The best thing about this story is the relationship between MC-ML.

I'm not that excited about the games because the system backstory and the games itself is nothing new or deep. The reason why I like it is because I can read them and still sleep well at night.

MC-ML is just meant to be. No matter what and how, they're drawn to each other and nothing can keep them apart. They're both really strong, so the games feel like they're not dangerous at all.

Spoilers on the system and MC-ML encounter:

Spoiler

SYSTEM: is a rogue AI with god complex, trying to kill humanity especially its maker.

It's so clear this system cannot function 100% without human managers, but it keeps insisting it can, and one of the ways it can break away from the shadow of being manmade is to kill and raise above humans. Ultimately it loses because it can't break its own rules.

------------------------------------

ARCS:

I like the first arc for sure, I like the teammates they meet along the journey too. It's fun because some of them are unintended bugs in the system.

Game settings and meeting the right teammates feels a bit orchestrated. What are the odds they get into the same exam MC-ML had been before and meet the perfect teammates in under 7 exams, in a worldwide system?

bc the MC-ML are so OP, the game's stakes are ::nonexistent::. It's not unpredictable on NPC actions (we know they just want to eliminate players) and not dangerous on system motive (we know it just wants to kill humans). It's also not scary when MC-ML encounter setbacks (we know they're the strongest in the exam and even when they fail they win). The games aren't very exciting for me too. They're not that different from most escape/survival genre, they rely heavily on visual sense but this is a novel so we can't see what the characters see. What's nice about them is karmic retributions for bad people and good people helping each other out.

Foreigners are in the book without it being xenophobic. It's even respectful when it included European sea-merchant pride. There's even black people and south asian kid, not just one dimensional white people / tr*sh talking brute. It's believable on this part as the system used to be military training system, so it's natural to want soldiers to have basic understanding about other countries and make them neutral to other country.

As we all know, university exams are not the same in all countries. But the exam not being about the knowledge but the practice, I guess, makes the exam not strictly culturally chinese. I imagine the invigilators and the main culture being chinese is because the system base is in cn and its knowledge bank was also developed by chinese people. It's just connected to other countries for knowledge exchange.

------------------------------------

MC-ML:

it's hinted early on that MC and ML had met before. ML asked if they've met, he forgot his past, and his uncle said: 'he's still just as good'.

They've dated twice before the story starts, once as invigilator x examinee, then invigilator x invigilator, now finally as examinee x invigilator. It cements how much they love each other and feels like they've gone through three lifetimes of love, even if I don't usually like repeated amnesia. It's fine because they're both not dramatic or whiny.

They feel like two halfs of one whole. After they get together and MC finally feel comfortable enough to bare his soft side to ML, I'm so relieved and happy he finally found a harbor to rely on. Not because he's weak, but because he's been through so much and he deserves to be loved.

One thing. MUST READ.

The first I saw this, I actually hesitated to read this since it's description sounds serious and ominous.

The second time I saw it, I decided to put it in my reading list.

... more>> The third time, I decided to read it. And that was one of the correct decision that I did.

While reading the story, you might feel bored, monotonous, and impatient, but when the time you ended reading the story... you'll feel reluctant to end it. Like you'll suddenly miss it. I felt many emotions, I felt like I was in it.

One thing was clear to me, this story was very good. 5/5 ratings.

The development of the story was good, as it unraveled the past that was locked.

Characters, I love many of them, even shipped some of them.

Settings was good too, it was slowly being broadened as the plot continues.

Overall, love it very much. A must read for people finding unlimited flow, romance, action, psychological.

So, don't hesitate! Read it now!

PS. Unfortunately there are no special chapters. It's a pity for me cause I want to see if some of my ships sailed safely. <<less

I never picked up this novel despite it being really well known in the Chinese community, but I gave it a try when I heard the author was Musuli, and I wasn't disappointed. There might be some parts that are confusing, but the novel itself is really good. Please give it a go if you have time.

The world is a brilliant and grand place.

Personally I really liked this novel! I want to first give a shout-out to the translator because this is SUPER well translated, I had basically no difficulty understanding what was going on, which is really appreciated. Other than that, the story itself is quite engaging and I’m enjoying reading it o far.

