Fake Slackers

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

After class placements were decided, the school’s two infamous ‘problem youths’ not only shared the same class, but the same desk.

They’re clearly good at studies, but pretend to be slackers. Fakers from head to toe who just keep walking farther down the path of their performance.

Heard through the grapevine about the two big brothers who always fight over the last place in class.

Basically, this is a serious comedy. About the little matters of growing up.

It kept me entertained; it's just a fluffy high school romance novel. At times it even caused nostalgia due to how similar some parts were to my actual high school experience.

I lost a bit of interest near the ending because it focused way more on the side characters and the class dynamic as a whole instead of the romance, but it didn't crash and burn at the end like a lot of Danmei so there's that.

After the MC and ML figure out that they're both fake slackers the romance basically... more>> stagnates and the plot just keeps wandering aimlessly, throwing unnecessary subplots at you (i.e. Random Basketball arc) that don't even have romance and instead aim to give more screentime to the rest of MC's classmates. Even the extras include the classmates butting in every time MC and ML are going to have a private moment together lol. <<less

It's been a while so I'm sorry if I somehow mix this up with something else. This is also biased because this was the first bl I read (as a novel) and the reason why I have dove into the rabbit hole.

The story was pretty fluffy and funny. Although it's been a while I still remember how MC and ML came to know each other's intelligence. It was a pretty memorable scene. ... more>>

Finished reading this in just two days and I liked it quite a lot.

A story about two boys who pretend to be dumb and compete with each to rank bottom despite being really intelligent. The characters were written extremely well. Their relationship development was quite nice to read, from strangers-to desk mates-to friends (?) -to lovers.

Talking about side characters, everybody were nice. Like class 3 students who were first afraid of MCs but later become close friends, and my absolute fav Old Tang. Everybody needs a teacher like old Tang... more>> in their life. Such a selfless and kind teacher who never gives up on any students despite how hopeless they seem. And lastly the black water street. I really loved their familial bond.

Overall a nice story but there were few chapters that was just boring so I had to skim through it. All in all a must read story if you love romcoms with mc's who have equal footing and no angst.

3.5, I read this because people kept recommending it to me, but I think I'm just too old for this novel. It is a high school slice of life romance that was trying to be deep, but was actually superficial. I guess I'm a cynic, but the idea that a hormone infused first love will last forever seems too far fetched to me. Also all the high school slice of life wasn't for me. The basketball competition and the dance part, I found boring and skipped a lot.

I almost dropped... more>> it at chapter 28 as the first 50 chapters were hard for me to get through, but after chapter 50 the story picks up. The fake slacker aspect is carried on until around chapter 100, kind of drawn out, but not too bad. I will say the author ended the story at a good time, right when I was starting to get really bored. The last extra is a must.

The MC was not my favorite, typical rebellious, angry teen. His "tragic" backstory was too weak to justify his attitude and how he treated others. Honestly if the MC hadn't been such an angsty teenager, he got a different backstory, or lived in a different situation, I would have liked this novel more. The ML was a bit too shameless, but I really liked him. His tragic backstory made more sense to me of why he pretended to be a slacker. Their romance was cute and the MC wasn't always a cold jerk, you can tell that he really loves the ML.

The real gem was class 3 and the teachers. I think they were some of the more interesting side characters I've read in a long time and I appreciate that they didn't do a class bullying or teacher bully route (I know the original teacher kind of was, but she didn't stay around long)

All in all it was written okay, most of the characters were interesting, but it's just not for me. I can see however, how others would really love this novel.

I tried reading the manhua first, but is on hiatus, manga/manhua high school stories are usually okay for me so tried there first. <<less

Am always like this! Whenever a novel is praised to the heavens and back am usually apprehensive about it. I've had this in my reading list for almost a year and finally out of having nothing else to read I decided to give it a try. Yes it did start off kinda slow for me but man oh man! What-a-story! A love story with literally no fights-I mean the literal fist fights were there, in plenty at that, but am talking about misunderstandings, s*upid jealousy etc etc like these guys'... more>> story was just so smooth but funny enough it never felt unreal, not for them! BEAUTIFUL love story, don't wait a year like I did, you are missing out!

The novel is light-hearted and hilarious, filled with chaotic youth energy and innocent love. It has a rather slow pace but if you enjoy slice of life, it shouldn’t be a problem.

(Most) characters were likeable and I love the classmates so much since some of them reminded of my friends as well. The dynamic between MC and ML was fun as they relentless competed to see who was the worse delinquent (but it didn’t go pass the moral line since they just pretended to be lazy and bad at... more>> studying, not went around bullying people or some shits), and as the time went by, they started to feel affection towards each other, caring for one another. The MC and ML also struggled in their own way, having to deal with their personal issues and learn how to overcome them. It feels so natural and it warms my heart.

Highly recommended. <<less

I love this novel. This is a highschool dormitory and slice of life novel where Xie Yu and He Zhao are seen as tyrants of the school but are actually just undercover smartasses for their own reasons.

