I hate this novel. It's not exactly bad, but it just pushes all my buttons, so I can't stay silent.

You see, I like smart MC. I like kingdom building. I love rationality and practicality, probably more than it is rational or practical. This novel promises itself to be all of the above, and it fails. And not just fails, it fails offensively bad.

To make MC seem smart, everyone around them is dumbed down to the level of the mentally handicapped four year old children. And so, our MC, who has... more>> an intelligence of an average four year old shines like an unspeakable genius that he is.

Kingdom building fails on account of author never actually putting any real thought into how things work. Whether it is due to inability or plain lazyness is unknown, but I have a feeling that author displays his intelligence when he describes the MC. Which is to say, he's not that bright. That would be forgivable, had he wrote your average junkfood action-driven isekai, which you read to turn your brains off. But no, author decides that he is smart enough to tackle the subject, and then spits into the mind's eye of everyone trying to use a brain.

Lastly, there isn't an iota of practicality, rationality or realism anywhere in this novel. Protagonist's evety action is defended by the plot armor so thick, there is no place in this novel left for anything else. He behaves exactly opposite of what can be considered realistic, and author praises him from different POVs, somehow managing to create a circlejerk consisting of one person.

See, my issue with this novel is simple. It lied to me. It posed itself as some delightful food for brain, but turned out to be a poison. The author clearly went out of his way to try and sound smart, but it fails, fails, fails, because there is no substance. Even the quotes of real thinkers he picked (Machiavelli and Sun Tzu mainly) are such tired clichés by this point, it is a mark of bad class to use them. And he uses solely easy pickings.

I am not going to list all the ways in which this novels pretends to sound smart, only to end up st*pid. Just know, that this is an insult to any thinking being, and if you think it's smart, I am sorry for you. <<less

EDIT: I'm going back to the few reviews I wrote over the years and feel like I was too harsh on this novel. Must have been ranting more than anything else.

This is a fine novel and has some interesting parts. It tries to tackle some fairly deep subject even if it does so in a way that I would have to call either childish or junevile.

Defo not very realistic overall despite the title, but not that bad.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

The biggest problem I have with this series is misguided expectations. I expected a realist kingdom buliding novel. Maybe something like Release that Witch or, if you we had to add the "hero" element, Maou Maoyuu Yuusha. And yeah, it is super realist... from a 5-years old point of view. Actually, I would argue this novel is much more unrealistic than the average isekai. To give a few breakdowns of the problem from a "realistic" point of view (I'm not going into details, but some of the things that are kinda cliche in Isekai or japanese novels in general that I expected this novel to do differently, but somehow ended up worse than usual) :

    • Feudal society is very poorly represented. Nobles are just decorations, King is just a figurehead. No one seems to really care for power and authority, and everyone seems to mindlessly obey and follow the new king without any thought of betrayal or opposition to great changes. Damn it, even our modern society is far from reaching such an outstanding level of unity and loyalty. This means that within the kingdom Souma actually have very little opposition and he can just do whatever he wants.
    • Economy that would leave make a 10-years old facepalm. Other reviews go into more details on it, but the famine and economy in general in this novel just shows a total lack of understanding from the author.
    • Dumb people. How to make MC look smart? Make everyone else as smart as a 3-year old, of course! Now, okay I'm lying. Genius level people have 10 - 15 years old intelligence. Commoners have 3 - 5 years old intelligence, but smart enough to know how to read and write. Nobles are 5 - 10 years old (hopefully I'm not being too insulting to 10-years old here)
    • Lack of culture clash. This is common in isekai novel to assume that if it comes from japan, then anyone from all culture will automatically like it to death. There is of course food, but there are others. For example, a japanese song (untranslated, sung in japanese) is universally loved by everyone in the country despite not understanding anything being said. Sarcasm aside, there is just a total lack of culture clash between what Souma is proposing to do and the existing culture in the country.
    • The fact that farmers starving didn't think by themselves that maybe, just maybe farming food crops could help. Or that fishers farming never though that maybe, just maybe, eating the things they are fishing could help (I'm not joking, there is literally a scene like that).
    • Action and reaction. The world is dead, until the MC does something. If MC does nothing, then no one does anything. For a novel that should have a strong political elements, this is unacceptable.
    • Interesting stuff is skipped. Or more precisely, often MC wants to do something, and we immediately get the result, but the execution of it is skipped and treated as something too trivial to bother explaining... even when, by modern standard, it is actually something pretty hard or even impossible to do. Some of the things he does end up being incredible only because the difficulty of the process is ignored by the author (either on purpose because he knows he can't write stuff this smart, or unknowingly because he doesn't even realize the process is difficult).
As for the rest, well we have 1D harem members, s*upid food stuff as usual, a lack of proper tension, a protagonist that don't make much sense, etc.

