My standards regarding to what I read are not consistent. If I liked and enjoyed the work, then I'd rate it 5 stars. And this novel is a 5/5 FOR ME. I mean it did what it have to do-- entertain me.

Spoiler

Surprisingly I don't hate Chi Yi (ML) that much. He was a scumbag but hats off for him trying to make up for it through extreme means.

One thing that made me happy about this is that the scumbag is the one that perished. Although MC died, it was in another reality and that doesn't count (for me).

The open ending for the extra also made me happy because you can interpret it as them starting anew by being together; a glimpse of what could have been.

There are some triggering content in this story so people beware! The translator stated the tw before the actual thing happens so I guess you can still back out if you can't stomach it.

mu*der, Dub-con (s*xual Assault) and etc. I forgot the other trigger tags.

[collapse]

As I've stated I'm easily entertained so take this review with a grain of salt. If you can't stomach cheating, s/a and dog blood in general, please don't read! Save yourself the trouble and the waste of time. <<less

For mature readers only. This novel delves into some pretty dark themes that are not suitable for the faint of heart, so be warned. It starts off as a husband-chasing crematorium with the scum shou returning to China after having played around in his wanton ways. The MC, Xu Yue, came home to the ML, Chu Yi, sitting on his sofa and sipping tea leisurely as if he wasn't the one who had cheated on the MC in the past. His responses and demeanor came off very blasé when the... more>> MC asked about his previous flirty conquests, and why he came back. Chu Yi responded sweetly using what Xu Yue felt were honeyed words, and though he tried to tighten his heart, his body still gave in to the ML's flirty advances. The ML then forces his way back into the MC's life, and this is where the novel takes a turn and darker themes are explored.

The MC noticed that the ML has changed a lot since they broke up 6-7 years ago, and his aura appears almost wicked. The way he relentlessly pursued the MC and the stalkerish, obsessive and controlling methods he used to keep him by his side were major changes to his character from the frivolous and carefree person he used to be. The MC surmised a lot must have happened that caused the ML to change, and he eventually decides to let the ML slowly back in his life, only for the novel to turn much much darker.

Cue content warnings: chains, physical assault, mentions of mu*der, and some other disturbing content that I won't post as they'll spoil the novel. I went in blind as I do not like to read content warnings, and was pleasantly mind-blown by the revelations as the dots started connecting one by one. The ML's actions in the beginning later made a lot of sense as the plot unraveled. This is a thrilling novel, and I still have goosebumps long after finishing it. Try not to spoil it and go in blind, you'll be amazed by what Kun Yi Wei Lou cooked up in this novel. <<less

wife chasing or husband chasing crematorium stories are tolerable when it's simply neglect as a partner from the scumbag's side or dumping the MC because they don't cherish them. Yet, I still personally feel that the scumbag needs to face retribution of sorts like in the obsessive shou moves on, unless they truly were just dense or still inexperienced as a partner. I really draw the line at cheating because you wouldn't cheat on someone you truly loved.

as much as the artistry in the author's words are present, they still... more>> failed to make this novel meaningful. There is no character development of sorts, no forward trajectory in any part of the story. I felt like I was reading something that simply continues sinking down in an endless journey. There is no beginning, no end, all you know is you've found yourself in a sinking ship.

love is never a reason or justification for anything and the author despite delving into mature themes and attempting to make a show of love conquers all, fails to show a love deserving of that, or any real love, for that matter.

the mc

Spoiler

he needs help. I am annoyed by his s*upidity but i've been in his position before. Love is blind. No matter how much you feel disrespected, you won't always leave immediately even if that's your first thought. My only gripe is that he never set own boundaries to protect himself. He's like a person simply floating, he's listless and doesn't react to anything. He's passive as a plastic bag. He's clearly not in the right state of mind and most likely depressed but the ML took advantage of that.

[collapse]

the ml

Spoiler

he does not love the MC, and we see that through his characterization. Hear me out, his own words are not enough to prove his love when his entire existence, his actions, and his intentions completely go against genuine love. He is born to a rich family and has never once felt that anybody besides him is the center of the universe. He doesn't know love because he grew up without it, in a family that had none of it. He seeks novelty and the thrill of a different relationship, wrong. He realizes he isn't actually seeking all of that, but the love that he lacked from childhood. Finally, he discovers it in the form of his ex-boyfriend whom he had cheated on. His ex who saved him from death. His ex whom after snooping through his belongings, he discovered actually loves him. His ex whom because of his love for him, he shouldn't have bothered anymore. If you truly love someone, the least you could do is accept that you are no longer together and that he has passed away. Someone who truly loves another person will not go through the extents that chu yi did. Chu yi is obsessed and wracked with guilt. He still hasn't snapped out of whatever trance he's in, fully believing he should make up for something that can't be changed. But perhaps, that was the point of this story.

