Don't the generic title, setting and art fool you, this isn't pointless fluff. The food featured is usually served as a side dish for the political intrigue.

Spoiler

The Princess' unique status made her a frequent target for assassination ever since she was born, her death capable of creating a civil war.

[collapse]

As for the romance, it's sweet.

Spoiler

The Princess' official first meeting with her husband has her cowering from his billion watt smile.

"Are you listening?"

"... Please don't be angry"

"I'm not angry"

"I can hear the anger from your voice"

"You're making me angry"

"But you just said you weren't!"

But once they clear out the air enough to have a decent conversation, they get along just fine. Enough to make the Prince's brothers ecstatic.

"The sweets are wasted on Elder Brother"

So far it balances everything out nicely. I hope a translator group picks this up since the author likes to put details in their world building. It'll be a headache for an amateur translator, much less an MTL one. <<less

I'm conflicted about how to write this review - my main conclusion is that it was unsatisfying for me as a novel, but I did read it to the end.

The first half of this story only gets 3 stars - the mystery kept me reading, but the way it was written was really not my cup of tea. Maybe it's the way J-novels are written, but there is a ton of introspection that leads absolutely nowhere and doesn't add much to the plot, just makes me frustrated with the FL.... more>> It's also a LOT of dry exposition about past events and genealogy in very long boring conversations. I mean, I appreciate world building, but there must be a more interesting way to do it. I also did not find a satisfactory resolution to all the horrible things that poor Alterie had to go through as a child. The way the FL moves on from the past is just so dismissive. While the relationship between the CP is very sweet and I have no doubt of their love, there is very little romance in this novel, their relationship takes a backstage (I mean she stays in the body of a 11-13 year old girl the whole time, so what could happen?) The food also comes in and out of the story, but really isn't that prominent either. So if you are reading for romance and food p*rn, you probably should forget this novel.

The 2nd half of the novel is a bit better in terms of plot pace and brings the rating up to 3.5 (rounded to 4), perhaps because the necessary exposition happens in the 1st half. But the ultimate mystery behind her identity doesn't get much resolution in the 2nd half either.

2nd half major spoiler:

I think her transmigration had something to do with her being the 'key princess' and that one of the doors she could open in the strange palace bas**ent might lead back to modern Japan or something, but that never happened? It's never made clear what the magic of the key princess is actually worth (other than being protected by the crown as the last descendant of the Unification Empire) So that was pretty frustrating for me. What was the point? She also doesn't really bring any major innovation to the world being a modern person, other than a few new recipes for sweets.

TLDR: My desk has a new dent shaped like my head thanks to this novel 2 stars

I love a story with a touch of the strange or weird but this just made ZERO sense at all. It's greatest virtue was that it was short. The only thing that explains the characters is that inbreeding amongst the nobility has produced cong**ital idiocy. The main character is supposedly an adult from Japan?? Are their women all infantile ? I mean she's every bit as dim as the rest of the cast and... more>> acts very childish on top of that.

Bottom line: For a relaxing read look elsewhere. <<less

I couldn't even get close to a fourth of the story. She's supposedly 33, but she's, well, kind of dumb. She thinks that Alterie's accident was an attempted assassination, but she goes and wanders around the castle by herself and gets lost anyway. It's smoothed over and summarized by the narrator, like it wasn't a big deal. It just made me cringe. Might pick up again because it seems interesting, but the info dump in the first few chapters was just nuts. It was even the unnecessary kind of info... more>> dump. <<less

So good parts first. I went into this story legit worried about the 15 year age gap but the author was very tasteful in how they handled it and it actually turned out to be very cute. They were very aware in the story about the gap and implications of her being 12 so I was pleasantly surprised. Also this story deals with a lot of politics and mind games but I think the overall ideas are good and interesting enough that it kept my attention through the whole thing.... more>> The translation also hovered somewhere between OK and Good (which honestly bumps up my ratings already cause I've read some real terrible translations before). I also liked the MC and ML. I don't have much to say about them but they were easy to connect to and not annoying in the least imo.

With that said, the first thing I want to mention is this story is really bad about info dumping. I really did not think I was going to make it through the first 7ish chapters because it was nothing but info dumping. The author is really bad about adding a lot of details especially details that don't really add much to the overarching story. It's like they had done a lot of world building in their head and were unable to add it into the story naturally. The author also opens a lot of potential story threads but never goes anywhere with it. I was very unsatisfied with the ending and I felt like the story was building up to something big but never went anywhere. Things that you think might be important turn out to not be which became very frustrating in the second part.

Overall I would say that this is not the best novel but I would also rate it above average novel in this genre. I don't regret reading it and I think if more of this story were to come out I would come back to it. <<less

I personally really enjoyed this novel. The place were I read it got taken down but I ended up reading the first book. I think it was very interesting, compared to the manga adaptation it's more detailed. The plot and translation was amazing. Super interesting and definitely recommend if your into (historical, romance, mystery)

This is so hard to read. Explanation might be good for world building, but in this novel it's just too many detail, so many explanation.

I'm not sure if it's the problem of the original work or translation, the story telling is also ambiguous, that I often confused with whom the story refer to.

Spoiler

Not to mention when explaining the inbreeding, my goodness, it's so messed up.
