Godfather Of Champions

This is a story about the pursuit of victory.

– “I subscribe only to the theory of victory. I only pursue victory. As long as I am able to obtain victory, I don’t care if it’s total football or counterattack. What is the ultimate goal of professional soccer? In my opinion, it is victory, and the pinnacle of victory is to become the champions. I am a manager. If I don’t wish to lose my job or be forgotten by the people, there’s only one path for me to take, and that is to lead the team in obtaining victories, in obtaining championship titles!”

The main character was not well-liked by people.

– “…We conducted a survey which had been deemed by Manager Tony Twain as extremely meaningless. In a random street survey conducted, ninety-three percent of those surveyed chose the option ‘I hate Tony Twain’, while only seven percent chose the option ‘This person is rather decent, I like him’. It is worth noting that nobody chose the option ‘Who is Tony Twain? I don’t know him’. Mark, do you know why Manager Twain felt that our survey was very meaningless?” Parker, a reporter from laughed loudly and said when he was being interviewed by BBC.

But there were also people who were madly in love with him.

– “…Became the spokesperson of world-wide famous clothing brands, shot advertisements, frequented the fashion industry’s award ceremonies, endorsed electronic games, has a supermodel girlfriend. His earnings from advertisements exceed his club salary by seventeen times, owns a special column in various print medias, publishing his autobiography (in progress), and is even said that he is planning to shoot an inspirational film based off his own person experiences! Who can tell me which part of his life experiences is worthy of being called ‘inspirational’? Hold on….Are you all thinking that I’m referring to David Beckham? You’re sorely mistaken! I’m talking about Manager Tony Twain….”

He was very knowledgeable about Chinese soccer.

– “…I’ve heard about it, that Bora gifted four books to his manager Mr. Zhu before your country’s national team’s warm up match. After which, the team lost 1:3 to a nameless American team from Major League Soccer. The new excuse that Mr. Zhu gave for losing the match, was that Bora gifted ‘books’ (‘books’ and ‘lose’ are homophones in the Chinese language). Here, I recommend that you guys find out what that one specific book is. Which book? Of course the one that caused you all to score a goal. After that, tell me the title of the book. Before every match, I will gift ten copies of that same book to you. In that case, won’t you all be able to get a triumphant 10:0 win over your opponents every time?” An excerpt taken from Tony Twain’s special column in a certain famous Chinese sports newspaper.

Agree with felix, less sh*t than expected. The author did his research on football, u can learn of football history from this. MC transmigrated into someone older than himself but dont worry, the newspaper still describe him as handsome xD. The MC knows when to back down unlike IRAS.i would have rated it 5 stars if not for the following 2 reasons:
minor spoiler
... more>>

1. The MC is a football fan and is transmigrated into a football manager. He has no prior experience as a football manager but he still leads his team to victory and is viewed as a good manager. And the author's reasoning for this ? Its because he played Football manager in his previous life lol.

2. Of all people the author decides to use the commentator for tr*sh talk. And the commentator does it on live television. Let me tell u something, no commentator in any sport is allowed to take a side or berate someone or make fun of someone. But here the commentator does it like there's no tomorrow.

Beside these 2 points, I think this is the only sport novel right now currently worth reading.

EDIT:Epic. Giving it 5 stars. This novel deserves better rating then it does now.i binged it in two weeks.

i got my answer to the question of why a person who never coached before in his life can be a successful coach. Its because he can control the morale of his team. And sometimes that is better than a team's players individual strength and skills. Till the end of novel he never involves himself in his teams training cause he doesn't know sh*t about it. He has two strengths, one is his ability to control his team morale and the other is he knows the future of the next 3, 4 years. He gets some star players who were unknown at the time. Dw not messi or roanldo cause they were already famous at the time. Now u would say that a team morale doesnt matter if the opposing team have figures like figo, zidane, beckham but look at Croatia right now. They have reached the 2018 world cup final. Its not that they have any big player but it is the fact that they have never won an international trophy that drive them forwad. They are united and so are tony's players. Nottingham forest is in the same situation. They may have won 2 ucl in the past but that is histroy. They are now not even in the premier league. Tony uses this fact to stimulate his team morale and he does it like a boss. He uses the media remarks and the opponents arrogance against them.

this novel has great character development aside for the MC. Its because he doesn't need any. He already has a strong character at the beginning of the novel. He has his own standards and in his team he is the king. Doesnt matter if u are the star player, if u go against his rules he will fire/transfer u. He isnt patriotic and dw he never takes over the Chinese national team (dont know if this is a sopiler). On the contrary he is against Chinese football.

the biggest plus for me is that it isnt a harem.
at the end of the end the best sports novel without a doubt for me. <<less

Less sh*t than expected. Actually handles countries outside of China with some sort of gravity and elegance/respect despite being a chinese webnovel (See I Really am a Superstar and other "modern world" chinese WN's), which is majorly helped along with it being set in England.

MC is flawed but somewhat likeable, and it's like a less honorable chinese version of "Giant Killing", the sports manga/anime.

