National Geographic? ✔
Patriotic and racist? ✔
Random explanations that does not help the plot? ✔ If you are in to all that than its the right novel for you!
Only strong negative for me is the reiteration of the same idea lasting a whole/several chapter (author seems assume every readers are kids, that needs constant reminders, different ways to say the same thing, and kind of show that he is trying too hard to defend that he isn't racist but the characters are). Hope the author learns from other novels out there that are good at delivering sassy remarks that shows intelligence plus humor or just quit trying to justify himself and let his character's actions/interactions/internal dialogues form their own existence in the readers mind. Everyone has prejudice, it a form of self protection that keeps us alive longer.
The author introduced some kind of virus/ disease and it spoiled the novel it became very confusing