However, if you like:

    • An idealistic world where people are too good to be true, but are just too dumb to survive without the hero's basic knowledge.
    • A world where any simple things done by the protagonist will receive universal glorification by others (including heroines swearing to give him her chastity over the most basic stuff; picking up girls has never been easier).
    • Kingdom building dumbed to 5 years old with a slice-of-life feeling
then you're good to go. Don't waste any minutes, read it now. And all sarcasm aside, this isn't that bad. Just know what you're getting into. If you want *now a thing to turn your brain off and do some mind m*sturbation, I mean why not? We all love dumb stuff sometimes. <<less

It's terribly overrated. It was in recommendations to RTW so I decided to give it a try. It disappointed me very fast.

MC can only be as smart as the author. But this author failed to make a smart MC so he made everyone around dumb instead.

Also, the characters are too simple and flat like cardboard.

I came to this novel because it was recommended as similar to Release that witch, however it was hugely disappointing. It may seem different from a usual JP LN initially, however it has the same tired tropes. One dimensional characters, super delicious Japanese food, harem, etc. The redeeming factor which would be the intrigue and politics is wholly unsatisfying with the MC taking Machiavelli to be some genius Messiah and trying to follow his policies to a T even when it makes no sense. My final complaint is that There... more>> is not a lick of seriousness in the novel. When meeting other people whether it be nobles or kings he always starts of with inane banter with his harem, and all the new characters do is chuckle and say "what an interesting king". I understand this is a fantasy novel with magic and whatnot but you cannot have me believe that in this world where it is stated several times that people are killed for disrespecting nobles everyone is just gonna be ok with these s*upid interactions. The only reason I am giving it a 2 star and not a one star is that if you want a relaxing vapid read this is for you. It is like playing a game on sandbox mode. It will be fun for a bit, but nothing more. <<less

I will be honest I kinda liked the novel. It does have a few bad points however.

1) there are sections written like a history text book. Not in the sense of a information dump/pile but in the sense of "an this is were that saying came from" or "theatrical performances will later go on to exaggerate this event."<---even if the MC were to die by the end of the novel we are already given information his legacy was. Its literally putting the cargo before the cart and the cart before... more>> the horse.

2) things progress too smoothly in his favor when implementing military ideas from the original world into the new one and just in general. He should a faced at least another revolt espically when the ranking and means of earning land changed. The samurai revolted because of such a change in their status during reforms under imperial rule. Also why did the s*avers not try to revolt when he essentially declared the s*ave trade to be over. What about the other merchant guilds and traders when he began taking over their businesses?

This is something that actually happened in medieval Europe. The king of Denmark went to war with a merchant guild to institute economic reforms and fill his own coffers. An the king of Denmark LOST the war because the merchant guild was having none of it after he attacked one of their port cities in a attempt to have control over trade.

So things progress too smoothly in MCs favor.

3) katana supremacist. In the novel there is a scene were one of the characters takes a katana and slices basically clean through another sword or whatever as a "test". I am telling you right now if you ever did that with a katana it would break if not have a big chip into its blade.

The forging techniques used in Japan for the katanas they had created a soft core. European swords are "hard" core swords. The advantage of the soft core was in weapon maintenance not because it made the sword or edge more durable but because of improved stress relief and help in preventing cracks going too deep into the blade. An arguably you will have a easier time bending the katana out of shape due to its soft core.

The katana is also generally a cutting sword. European swords were intended to be semi-dull so when worse comes to worse they can still bash peoples heads more or less. The aim was not to necessarily cut the opponent; that's what the falchions were there for. The katana however is very much so intended to cut. This is bad if your facing opponents with heavyish armor because your not going to be cutting through anything with it anytime soon when it comes to armor.

The katanas are good swords for their intended environment and usage just like the european swords were for their environment and intended usage. If you plan on bringing both of them into the same environment and have them clash the katana is not going to be as useful when dealing with armor as a back up weapon because their intent is on their cutting power while european swords are more dull or more blunt because of the european usage of armor and shields. <<less

This is so great! The way it's written makes me think of all those documentaries about people where they insert whatever videos of those people and in-between you have people making comments about what that person did and why it was important.

The characters are well written and each have their own motivations which makes (most of) them relatable; there are bad ones ... more>>

but those are few and far between.