So far, pretty good. Give it a try - I'll confirm that the MC's plans don't always work out, and that makes the story far more interesting.... more>> Sure it's inhuman speech/charisma levels and a bit of "time travel" cheating, but it's a lot less contrived than something like Perfect Superstar or IRAS.

So, this is based on the RAWs - have to say, it's pretty good, and devoid of the racism you'd expect. This is basically Giant Killing, but set in England... That takes place over like 12 years, with multiple years and arcs intertwining.

I mean that in the best of ways.

It's with like 6 volumes at the moment, and frankly has some of the most well developed characters and arcs I've seen in chinese WN's in a long, long time.

From someone, who has no interest in football, soccer, etc. This novel is really good and I wonder, why more people don't know about it. As a passerby, who doesn't even know the big stars (well, I heard about Beckham and maybe 1 or 2 more...), this novel is a real eye-opener into the football world.

I am seriously regretting that I don't have a favorite team to support and root for because this novel makes me want to become a fan and throw my money into the games.

Besides that, I... more>> never seriously considered the importance of managers/coaches in football teams and I find that the MC goes through an interesting process in his own managing career. He doesn't have a cheat of a system or similar nonsense and, aside from traveling back in time a few years and knowing some things about the future, MC relies on his own ability to predict the matches, create the strategy, manage the locker room atmosphere, etc.

Although I really like system novels (such as God of Tennis), this one is just too good to pass up if you enjoy reading about the MC's road to success!

Finally, this novel isn't typical Chinese racism one - like some of the reviewers mentioned, the MC doesn't care about China's football team. The mentionings of China are reasonable and interesting when they do crop up, however, the main action happens in UK and Europe. There's none of the discrimination present and I just can't stop reading!

Ahhh, whenever I go do something else, I keep wondering: "What's next?" and then I return to reading this novel. Anyway, my review is concluded and I am off to continue since I haven't finished it yet! ;D <<less

I don't like doing early reviews. For example, right now there's still a little under 1000 chapters I havn't read. Maybe the novel changes later on. But there aren't much more chapters available, and I think the reviews give a skewed view on this piece of... work. I guess. Top of the line sports novel my ass. If you want football, go read Giant Killers, that manga is a lot better than this.

This is far from being as good as other reviewers say, in my opinion. It doesn't feel the... more>> slightest bit realistic at all.

The transmigration has a funny start, but its execution is hilariously bad. He doesn't seem to have to adapt much despite the large change. Other people always seem to like him, approve of him. He achieves his early goals easily, without much effort. He seems like a god, achieves results like a godly trainer, but doesn't have any knowledge or experience to back it up. Unbelievable, in the bad sense. The portrayal of women is just as bad. Every character interaction feels unrealistic. And...

Another thing that stood out to me: the author isn't able to write well about football. He talks about useless possession, which is a by now outdated, debunked theory. It might've even been debunked already at the time of writing. What Tony Twain does and say to coach his team, it's all utter drivel.

I still somewhat enjoy it, but that doesn't mean that it's any good. 2/5. And that's being generous: if this was a paper book... This quality wouldn't even get looked at by any publishing company. Non-NU score would be like 0.5 or 1 out of 5. Luckily for this novel, NU has a lot worse still. <<less

Early impression is that this is a top-of-the-line sports novel. The MC is the coach and already has a very strong character, basically imagine Tony Stark if he was born poor and had a passion for soccer.

The author clearly has a passion for the sport as well, with impeccable research in real world players and teams, as well as certainly being a big fan of Football Manager. I lack the knowledge necessary to fully appreciate this, but those with knowledge of early '00s English football would no doubt be delighted,... more>> especially if they're fans of the real life Nottingham Forest.

One thing I've never seen done before, the MC transmigrated into someone older than himself (26 into a 34-year-old body), which is typical of the general boldness of the novel. Given how high the rating is for the original novel (9.3), I have high hopes for this. <<less

Btw my rating is 4 stars (I did this review on my phone and I can't be bothered to figure out how to change the rating after it's been set)

(Read the translation up to c888 then continued with the MTL)

Overall I Enjoyed it, . It starts off a bit rough but gets better later although the translation is pretty sh*t throughout (characters names seem to constantly change and it can get really confusing sometimes).

The pacing is fine for the most part and there are some times skips... more>> that work well but there was one that seemed like it skipped some important stuff that maybe would have been better and more meaningful to the story to have not been skipped.

I think that while this novel can be enjoyed by just about anyone I feel like you may get more enjoyment out of it if you have some understanding of Football though I would hardly say it's a requirement. <<less

I am writing this review immediately after binge reading the entire novel without stop.

This novel is definitely, without a doubt one of the best Sports Webnovel I have ever read and probably will ever read. Why do I Love it?

