I would rated it higher, but the female characters are terrible, especially Su Menghan. She asked the MC for help when she needs him, criticizes when she does not need him, and asks him for money when the MC is technically poor. Also, a lost some respect for the MC:

He did not want to get involve with a guy that was harassing a couple. Later the girl fell to her death, probably raped, and now the MC wants to get involved. Either do not try to involve yourself at all, or he should have interfered early.

I do not understand how more s*upid can the MC become. Why would you try and save someone that tried killing you. Not only that, he is helping someone from the same clan as the guy that killed the girl from earlier. The MC says he does not want to get involved with unrelated quarrels, but he gets involved with the enemy of his enemy. He does not help innocent bystanders, but has no problem helping an enemy, he is definitely a hypocrite. The MC is too frustrating, dropping this series. <<less

Started out good for about 50-100 chapters but then it turned into a harem fest, I mean girls here girls there, there everywhere, why do xianxia novels do this, the harem aspect just kills everything if you just keep on focusing on these girls, in the end it turned into some japanese type harem crap, seriously tr*sh

Reviewed after finished reading 97 chapters of proper translation and 1500 chapters of mtl.

Genius Sword Immortal tells the story of Ye Feng, an immortal cultivator who found himself in the body of a high school student and live in the middle of modern world. However, previously he was not a powerhouse, and even in the current world, he has to restart cultivation from the very beginning and scrounge for artifacts and elixirs to promote his own cultivation.... and his girlfriends', his family, his girlfriends' families, etc....

It shouldn't be surprising for... more>> those who have seen the novel's genre that it's a harem. A"pure harem" as some of you might say.

Within the earliest one-third of the story, what I thought was that the author perhaps gave the wrong title. Shouldn't it be "Genius Playboy Immortal" instead of "Genius Sword Immortal"!? But later developments were surprisingly refreshing and not at all boring nor controversial. Better yet, the Author managed to give proportionate attention to all of the girls in the harem, didn't let them disappear into nihility although Ye Feng left them for a long time in the course of his training to gain strength. A bit spoiler here: Who you see in the beginning, you'll see again in the end. In short, it contains "no-anguish" romance which only lacks extra chapters for fluffy moments.

However, the attention to romance doesn't mean GSI lost out on others factors, because it has awesome world construct, well-fleshed character and (although I don't understand much about the strength system due to mtl) sufficiently good plot. Of course, it's not perfect; there are dragged out arc and nonsensical MC decision as is commonly present in xianxia/xuanhuan novels. Nevertheless, in the end those weaknessess were not excessive to the point where the novel became distasteful. TL;DR, I'm liking it and will definitely still follow the proper translation. <<less

Well this is modern world but do not be mistaken. Law and order, police are fart in front of MC and the martial world. The things which are interesting is the usage of modern weapons against the xianxia martial artists. Apart from that the setting is the same. Families, clans, disciples exist. It too follows the law of the jungle. Anyone can murder someone easily and the police wont be able to do anything about it. Good points
1. Interesting concept of modern weapons and the martial artist.
2. Entertaining... more>> and good pastime

Bad points
1. Unrealistic modern world. In this world apparently martial artists don't fear media and bad rep. They bully anyone they feel like.
2. Almost every guy apart from MC is a sexual harasser or a rapist. They see a beauty they want to openly harass or force her making the MC save her.
3, Harem is big but the chicks hardly get any characterization. Some are just there just for the sake of harem.

Basically its a typical xianxia novel about MC's rise to power. Don't expect too much from the modern world concept as it is just a typical xianxia world where strong bullies the weak. Entertaining and a good pass of time.

All I have said above is strictly for the first 600 chaps. After this the novel starts going downhill. There are nonsensical arcs and all fights which makes no sense and a very very rushed and an absurd ending. Its like the author knew he f*cked up and just ended it. So taking off my starts here and giving it 2. <<less

This novel is a very good modern xianxia with all the right elements.

Characters have personality that allow readers to feel and their decisions are understandable and logical if you take into account their personality. It's a fun read and I definitely recommend it.

For me what really makes this one shine above the rest is the setting, which is in modern world, unlike some mysterious continent you have no idea about.

Also, this world follows modern laws, it isn’t like the other novels where killing is just another thing, this world has police and all, killing has its consequences.

And the main character uses his brains to solve stuff rather than just kill and pillage.

My only problem would be that maybe he’s a bit too kindhearted but whatever, the setting more than makes up... more>> for it, also the story is just getting more interesting (chapter 50 *boy that escalated quick*)

Definitely has its flaws but are minor compared to the change it has than other such novels.

EDIT : after 800 chapters of mtl ive decided to drop it, the main character is just too... empty.. With absolutely no character motivation than " I need to get stronger " and unnecessary setbacks because the author felt that the MC enjoyed a bit too much. while I like harems, what I consider more important is more than just a 1dimensional or 2 dimensional character, a character with depth, even if its just the one true love route i'd still prefer it over 2d characters like in this one. <<less

A story with ONLY unreasonable people. That's every character, every bit of plot, and every bit of dialogue just stemming from people utterly disregarding each other.

And every character they run into belongs to a gang. That... isn't a very good running joke or plot device.

Refreshing the novel, which is a mixture of modernity and the world of martial arts, though not perfect. Interesting characters, story easy to read. Present your raisins. The hero is not s*upid, and a large harem not annoying. No boring growing strength, for the sake of power.