As a quick summary, our MC You Huo has been plunged into this mysterious (and deadly) exam system and has to solve the mysteries presented in each scenario to gain points and live. Along the way, he meets the... more>> “invigilators” who technically watch over the examinees, ensure they don’t break rules, and dole out punishments if they do. In particular, one invigilator, our ML Qin Jiu, gets on the MC’s nerves, and eventually they take on the exam together.

The MC and ML both are very fearless and a little emotionless (with the ML being a bit more playful than our MC). On one hand, it doesn’t seem like there’s much character development as yes, the 2 are pretty OP. However, they’re still very interesting characters in their own right, and the slow reveal of their backstory and shared history is fascinating to watch unfold. Personally, I’m not the type to mind OP characters, so this isn’t an issue for me, but if you’re looking for a rags to riches story, weak to strong, this isn’t it.

I also loved the storylines and set-ups for the exams. I wouldn’t categorize this as horror (if you’ve read TGCF or MDZS, I personally think they’re much more bloody), but there are definitely some more suspenseful scenes that are well portrayed. There’s never a true sense of danger because the leads are so powerful, but the intrigue buildup for the characters’ backstories and figuring out the ins and outs of the exam setting is interesting. I do wish there was a bit more struggle in solving the exam though. I don’t think the MC’s success is based on luck, he’s smart enough to figure the questions out and strong (given his military background), but I wouldn’t say they’re mind boggling answers. I like the characterization of the side characters as well!

Finally, I’ve read a couple “system and exam” based novels, and this one is unique in that the MC and ML outright and consistently break the system’s rules. Usually, the characters stay within the system’s guidelines, so the concept definitely stands out.

The last note I have is that the romance build up is pretty slow. The ML and MC still haven’t gotten together after 70 chapters, but at least we can easily feel the tension between them. I’m anticipating their relationship growth!

Overall, I certainly recommend this novel and hope you will enjoy it! <<less

I never thought I would be a fan of horror/thriller/mystery stories but heck, after this novel, my views of the world have changed.

The story doesn't dilly dally about and immediately dives into the world of the "Exam" and we get a clear view of the personality of the MC. Then after a chapter or so, we get to see the ML (screaming). The overall development of the relationship between them is gradual and very natural. From time to time at the start of the story, I could definitely see sparks... more>> flying between them. The author manages to craft their personalities such that they are extremely complementary to each other, which not only helps with character development, but also the progression of the plot. I've got to say, they seem as if they've been married for years, helping each other stir sh*t in the exams

Although this is BL, it does not skimp out the details, specifically the horror/thriller/mystery aspects of the story. Not only does each 'exam' further unravel the plot as well as the characters' backstories, but it also develops the relationship between each character, not just the ML and MC. This story is comparable to reading multiple detective stories at once (imo). The pacing of the story is very good, comedy is also thrown in, this reader is very impressed. Each chapter not only illustrates the trials that the characters have to go through to survive, but you can also actually see the story being lead to its climax as more and more details are revealed.

A slight flaw in the story is that some mysteries don't really make much sense--- I'm not going to spoil, read the novel yourself. :) Definitely a must-read! One of the best novels I have ever read. No questions asked. Hehehehehehe <<less

it's good haha, I think Qin Jiu (001) and MC have a past together but both of them suffered the same fate of forgetting memories (even though it's a different cause : ML (001) forgot his memories because of the system malfunction, MC forgot his memories because of illness/trauma) so yeah both of them feel familiar but didn't even has a little damn clue about each other. Tbh I thought it's gonna frustrate me since both of them clearly close in the past but forget but it's not like that... more>> at all. Since they really are didn't have any clue, really, only feeling, FEELING ONLY WITHOUT ANY CLUE AHAHAHAHHA that's why I just have to forget about the fact that MC and ML supposed to be together since they aren't remember each other anyway

The exam question it's illogical not like Earth is Online. Most of them (since it's not completed yet) it's a mystery like guess how, guess who, and searching for a clue. The explanation of the death it's not scary at all. It's just, the NPC (former failed examinee/ punished invigilator) are sometimes mysterious and creepy (since they're bound to system and can't reveal anything) but the moment exam ended they're turned normal (like answering question and talk since they're once an examinee too). The MC it's not OP imo, he's just more calm and indifferent. Not like super genius who guess and all. Oh, MC is a risk taker too but not because he's brave but coz he just too indifferent. No worries he's only take the risk if he already really really annoyed with the situation. The ML is an invigilator 001, the code number is expressed his point and strength I guess (154 once explain this in the earlier chapter but I forgot). That's mean ML is once a powerful examinee. *Invigilator : an examinee who got a high score and passed the examination <<less

THE NOVEL IS AWESOME! Good plot, good romance, cool characters!