  1. A very well written and melancholic ending of the novel, very satisfying as well as somewhat sad and heartbreaking (not in a bad way I assure you).
  2. Generally, most of the novels which I read from novel updates are not able to incite or inspire any feelings to me. I just read CN or Jap LNs as I simply enjoy them. However, this novel is a bit different. While reading it, I felt genuine joy, sadness and melancholy. Something which is unique for a webnovel.
  3. The story is very unique within the transmigration genre. I will not spoil the uniqueness but trust me when I say that there is simply no other parallel on novel updates for transmigration+timetravel genre. This novel is unique.
  4. The story is epic spanning over 15 years of a football manager's life with professional and personal ups and down. The experiences depicted are very genuine and realistic (for any one who is a fan of football or as americans call it soccer will understand).
  5. There is no 'system' or no 'missions' or no XP. The MC builds his reputation step by step (albeit with some fragmented knowledge of future). The MC is not depicted as all mighty cool guy type. This is most genuine MC depiction that I have read in a webnovel even beating some more well written works on the novelupdates. The characters including MC are relatable and dynamic.

While I really love the LN and I would place this one amongst top 10 best webnovels I have ever read, I am not blind to its shortcomings which I will highlight below:

  1. May be I am wrong but I feel that only people who have follow sport of football will truly enjoy this novel and love it. But may be I am wrong.
  2. Writing, while succinct certainly feels bare and dry at times (but only sometimes).

This is pretty good.

the author knows his stuff and his writing on football history and players are accurate. the only disappointing thing is that there's no romance and the MC eventually forgets about his past despite the author trying to reconnect him to his previous self but it just disappeared.

there are times when the author tries to write the MC into a "person" who has a life outside football but somehow it just ends abruptly and disappointingly... it feels like the author doesn't know how to write anything outside of... more>> football.

that said, alot of games are skipped and only the important ones are written in detail but it's still a good read.

it's basically a "lesser" giant killing. <<less

One word. EPIC.

Aside The King's Avatar, Godfather Of Champions definitely top three novel I've completed so far.

I don't care even if you are not a football fan, you'd be immerse in the character, plot, environment and emotion in this novel.

Downside is, some of its chapter are mess up. You can read the correct one in W*bnov*l. Just those chapter though, elsewhere I red it in other sites.

I highly recommended this one if you're bored with typical chinese novel.

Just one word "LEGENDARY". I have nothing to criticize. It was just that good. The story take you in an amazing journey, making you go trough a wide range of emotions : happiness, frustration, sadness, gratefulness... and more importantly, make you think about life, what we are living for, what we are fighting for, about love, friendship, sacrifices, principles, choices, etc... The character development was top-notch down to the background characters. It's not just a story about a sport manager, it's a story about life. I'm sincerely thankful for the... more>> author for bringing such an amazing story to life. Normally, I never read sport themed stories but I'm glad I did this time, really really glad. <<less

Update: dropped after reading a few more chapters, too much tr*sh talk by commentators and analysist.

Rating 5 stars.

... more>> Request: Please, don't review this novel if you haven't read up to the third season in novel.

Asa football fan, I wasn't optimistic about the novel. Specially, after reading the description on novelupdates.

Infact, I didn't read more then one paragraph of the description. I didn't even check the novel's 3.9 rating and only read one comment.

I just wanted to read a football novel and gave it a try. 754 chapters later, I am so happy with my decision.

There are so many things I like, but the integration of imagination of author and realism of the world in the story is what captivated me.

Except one blunder related to the champion cup qualifiers early in the third season, which the author later apologized for, throughout the story I felt as if I was living in a different world.

The players, the matches, the press conferences, the romance, the journey, the heartbreaking tragedies, the struggles of various characters and entities, the pressure on managers, the bad unspoken side of football, the relationships of our protagonist manager with his players, his mistakes, his highs and lows, his health, his friends.... etc etc..

There are so many things that made me get absorbed in this world, that the past four days I have slept half the time I normally do.

I even dreamt about being a fan or player on the hero's team going through the journey of the team's progress.

I will just say this to everyone, except the occasional bad translation and the one blunder, just read it till the end of first champions cup in his third season.

I believe you guys will love this world as much as I do. If you don't adjust to this world even by then, then sadly the novel wasn't cut out for you. <<less

Very good novel. I really enjoyed it. It is all about football and some more football. Really as a football fan myself I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing journey.

The only complain I have for this novel is translator sometime translating football into soccer which is heinous considering we are literally reading a novel about a guy managing a team of english premier league

Edit:- I take it back I rate the story 1. MC is f*cking loli con. F*ck he married 13 years old brazilian girl later 20 while MC is 40+... more>> years old. Holysh*t mate I am stumped. <<less

It was enjoyable until chapter 413 where the MC was distracted before an important match because of a 15 yo girl rejecting his calls.. Sorry I'm not here to debate about how it's only humane for people not focusing on their job when they met trouble in their daily life. I just think the MC is creepy because the other party is still an underage kid. Other than that it was actually pretty enjoyable, and I will probably pick it up again in a few days albeit I'll just skip... more>> that particular segment because of how disturbing it was for me. <<less