Interesting stuff I tell ya not the usual Xianxia cliché where "I will kill you because you offended me! Oh no you're stronger, I am dead! Better call my whole family to take revenge for my death! *Rinse and repeat" its different in that it has character development and that the MC is not some OP psychopath. Early on it focuses more on world building and character development and a bit of training here and there. The character interactions can be at times hilarious and that they don't feel bland... more>> at all which is good. Also they're in modern China so theres that, All in all an interesting read and I'm hoping to see more. <<less

Really interesting MC and story imo. The only stuff annoying me a bit is that girl Su Menhan, the author stays way too much time on her and her drama but it'll have to end at one point and MC is not at the stage of openly kicking asses yet (chap 50).

So that annoying point will probably disappear at one point.

Extremely well written, suspenseful, and the main character isn't cowardly or hesitant, he's smart and he gets girls.

Maybe a good novel for new readers, but extremely underwhelming for NU veteran.

Don't trust me? just read the first 50 chapters. Furthermore, it doesn't get better...

The cultivation system is horrifying, they use it as if they were talking about a game character level:

"My cultivation level is 50years"=" I'm level 50"

... That doesn't even make any sense... Does everyone has a cultivation meter with them?

Also, this is far from being a wish-fulfilment story as the MC is getting tr*shed by stronger people...

Absolutely don't recommend it to veterans.

The novel is clearly targeted at teenagers, as adults will have a hard time suspending disbelief at the amount of idiotic, self-defeating decisions the MC makes, for no particular reason.

Of course, for immature teenage readers it's also normal that every discussion or really any interaction with a member of the opposite gender is fraught with sexual tension, or, say, that a female martial artist would simply stop fighting and give up if their clothes get disheveled and show some skin.

I found this novel a while ago, and didn’t read it cause of so few chapters. But I couldn’t find it afterwards! And I forgot to bookmark it!

Thank the great cupcake god for allowing me to find this awesome novel once again. It is Lot different from regular xianxia and wuxia. It is more... original. unique, even. The only novel I think would be similar is Wicked soldier king. Damn I have such high expectations for this series.

Mixed bag. Xianxia + wuxia + gangster + business + politics in the city. A bit story telling. Good dialogue, good scene, good plot (but a bit confused). Good translation. Worth reading.

Impression as of Ch.52. Update at the end.

The usual fish-out-of-water story, but with a twist. Instead of a modern man transmigrated to a mysterious world, it is a cultivator who is sent into the body of an average person in the modern world. Each chapter proceeds very quickly, dispensing the need to discuss about the MC’s background or circumstances except for the bare minimum of information to establish the plot. There’s no awkward cringing about how a cultivator is unfamiliar with modern technology and environment, everything is resolved by merging... more>> the memories and knowledge of the original body. For some readers who want to get to the “good stuff”, it can be a plus. For others, it can be an opportunity missed for a more flavorful story.

Depending on your experience on reading xianxia novels, it can be a refreshing change from other ponderous series that throws walls and walls of text and info dump to place their setting. All you need to know is that some level of cultivation/martial arts exists in the modern world, like myths and legends, and for the ordinary practitioner firearms are still a serious threat but not insurmountable.

I find the series interesting, the premise has a nice hook and the modern setting somewhat prevents the MC from joining the usual “kill-them-all” crowd of other stories. It somewhat reminds me of Wicked Soldier King: getting involved with the authorities, the criminal underworld, all the while hinting at a martial/wuxia jianghu as well.

Will continue to read.

Update: Read MTL up to 770+. I have to say, the power-up ramping gets to ridiculous levels later on, it's like the difference between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. The MC and his select group were able to do pretty ridiculous things, such as and not limited to flying, submerge to nuclear submarine levels, utilizing a special array to cloak an entire island and soloing warships. The harem also grows progressively bigger and bigger (at last count, 7? 8?), and while the MC does spent time with each, it does mean the 'inactive' ones were shunted into the background and given a mere paragraph or two of mentions while he's away for chapters and chapters. In my review for Wicked Soldier King I mentioned the Hong Kong manwha "Black Leopard" and I worried about a future plot where people could headbutt an ICBM. If there's a novel for something similar, it could very well fit in this one.

It remains interesting to me, the proof is that I read the MTL. Chapters breeze past and soon I'm in the 700s; though it was somewhat helped by some chapters of 'powering up' which I skipped. <<less

This novel is amazingly well written. It's got love and hate, family drama. I love how the main character has his own set of rules that he follows. I dig the fact that he always goes for his master and doesn't forsake her. I'm a sucker for loyalty, even if he is technically cheating, he always goes back right? Though I'm really wondering why this novel hasn't been translated in 7 months. Can any fans start the movement and get this novel picked up by WuxiaWorld?

I was pretty interested in it at first but the harem tag seems to be dragging it down. MC acts way too complacent about his situation and just has a “it’ll work out somehow” attitude that really got annoying by the time I got to chapter 39. He’s your typical xianxia character who can do no wrong and is so virtuous and zzzzz...

Anyways, the story isn’t unbearable up till where I read but I have a feeling the more characters (especially women) are introduced the more the quality of the... more>> story will go down. I’m giving it a 4/5 but I doubt seeing myself coming back to read it any time soon. <<less
