Mm, good read indeed.

This story had a lot of ups and downs but I'm glad I stuck with it. My heart can't take anymore though.

Even though it started slow, it ended with a bang. I hope you give this novel a chance I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

P.S. (╥﹏╥) Wuwuwu I loved the author's note so much I'm gonna miss it

One word: Amazing.

This novel is too good, the MC is so beautifully written, her story and her character development just ahhh too good!!

However I was def not a big fan of the princess/our fl, my MC deserved a 100 times better sigh but what can we do, good ppl often have wack taste.

I really enjoyed this! For me it was quite well-balanced. All the characters felt very real and well-rounded and their actions made sense given what they were going through. Did you want to shake them sometimes? Of course, but that's the same with basically every novel. The length of this also felt right, given the plot.

If you're looking for an f/f novel where the main couple are together most of the book, it would be silly to look for that in a book where one character is a general on... more>> the frontier and the other is a princess. If they were mostly in the same place that would be extremely implausible.

Most of the criticisms I've seen, and the the author talked about in her notes, kind of baffled me. For me it was a great read. <<less

Indeed, this story had a lousy ending. JFC if the ending was going to be like that, instead of being a GE it should have been a BE just so I could wallow in my depression instead of hating myself for pushing myself for hours to such an anticlimactic end.

I'm just kidding kekw

Haha...

Personally, I'd give this story a 4*. Holy sh*t did everything feel like filler. I mean, it was all important to the plot, but the politics and battles got so f*cking boring. It took me 10 hours to... more>> binge it all even skimming through at least half of it. It's really f*cking long, and not much of it is spicy romance and angst.

Overall, a good story. It tells the story of the rise of gay Mulan until retirement with the princess.

Objectively it's pretty boring in its entirety, but the author wanted to include a sh*t ton of battles and sweaty men, so I guess that was inevitable.

Well, if you compare it to all the melodramatic GL/BL webnovels I guess that'd be the case. The author just made it too realistic I guess.

5* because I wasted 10 hours of my life and my pride won't accept that it wasn't meaningful at all.

If you like ancient china stories and of course yuri I definitely recommend it. I’d definitely title it a slow burn but it is beautifully written and translated, a heart wrenching and lovely story. It really shines at the end and I definitely cried once or twice. Probably one of my new favorites and definitely top for the ancient China genre.

I must preface this criticism with praise: this story held me fixated. I read it in one weekend and two work days, and finishing it, gave myself less than four hours of sleep before returning to work. I offer this criticism, not because it expresses my whole feeling toward the work itself, but because I hope it may be of use to the author, whose work I look forward to enjoying. It is my feeling that the ending suffered from a desire of the author to express a theme that... more>> I feel is very worthy, and that I am much in sympathy with, a pro-people, anti-war, anti-feudal idea, but that the way in which the author wanted to express it, did not flow very naturally from the preceding events of the story. I hope these thoughts, of an amateur, are of some use to the worthy author. <<less

My rating is a 3.5 which I decided to round upwards. This novel has political intrigue, war, and slow burn. I've never read a novel about a character in the military before and this was a good first experience. The battles were well-written, it was easy to imagine the scenes from PDL's vivid descriptions. They were entertaining and weren't too drawn out, which was a worry as I get bored quickly reading long fight scenes.

As for the characters, there are several interesting side characters but they don't have much substance.... more>> We do get to learn more about them in the extras, but I wish they got to shine more in the actual story.
Spoiler

The Hun leader has so much potential. I want a novel just about her story.

I like the MC Lin Wanyue. It was enjoyable to read her journey in getting stronger, growing in power, and growing as a person. I had really mixed feelings about the FL Li Xian, I didn't understand some of her motivations. There was a point I was frustrated and felt like Lin Wanyue deserved to be with someone better. However, Li Xian's character grew enough that I could enjoy the romance. It's satisfying when the romance finally does happen.

Regarding the political intrigue, it was interesting to read Li Xian's underlying plots unfold, but it was confusing at times. I'm poor with names and there was too much going on for me to follow at points. There was a name I hadn't seen in 100+ chapters dropped, and I had to go back to the beginning to figure out who it even was. I highly recommend referencing the character list from the FGEP carrd (Google brings its up) as you read.

As for the ending, I thought it was okay. It felt rushed and I didn't understand the motives behind their choices at the end.
Spoiler

I didn't understand why Lin Wanyue chose to leave her daughter behind and rebuild her village instead. I thought it was weird that she'd fake her death and leave, but it does work out in the extras.

