Grand Voyage: Surviving on a Ghost Ship

Description

Yang Yi, along with everyone else, is thrust upon a Maritime Survival Game.

Some lucky individuals possess special ships; the Iron Heart is armed to the teeth, the Swift Wind is so fast it’s almost invisible, and the Ironhead charges forward with a massive ram.

Only the Nightmare, Yang Yi’s ghost ship, has strange and gory elements.

The protagonist’s journey won’t be smooth sailing — this is not a story for the weak-hearted.

i was hooked immediately and every chapter made me more excited. the fog and the abyssal creatures seem to be the greatest mysteries of the story. the idea of the ships are interesting, especially the 'special ships' which seem to say something about their captains. yang yi, for example, ... more>>

has a ghost ship that sends nightmares to its captain. some of those nightmares even seem to be warnings, some sort of prescience, of lethal dangers he will face. it's not all powerful, however, and has its downsides which relates to yang yi. the nightmare (name of his ship) will never catch normal fish so he's caught things like 'long-legged sardines' and freaking EYEBALL CREATURES. eating them is safe but loses him some points of sanity. i've rambled but one of yang yi's strengths is his strong will and thus greater resistance against insanity inflicting events. and considering all the cthulu and eldritch abominations dwelling in the deeps, biding their time until the system unleashes them upon unsuspecting captains... well. it's gonna be a fun time reading.

currently (as of chapter 16), our hero is still getting his feet under his legs and adjusting to the new world. filling his inventory, upgrading his ship, trying not to die... it's fun! <<less

This is a fun, fast-paced read! It's essentially a death game story set at sea instead of the usual series of instanced scenarios.

The premise is pretty simple, a large group of people are transported to their own boat on an endless sea and told to not get swallowed up by the fog chasing them. Every "player" has a unique but supposedly balanced start with different ship types, equipment, stats and talents. They can find resources via fishing, grappling hooking nearby resources, turning in monster parts to a gacha or trading.... more>> There's a chat system which brings more welcome human interactions, often entertaining ones, into the story. They pass through different themed sea biomes that offer different challenges they must overcome or die. The game elements are pleasantly present and not too intrusive.

Our protagonist has a spooky ghost ship which attracts strange things and occurances and starts with an infinite pistol that can be fired once a minute but frequently misfires. His abilities make him functionally immune to madness, and he is resistant to sanity draining effects and even gets buffed when his gets low. This synergizes well with his ghost ship and the various circumstances he encounters.

A different review seems to think this is one of those novels where the protagonist just is bullied by the writer and never gets ahead but as of chapter 34 I don't think this is the case. The MC definitely has cheats/abilities contrary to that review. Maybe not a unique extra bonus over every other player like a regression or a grandpa in a ring but the hand he's been dealt is strong. Details spoilered.
Spoiler

His ghost ship gives him premonitions of the future in his nightmares which is an advantage significant enough that he chooses to keep it when he has an opportunity to swap to a more conventional ship that has better base stats and more attacking potential. He is also able to pretty much ignore the sanity management element of the game which in interactions with other players in chat seems like a big deal. The gross fish he catches and consumes regularly early on deal significant sanity damage to others when he just links a picture in chat. Additionally his low sanity buff is strong, saving his bacon multiple times and it gets even stronger when he unlocks a talent later. His cursed gun is also doing a lot of work for him and it gets a large upgrade later. He also gains an ally in the definitely only slightly unstable witch waifu pretty quickly.

He does have a rough start but to me it was comedic and I'd say as of chapter 34 things are pretty stable for him. The initial difficulty is pretty typical to make his later victories feel more earned. If anything he's more OP than I'd prefer at currently. I do think I have a greater capacity for MC suffering relative to other people based on ratings/review of novels I read but I do think this story is not a very frustrating one.

The translation on iNoveltranslations by Ashka and Simply seems good. Everything's clear, dialogue isn't awkward, explanations are lucid and I don't notice any of the typical common lazy errors. <<less

Similar to Road Survival, I Have a Hint System! and Elevator Survival: Master of Every Floor except unlike those two novels where the protagonist has a cheat and becomes OP, in this story the MC doesn't have any unique advantages. Because of the brutality of these types of settings, not having a cheat basically means it's going to be torture p*rn, which is what this story turns into. The MC constantly being beat up, and barely yet miserably surviving day to day, not my type of story.

A very fun and fast paced novel. It greatly appeals in the way that the protagonist takes a very unusual route to the extreme, of which we mostly only see, which provides an amusing contrast from all the other normal "players". The main character is very level headed and does not kill for the sake of killing and in fact understands what he needs to do in his current situation despite the short ends he is constantly given, which forces him to adapt and increasingly become more used to adopting... more>> "insane" methods. It is one of the best in the genre that it is trying to fulfill and constantly brings out unique aspects of the world that always keeps the readers engaged. Despite the rough start the main character has, his integration of sparse and unusual forces/experiences is displayed as the story continues.

The world of the story constantly introduces new concepts and challenges with each "new" sea area in the beginning and there are a variety of forces separate from the main character that rival or are stronger than him in their own ways without feeling forced. The challenges in the world aren't just brushed by the main character either and he always has to suffer the often lasting consequences, good or bad, of being on the receiving end of them. Everything in the story often has a corresponding price to be paid, which makes everything have a better sense of weight to them as well. <<less