My only complaint is that... I need more JiuHuo! I miss them already! Give me more extras!! Also, more 922/154 and my girl 021! She was forgotten😔

Qin Jiu and You Huo are well-written. What I love the most is that both of them are very strong individually and they can make it on their own but they want to do it together bcs.. they do 😁 I love how they really don't give a sh*t about anything. In most novels of... more>> this type, it's mostly about figuring out how to pass the level of the game. But in this one it's mostly about, what kind of rules are they going to break this time😂
This novel made me cry the most. The way You Huo and Qin Jiu always found their way back to each other is just... beautiful...

Here are some quotes. They are spoilers for the story a little so read it only if you want to be spoiled. Btw, there are way more romantic quotes in the novel. These are only a few

Spoiler

Qin Jiu fell for You Huo 3 times!!!!

"My dear, if I left myself by your ear, would you be able to hear me?" - the truth about You Huo's earring!!!

"I'm not here to save you, I'm here to love you" - these two love to make me cry...

"I won't be afraid of you, I won't distance myself from you, and I won't look at you as a monster. That is how much I love you"

"My Big Invigilator's eyes are very beautiful. Very beautiful" - You Huo being insecure about his eyes and Qin Jiu reassuring him... believe me, you'll cry more when you find out about You Huo's eyes

"Even if the system throws me out and clears my memory, I will come back" - Qin Jiu!!! You are the standard, my guy!

"Reason? There is one right in front of me" - You Huo asking him what reason does Qin Jiu have to stay in the system and Qin Jiu saying that You Huo's the reason!!!

[collapse]

The quotes are so beautiful! Everything is beautiful! What else can I say?! I already started tearing up just by writing this review.

YOU HAVE TO READ THIS FOR YOURSELF! I promise, you won't regret it <<less

I find this a little too boring. After reading the author's other work, copper coins, I got all excited and came here hoping for another great read.

But oh boy, was I disappointed!! I like the world settings ig, a little, they're alright. But there's no chemistry at all between our couple. They're so bland, reading about them is like chewing sand. Really disappointing. They keep on bickering. The MC just embarrasses all the time the ML and I just fail to find it cute. I think it's annoying, also awkward.... more>> Boring, I keep on hoping he stops, but he doesn't. So the amount of times I've sighed in disappointment and boredom is rather high.

Our MC is way too unrealistic. In a world of fantasy, homeboy You Huo just over does it. Keeps on breaking all rules simply based on instinct, there's no way it would work in a real world; well, a real fantasy world. The author just so conveniently always makes his wrongs right... It gets irritating.

And I just love how the other characters keep getting left speechless by the MC and ML. There's no way that would happen in real life (real fantasy life). Like no, your actions aren't that awe inspiring, more like s*upid and "who let this guy in" kinda vibes. And after I've witnessed the MC degrade the ML that much there's no way I'd be afraid of the ML ever again, the author just conveniently made every other character dumb and cowardly.

All in all... 0.5/10, would not recommend. But you know, do what you want. This just isn't my cup of "meng"

However, Copper coins is amazing. 10/10 would recommend. Try it out. <<less

God, I love the relationship development between the two main characters so much. The (sexual) tension, the chemistry, and the intense love between the two main characters were written so well. I actually really like the flashback/non-linear story telling the author does. I have to admit it was a little slow in the beginning and some exams were dragged on a littttleee long, but the overall plot is great and the romance is just above and beyond. Every detail ties back together, and WOW my heartstrings are just being pulled left and right.

If you like TEIO you would probably enjoy this. Though, IMO this is much better in terms of translation, story-telling (in the og raw), and comedy.

tldr: I literally cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this hahaha. <<less

I dunno if its the author's writing style or the translator's writing style but the flow and format of the story is atrocious. I have a feeling that it's both because novel is incredibly flat and it doesn't help that it reads like edited MTL.