Overall, I liked this book. The war was honestly some of my favorite parts. I ended up liking the romance despite the doubts I had about the couple. Slow burn is my weakness... This was an enjoyable read overall. <<less

This is a really long and slowburn f/f romance. It is one of the few good Chinese f/f novels out there and I wish I loved it. I have to say that my taste is entirely subjective but I had such a hard time with this book.

The pace is really REALLY slow. The protagonist, Lin Wanyue's moment of change and growth only really happens right near the end. The two main leads barely interacted until about 3/4s into the book. And Li Xian does not know Lin Wanyue's identity until... more>> even later which is a personal pet peeve because I value authenticity and honesty in a romance very much. I also found it hard to connect to Li Xian. She doesn't seem to have her own motivations and instead lives to achieve goals for others. This book also has a lot of chapters about politics and the war which I struggled to get through.

The extras were really good though. I wish the author included them in the main story because there were some really interesting characters in the side stories, e.g. Luo Yi.

The best thing about this novel is really the representation of the two queer characters. Their feelings, thoughts and reactions when in love with a woman really reflect the lived experiences of queer women. They feel like real people when it comes to this, unlike many of the bl. Also, the portrayal of mental illness was really realistic (Lin Wanyue and PTSD/depression, Li Xian and anxiety). And the physical desire scenes were so well-written because they felt: a) realistic but sweet, b) consensual!!!! The way they desired/loved each other was so real and so wholesome. Finally, no more dub/non-con.

Overall, this was a pain to get through although I appreciate the representation of queer women very much. I really hope the next novel gets better. <<less

Such a rollercoaster ride. Highly recommended!

All characters are intelligent and sneaky. The character developments were also well done. It is also a very slowburn story but it is so damn worth it.

Loved the novel. It was very well written and you could see the plotline was very much set from the very beginning. There are some details here and there that might make you think it could've been done better, but they are all minor when compared to the whole work which was very well done. You can see that the author put her all into writing this, which makes it an even better read.

Not sure if this counts as a spoiler but anyways: ... more>>

personally I'm not a fan of having the main characters dying as the end, be it of old age or not. I like them having an open end with them still alive and happy. Don't get me wrong, the end and extras were done very well and I can objectively say that it was good, its just that it's not of my preference.

[collapse]

I don't normally go for slow burns but this was so well done, I just couldn't put it down so it still went by pretty fast for me.

The AUs were also fun to read and had interesting little tidbits that sometimes complemented the chapters and/or novel. <<less

It's pure 5/5.

Honestly the story has some hole here and there, sometimes not consistent and sometimes rush but they are overshadow by how good everything else is.

You know those times where you're heart is throbbing with full of anticipation, grief, sorrow, happiness and more? This novel nailed all of them. Foreshadowing has been placed well since the beginning.

... more>> Also our MC, her growth is so soooo satisfying! It's my first time getting this invested emotionally to characters, I can't stress out how well it's been done.

I'll definitely revisit this novel after some time! <<less

Ahhh... this story made me cry a lot of times. The story is very heavy, and there are plenty of drama. I don't usually like dramas because it'll only add burden to my mental health LOL. However, the author succeeded on grasping my attention until the end! I binge read this story for only two days HAHAHA the characters are well-thought. Their individual agendas are crystal clear. My only problem is the names of the characters. It took me a lot of time to recognize them lol

I read another's mention of political intrigue and that got me interested. And it delivered, because the political intrigue is not spelled out for you in an effort to make a character super intelligent like other stores, but leaves you wondering who, why and how for a long time. It also has a good martial part, the chapter were MC and 3 of her friends infiltrated the enemy got me at the edge of my seat.

So all in all, if you like martial and political intrigue stories,... more>> this one is for you. The fact that this is yuri is just a plus. Also there is quite a bit of angst from MC as FL due her intrigue can be quite a b*tch, however stories were MC falls first practically always have angst, so it is expected.

The only thing I disliked is the end as it seemed rushed and author forgot of all the other interesting characters they had developed through the story along MC and FL.

Spoiler

In a way it made me remember Hunger Games movie trilogy, all the good from the beginning and middle, for such a lackluster ending. It is a good happy ending, but it made sad thinking of how better it could have been if not that rushed for closure after the romance was "completed".