The characters I love the most are King Souma, our MC, and Kaede as the two have such great chemistry whenever they are together. But while this is shaping up to be a harem novel it does seem t develop the characters and not just pair the MC with every girl as Kaede is more a friend to Souma than anything else.

Long story short, this is a great read and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. <<less

The heck? Im quite speechless while reading the negative reviews here. Why do you guys bother writing nonsensical review while you dont even understand anything?

This is very good story, the author is a man of culture. I dont mean he loves tight, armpits, or any fetish here but more on literal meaning. He even isnt embarassed implying his work is based on real world conflict by referencing them at MC's conversation with other characters.

I shall put warning first here. The world setting is quite peacefull with almost to no bloodbath,... more>> by that I mean humanity vs humanity war, as humanity focused in figthing against monster outbreak. There's only 2 humanity war told in detail in the story, Elfrieden Civil War I which is roughly 16~18 years before MC is summoned (told in one of chapter about former Queen Elisha, the princess' mother), and Elfrieden Civil War II + Dukedom Campaign. 3 actually if you count the other one, with another 2 should be expected in near future.

[Major Spoiler about that one war and for those who wonder why the King easily give his throne away to MC]

Spoiler

Elfrieden Civil War IIb, happen in pararel universe where MC didnt become King after he got summoned. In which he have less authority and less competent personel to help him reform the Kingdom, thus making all corrupt nobles incite Civil War and even conspired with the Dukedom to kill him and successfully invading all the way to the capital. Told by chapter about former queen Elisha as she send her memories to her past self to warn her about incoming disaster. Thus warn her husband (the King) which then together with Army General make plot to abdicate himself straight away after summoning the MC, and the precussor of current Civil War II as well, by trapping those corrupt noble and the Dukedom to finish all of them in one swept so our MC have easier way reforming the Kingdom. So if you stopped reading this novel because you think its bullsh*t how the MC have easy way becoming King, congratulations, you have played yourself.

[collapse]

Thus making the story more on peacefull side, with composition of 25% entertainment culture implementation, 10% food culture, 35% political contents, 10% tech advance, 15% comedic contents, anddd 1000% pure romances. You wont find an arc without romance here, if you dont read about MC's romance then it will be another characters'. Again, the story theme is peacefull, so you wont find NTR or forced engagement bullshitery here. Everyone got waifu (s), everyone be happy. I've read many romance themed story (normal one of course, spare me the shoujos, yaoi, or yuri) and I dont think the romance here cringy. Sure for some its too high sugar content, or even dont care about side character's life stories. But I still stand my stance, the romances here is good. They really deserves each other.

The political content or the talk-no-jutsu part is mostly about tricking or making other follow someone way of doing for the benefit of their own country and the main focus of the story itself after the Kingdom Reforming is more about is the MC really summoned to other world, if he isnt then what on earth happen to the world. Pun intended. And as I said before, its still on peacefull theme, so no sending assassin over assassin again and again while shouting "ill kill you next time, motherfu****!!" or going around b*tchslapping every people he met.

There's no shounen-esque battle iirc, where you can get power up by nakama-power bullshitery, training arc which last the whole volume, or stronger enemies the farther you step forward. The battle (or should I say "the action's part") is well planned, tho some sh*t do happen, it solved pretty well thru some determination and quick thinking.

The characters are well liked, the MC is no beta character as he wont mind killing people if he deem that necessary like when fighthing against Dukedom or when wiping out the corrupt nobles. The supporting character have their own development and role. So far no one is forgoten. Even the 'villain' one. You can sympathize with their character, thinking, and their ideas too as the story progress and you know more about them. There's technically no filler content, well, if you think reading stories about side character is filler arc, then you might say yes there are filler content. But personally, I think those stories are good character development and quite fun to read, heck, there's some foreshadow hidden in those stories sometimes.

The last two are personal opinions it surely vary for each of us readers, but if you expecting something along cruel world where everyone fu*k each other, or conspiracies to kill enemy country top leader, or MC going around the world making harem and then forget them after few chapter, this novel dont suite you. Do yourself a favor and leave quitely. No need to make fun yourself by typing review when you understand jacksh*t.

Especially if you think MC is OP, dude, are we even talk about the same novel? Even normal soldier will win against MC if they doing fist fight. It literally stated by the MC and any other character who were asked about MC strength. <<less

I read 4 volumes and have enjoyed it somewhat.

The biggest problem is that the author tries to present the MC as a knowledgable and clever person and he tries to use historical precedents for this purpose. The way the author presents and interprets the real historical events is at best sloppy and childish. It hits your face real hard every time he tries to make MC seem clever. If you can ignore the fact that the author did a very bad job at researching and presenting the historical events and... more>> drawing laughable conclusions from them, then you might enjoy this series.

