Gluttonous Crown Princess

Tao Ti, a little taotie* cub, transmigrated and became the bride of the sickly crown prince who was meant to chase out his ill fortune, but ended up committing su*cide by ingesting poison.

Met by the disgusted gazes of everyone in the Eastern Palace, Tao Ti was a little flustered.

Just then, the crown prince who was rumoured to soon die from illness comforted her, “Don’t be scared, I’ll give you a letter of annulment before I die, and return you your freedom.”

Tao Ti was stunned, “A-alright.”

Inwardly, she thought, “A gentle and beautiful man; I’m fine with this!!!”

Later——

When the crown prince was ridiculed, Tao Ti rolled up her sleeves to defend him.

When the crown prince was sick with a high fever, Tao Ti boiled the medicine herself.

When the crown prince’s appetite was poor, Tao Ti cooked, fried, steamed, and baked.

Everyone in the Eastern Palace: Safeguard the best crown princess in the world!

~

The prince of the outlying tribe was muscular and bold; he planned to abduct Taoti to the grasslands once the crown prince died.

The crown prince broke the prince’s leg, then, in the middle of the night, blocked Tao Ti.

Tao Ti’s voice trembled, “Your… Your Highness?”

The crown prince’s eyes were dark, and his smile was warm. “If I had known that you liked wild ones, I would’ve stopped pretending.”

*T/N: Taotie are ancient Chinese mythological creatures with an insatiable appetite, commonly emblazoned on bronze vessels. It’s now used as a term to describe gluttonous people. Written as 饕餮, it’s pronounced ‘Tao Ti’ in Chinese, which happens to be a homonym of the FL’s name, 陶缇 (Tao Ti).

Yandere faux gentle prince X gluttonous pure mythial beast. Follows the similar formula of ancient times foodie novels but with a decent plot to back it up.

MC is the usual amazing, gentle cook who wins over everyone with food but is pretty smart except when it comes to ML lol. She's a bit brash but it's not a serious conspiracy novel so not too bad. I like that her cooking skills are actually reasonable considering she's a 100 year plus demon from a clan of gluttons.

ML is outwardly kind but... more>> secretly scheming and yandere type. MC fell in love with his fake turned real gentleness and he basically falls in love with her sincerity.

Romance has a misunderstanding element which drags for a while (even when they get together) but is intermittently resolved just as it gets frustrating. It's pretty sweet but would be a drastically different story if MC basically didn't reciprocate (like the emperor and the first empress). Cute as it is though.

Side characters are fun and featured in the epilogues. The side romances were interesting enough, especially Xu Wanchen's I think.

All in all, easy reading and enjoyable. <<less

I think I really should address the matter about foodie MC = dense MC in every CN I've read. It was cute at first but soon I'm annoyed about this type of MC. Not that this novel is bad, it's just annoying.

Spoiler

Her denseness was to the point that she doesn't count ML in the list of people she'd give gifts for. She was attentive enough to buy things for people who only came to visit her for mooching off food but she never spared a thought about what gift ML would like. And has anyone noticed that every single meals she made was never a medicinal meal? There's a lot of food she made to cater to her friend, the ML's little siblings, and even to the palace attendant and the guards, but she has never made any tasty medicinal food for ML, at least to make his health better. It's always made to her cravings at the time but she never thought about improving ML's health condition. There's also this blessing she received in a temple but when asked by the monk about what she wanted to ask, she immediately thought about her future business after ML's supposed death (and she happily discussed about it with ML, too).

It might seem like a small thing, but to me it means that he's never been in her heart or future plan, now or ever. Hell, maybe he's already a dead person to her, since she never asked about what ML's ailment was, even after their relationship was good enough to just sleep together everyday. Can you believe that she, someone who generously shared 100 zitui buns during the Qingming festival, wouldn't care enough to make healthy and tasty Chinese medicinal meal for ML? Poor him.

[collapse]

And echoing Freyalily's review about the distrust and misunderstanding...
Spoiler

Actually it got worse around chapter 100, with MC headlessly rushing forward to openly create a big misunderstanding involving two kingdoms without taking the initiative to tell ML and without concern to her crown princess identity and how it looked to outsiders. She was smart enough to evade palace scheming but she s*upidly and happily talked to a foreign prince (who is actually her friend Qiong Qi) so openly in a pavilion under everyone's eyes. If she doesn't care about her crown princess status, she should at least care about how it'd look like to ML, since they've confessed to each other.

