This might have had something to do with my recent lack of interest in romance, but this novel was really boring.

I expected it to be more career- or revenge-oriented, but nope. The focus was more on the romantic feelings between MC and ML.

Career-wise, even though the story portrayed the MC's road to stardom from the beginning. It was written unsatisfactorily. Except for the last film, the rest of them were brief, skippy, and uninteresting. It's like watching a fast-forward film. You get a glimpse of the whole story,... more>> yet the details are mostly omitted.

The interactions between other characters were so-so. Other than one friend and one manager, the rest were just acquaintances, and they didn't even interact much. The romance was so-so. Honestly, I couldn't feel the spark between the CP. It was just that the ML was really dedicated and trustworthy. That's it. The antagonists were hysterical and senseless. They're annoying, and I have no comment. Fortunately, the last film was written beautifully, so it was kind of rewarding for me to hang in there till the end. <<less

It's a really boring novel, a really really boring novel. Stuffed with the right amount of novel convenience plotting to just disgust you. Like comeon, I aware I'm reading a transmigration novel; but don't go too far away from logic and entertainment.

Anyways I'm only writing the review coz of the translator. Such a beautiful soul!! Their website is so convenient and the font is just amazing. Everything is just great, so thanks translator 🥰👍🏾

The novel is good. It's nice for a short and light read.

The only thing I didn't like was the last part. Their scandal and the way they solved it.

Spoiler

It feels like they're just there for money and fame. It feels like they did not do it for their same s*x love but just for them to keep their job where they're famous and considered as a big shot.

[collapse]

I don't know if the translation has a fault in it that made the novel relay that feelings to me, or it's just like that from start.

And in Extra 1, it's nice to know that Ji Chen (?) died in the fire in the first life. Because I thought he might have escaped or something.

The three extra chapters really concluded the novel's end. You better read it. The TL though, currently still haven't translated it yet. But you can read it MTL, it's pretty much understandable. But it's nice ig. <<less

A story that explores the showbiz world — specifically the kind of talent and skills that are required to be a good actor. The main focus of the story is the MC’s development as a person (with a lot of self-indulgent and face-slapping scenes mixed in to spice things up hehe) !

CHARACTERS: 4/5

The characters are this novel’s strengths! The MC here is particularly well developed. The only reason I didn’t give it a perfect score was that I felt that the ML lack the same level of care (making... more>> him kind of fall into the side-lines). This is understandable because the POV of the story is definitely biased to the MC, but it could have been done with breaking that POV!

Zhou Yue (MC)

The MC! His background is pretty much described in the summary so I’ll skip that! All that’s important to know is that he’s very good looking and his acting skills from his previous life has transferred into his current one. As for his personality? It’s hard to pin down, but he’s a very complex person, so that’s pretty understandable!

Xie Yifeng (ML)

Ahhh as mentioned, he isn’t really as developed as the MC! The author keeps a lot of his background hidden at first, but in the first chapter we learn that he’s the first and last person the MC thinks of when he’s dying.

Important Side Characters: My favorite side character here is definitely the agent Yang Yu LOLOL. I was a bit ehhh about him at first, but he has a lot of good scenes! One could even say he has more scenes than the ML 😂.

ROMANCE: 3.75/5

Although romance isn’t really the focus of the story (which is partly why I didn’t mind the lack of appearances from the ML as much as I would normally), the author does a great job establishing their relationship. It’s a very natural kind of build-up! Kinda wish there were more, that’s for sure, but I still found it sweet regardless!

SETTING: 4/5

I actually really enjoyed the showbiz setting for this novel! Because I can tell the author put in a lot of effort designing the movies/drama the characters portrayed and why they were and weren’t popular. I can’t say that I’m very knowledgeable about film, but everything the author said seemed researched and reasonable! Of course, this setting may be a bit too vanilla for some — but I think the character growth makes up for it!

PLOT: 4/5

This is a regression story where the MC goes back into the past to slap everyone’s faces with his foreknowledge and golden finger! It’s relatively more subdued than the Wuxia stories tho LOLOL! Since the golden finger in question is the MC’s acting skills.

RATING: 4.25

All in all, I recommend this story for someone interested in an Acting story! This was exactly the kind of story I was looking for after readings uh, what’s it called? “My Husband Has a Terminal Illness????” I wanted to find a story that explored the ups and downs of showbiz (and not just perfunctorily like the previous ones I found). This one was a perfect example of that! The first two-three arcs were particularly satisfying. And, fortunately, the author didn’t extend it too long after the premise (MC beating everyone with his golden finger) started to run dry.