Actually, the author also handles quite a lot of problems in an unrealistic way and calls them stratagems.

Lastly, the MC is quite timid when it comes to personal relations with the harem members and doesn't really have a strong character.

Personally, I had to stop after the 4th volume due to mediocre writing. In the end, it is a shounen title. I shouldn't have expected an actually clever MC. <<less

This novel is not terrible, the writing is overall ok and at least the sentences are coherent, unlike so many other novels. However, this novel made me cringe so much, I just can't give this a good rating. Overal I would say this novel just does not have anything standing out for it. It is an average novel with one or two good moments.

One of the biggest problems I have with this novel is that it treats the reader like an idiot. There are so many explanations, and everything is... more>> explained at least twice if not more. Every thought MC has is not his own but is taken from some philosophy text. Every thought of MC is explained in terms of logic, then in terms of our world example, then using the quote of a philosophy book and then the quote is explained once or twice. Some chapters consist of nothing but explanations with backstories and histories. But those histories are not even correct some of the time, in a sense that they don't really apply to the situation in a way the author tries to present. It is really s*upid how MC explains things to people of the other world using the language of our world. It is clear that explanations are for the reader and not for the characters. And people are just "I didn't get it, but whatever, this stuff usually works out, so I will just go along with it". There is also reintroduction of characters every darn chapter and every darn volume. No, I will not forget the goddamn main character and his wives between chapters. It feels like the author just needed to fill in the space because he couldn't come up with enough story to fill the volume.

The second big problem is MC himself. It might seem like he is smart, but if you think about it, MC is actually quite dumb and a coward. For one, as I said he doesn't have his own thoughts and justifications, he always refers to the history and philosophy of the Earth. He makes decisions when it involves other people, but when it's about him, he is super indecisive and has to ask someone else to make a decision for him. The thing that ticked me off the most is when he said to the princess: "I don't want to have s*x with you right now because I don't think I can support and care for you and a baby properly." You are a goddamn king of a country and you can't care for your wife and kid? Are you kidding me? I took him 6 whole months to just kiss the princess. And six more months to kiss the second chick. By the way things are going, they will get married when they are sixty. Well, he did eventually start sleeping with the princess after a year of a platonic relationship.

Spoiler

The biggest flaw in this novel can be seen in volume 6. So he gets an invitation to the dragon country to make a contract with a dragon (which basically means marriage to a dragon). He tells it to everyone and leaves to do just that. Then, after he gets to dragon country and meets the dragon he goes full ret*rd. "Can I bring he back without the contract?", "Dragon, I have four fiances and I am not from your country, are you OK with me?", "I need to go ask permission to make a contract from everyone". Then he goes back with the dragon and basically says: this is the dragon, will you let me make a contract? I am not in love with her, but I am sure I will fall for her eventually.

Another s*upid thing is that it is portrayed that he wants this dragon because she generates electricity. He says she is going to be so useful because of that. But it is super easy to make a basic manual power generator. Why the hell do you need a dragon to generate electricity? You can make basic power generator and even basic capacitors super easy. He also has scientists who can help him make those. It just doesn't make sense. The author just artificially inflates the value of the dragon chick to make her seem more important than she is.

And volume 5 is just an embarrassment and should not exist. It is goddamn awful and shows MC in the worst way.

[collapse]

MC also doesn't spend any time with his fiances in a romantic way. They have like one date per month or even less. You would think in a slice of life novel like this they would build the relationship a bit better, but no. The girls just fall in love with MC because plot. Not only that, they are basically just holding hands all the time. They were engage for a year and they are only holding hands sometimes. What the hell is this? Everyone in the castle tells them directly "just start making babies already!". It's like the author is aware that he is being s*upid, but he insists on it anyway

Speaking of plot. The author tries to have this intrigue and mystery, but it is so transparent, that pretty much everything is obvious. You can predict how this novel will turn out very early and very easy. There is only one thing in this novel was not obvious, but turned out to be not that interesting, is the former king's explanation. Everything else just falls in place they way you expect in the best way for MC. Overall the novel is just smooth sailing for MC without any good or interesting points. He just does not stand out in any way. I mean usually the novel would have some nice moments that makes you want more. There is nothing of the sort here. No epic victories, no major plot twists, no hardships. The biggest problem MC faces is the large amount of paperwork. There is a lot of missing potential in the story. <<less

The MC was summoned as a hero, and the King did not hide the reason for the summoning. Then, something happen and the King gave up his position to the summoned hero, that is a first for summoning stories. The MC was hoping for some cheat like powers, but did not receive any. Great series. I enjoy every chapter, and find myself coming back to reread them while I wait for new ones. MC tackles real problems as he modernizes the kingdom that summoned him. The demon lord is out there somewhere, but the internal issues of the country comes first. Excellent management, decisions made with modern world knowledge backed by our experiences and sciences. The author is not intelligent enough to pull off what he set out to do.