ML even gave her a few chances to take the initiative to tell him the truth but she still insisted on hiding things and even had the audacity to feel wronged about it. I feel like ML would unconditionally trust her, no matter how absurd it was even if she told ML that she's a mythical beast. While her mouth was sweet enough to tell ML that she liked him, but her actions say that she doesn't care about ML that much. I'm tired of this MC. That 'caring protagonist' tag up there was misleading, since someone who truly cared about their other half wouldn't behave like that

[collapse]

I think the author really shouldn't pair this type of MC to a crown prince. This type of MC has no sense of duty, responsibility, or wisdom required to be a partner of someone in high position and just wants to eat, sleep and play.

Dropped. <<less

Was a sweet fluffy story with a dash of drama.
My only complaint is that there is no payout to the supernatural elements. The main character is a divine beast (Taoti: Something like a mystical leopard/dog with a bottomless stomach that is depicted on ancient cookware), but dont expect that plotline to payout in any meangful way

Spoiler

She also has a supernatural friend who is something like a mermaid

[collapse]

That plot point gets the most attention of all the supernatural ones, but canonically happens over a period of only 10 days

Spoiler

she never confesses that she is a supernatural creature inhabiting a dead woman to her husband and it never becomes a problem. She does confess she is not the original, but the ML seems to assume she is a spy and decides he doesnt care and wont question it. At one point a villian points out that she might be a ghost and that they should get some toaist monks for an exorcism, but it seems like even the author forgets they set that up as a possibility. There are also some loose threads that remain loose by the end:

1) the FLs 13th uncle was an imortal divine beast who lived in ancient China, and is repeatedly brought up but never appears. I was expecting to meet either a younger 13th uncle and have some triangle drama, the 13th uncle to be the MLs secret supernaturally good shadow guard who never shows up, or the 13th uncle to end up being the FL & MLs future child. We never see his face.

2) the 13th uncle sends the FL a mysterious magic (?) gift through her mermaid friend across time & the gates of hell. It is a strange bell that never gets mentioned again. It felt like it was set up to play an important role that fizzled out

[collapse]

The rest of the novel is food based

I'd gladly be ML and FL's child in my next life, please!

Well, I can say that this novel was very well-written and I liked most of the characters since they actually had their own thoughts and their own lives. The romance between the main leads was adorable and heartwarming. Although it was ridden with some silly misunderstandings, I can say that it was pretty smooth sailing. Speaking about a rough road of romance, that would definitely be the couple of Xu Wanchen and Xie Yunshu lol (re: final side stories).

ML... more>> was a powerful and cunning crown prince who disguises himself as a gentle, weak, and frail prince who will die by age 23. Because of this, even though he is the most handsome and perfect man in the country and has the emperor's favor, no one was willing to marry their daughter to him. Since ML (Pei Yan) had an arranged marriage since birth with the owner of FL's body, he got married to FL and planned to treat her perfunctorily. Though of course, we know that his heart will definitely change his plans.
Spoiler

He initially planned to use FL as just a chess piece but he later guessed that FL wasn't the real Tao Ti since FL would care for him with such pure eyes. After getting along with such an admirable FL, his heart moved for her and he started to be possessive towards FL. He endured forbearance and waited for FL to willingly jump into his arms so he stopped himself from being too impulsive and scaring her. After having great patience and resolving their misunderstandings, he was finally able to hold the beauty in his arms and loved her to the high heavens. Even after going back after their mortal life to be the

last phoenix in the whole world

[collapse]

FL (Tao Ti) was a gluttonous cub who ate poisoned mushrooms one day and had her soul travel to another world and enter the body of Tao Ti, the newly married crown princess who took poison upon arriving at the door of the East Palace. Upon waking up, she was subjected to the disdain and anger of the servants of the East Palace. ML is still nice to her despite what happened and promised to let her go after his death, so she became very fond of ML (though she was tempted by ML at first sight since she thought he was too handsome lol). As a Tao Tie, she loves eating good food so she also knew how to make really, really good food. As the crown princess and wife of ML, she was very kind and gentle towards the servants regardless of status, and since she made delicious food and boosted ML's appetite, the staff at the palace treated her kindly and became fond of her. Despite being a bit dumb and naive in front of ML, she's actually very smart and insightful, and also knows how to avoid falling into the palace's schemes and tricks. She was very hesitant to like ML since he is human and she is an immortal creature but upon learning that ML loves her too, she decided to just go on with the relationship. They ended up having dragon and phoenix twin babies who were very similar to both of them.

[collapse]

I like how most of the people in the palace aren't evil and ambitious. It made me think that it might be possible to have such warmth inside the imperial palace (though I still disdain the idea of having a harem, it's too difficult for one person to love so many peacefully). I also like how FL's friends got their own happy endings and found their own husbands who would also love only them for life. I also really like how it wasn't too dark and suffocating to read despite being in the ancient times setting.