Xie Yu is the kid in class that's seen as quiet and scary so no one dares to even breathe too loud and He Zhao is the energetic kid that would hype people up. Both of their reputations are as a tyrant of the school, the ones that beat people up.

Throughout the novel the... more>> class gradually warms up to the both of them and they aren't seen as tyrants anymore, although it may not be the same for the rest of the school.

The side characters were amazing and added a lot of chaos and humour, although there might be one or two misunderstandings. I've honestly read this novel so many times and the manhua adaption is also amazing, the art is really great. I recommend you read it too. <<less

Another one to add to my favorites list. Can't believe I waited so long before taking this off from its permanent spot on my to read list.

This story was so adorable. I appreciate that the MC was so strong and remains strong throughout, even in the relationship. Both of my boys are the cutest, and there's so much dog food before they even actually get together. I love that the MC takes no shits and says everything directly, going right for it when he realizes that he likes the ML.... more>> He's also so sly and teases the ML and is quite forward, which I appreciate. The part where they're both hiding their OP brains lasts a bit but ends right before I get annoyed by them going in circles around each other.

Love it. I've been finding so many sweet BLs lately, this must be heaven. <<less

It's nice. The novel is about campus love filled with education, teaching, unity/camaraderie, and a hint of comedy.

The novel really started off with a dark tone, showing Xie Yu's (the protagonist) circumstance.

The author didn't deliberately made their reason (of being bottom in class) a mystery/secret for long, instead she let the readers pierce it together while reading the first few chapters.

... more>> Its actually a nice feeling, because most authors only reveal the mystery at the end of the novel.

After some chapters, the novel's tone lightened a lot. With the biggest contributor, the male lead; He Zhao. He's really shameless, and really funny. I just can't with him.

The other characters also added life to the novel, especially Old Tang (their teacher), Mad Dog (their Dean), and the Class 3.

Class 3 is the standard. I'm hoping I'm gonna have classmates and teachers like them.

Now that I've finished the novel, I'm off to read the manhua! Bye~

(If you still want more of Fake Slackers, read the manhua. The title is still the same, you can also read it in Bilibili.)

Spoiler

I'm quite happy with what He Zhao did at the extra, where he took revenge on Zhong Jie (stepbrother) for Xie Yu's sake.

Because when the novel ended, I'm like; what happened to the Zhong family? What's their reaction to Xie Yu being the champion? Especially that, hmp.

Reading the extras appeased me.

When a person graduates from highschool, they can’t help but look back and have a sense of deja vu whenever they do something similar when they're older. And then, they'd realise that they're still a pure child at heart, still themselves at the very end.

Fake slackers is an amazing, emotion invoking and simply beautiful novel. The author has a way of writing colourful characters that seem to perfectly jump straight out of one's adolescence and, paired with various relatable scenarios, the author paints an expressive highschool experience. At the very... more>> least, it was a story that was very, very touching and similarly, very tear-jerking to me.

I personally love MCs like Xie Yu, a seemingly cold but just awkwardly kind-hearted boy and MLs like He Zhao, a seemingly brave and suave yet soft-hearted person.

This novel conveys its message perfectly: enjoying your youth's happiness and sadness, laughs and cries, embarrassments and frustrations, longings and amazement at how it just shamelessly breezes past. Time always runs, but our memories will wait for us to catch them every once in a while, all we need to do is look back.

If I had to pick a phrase to describe this novel, it’d be: Youth’s beauty.

Truthfully, I couldn't bear to read the 3 extra chapters simply because I didn't want this journey to end, but I prevailed and I'm happy I did. After all, I got a few more laughs and tears at midnight like a highly emotional teen. Only to abruptly realise, yes the novel has ended, but for Xie Yu and He Zhao, their life's journey has just kicked-off.

I'll miss these characters, definitely will re-read in the future! <<less

The novel itself 3/5.

The plot line is almost non-existent. I understand the focus is on school and for a slice of life novel there's not much room for intriguing elements like magic or monsters and the like, but I was hoping was a solid background for the characters, for very interesting, dramatic reasons of why they are the way they are. But it wasn't the case for this novel. Which is unfortunate, because I sense a lot potential in the author's barebone characterization and worldbuilding.

The translation 2/5. Some notes refer... more>> to things that can be inferred while many, many things are not translated properly, some are left in pinyin and not explained, which used to be a big no-no in Chinese novel translations 5-ish years ago but now it's become a terrible plague. And some things are translated but because they're not explained properly, they fall falt. In other words, when monikers or expressions later become puns or jokes between the characters, the meaning is lost because they were not handled great before.

Ethics 1/5. When I read somewhere that this translation is pay-walled I thought it was like suika & Co that have a form when you need to attach receipts of JJWXC chapters you purchased. But this is a translation that requires payment, like a license. But it's not licensed, because otherwise it would have an ISBN like every other novel in existence. If there's no license all the money is going to the translator and not to the author. And that's just... Let's just say that He Zhao is not the only shameless person around here. <<less

One of the best danmei ive read so far. I started reading it due to content creators that post danmei and when I saw it had a manhua, I read it the manhua. The manhua interested me so I naturally went to go read the novel and oh boy was it amazing. I love the main characters and how funny they are. I like how the side characters are part of the novel and not just appear once in awhile, they weren't there 99% of the time but were there... more>> enough for me to love them. Even if people think its repetitive to some people, it's still an amazing read and you will love it. Its cute and hilarious, I dont have high expectations for novels when I read stuff so my enjoyment is what matters and this is one where it will just be a fun.