I originally wanted to write a review for this story because I remembered reading a few negative reviews that were almost enough to deter me from giving this story a chance. However going back and looking at the overall star rating, it's actually not that low, so hopefully others will decide, like me, to give it a chance too.

It's not that I don't agree with some of the less than positive comments pertaining to the story, but some of them appeared to be made before the story was actually finished.... more>> Understandably a well written story isn't only in the ending, however some of the things I read about in the negative reviews were actually resolved about 1/3 of the way into the novel, and other items (such as the OP nature of the MC and ML) actually had rather valid explanations once their backgrounds were revealed.

Spoiler

MAJOR SPOILER: The system was initially designed around the MC, and used the MC's life and experiences to grow and learn. It was almost a symbiotic relationship at one time.

[collapse]

Moving on to my actual review and thoughts. Simply put, I enjoyed reading this story. Someone had initially compared it to The Earth is Online, and I can definitely see some parallels, however I would say this story is a little less intense and while it does have some kind of creepy depictions at times, I don't think it's quite as severe, deadly, or gross as The Earth is Online. (If you haven't read that story yet, and you even kind of liked this story, I urge you STRONGLY to add it to your reading list, in fact even if you didn't like this story, I urge you to add it.)

I enjoyed the MC and ML both separately and together in this story, which isn't something that often happens. Obviously I loved the times they spent together even more, but I didn't think that either character was so weakly portrayed or written that they couldn't hold the scene on their own when needed. Their love is sweet and dedicated, one would even call it effortless if not for the fact they are trapped in a constant game of life or death. They are both strong and independent, but also integrate effortlessly together once they realize their feelings. Unlike a lot of two strong character relationships, there isn't a lot of resistance and angst to them getting together.

Spoiler

Except on the part of the system which continuously tears them apart. Luckily their feelings, no matter how many times they are erased continue to persist.

[collapse]

Spoiler

MAJOR SPOILER: One of my favorite lines in the entire story is near the end when the ML comes to help the MC finish destroy the system, and the system is trying to convince them that it's just an illusion and there is no need to be worry, everything they have felt and seen is all in their heads planted by the system, nothing is real. A simple line that only a ML can pull off as they casually blow up a system, "I'm here to find my reality." <3<3 Swoon Worthy<3<3

[collapse]

The relationships with the side characters is also enjoyable, you really feel like you are with a group of friends who are just doing what they can to survive. One of the interactions from the first arc pretty much sets the mood for the type of interactions you can expect going forward in the story.

Invigilator 922: If an answer like that can award points, I'll behead myself in celebration.
System: Total points for this part, 11 points.
You Huo (MC) : Give me your head to celebrate.

As for the actual tests themselves some make more sense to me than others. Some people commented that they are complicated and convoluted, to be honest, I can't say they are wrong, however this is something else that as you continue to read starts to make a bit more sense.

Spoiler

The tests don't get easier, however you learn that the system is actually broken, and getting worse and worse, moving farther away from it's intended processes. So naturally the tests would also start to break down as well. The MC and ML are aware of the nonsense, and will often mock the System for it's ridiculous rules and violations. Watching them make a mockery of the entire exam is actually supposed to be part of the fun.

[collapse]

So all in all I really enjoyed reading this, I'm interested in reading the author's other work, but I believe it's still being translated so I will probably hold off for now. I hope you give this story a chance, and if you give it a chance, I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading!

Spoiler

Side Note: There is no NSFW in this story, lots of implications, but that's where it ends. Take it as good or bad, just figured I would share.

THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING STORY!

The exam systems are horror, thrilling, brain wrecking (for me lmao), so suspenseful yet the characters can bring up the humor. The story is addicting, engaging, the pace is great with packed flow, divided into several arcs.
Spoiler

I separate the arc as follow, for my own reference in the future
1. Physics exam : hunter cabin
2. Language exam : black widow
3. History exam : island cave
4. Cleaning penalty : dream school
5. History re-exam : duke castle
6. Math exam : brandon town
7. Back story
8. Chinese exam : final battle

[collapse]

What I love the most is the characters and their dynamics. You will love all of them, even the side character, they're not in the story just as a canon fodder. And such a rarity in BL novels that we got amazing women (Chu Yue, Shu Xue, Wu Li, Yang Shu, 021, Zhao Jiatong, and even Zhou Qi). The bro squad also all lovable (154, 922, Yu Wen, Du Li, Old Yu, 1006). I love them all, I'm having such a hard time to say goodbye to them.

