Xiao Duo is a eunuch who serves as Admiral Dong Chang who is known for being brutal and cruel in executing palace criminals. He helped King Fu ascend the throne to become Emperor.

At King Fu’s request, he saves Yin Lou, the late emperor’s concubine, and arranges for her to become the new Empress. Due to the unstable political situation, Yin Lou stays at Xiao Duo’s residence temporarily.

Both have their own past and understand each other. Initially Xiao Duo forced her to become Empress to repay her services but Yin Lou never wanted to become Empress and wished not to enter the palace.

A trip to Jiangnan brings the two closer and begins a forbidden love. Things are getting more complicated and one mistake can lead to death.

Moreover, Emperor Fu who was crazy about Yin Lou was worried that Xiao Duo’s influence as Admiral Dong Chang was too great to endanger his throne.

For the sake of the greater good, Yin Lou sacrificed herself and decided to enter the palace. She let Xiao Duo misunderstand her. The two people who initially fell in love must now endure pain and suffering.

Just finished it a moment ago, maybe because it's still looming large in my mind so at this moment I am giving it a 5, but I feel it's justified it's good. It's not perfect, but I love how good the flow is, how strong the characters are formed, and how human they are (as human as characters from a fantasy novel could be).

Bu Yinlou isn't the brightest bulb in the box, she generally looks a bit slow and unfocused. However the fact that she is able to see the... more>> big isdues (while being muddled about all other things), and the shrewdness that pop up from her mouth from time to time, speaks for a hidden intelligence, one that was trampled by neglect and inattention from her family as she grew up. There are novels that are extreme in describing neglected children being starved or beaten etc, this one is not, she was raised without lacking food or clothing befitting an official's girl, but she is like a house plant that's watered regularly then left unnoticed in the corner. I find it to be more interesting than the extreme abuse ones. I'd say she is a lazy but pragmatic girl who wisely chose not to burden herself with struggling when she saw struggling is futile, until she found what she wanted the most (which is Xiao Duo). I quite like her along with all her weaknesses (a lot) including her ancient views (which is natural for an ancient China girl, but is often aggravating and looks s*upid for us the modern readers).

Xiao Duo, ruthless and isn't a good person. But he is a very addicting ML to read. I won't write much like I write about the FL because he is 'as expected', while Bu Yinlou, I read comments of readers scolding her lol.

The Emperor, I like how he is presented in the novel, very well built. I will need to write a lot about him, because I also like him as a character. Not often do we get a villain who is not so deathly but persistently smells like rotten teeth. He is the annoyance that bites on your ankle and can't be shaken off. You can look down on him that he's a non qualified villain, but he carries his role as a stumbling block between FL and MC very successfully. He is intelligent but he manages to not achieve anything through his laziness and strange obsessions to play. He is easily deceived but also hard to ignore.
Lastly, the maid Tongyun, this is the smarter one of the mistress maid duo. Her decision at the end of the novel might enrage you, but I found it to be quite understandable. We are used to too docile maids, this one is loyal, devoted and sincere, but with a spicy mouth that nags her mistress relentlessly, she has personality, has desires and ambitions that she placed as secondary to her mistress', until the time she had to walk her own. Very cute girl. The ending of the main story might leave some unsatisfied because it's a bit short, but the author left a very long extra in the comments of the last chapter in jjwxc. The extra is very satisfying, it covers their life after the main story, their kids, etc. Hope it will be translated as well. <<less