RANDOM RATINGS:

  • Personal Enjoyment Level: 4/5 (I enjoyed it a lot!)
  • Literary Level: 4/5 (I really enjoyed the author’s worldbuilding and character development plots!)
  • Heat Level: 0/5 (None-Expicit!)
  • Angst Level: 3/5 (Some sad scenes but it’s not all sad)

(editing as I read on, this review will probably be a mess until I go back and edit when I finish)

First off, correcting something from the summary: ... more>>
Spoiler

it makes it sound like Zhou Yuhe died in the drama, but actually his then-boyfriend tried to kill him in a house fire but he caught on and turned it into a mu*der su*cide instead.

[collapse]

It seems like ZY has a messy relationship history which just seems unnecessarily complicated. Timeline below to gather my thoughts.

Spoiler

Age 18 - debut?

Age 19 - dating CA, bad relationship, had to give up his resources for him bc same manager

Age 20 - from c43, seems to be when JC started to pursue ZY, but not yet dating

Age 22 - started dating JC? (C1 ZY mentions he's been following him since he was 22)

Age 31-34 - first fire, when JC tried to kill him off (15 years before c1 age)

Age 46-49 - c1 age, which seems way too old for movie emperor JC (c2 ZY mentions his "true age" was late 40s)

Honestly my biggest beef with this plot is that JC, who apparently despised ZY, spent at least 9 years (!!!) dating him before trying to kill him, and then spent another 15 years (!!!) still dating him! That's way too much dedication to someone you hate, just break up after like the first year! Hot damn, this dumb as*hole deserves burning to death!

[collapse]

I initially thought the premise of the plot wasn't that great because while the technical details are pretty extensive and well explained, the relationship with the different aspects of the industry (actor - director - staff - company - investor- etc) seems somewhat imbalanced and unrealistic. However, it's actually really well written with a lot of emphasis on acting as an actual occupation. The focus is less on the shooting itself, like in usual entertainment industry novels, but instead is more about the background and aftermath of filming. The description of the first audition was very well done and you can actually get a sense of "wow, this is pretty good acting!" (unlike other stories where it's sh*t like "He laid down on the bed prop on the stage- amazing! The other actors didn't even notice the bed!"), but the author tends to just go on and on when praising ZY's acting. It does pay off later on though, when ZY 'aura' and great acting comes back to bite him in the ass when trying to take a serious literary role. On that note, I think it's great how even though it seems like things always go well for ZY, the good always ends up leading to some kind of backlash that ZY will then have to work hard to overcome again.

The characters are all pretty well written, they're not completely 2D. ZY makes me think of really well-done protagonist in a villainess/villainess transmigration manga. He's no pure hearted youth, he's shrewd and a little bullheaded, serious and studious but also has a hidden passion (most visible in the mu*der su*cide in c1 and his love for his friends (or rather, 1 friend and 1 future bf). While he starts off very skilled, he's still shown actively maintaining his skills and there's a surprising amount of character growth moments. He doesn't always have the upper hand, and sometimes he gets stuck but he strives to get through it because he doesn't want to repeat his first life of missed chances.

ML is somewhat interesting but bland. When he's onscreen, I think he and ZY are cute couple goals, but as soon as he goes away I lose interest. I despise JC (the bf from c1), but I think his and ZY's relationship is more compelling and has a lot of room for tension and growth. Lowkey I'd be interested in a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers AU with those two.

The writing is surprisingly really good at keeping track of small details, like the date and timeline. It was confusing at first, and the dating timeline still frustrates me a bit, but the events actually line up pretty well. The timeline is mentioned fairly often- the interview where someone reminds ZY that he's currently 19 and a recent graduate; the year going from 2014 to 2015; the mentions of stuff like "the so and so back in this year was like this", like mentioning how 2014 era CP fans were less toxic and more casual than now because back then it was more likely to just not be real; etc. Very nice touches.

This part is for TL issues, which I try not to affect my ratings but I still want to include:

Spoiler

The TL is good enough, but really in need of an editor. It's still readable, it just bothers me. For example, in the early chapters a series introduced as "Spy 2" was suddenly changed to "Intelligence 2", and since the TL note was at the end I spent the entire chapter confused. Later on, there's a section where it's listing things and the numbering isn't formatted uniformly (It's done as "1. (2) Third"). There's the whole "cultivation IP TLed as fairy chivalry" thing which sounds like a literal translation of some kind of term (from the description of the show, pretty sure it was probably wuxia or something). It's small things, but they can really take you out of the moment.