[collapse]

no matter what chu yi does, he will always just be xu yue's ex-boyfriend. His love will never be genuine until he has resolved his issues because he would only be seeking love, not xu yue's love, all while xu yue only wants chu yi's love. Xu yue just happens to be the one person who has expressed love for chu yi. I'm sure if there were someone else out there or someone before xu yue, this all would've happened to that person instead.

there's really more I want to say but they all boil down to mere frustration and not seeing the point of all this. A tragedy is only well-written when it has development and is later crushed. This had none of it so it's not special.

i really have to laugh at other readers though. Don't play into chu yi's trap or when you get cheated on, your life will be a mess before you know it. Do you want to experience getting cheated on to understand why it's not "just one mistake"? I feel like maybe you should have it happen to you at least once so you won't be s*upid enough to tell someone to forgive someone who cheated on him. Maybe focus less on your obsession with having all men together for your yAOIs XD and read more for the sake of reading. It's disrespectful to not even bother to think about the story beyond "boy x boy hehe <3"

despite the open ending implying the MC and ML may have a better relationship in the end, I feel this is a tragedy not because of the death of PL MC but because of the fact that these two will forever be entangled with each other even if they continue to harm each other. Their relationship is not healthy, never will be, and they both don't give a f*ck. Isn't that quite tragic in reality? <<less

Meh - not awful, but not good either. Might be the translation, since the translator claims that the author uses a lot of phrases and idioms that doesn't translate well to English (which, granted, is always a problem with translation from Chinese because there's so much context that you can't translate). But then again, unless a translation is really bad (and the translator here seems to have made quite an effort - tons of explanatory footnotes), then usually even with a fan TL, part of the problem lies in the... more>> original text. And here are several issues - first of all, the prose is really dry, so it's hard to get engaged in the characters and story.

The characters don't come off as people, but more like puppets being moved around by the author - I generally like minimalist prose, but here we get so little information about the characters, the author doesn't dive into their background story except for a tiny bit in the beginning, so the MC's supposed love for the ML and change of heart after the starts pursuing him to win him back doesn't seem believable. The author lacks the skill to portray the MC's inner workings and show why he falls for the scum shou who cheated on him years ago.

The premise and plot twist is fairly interesting, and so is the premise for the ML's character - I personally love dark, twisted shous, but because of the dry writing style, he doesn't have much personality, so I wasn't able to feel anything for him or for the MC. There's also a SML who's just kind of there, but doesn't do much. Some authors are great at writing stories where not much happens, or writing plot twist that just hits you right in the chest, but this story isn't one of them. Then again, it could be a translation issue, but it's not the translators fault that the writing is mediocre at best.

The genre is 'husband chasing in the crematorium', as opposed to the 'wife chasing in the crematorium' where the gong is the scum, this is a story with a scum shou. Only the shou ML isn't really all that scummy towards the MC - all he did was cheat and sleep with someone else back when they were together. Which is of course unacceptable if you're in a relationship, but considering how scummy the MLs in this genre normally is, just cheating once is incredibly mild, so anyone who freaks out about the ML being 'scum' should not read any other crematorium novels. I removed the 'rape' tag because there's no r*pe in this novel - at best, you can say there is a dubcon scene, but not noncon. Generally I would say this is a pretty mild novel and I don't get all the warnings by the translator - also it might just be me, but the translator constantly putting out warnings about STDs because the CP doesn't practice safe s*x comes off as really preachy - this is fiction and the ML generally makes some really, really questionable choices, like

Spoiler

ruining the MC's date and later chaining him to the bed, not to mention the fact that he commits mu*der

[collapse]

so I would assume that readers in general can figure out that no, the MLs choices shouldn't be copied IRL, and unsafe s*x is generally a bad idea if you have or have had multiple s*xual partners - this is a work of fiction, not SexEd. I respect that the fan translator can do whatever he or she wants on their own blog, but I honestly felt talked down to - a mere warning about mature content and asking people who are under 18 not to read would be enough.

This didn't influence my rating of the novel itself, since this isn't the author's fault, but it got pretty annoying to have that shoved in my face while reading.

I read this because I got it recommended and generally like the 'crematorium' genre and obsessive shous, and it was a fast and easy read, but if you want interesting, morally grey shous I would recommend Outside the Law and Wan Wu Sang Zhi instead. For crematorium novels that are actually fun to read, truly dark and have interesting characters, try Professional Body Double or other novels by Shui Qian Cheng. This one was pretty forgettable, which is a shame, because the plot idea wasn't bad. <<less

Beautifully translated, though I'm giving it a higher rating than the story probably deserves because I loved the other story by this author so much.

The ML in this story is pretty scummy, and selfish to the end, even after he falls in love. I like the alternative presented in the extra.

The twist at the end was pretty enjoyable, but I think it forced the MC to reciprocate emotions he didn't really have the time to assess and confirm. But the story is all about love that stems from guilt-inducing debt.... more>> It doesn't seem like a great model for love at all. <<less

I was looking for a short novel to read and found Ex-boyfriend in my to-be-read list. It was so short, I was able to finish reading it in less than a day.

Unfortunately, I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. The story started well at first. The initial plot of chasing after an ex-boyfriend was intriguing to me. The way the scum shou wooed the ML, even until the story turned dark were still able to got me hooked. The sudden plot twist that came after turned... more>> me off. It was just too abrupt, even with the foreshadowing. As if the author forced to insert the plot twist just to make it into a BE novel.

Ps. ‘Fantasy’ should also be tagged. <<less

2.5 stars.

If this story was any longer, I wouldn't have wanted to finish it.

The premise was okay. The thing that kept me reading was the ML's motives. When that plot point was revealed, though, I was pretty disappointed.

Spoiler

I don't mind that the ML motives stem from grief and obsession. The fact he time traveled (?) in order to prevent the MC from dying was... a choice.

[collapse]

Additionally, the relationship between the MC and ML wasn't compelling. It doesn't help that the characters in this story weren't fleshed out enough.

As far as the ending's concerned...

Spoiler

It's an open ending. I would've rather the author have the MC die than this. Also, the extras do not really add much of anything, at least in my opinion.
