Comparatively among the stories of a similar type and genre of wholesome, soft, and fluffy slow romance, this one is probably has the weakest premise.

The main issue this story seems to have is the the fact that the characters are way unbalanced in terms of personality. While a similar story like 'Otonari no tenshi sama' tends to have the characters in a give and take scenario in which they come to rely and fall in love with each other, this particular story is a bit more like a huge pity... more>> party for the MC. The MC is clearly in an unstable financial scenario, but the characters around him annoyingly act as though because he isn't socially interactive enough it has led him to dressing poorly and being an insufficient human being. While this might not be their thoughts on it and actually understand he's not well off financially which leads him to taking constant part time work, they are not portrayed as acting that way. Kenichi is the super annoying popular friend who's trying to help his relationship but at the same time acts incredibly annoying and callous at times about making him hang out with the main heroine Rin and himself. Kenichi's girlfriend is rather extremely unpleasant and annoying in which she acts like the MC just incredibly pitable and not understanding why he doesn't react in a way that would favor Rin's advances. While it's not entirely an unseen before characterization for side characters, it is very over the top here in this particular scenario where they seem to be people of different financial and social standings pitying someone poorer than them.

As of the current translations and bit further into raws that I have read, the MC doesn't reach a state of give and take (balance) that the MCs of other stories like 'Otonari no tenshi sama' or 'After Coincidentally Saving the New Transfer Student’s Little Sister, We Gradually Grew Closer' have but rather is emotionally in debt constantly to the people around him.

Rin is essentially just grooming someone she found, into someone more likeable for herself. Changing for the better isn't a bad thing... but changing someone one sidedly like this in what feels more like a severe act of pity is not a good feel. She is not entirely dislikable personality wise, but the way the story is executed makes it feel like the MC is simply never able to even the field with her. The author seems to want that not to be the case since Rin does state he has likable traits as well, but those traits are not utilized well enough in the story so far to make it equal.

TLDR: It is not entirely dislikable and still a okay read, but weaker than similar stories of fluff romance. I just personally dislike the lack of balance between their relationship where Rin is supposedly this perfect goddess one sidedly grooming the MC and can seemingly read his mind and understand him to a perfect T despite not fully understanding his financial situation and still taking in his kindness for things that cost him money Ina time which he probably needs that money for himself. <<less

Your everyday Japanese romance male lead, avoiding fame and rumors like usual, get into self conclusion as usual, decided for "sacrificial act" to kill his feeling for Female lead, yeah something like that, and of course he had "popular guy" friend...

But if you could ignore those factor, so this should be enjoyable book for you

Still at early chapters but a good series. The interaction between MC and FMC build up slowly and feel a lot more natural than other novels I read. And for once, FMC is actually aware MC doesn't want to draw attention so she doesn't talk to him ay school. Hope this good flow will keep going.

Good stories. Initially, I think this novel like " otonari tenshi sama" with how MC and fMC encounter and daily interaction. But after read more farther I more love the MC about how his past and how his good daily deed. I love how fMC determination to support MC but not lacking sweet moment. Recommended it

Deserves a lot more praise. It's a good romance story that follows other examples but still has its own beautiful little quirks and differences.

Nothing special about this story. It uses all the cliches where MC is a loner and fMC is best girl. Since i've read tenshi, this feels inferior to it. Pacing is slow and MC is a wimp.

Conclusion: If you want something superficial, a time waster, and you're a big fan of romcoms, give it a read.

Dropping it at ch34 and might reread it if I feel like it.

It's... tiring
It starts off weird even by shounen standards and a lot of things happen, pretty quickly, but also quite repetitively. It's a bog standard "girl pushes boy to be confident" but to be honest there's nothing outstanding here. Romance relies on a balance: boy has to have something going for him, this guy doesn't. It's just the girl being pushy all day every day

At some point it stops being okay and just becomes a repetition of every day stuff with barely any conflict beyond "holy sh*t this girl... more>> is brave, what the hell is going on?". I mean, not that every day stuff is bad, but when it's the exact same skit every time it gets repetitive and boring <<less

if you've read or heard of otonari no tenshii or The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten, this story is similar to that. Although I feel like this is an inferior version of it. The comedy in this story is pretty good so you can still enjoy it with just the comedy of this. Though just 25 chapters in it seem the relationship development is fast-paced and some people don't actually like this kind of pace, that applies to me too. The characters aren't that bad but the heroine sometimes... more>> can really be annoying as hell. If you like Otonari no tenshii this is a bad version of it because of its pace and how the characters act is also annoying well that lies on my opinion thought it can still be enjoyable. <<less