Definitely a good read, 10/10~ <<less

Pretty early in, and it's enjoyable! I'm a sucker for "transmigrated FL that treats the sickly ML well via cooking" shenanigans, and this story fits the bill.

While it's early in the translations, they're really good. Superb flow, minimal spelling/grammar mistakes, and great use of vocabulary. I'm thoroughly impressed, and also appreciated the translator's footnotes. Keep up the amazing work!

The MTL is fairly readable, but after getting into 20 chapters I'm happy to just wait for translations and enjoy the story with readable details.

Fun tropes you'll encounter:

  • og FL died by su*cide going into her arranged marriage with the crown prince (ML). FL transmigrates into her body and does a 180, becoming a more elegant and composed lady.
    • Ofc her su*cide was instigated by the cunning third prince who seduced her :')
  • Palace drama: the empress is not the crown prince's mom (who died beforehand) so she's kinda sus, crown prince is pitied throughout the palace but he has his spies going everywhere, and the FL is supposed to be a 'tool' for crown prince's scheming (... for now...)
  • Food fun: ofc the FL asks for her own private kitchen and wows people with her phenomenal cooking skills. We love a good foodie supporting character.
  • FL is a sucker for the ML's gorgeous face
Can't wait to read more!

YOOOO I absolutely loved the background story that was going on that blew up in everyone's faces at the end.

Major spoilers, it's my favorite thing about this book.

Spoiler

Ok, lemme preface this by saying I absolutely despise yanderes. I'm viscerally disgusted by the idea of people restricting and controlling the freedom of other people. It infuriates me.

The brilliant and best part of this otherwise meh story is that it's low-key about the repercussions of a yandere.

Like, it's subtly hinted and referenced mysteriously as the story's backdrop until what happened is fully revealed and explodes in everyone's faces.

I feel like I need another spoiler warning here before I straight up say it.

Spoiler

The yandere here is the emperor. He's the ML's father. The victim is the first empress. She's the ML's mother.

The emperor is psychotic. A true blue yandere who confined the empress and everything. She didn't love him and treated him coldly. But he didn't care about her feelings at all. There are a few hints that the empress sometimes softened toward him that absolutely reads like Stockholm syndrome. (i.e. like a few other yandere stories I've unfortunately come across.) It's great.

The ML is the second prince. Guess who the first prince was? The child the empress had with someone else before she was forced into the palace...

Spoiler

Or so the emperor thought! And so, he had no love for the first prince. But in reality, when the empress was engaged to be married to her sweetheart, the bastard emperor drunkenly snuck into her boudoir and r*ped her. She ran away to elope with the sweetheart, but she got pregnant that night!! Then the emperor tracked her down and threatened the lover and her family's life unless she became his wife. So actually the first prince was her and emperor's blood child. Yo, this mutherf*cker is dumb af. This is why yanderes are intolerable. Lmao.

[collapse]

And where is that first prince now? Yo, he's been dead before the 2nd prince was even born.

When the empress was told the emperor had her son killed, it was the final straw. Of course she never had any faith in the emperor. After years of depression, she killed herself to escape the emperor. And that. Left a lot of landmines behind. Whew.

I ABSOLUTELY love this storyline. It's vindictive and satisfying to see a yandere get his comeuppance.

[collapse]

The ML shows hint of inheriting some of that mania, but he's fortunate enough that MC reciprocates his love. So he never falls over the edge. Thankfully.

[collapse]

Otherwise the story's a typical transmigrated foodie winning over the hearts of everyone through their stomachs with cooking. If you like reading food descriptions etc. this is for you.

It's competently written, even if I'm not a fan of the overly naive MC. She's cheerful enough I'll tolerate it with minimal skipping.

The ML is attractive and his constant self restraint when he's h**ny for MC is hilarious and kind of hot. He's a white lotus so I really felt bad for him since he has to pretend not to act like the wolf he is all the time. 😂

Spoiler

I'm glad when both sides finally come a little clean about who they really are.

[collapse]

TL;DR An average, decent Transmigration novel with that one thing that makes it fascinating enough to keep reading. <<less

MC is typical dense innocent transmigrator who loves to eat and cook, adapting to the new age, conquering everyone around her with her cooking.

ML is fixed from the beginning. He is also the typical possessive character who hides so deeply. Outside he is sickly gentle caring, and above all, godly gorgeous, making MC fall in love with him. While actually he is cruel, mad, doing bad things in the fight to the throne.

