Honestly, after reading all 4 volumes I am quite disappointed... Not with the series of course! My disappointment lies with how many low ratings this series got on this site...

First and foremost, this is a series written by Kawakami Minoru (the author of Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon) so you can expect several things when starting the series. Godly writing such as fully flushed-out characters, unparalleled world building, in-depth descriptions of action scenes, and MANY beautiful illustrations (by Satoyasu). One important thing to note if you're new to any of Kawakami... more>> Minoru's work is that all of his books are much lengthier than your average Light Novels (which can be a turn off for most readers that are use to light novels with less exposition). This is probably why the ratings are so low. I bet you that those low ratings were from people that didn't even finish the first volume too... Anyways, enough of that. Onto the story itself and thoughts on it. This will contain a small bit of spoilers in order to give you a general idea of the story.

Spoiler

This series takes place in a modern world filled with Ether (Magic). About everyone can use Ether but only the females (known as Witches) can truly utilize it offensively whilst men can only utilize it defensively. Thus, this world's power balance greatly leans towards women. Anyways, the creator of this world is known as the "Black Witch" (who's currently sealed on the moon) and said creator wishes to destroy her creation. Every 10 years an event called the "Hexennacht" happens and during this time the seal on the Black Witch weakens enough for her to escape. In order to suppress/reseal the Black Witch, the Witch designated as the world's strongest will confront her in a 1v1 battle (why its a 1v1 is a major plot point so I'm not gonna get too much into it). In every Hexennacht that ever took place, the Black Witch was always resealed but never defeated whilst the Witch that fought her always died. During the last Hexennacht, the mother of our second MC (Horinouchi Mitsuru) died. Due to losing her mother, Mitsuru sought vengeance on the Black Witch. However, in order to fight the Black Witch she must be designated as the world's strongest Witch (via the ranker system) in order to get that privilege. At the start of this series, she's a 3rd year in Shihouin Academy (a school designed in order to train Witches) and is currently ranked 4th strongest. During this time she'll meet a mysterious white haired girl of unknown origin named Kagami Kagami (our main MC). What's most interesting is that Kagami seems to be connected with the Black Witch in some way. The start of this story begins with the fateful encounter between Mitsuru and Kagami.

As for my thoughts on the series, what I mentioned in my first statement above is how I feel about this series overall. The main cast and even the background characters have depth to them and the latter actually feel like they're part of the story. My personal favorite characters are Kagami and Mitsuru's Head Butler. They both make the series much livelier with the comedic aspects they bring to the table. When it comes to the battle scenes, the author goes above and beyond to describe it in precise detail (which leaves little to the imagination but that's a good thing). There's also an illustration for every chapter as well (as some extras mixed it) which makes progressing to each new one more exciting.

Although, I do consider it to be a step below Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon in terms of overall quality but it's still a fantastic series nonetheless.

my overall rating would be a 4.7/5

P.S.
For those wondering about the Yuri tag. Yes, there is Yuri in here (between the 2 MCs). However, it's not a plot/key focus and doesn't really bloom until near the end of the series.

Spoiler

Their relationship doesn't really change much until volume 4. Pretty much, from volumes 1-3 they go from Strangers -> Friends -> Good Friends and in Volume 4 they become lovers.