[collapse]

I MTLed after c97 and realized MTL is actually really bad, I can understand the story itself but the plot of the movies are beyond me. <<less

I love the acting plots in this story. It's more detailed than other entertainment setting novels. Unlike other bl novels I've read, this one has a more realistic take on homosexuality in modern times. Everyone has knowledge of it but not everyone is willing to accept and tolerate it. In this novel, the MC and ML are popular actors but they still chose to go public even when they might lose their fans. They love their fans, but they love acting and they love each other. Even when they know... more>> that they'd face condemnation, they still braved through it. Because they did not lose sight of their dreams and the things that are important to them.

My heart kinda feels heavy after reading this. You can continue on with your life regardless of other people's opinions, but you need a strong heart and mind to do so. That's why I admire these two leads. After reading this, I thought about the same-s*x couples facing scrutiny because of their relationship. I hope that they can continue to be strong and that people (who continue to hurt others because of their sexuality) would someday respect one's s*xual orientation. <<less

Good story!!! The MC is calm and smart because of the past life's experience. He have deep hate to his ex-lover but he doesn't crazy to take revenge but do everything according to situation and use his ability to counterattack.

Its really good and heart - warming in every detail especially the script of Cheng Yu and Cai Bowen that MC and ML act together.

I like how the MC's ex-lover that die in the fire together with MC in last life, in the end he dream of last life and finally... more>> understand why MC (in present) never accept his kindness. <<less

Just wonderful.

There is indeed a lot of clichés, but "clichés" arent equal to "bad quality", actually I think that sometimes, if well balanced with its genre, intention, aesthetic and dynamic, clichés can become masterpieces, maybe not the type to be classics, but for sure wonderful and heartful pieces. And I do belive that this novel is this type of case.

In my humble and personal opinion, this novel may have its shortcomes, but the etheral and overcoming feeling that the author insists in express is remarkable. Even more with the way... more>> the author decided to warp up the story, the extras are a even better way to finish everything. Not every story needs a complete end. In my view, even more web novels of this sort of plot are more sensible and logical to end with missing pieces (like not focosing in many side characters, or giving a detailed view in each character, or putting all the cards in the table and make every single drop of information clear), I think that what many readers and even myself call shortcomings of this story are actually streng points that highlight the good points of novel itself.

I would say that it will depend on the reader to take this novel as a "deep experience" (due the overcoming the past life and self beliefes) or to pass time (to pass time with the MC in the feeling of enjoying the rewards of the disasters of the past life).

And finally, I want to point out that this novel is actually interesting for it own premisse. This kind of "Reborn" is the type of "being rewarded from all the suffering of past life" (which is different from the "to get complete revenge" or "to change the world" or "to stir up things around"), so it's the kind of story that you won't actually see the MC struggling much, because he already passed through this part (that would be his last life), so what we, readers, will see is the reward that life gave him for the Struggles he had in the past. BUT even with this logic reason, the author get ahead of it and actually gave flaws to MC, just like how ML describes him once in a reality show, he (MC) have talent and ambition, and even with shortcomes he is hard working enough to always overcome and become a better self; so for the author to actually give us a "reward by life" and "hardwork on the changable life" sort of Reborn story is rlly refreshing.

(PLUS: I really like some details that the author choosed, like not ending the story with a classic marriage scene, nor making MC telling ML that he is reborn but ML suspecting and understanding it by how familiar and caring he is with MC (I rlly found it refreshing), also the fact that the author didnt threw away the antsgonists, but actually gave them regrets (they felt much more 3d to me, than just being society rich scums), even more that she choose for the MC and antagonists to have a "forget but not forgive; letting it all in the past and letting go" sort of dynamic; something like "I (MC) will live a better life with the memories of all the worst life, while you (antagonists) will live on while regreting something forever lost"). <<less

I’m honestly surprised. The title of the novel was terrible but the story was really nice. There were parts I had some confusion about and was a little bit predictable, but overall, it’s really good. The characters have depth to them, even the more “villain” ones. The romance was actually nice, had depth to it, and it did make me a little bit sad (or whatever emotion I can’t name with my tr*shy English). The story format is cliche especially if you’ve read a lot of reborn showbiz ones, but... more>> there are parts that make it stand out a lot more. It’s not obvious in the early parts, but there things it does better than most of the genre, especially on the detail, and that there are some challenges on the way. The writing is good, despite being a feel good novel (苏爽文-yeah I don’t know the English for this) - no offence to readers and writers who like this genre, I’m just saying this cause most feel good novels have shitty face slapping and plot. As a feel good novel, it definitely has some plot holes and weird plot flow, but besides that it wasn’t bad to read. I honestly even forgot that this novel was following the feel good format in the later half of the novel, because some parts felt more not-face-slapping. I’d recommend this, I think. 4.2/5. Sorry for the long review and have a nice day. <<less

What a 'fiery' start to the novel - got me hooked halfway through ch 1. I thrive on the whole idea of vengeance and I think there's a good amount in there. I especially like that the MC doesn't ultimately focus on face-slapping but more on bettering himself and making better choices. Main issue is possibly that MC is borderline mary-sue, he struggles but only temporarily (like a paragraph). Truly protected under the protagonist title. I pretty much decided to end at ch 90 seeing that MC and ML confessed,... more>> everything else unresolved in the plot (ie the ex) didnt really interest me enough to stay. Too many good things happen to the MC that the novel eventually lost the flavour to me.

