Shouji, who was born in a poor family, had the qualities of a “yuusha”. However, he was passing his days as a sloth, drowning himself in alcohol and potions(drugs). While relying on only violence to make a living, he encountered a girl who is a talented alchemist, but also mired in debt. Potions created by this little girl were mind-blowing as it had the highest purity he had seen. It was a product that was worth loads. He was through with fame and honor. He no longer had the desire to only make money to live as his purpose. He felt it wouldn’t be so bad to smuggle those potions in the underground world of crime and drugs. Brewing this restorative item that gets people high, in search of dirty money and comrades for his gang, hanging onto the potions that let him loose, the mad “yuusha” challenged the demons who are hidden in this demi-world.

Very interesting premise, here we have another author who puts some actual thought into his writing, to portray and implement the theme of "drug abuse" within a fantasy novel. One that is permanently controversial and concerns people from all strata of society. We also get a twisted MC who had everything, but lost all of it and hit rock bottom, drowning in a mire of crime and violence due to some reasonable circumstances. And yes, he's an absolute cold-blooded a**hole, but that's okay, because Shouji is not pretending to be... more>> a saint or sugarcoating his actions like the typical hypocrite characters.

Biggest plus, it's dark (er) fantasy (!), the literal dope of the fantasy genre, far away from all those happy-go-lucky stories, lacking in every aspect. Kudos to Japanese authors with some actual writing talent. <<less

Truly a masterpiece, a broken hero surviving as a gangster, taking care of his buddies while expanding his illegal potion/drug business, the characters presented and their interactions are top notch, there are no pure characters (except the bit*h that almost killed this novel) but no one is truly evil.

The only black spot about this novel is Resukia/Lesquia? (Waiting for official name), the last heroine that turns our hero into a yes man and makes him behave like a justice freak, she is basically a Mary Sue (Holier than thou all-knowing almighty hero). I can't believe that our slippery and treacherous but somewhat kind? Hero got turned into that though only for half of the last arc, the epilogue hints that she isn't the true heroine so I'm somewhat relieved.
