I went ahead and MTLed, the story was dark as expected.

So there are 3 main characters the guard, the enuech and the prince. The guard our MC is in love with the prince who consumes poison for 2 or 3 years idk the mtl kept changing. MC is basically half dead and very weak when he is sold the enuech (ML) for the prince's freedom . The prince's concubine mother did some scam so the prince is kept in captivity. The good

I like the fact that the author did not hesitate to show the realities of being an enuech. So many palace novels tend to gloss over the ugly realities of the whole palace system.

Like the fact that the maids and servants had to kneel in snow for such a long time and get whipped until their skin turned out.

I also like the fact that both MC and the ML have both been affected by this horrendous system that their personality is shaped adapting this. Even the king is not spared.

All characters are morally gray in some aspects.

The MC and ML are sort of a cut out characters but the whole palace system added to their uniqueness. The ML especially I like the fact that they both accept that they will have s*x life without his dick

The bad

The bd*m aspect. Power play done wrong. Why would you expect your readers to feel h**ny when the MC is worried over the fact that he will either get r*ped or he has to hold in his piss because he is imprisoned. The MC over the entire novel was worried and so worked up over his words and actions that I felt so bad for him.

After raping him for over half a month or a month (again the Mtl kept changing) , I felt the whole situation was bad.

But again as said by the MC, " I have never felt someone has ever loved me, and even the one I loved betrayed me, so the ML will have a special place in my heart "

Since it is set in ancient times and is a little bit realistic, I feel the ending is ok, even though the MC deserves way better.

So far I've only read one chapter but I'll update my review as more are translated.

So far it's just smut with the backstory that's already given in the description. It's very well written and beautifully translated. The writing is descriptive without being verbose.

I started this because I wanted a short, easy break between the arcs of a long novel I'm reading. And this has the smut label, how intense could it be? Oh boy, this was not short or easy. The translation is superb, so reading it was easy. But the situations and flash backs were not easy to read. It's certainly not a smut-forward story - there's a plot, a mystery, and lots of character development. One second I'm reading the novel and a day later I realized I just binged a bunch of videos on ink making and wood carving and was in the process of pricing out how expensive it would be to add some hand carved panels to my home decor (answer: quite expensive).

And while the Mc's caution does annoy me, it makes a lot of sense as well. He's essentially been brainwashed to be the perfect servant. Like a cult member, but even more extreme because there's no one other than the ML to help him realize he can be more.

Overall, despite the flags, this is a really sweet story, with some minor plot points and court struggles in the background. I absolutely loved the second extra, it helped round out the story with some familial affection for the lovely couple.

Also, I appreciate that the translator cites all the pictures used. In the age of ai being trained on (stealing) everything and claiming results as it's own, it's nice to see someone acknowledging the original creator. The translator was just great in general, even translating the author notes which help provide some levity in the darker parts of the story. Congrats author on finishing college and upcoming masters in Zurich! <<less

I love this story. I feel like it is unique.

I am thankful to the translator for the translation and explanation of the terms very clearly. I hope it will not be dropped.

This is a novel that's serious smut. I can't believe I will say this one day, but it's really a serious smut. It's not just smut, but it has a plot. Thought the plot itself is not too hard to understand, but at least it's not just shameless smut.

The story is very simple actually. It's all about romance, with the palace struggle behind the scene. Our main character, Ke Jingyin, is the secret guardsmen of the Eight Prince before he's being "given" to one of the... more>> powerful eunuch in the palace, Jiuqiansui, or Li Qin, which is our male lead. It's part of the Eight Prince strategy to get the support of the eunuch in order to take part in the palace struggle, so it's there as the baseline but not the entire story itself.

Many people might not want to continue reading after the first few chapters, which is arguably quite hard to stomach. The novel is from the POV of Ke Jingyin, so we felt his fear of Li Qin, and how he "thought" that he is in love with the Eight Prince. That's why I think it's hard for people who might not like ab*se to like this novel as well, since Ke Jingyin is like unreliable narrator throughout the story. There's a part where Li Qin was so jealous and punish Ke Jingyin, but that only last for about 4-5 chapters in total, so it's not really that bad.

It's still a decent story despite what people might say about it. Because it's dark, it didn't shy away from its nature. Though the story of the palace struggle is too fast for my liking, but I can understand that it's not the point of the story itself, as the main plot is about the budding relationship between Ke Jingyin and Li Qin. I also take the point off about the childhood sweetheart, which also appears in this story. Other than that, the story is actually quite decent. <<less

A hidden jem! The author's writing is poignant and the translation is very very excellent (as someone into history and linguistics, I love detailed footnotes!). The story kept me interested from beginning till end (to the point I ended up reading the mtl of the last few chapters just to finish the story). The characters are multifaceted with their distinct personalities and motives and all plot points wrapped up nicely! (Which was a relief cos I've been betrayed several times by authors with plot holes or underdeveloped side characters QAQ)... more>> If you can get past the r*pe/dub-con in the beginning, then please do give this a try! <<less

This story was dark and the first person POV made it somehow more heart-wrenching. There was some political aspect but it was running in the background. MC and ML relationship was the main plot of this novel. The smut scene of an eunuch was very interesting, was not expecting some of the things they did. Overall, a very enjoyable read although it was too short to my liking. It could’ve been explored further.