You'll think, this story is a little forced

From FMC to popular guy who get along with MC, but they have the reason, even if it not noticeable

Spoiler

Chapter 42 is the first POV from FMC (this is what I'm waiting for ngl)

You can clearly know why she fell for MC even with just a little help (from MC point)

Edit: c75 FMC said

"That's why I'm happy. Someone tells me that I can't do what I shouldn't do and sees me as I am." (MC is the second person for her who seeing Her true self, not a perfect human like other seen, after her best friend)

And the Riajuu/popular guy is always have the same class with MC from elementary to high school. So they know each other even if MC don't want to. On chapter 99 it shown why he want to befriend with MC

Edit: c77

Spoiler

Why he stay Dense with many hint the Heroin pointing out? She even life in his house for full 1 week (or more) on summer holidays and always going to his house everyday on weekdays

I really want to enjoy this series but man, now I must bear His Denseness after 70+ chapter and he doesn't try to progress their relationship

My previous rant is washed away

This is ABSOLUTELY WHOLESOME

I can finally enjoy it on truest sense

Don't usually bother writing reviews aside from giving stars but felt I had to mention I saw one review that said MC was being groomed. At least up to my current spot, I dont see anything other than the sterotypical low self-esteemed MC and slightly pushy fMC. I'd like to think anyone who knows what grooming actually is would read this story and know that there is no comparison between pushing someone to do better and completely exploiting and abusing them.

I'm enjoying it, reminiscent of The angel next door, melting... more>> the ice queen and silent princess <<less

The story is quite likeable, its just that, I hope the author will give a POV of the girl at least so he/she can explain why the heroine is so clingy to the MC, cause if not, their interaction is quite forced in my opinion. Nevertheless, I still like the novel.

Overall I don't think it's bad but I don't understand how people like this MC. He's got absolutely no decent qualities. So far in 25 chapters it's just been him getting led around by the finger, with an allergy to saying No. Just like every other Japanese MC. I mean the girls fine, she's got an actual personality. A completely unrealistic personality but it's a novel, whatever. I think what I hate is there's so many chances for an interesting MC but it's all the same.

Look, I wanna see an... more>> MC in one of these novels just say, "no I don't want to be close to you." and actually stay true to that feeling. Boom. Interesting. Let's see how it develops from here. But no. "I don't want to be close to you" "well I want to be close to you" "well I guess I don't mind" it's always the same. <<less

The protagonist is very dense even by romcom standards but this story is quite sweet, albeit cliche. It's no Angel Next Door but it's pretty good in its own right if you're looking for fluff. Though it still makes no sense to me that the girl fell in love with him because he gave her some potatoes lol.

Overall, I like this story - it's warm, not very dramatic, and quite pleasant to read. FMC is wonderful.

But.

I know there is a tag about dense protagonist and I agreed to it - there are different levels, I told myself that maybe it wouldn't be that bad, but folks, there should be limits. It's hard to write such a hopeless MC and this one even beats Angel Next Door and fights for the top spot with Melting Ice Queen.

It's amazing what kind of dense load appears here. He wouldn't understand... more>> what was going on if fMC was lying naked in front of him with her legs spread.

Seriously too much. Around chapter 50 and above is the apogee, it's almost impossible to read without wishing fMC would find a guy with balls.

The guy emphasizes every chapter that he is not worthy of her. He's absolutely right. <<less

The story is standard, which is to say a very pleasant read.

The only thing is that after that first translator, everyone else after him only uses MTL with little to no proofreading and editing. It’s extremely hurt when reading broken sentences and weird subject/object indicator, even the names are sometimes wrong.

Another series similar to "Otonari No Tenshi" a romcom that tell's the story about an "angelic" beautiful girl meets "dame ningen" negative boi.

it's decent light novel to read at your "me time", but still lack in several area.

The minus of this LN is about the characters.

the constant "i can read your mind" things is just too annoying. maybe the author think it's what smart people's do in their interaction, but it's just another form of invading other people privacy. also the level of psychological skill in those smart characters conversation... more>> are just too advanced.

Rin become misandrist, from years of constant flirts from lots of boys.

"i know what they want from me"??