Our leads You Huo and Qin Jiu, their interaction growth from a rather comedic sarcastic bantering to comrades with tacit understanding to helplessly romantic couple. They found and complete each other. They're not a lone wolves anymore. It's a quite slow burn, so enjoy your time..

As the story progressed, many mystery and back story will unfold, everything just get better and better! Everything will all fit perfectly. Everything has its reason. The story also wrapped perfectly with well done closure to all our favorite characters.

So please read it!

This is a fantastic mystery thriller with a well developed plot, world building, and character development. It takes a little bit for the plot to ramp up due to the complexity of the world and because of MC and ML's amnesia. The unveiling of their shared history is methodical and evenly paced in a way that leaves just the right amount of suspense.

At first it seems that there is no possible way for MC and ML to get along with each other. And this is true for half of the... more>> novel, where there not a single inkling of romance to be found. Nevertheless, once the flood gates open, they make a great team. Together, they make a dynamic duo of equally strong troublemakers bringing fear and disaster to everyone around them. They aren't an openly intimate couple... at least on the outside. Behind closed doors, well. ¬‿¬

This is a great read if you're really into action, adventure, or mystery. However, be aware that there is gore and horror involved, so readers who are put off by those types of things might want to avoid this novel. <<less

It's so good that I binge read the whole novel in a few days. The plot, the main CP and the side characters are intriguing and full of mystery. Although I felt the ending was slightly missing something but that's just me being picky. Everything was answered and there were no plot holes (at least I didn't find any). The main CP is one of the cutest couple in the bl novels I've read till now. The MC and ML may look your typical characters who are cold and don't... more>> feel emotionally sensitive but as you read you realise that both are softhearted and caring people. Unlike many novels the ML in this one isn't two-dimensional whose only reason of existence is MC and actually has morals and bottom line like a normal person.

This story had great potential but lost the plot along the way. Before I get down to what didn't work for me, I'll first mention what did.

I liked the humour. I ended up chuckling now and then at some of the analogies used.

... more>> The plot concept was phenomenal and kept me invested enough to read through the first 20%.

Now, what I didn't like.

The questions mentioned in the exam didn't have logical solutions. Neither were they mind-blowing to a degree that you'd sit back and acknowledge that the MC and ML are brilliant for somehow solving the questions. At no point was I worried about the MC or ML. They were so strong and so unrealistically written that you know that they'll wriggle out of the situation using outlandish means. This makes reading through the 'problematic situation' tiresome. Because you know they're going to get out, you just don't know when and mind you, after a point, you won't care how. The chemistry between ML and MC lacks to a huge degree. There seems to be some tacit understanding between them where emotions are conveyed without words. Which is romantic and sweet for the people involved but becomes annoying for the reader who can't make head or tail of their motivations. The last 10% was difficult to read through. That's unusual because that's when the grand revelations happen and that's when a reader's intrigue is at its peak.

This will perhaps do better as a donghua with animation. But as a book, it was poorly executed. <<less

Rating a 5 for how I enjoyed this story.

I think a majority of these comments ring true for the story so I'll be concise as I can for what I personally thought.

Things to expect out of this story:

  • Translation quality is pretty good and gets across the humor (by kk translates since the links got hidden)
  • A feel good ending about enjoying normal life that I kinda liked. It feels like the characters have earned their ending
  • Fun scenarios that can be pretty nonsensical. It's not something you can easily guess at, so I recommend enjoying the ride the author puts you through
  • An adorable romance with leads that have so much tension but are so cute when they get together

Spoiler

I'm not going to lie, I felt like crying every time ML called MC "my dear" that's so precious??

  • A pretty easy to understand ending but it's very simple as well
  • A nice cast of characters that have personality and are pretty fun
  • A main cp that are pretty op so you know they'll make it out of it, the author is just here to show you how they do it
  • Spicy scenes that are fade to black but still surprisingly sensual
  • And a manhua adaptation on bilibili with pretty art
These are all viewed through my rose tinted glasses since I just finished the story and quite liked it but you might get something out of this review or notice something you dislike. I recommend this story though :) <<less