It's more of a slice of life with cooking for the most part, and romance as the other... more>> main theme.

It is not that bad, really. I'm not interested in the food so I simply skip it. Some of cooking novel tend to make MC too OP (as in no one else in the country able to make good food), while in here, she simply likes eating (it's her nature) and not monopolized the ability to make good food.

Other than cooking (and eating and being a beauty), MC has no other talent. She is really naive innocent, but it is also her advantage (yes, it's the kind of novel where no matter how s*upid someone acts, the plot or the pampering love interest will come to her aid).

Romance is rather slow burn, but there isn't much "misunderstanding", so it's not frustrating to read.

Until around chapter 101 where I (finally) read the one in the description, and dropped this.

Spoiler

MC died after eating mushroom gifted by her female friend. This female friend feel guilty and somehow managed to transmigrate to MC's world, alas, as burly male noble from another country.

Knowing each other identity, MC design rendezvous with this friend, while completely aware of her status as crown princess, showing her happiness after meeting her him, feeling distraught when she he got hurt, even sneak out to meet her him privately in the night while lying to her husband. This friend warn her that ML is not what he appear to be, offering to marry her away to another country. But MC refused.

The husband definitely find out, and out of jealousy confront her (basically the one in the description), and MC feel wronged because she is not cheating, while she feel duped by her husband who actually not a gentle person she fall in love with (she completely believe this one word of her friend).

As a resolve, MC cries, ML soften, MC lied to get out of the situation, but then tried to tell the truth, ML stopped her not want to know her situation because.. hmm.. "as long as you are you, I don't care about anything else".. And.. Happy Ending....

This feel underwhelming. ML disguise supposedly completely broken after this event. ML doesn't have to have a possessive setting to be jealous and act on it, considering how MC acts. Everyone have different borderline and acts differently in different situation, anyway. I think it's also better for MC to be completely dense, instead of knowing what she shouldn't do, but do it anyway, then feel wronged when she is caught. But ML accept it anyway because.. plot.

The story paced was good, makes me want to know what happen the next chap the whole time.

About 40% of the story is about food, 30% their love story, 30% others (such as power struggle, fight with the villain etc).

What I dont like is,

... more>> They both like to keep secrets alot from each other and always results to misunderstanding. They dont sit down and talk.

Although they start to like each other early, its still 'like' phase, they only start to love about 70 chap +.

The ML is a yandare, I think he's a bit not right in the head lol, but he really spoiled MC to the max. <<less

The other reviews have stated a lot of the books main points, plots and the MC and ML, so I won't be getting into that. I'm just here to talk about the MTL and the way the story ended.

MTL-ing this book isn't hard, in fact you will be able to understand whatever you read while MTL-ing cause it's quite easy to read. The only thing that will throw you off are the pronouns, which is honestly common. So if you get impatient and you wanna MTL this, just go ahead... more>> and do so, you won't have much trouble understanding it.

Story is overall fluffy, with the angst coming from the settling of the ML back story. The ending of the book is honestly a little underwhelming, I was expecting some extras or mini stories but it just ends like that. It's a small peeve, but it doesn't really matter. Overall, I enjoyed the story a lot. <<less

A fun read.

FL transmigrates into oriFL's body after oriFL's commits su*cide on her wedding day to the sickly weak Crown Prince who is the ML. FL is a cheerful lady who then strives to live well in ancient times while trying to find a way back to her world. She's a taotie, a mythical beast and she knows she might've been wrongfully transferred to this world so she's just waiting for her family to figure it out and get her back. So she's not as upset to be in this... more>> ancient times. She seems to be from a modern world which has mythical beasts of all sorts. Her uncle who lived in ancient times always raved about the food in that period, so our FL who is a natural foodie (taotie's are known to be gluttons who swallow enemies/world), is busy cooking her way into the ML's heart. Her natural cheerful demeanor and straightforward personality also worms its way into the ML's heart.

There aren't much faceslapping involved mostly because FL is not the type of person who holds grudges but there are some people who often want to make the FL miserable. The ML helps solves the issues quite naturally. To be honest I felt like the political intrigue was rather boring.

ML is pretending to be sick and weak but he's actually taking a medication to make himself that way to survive in the royal family since the Empress wants him dead and also wants to make her son the Emperor. ML is actually a possessive man and can be quite yandere if the story really went that way. Fortunately for him, Tao Tie loves him and indulges him and thus, he does not give in to his darker instincts.

ML solves problems easily which is why I felt the boredom from the political intrigue. This novel only makes me hungry due to all the food descriptions lol.