That just being narrow minded and judgemental.

one could never clearly perceived their partner intention, without years of relationship.

in my opinion. in whole Rin's life, she might got approached by lots of idi*ts that clearly and openly show their intention. thus she got disgusted. that means, she never met any clever womanizer bastard that could fake their emotion, intention, and personality to get what they want.

so it's lucky for her to meet a pitiful boi named Towa early.

but it's another flaw on how she could read others mind so clearly (without any real deep crash and burn interpersonal experience) she just... could do it naturally (sigh) <<less

I'm just gonna state that for people that's preparing to read this novel, it would be better to avoid trusting any review that didn't hit past chapter 80 mainly due to how much thing people would missed out especially on how FMC fell for MC etc (It isn't because of potato that FMC fell for MC like what most say so you pretty much just ignore it)

Character -
MC - Might come across as dense when you first read but later on in the story, you would understand... more>> it's more because MC doesn't know what is love due to his past and he did show growth throughout the entire story and even decide to be more honest with FMC with his feeling at chapter 100+.

FMC - Although it is portray as her being aggressive and pushy, it's mainly because she is aware that MC is extremely try to keep a distance from most thing which is why she chose to be aggressive and pushy to make MC aware of her feeling. Chapter 90+ FMC decide to be more honest with her feeling with MC and even ask MC upfront regarding his situation instead of blabbering like what most FMC saying '' I understand '' and felt pathetic when she cant understand the pain he went through.

Side Character - Ain't exactly the annoying pushy friend but actually try to help MC be more aware of his changes and help him when needed without doing more than needed.

Story -
Although people compare it to Otonari no Tenshi but it's quite different in a sense, the story isn't relatively similar to Otonari no Tenshi but only because people are just using Otonari no Tenshi as standard romcom novel to compare to most romcom novel nowadays which is rather dumb when Otonari no Tenshi is yet also based off another novel in Syosetu that isn't translated. The story isn't exactly fast-paced but abit slow-pace so if you're planning to read a fast pace then you should skip this since this is relatively more toward slow-mid pace story with actual character development. <<less

Their progression is natural and the way they get familiar with each other is the slow romance feel. Felt a little forced on how they got to meet each other but it wasn't bothersome. Still felt natural like a person putting in effort for the person they like. I like stories where one party of the relationship put in effort for the other. Very wholesome.

So, the start of this is really great in my opinion.

Fairly good pacing, and the MC isn't too bad. FMC is great, in fact one of my favorite types, especially how she is written.

The reason for the 3* is because there is a lot of vital information completely skipped or glossed over in this. I do not know if that is the translator's fault, or if it is the author's, or even if it is written that way intentionally. Either way, that is a major negative for me.

I would have... more>> loved to give this a 4.5* but it is simply impossible to do so with that glaring issue. <<less

Eh, it's pretty good. Honestly the start was much better, I'd have given it a 5* for the fluff and characters. I also appreciate his friend (really reminds me of the bro from 'My Love Story' - aka a true bishonen who sticks by the MC because he's actually good at reading people, and appreciates the MC for who he is). The FMC's family is also great.

That being said, the author clearly felt the urge to make stuff up, and needed to develop his characters. So the FMC starts becoming... more>> a yandere with no self-control, which is vaguely annoying. She's almost turning into a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, which is completely against her starting character. It's fortunately mitigated by the fact that there are no other love rivals (no harem, love triangle, etc), so it's not as bad as it could be. She's just a hyper-dere.

Where it really begins to falter though is with the MC. He goes from having a loner lifestyle who enjoys the transactional nature of working for a paycheck... to being a formerly abused child who is unable to love or be loved. It's... really annoying. As someone who IS an actual loner, and prefers it that way (without being lonely in the slightest) it really annoys me when people write fiction who equate being an introvert to being psychologically damaged and a result of physical and mental abuse as a child.

Fine, whatever, that's a pet peeve, I can get by that if it's used to help the characterization. Too bad it's really not. It's just a super ham-fisted way of allowing the MC to experience character growth. It's like intentionally writing a pure scum, sub-human character, just so that you can write him to be a normal person, and then brag 'wow look at all the intense character development my MC went through!'.

To be fair, I still think the story is pretty decent, but it went from 'damn, this is really good, 5*s for you!' to 'ughh, I'm having trouble reading this'. If the start was mediocre, i'd just have dropped the story, given it a sh*t rating and moved on. It's just in contrast to the start, everything recently has been way over the top. Beginning was a 5*, but the latter bit is 3 star, maybe even 2.5.

It doesn't help that the author likes to write random future side-stories, which are in essence pure fluff in the future after all the problems (that he just made up and added) are now solved. That's actually BAD, because it just really shows off how ham-fisted the 'emotional problems' are. If you want to write fluff, then write fluff. You're actually decent at it. Too bad the artificial problems limit the actual work though. Sometimes having contrast can help, but here it doesn't at all. <<less
