the magus world). Now yes things fall into his lap like other stories, but it... more>> feels refreshing still. Maybe has to do with the world not sure why I feel this way still.

Again this is still the begining of the story so any flaws to the story have yet to surface. It's worth checking out to see if it floats your boat. <<less