Let's talk about the ML thooooo!!! I have yet to find a novel ML that respects the MC as much as this man right here. To not take advantage of MC while drunk, knowing the boundaries and actually listening when they get refused! I LOVE HIM. And he was so caring and attentive, I know for sure that this man doesn't exist in the real world with his A+++ qualities. The real MVP. <<less

For now, it gives off a typical 'reborn' story vibe. I didn't read much of 'reborn' entertainment industry stories yet so it's fine for me, but for the people that did it may seem cliche. Well idk... I'm only halfway through the story for now so it may not be objective. The relationship is really heartwarming and both the MC and ML really doting on each other, even though there hasn't happened much between them yet. Oh also... how do I say that? I really appreciate the translator's hard work,... more>> but I think I would be able to enjoy the story much more if the translation was more accurate... When I read this story, I feel many kinds of emotions... excited, distress, anxious, pity, happy, glad... I am happy for both Yuhe and Yifeng... I really sad when reading about Yifeng after the death of Yuhe in the first life. 😭 Aiyaa... good thing that both of them finally together.

Pretty good. Both the way they wrote the characters and story are engaging. I never felt that something was going on for too long that it bored me. The MC was different from other transmigration MCs since he didn't go after the people who did him wrong before and only wanted to be a great actor and I find that realistic. If any of us had the life he had we would also want to change how our life was affected instead of wasting time on worthless people.

The ML was... more>> very sweet and supportive, although he didn't have character growth I still enjoyed him being there. They had a nice and soft romance, nothing too out of the ordinary. I liked the side characters but they also didn't have much character growth but hey it was expected from a short novel. Generally speaking, the novel was good but pretty ordinary. Being ordinary isn't bad though don't get me wrong, it was still a good read. The translation was sometimes hard to understand and sometimes had mistakes but still a good translation. Thank you for your hard work, dear translator. (Ps. Can't wait for the untranslated extras)

I think the best part of the story was the last movie they shot. The story of the movie and the exposition made me emotional. The characters in the movie had depressing but realistic stories and I felt what they went through. The author does a really good job explaining the characters people play in the movies and TV shows in general. <<less

This was such a bittersweet, melancholic, poignant read.

I feel like the author was better able to grasp at my negative emotions, that even though it has a happy ending, I didn't get a cathartic release.

The novel starts with a tragic first life for Zhou Yuhe. &Amp; it also ends with a tragic movie MC acted in. I so desperately wanted MC to win. His relationship with ML was beautiful but I think the acting encompassed the bulk of the book. They just happened to act together.

It's possible to give the... more>> 2 main antagonists grace, understanding the pressure they faced from their families and in their careers. But I choose not to because I believe they were inherently selfish characters who didn't even understand love. It's difficult to sympathise with characters who express self hate & their cowardice in such destructive ways.

My rating is low because I truly didn't end this novel on a cathartic note. Perhaps I wish the antagonists suffered & wallowed more in their regret. <<less

I Loved It!! The plot maybe a bit cliche but still loved it. (๑♡⌓♡๑) It was slow in romance and all, can be a bit lagging, and boring but still good. You might not like all of it but will like most of it, just be patient and read. It is basically not a revenge plot, cause MC had taken his revenge in the past life. He just let go of past hatred gradually. Now he just wanted to fulfill his acting dream. Good read that can get a little dry but still entertaining. The intro isn't entirely accurate, the following won't be much of a spoiler since it happened in the first chapters.

MC, Zhou Yuhe, knew he didn't have long to live so he killed his ex, Ji Chen, and died too. His ex had plotted for him to be burned the first time and wanted to hurt MC again. Before MC's death his last thought was of ML, Xie Yifeng. MC woke up in the past before he met his ex... more>> and ML.

Revenge is not MC's goal, he just wants to avoid his ex and act. The romance between MC and ML is low key with minimal drama.

Spoiler

MC was in love with ML in his last life but felt he wasn't good enough for ML. ML had loved MC ever since high school. MC wasn't aware of ML's feelings until he was reborn.

They confirmed their relationship, set up a company, came out to the public, and starred in an award winning literary film together.

Note: Some of the descriptions are repetitious... although annoying, it doesn't spoil the feel of the novel too much. <<less