P.S. I didnt read it on Chaleuria since you had to pay to read, so I went from website to website looking for the translation :) <<less

This was so good!! I especially like the fact that there were no misunderstandings in their relationship (if you don't them misunderstanding the others iq 🤣).

I also like the side characters, they're funny and interesting. And the fact that their whole class still stayed in contact with each other like; my class could Never 🙄 😂 but other than that this is definitely a must read!!!

I'm not stingy when I give a review but my standards are not low either.

At first, I'm barely giving this a 4 ⭐ because I've seen the manhua it's really pretty so I became highly interested with the novel, but I felt great amount of boredom while reading this because of the repetitive plot... They'd have class, fool around, exam, class, fool around.... so on.

However, there were parts that really made it worthy to read... like the reactions of their classmates and teachers when they found out about them being... more>> fake slackers. And also some relatable situation with their parents...

What really made me give this a slightly higher rating of 4.5 ⭐ is the extra chapters... I was not satisfied with the ending, it felt weak, but reading the extra chapters intensified my good feelings for the novel, I actually cried because of it lol. <<less

When I finished this, I was like "Ah, no wonder this was so popular." It's slow burn, sometimes it gets too dragged and I had to stop lest I get too bored. Teens would gobble this up hahaha since they could relate well. I felt nostalgia reading this, when my worries were only about my grades and when there were exciting school events.

It's quite realistic too-- nobody got kidnapped, got drugged, almost got r*ped, got into a car accident, etc. Etc.-- it's just what you expect from an ordinary high... more>> school life. There were some loose ends like

what the Zhong Young master's reaction towards Xie Yu's new grades and how their dysfunctional family eventually turned out, what University they got into and what professions they chose in the end, did their class and everyone they care for manage to know about their relationship or if they eventually came out to them;

I love this novel!!! This is just a simple story but has an impact especially for me who always slacks off. I really should strive studying like the characters while also enjoying life. Although I wish I'm like the main characters that has an IQ so high! feeling envy

The characters are the ones that I really like in this story. The MC is a tsundere but there's really this sweet soft spot in his heart for his family and friends, and of course for our wonderful ML. His little gestures... more>> swells up my heart. His concerns are discreet but it's so sweet.

ML is also very amusing and entertaining. His characteristics really made me love him. He's very funny like reaaally. He also loves MC so much it makes me jealous. Plus he's a very good actor haha. Oh so suave~

Not only the main characters but also the side characters deserves a praise.

The people in Black Water Street gains a salute and thumbs up from me. They are not blood-related family of XY but treats him very nicely. They are also funny hehe. I won't forget about Madam Gu and Old He of course, but I don't have much impressions on them.

The class 2.3 is really something. They are always together through thick and thin. Also Old Tang of course! He's a teacher you really would end up loving. A doting teacher that has a genuine care for his students. Dean Jiang and Wu Zheng too!

Spoiler

I don't really know if I should curse or praise class 2.4 though

[collapse]

I love each and every chapter but the Extra 4 is really my favorite (✯ᴗ✯) I love the scenes there, For those who haven't read the Extra 4 yet, just search, you'll find it. It's free.

It's a 5/5 for me. This has all the things I'm looking for in a slice of life novel. This is a light story with humor, romance, a little bit of drama, and also encouraging words.

And dog food for someone like me :"> <<less

A story of two boys who for various reasons have much more in common than either could predict.

Spoiler

Geniuses who hide their abilities. Next door neighbors. Deskmates. Fighting fiends. Eventual lovers. Their coming of age story is paced slowly by intent. As you watch their day to day hijinks in life and at school the author gives glimpses into their motivations for hiding so much from those around them. Especially their friends and family. Mc's moms reaction when she found out the truth was both shorter than I expected and also so perfectly done it encapsulated everything I loved about their relationship. ML and his dad are a trip.

[collapse]

At heart its a school comedy with really strong characterization and surprising depth. The pacing felt odd because I wanted answers to questions faster than we got them but it was actually perfect for showing how the boys bonded and eventually let go of their fears enough to move forward. There were no true villains; however, the author did a fantastic job showing how people can so easily hurt each other when they make assumptions or only consider their own interests. It also made me laugh out loud more than once with the killer one liners. A chill, sweet, funny and poignant story of two boys falling in love and growing up. Whats not to like? <<less

Amazing

This high school romance gives great feel-good vibes.

I read it a long time ago though I could not complete it because of paid chapters but I remember that, however much I have read, it was good.
It feels different from other high school novels I have read even though I can't pinpoint what exactly it is which makes it unique.
It's beautifully written.

Totally recommended.