It's a slow-build romance with ML making a trap for FL with his beauty and also demeanor. But gradually he does reveal his true self to her and she loves him anyway.

Things to note:

The Emperor -

Spoiler

ML's mother commiting su*cide because she mistakenly thought the Emperor ordered her first child to be killed due to jealousy. Emperor had r*ped ML's mother and she ran away and Emperor thought the 1st child was of another man. Turns out it was his all along. From the description of Tao Tie's mother who is ML's mum best friend, ML's mum seems to be a cold beauty who needs to be coaxed and eats soft food but not hard food (which means she doesn't like to be bound, hates people to control her) and the actions of the Emperor made her pissed. Emperor was too arrogant and didn't know how to coax her to forgive him and his jealous harem members made it worst by spouting lies so ML's mum believed them and kills herself in sorrow. In fact, if ML's mum and Emperor had talked things through, if Emperor had been less of an arrogant a**hole, things might've worked out between them. I like how its a contract to ML and FL's relationship which is more open even if its also slightly dishonest with some of the truths that ML hides.

[collapse]

Xu Wenchan and Xie Yunshi -

Spoiler

Disliked this subplot of her running away after sleeping with the man and getting pregnant but coming back just for the son's future studies and then running away again. It just isn't for me.

[collapse]

Return Arc -

Spoiler

Surprised that ML is also in FL's original world as a goddamn phoenix lmao. Interesting and would've liked more.

[collapse]

End notes:

Basically a fluff story with minimal drama. <<less

I really liked this!

Like hastingsj, I just wish the author had done more about the mythical beast part of the characters.

Overall, I disagree with darkelf01 because I don't think that the MC was dense to the point of being annoying, the misunderstandings were reasonable and not that frustrating, and the MC did her duties well. I read over some of their reasoning and it seems that it was probably an MTL issue, because I read it in Chinese and a lot of the stuff was explained.

It's only a 4 star... more>> because it's good, but not the masterpiece it could have been with the kind of potential that the setup and premise made me think it was. <<less

Eng - chap 18 and I MLT'ed the rest.

3 stars is quite low BUT honestly it was more for me being nitpicky, because over all it's a good story. Not a lot of angst, some face slapping, some fluff and over all it quite a feel good read, with the added bonus of no golden finger or Mary Sue like characteristics.

The MLT was one of the better ones I've read, as other reviewers have said, as long as you don't mind pronoun mix up and some random or extra... more>> words it's not a difficult read.

The romance is slow, or at least the MCs side of things is slow for me personally. But the relationship between MC and ML is sweet

Spoiler

Ok my issues are starting here and some are spoilers - I think.

1- the whole thing when MCs BFF crosses over into the body of the enemy prince, was not for me, yes it added drama in the right place just as the MC and ML were settling more securely into their relationship but I found it kinda cringy and frustrating to read - more with MCs actions than anything. Like dude obviously the tent was a set up.
2- the bonus stories, where do I even start. I loved, loved the Modern Day MC and ML, and I wish we got more of that especially of what their children who be but it cut off be we got that answer. So that was dissatisfying in a way for me.
But it was the Xu Wenchan and Xie Yunshi that really dissapointed me and honestly I gave up halfway through. It was nothing like I was expecting and made me feel really dissapointed in Xu Wenchen's character development, again this was a personal preference, other might really love the direction it took, but something liked in it for me and I found her to be cowardly. I'm all for female empowerment- I don't need a man to be happy or succeed in life but her actions and choices - I just couldn't wrap my head around when considering main story Achen.
[collapse]

But over all it put in the time when I was in bed ill and I did enjoy it. It's worth the read and you will enjoy it just don't read if hungry, the mass of food descriptions will send you craving. <<less

I was hooked by the second part of the blurb but so far, I had only seen Tao To making food that made the Crown Prince's appetite improve. Despite the fact that I still feel so impatient for that moment to come, I can't say that I was not satisfied with the sweetness between the people that Tao Ti was sprouting friendship with.

Crown Prince is a Yandere but I still haven't seen him go cross my bottom line so I still feel positive towards... more>> him. I know it was just a facade of him but man, I feel so thrilled seeing him treat the protagonist with gentleness and patience. We could see him think the worst of the FL but well, I'm trying to ignore that (not that it was hard lol 😭.)

Spoiler

When the crown prince was ridiculed, Tao Ti rolled up her sleeves to defend him.

When the crown prince was sick with a high fever, Tao Ti boiled the medicine herself.

When the crown prince's appetite was poor, Tao Ti cooked, fried, steamed, and baked.