That's not all it is, but I could deal with the overdone tropes, shallow characters and lackluster worldbuilding, if there was a competent story behind it all. As it stands this story revolves around a kind of dumb MC which the Author bends the world and characters around, so that the MC appears amazing.

The problem is, the MC is written at a level of intelligence that is barely even average, which means all the other characters... more>> are borderline mentally challenged and the world is nonsensical and unrealistic.

The best example of this is the famine crisis right at the start; I bet the author read an article or watched a documentary about cash crops and the issues they can bring, without actually understanding the complex systems behind that, then decided to put that into a medieval world where it makes even less sense.

I wouldn't even recommend this story to children, since the way it's written implies the concepts the MC uses are based on real knowledge from how the real world works and they should learn something from it, but that is just not the case at all. <<less

I lost interest during the first volume. Aside from nothing really happening, I didn't like the characters, nor the author's incompetence which was to the point that it broke immersion for me.

He overly stresses and outlines frivolous things as secrets that if it got out, it could completely destroy the country, but the things in question are what anyone would consider to be common sense. Something like demons are capable of thought... Now there is a shocker..., Or you can eat a root or an octopus... Really? I'm supposed to... more>> believe that this kingdom has existed for at least 14 generations, and no one has tried to eat an octopus they fished up? Are you making fun of me?

The (revolutionary) ideas he brings forth are so tame and basic, that it's not believable that the county wasn't able to discover them itself over the time it existed, creating a disconnect with the imersion of the world.

On top of all of this, the women seem grossly incompetent and seldom harbor thoughts that aren't about vulagrities. They spend their time mostly gossiping about s*x. I mean, it's somewhat realistic, but I read to escape reality, and I want intelligent, wholesome and comedic female characters with beautiful personalities, not repulsive and vulgar women that resemble girls you'd meet in a serrority.

And the main character is the typical unimpressive virg*n MC who blushes and completely breaks down, mouth agape in awe and any attractive girl that walks by. <<less

Its simple novel with even simpler plot. Its good material to make manga off it but as a novel it is standard hero summoning with little novelity added by writing about economics. There is much information to digest at the start of the story. Language and written barrier is nonexistant. There is no barrier existing between Japaneese citizen from modern era to magically enhaced medieval era country. It would be good to just add few barriers between our Hero and his success... yet there are none to speak of. Even... more>> magic, that he got.. He somehow knew how to use it and it was described in few sentences. "He as hero needs a power, just like other Heroes, so he does and know how to use it in less than a minute... seriously? For now I read just few chapters, yet it makes me throw up by reading next clitche setting in medieval era. If author has something new to write, write it in interesting way and do not add expressions which are seen in anime and manga to make it more funny and cute. It is by far one of the most clitche novels ever. Thats why I like stories from the perspective of demon lord, or necromancer or the like. Which makes it stand out from all other novels. All characters which were seen for the first chapters, were naive, s*upid and our hero was the wisest of them all.. yeah. At the very least make him a minister of treasury at the start, then all economy and then make him a king... its so confusing and not realistic in my taste that all of it sounds like a joke and not a novel.

To all those dissatisfied by this novel I recommend those titles:
Release the Witch - is by far the most enjoyable read I have gotten my hands on. It is about politics, trade, economics, strategy, kingdom managment etc. Even magic. So yeah. It has all the good points of this novel but better. Even romance is in somewhat harem tune but in realistic way.

Overlord: This is such clitche title that most of you must know. Necromancer as a king of his small kingdom in another world based on game which our MC played. Clitche but in a fresh way written

Please recommend in comments novels which were better than this Clitche story. <<less

An enjoyable read, unlike some minority novels that I've read where MC have everything provided to him with a silver spoon, this one has valid reasons for doing so.

The philosophy and the plans implemented are great as well.

More of an intellectual read rather then just a light one.

Got summoned to another world, forced to be a king of a kingdom which had many problems as quest (food, money, corruptions, war, politics and etc etc +demons), plus get the princess as his future wife queen. Now, what and how will the MC solve the “quest”, is the main story which is just great. If you prefer this kind of genre, this one must be put on your reading list.
