Another crappy one. Top reasons not to read this novel:

  1. The martial spirits aren't explained clearly, unlike in other novels such as "Invincible".
  2. Harem formed within the first 45 chapters.
  3. Like many novels that Gravity has picked up lately, it has some r*pe elements. Girl given aphrodisiac, boy also receives it, they have s*x, girl tries to kill boy but becomes first harem member.
  4. Author simultaneously describes the MC as being "mature" and "wise beyond his years", but then has him act like a h**ny 16 year old.
  5. Really sick of MC's that are miraculously skilled in every aspect (e.g. Strong martial spirit, fast cultivating speed, very intelligent, and suddenly a genius at pill making on his first try?)

ETA: When I wrote this review, I read up to c19. Because I like to be thorough, and it's a given fact that many wuxia novels don't really "start" until about 50 chapters in, I wanted to keep reading to see if anything would change. In a way, it has. I wrote this review under the impression of "messy, poorly paced, overloaded with tropes, but if you don't care perhaps you'll still find value in it."

I have now read 39 chapters of this dreadful, dreadful novel. I can say hands... more>> down it was not worth giving a chance. What an absolute head ache. The MC does not act out of character, because there's no character to him. He's a bunch of ideas about what makes a cool MC with no real consistent core tying them together. There's no bad plot because there's no plot at all, just a string of tropey situations loosely following one after another with no real sense of interconnection. There's no story here, just pure power fantasy. As others have said, an eye rollingly handled r*pe plot with magic boner medicine, fortuitous encounters one after another, not one but TWO annoying spirit sidekicks...

The only value in this novel is a dissection of how not to write a story, which is being generous in even calling it a story. My greatest disappointment is I can't rate it 0 stars.

Previous review below:

Spoiler

As my friend would say - "messy."

There's nothing wrong with wish fulfillment - most wuxia is nothing more than that, some are just written with more finesse than others. But the writing in EMS is stilted and awkward. The dialogue, as Vex said, feels like it's constructed by a five year old. The protagonist is a black hole of charisma.

I've read worse novels, but usually it takes me, oh, 200 or so chapters to really feel the story drag at me to a point where I'm rolling my eyes. I've read more formulaic ones too. I've read more blatant wish fulfillment ones. But something about EMS is special. After only nineteen chapters, I'm tiredly rubbing my face and rolling my eyes. Maybe it's that less than 20 chapters had to pass before we got THREE separate harem flags, one of whom is his (non-blood related) sister, and all of them I want to hear about as much as a case of herpes. I could tell you details about their respective breasts and asses, but I couldn't give you a concrete description of their personalities (pouty and flirty doesn't count, I mean who they exist as outside of their interactions with the MC). I can't even remember their names - or the MCs name, at that. Maybe its the rush the author was in, tripping over their own feet, to hit at least five or so of the usual plot points before ten chapters of the story. Maybe it's the way it took all that boring, bland, formulaic, wish fulfillment and condensed it into the first two dozen chapters. I think that's my main issue, in fact. I don't mind formulaic wish fulfillment novels with bland, one-dimensional characters and a slowly materialising harem. I actually don't. But they usually wash over me, very slowly, over a course of hundreds of chapters, in little bite sized chunks of mediocrity that I could digest.

EMS was an immediate overload of all these things.

I mean, to take a more positive approach, because I don't want to be wholly negative, at the very least this novel makes no pretense about what it intends to be. Absolutely none. Its immediate delivery of all these repeated tropes is very straightforward and it doesn't dawdle around and trick you into thinking it's something more (boy have I regretted recommending novels I thought were pretty great and then three hundred chapters in I just... sigh...) and you will be able to decide very early on whether this is the novel for you. That's refreshing. Props for that?

This is not the novel for me. Maybe it's the novel for you. But it's definitely not the novel for me.

Hold on, let me give a stellar example of the writing. From chapter 20:

"You... just who are you?" The two men's faces were full of horror as they retreated. [...]

"Who I am isn't important. What's important is that there are no grievances between us, and yet you all wanted to kill me. It's evident what sort of people you are. Today I, Xiao Yun, am going to exterminate an evil for the public and erase you all from this earth."

Son! Don't drop a line like "Who I am isn't important" and then proceed to introduce yourself by name! It's an absurd piece of writing. It's like it was just written sentence by sentence with no real thought about what preceded or succeeded it, just based on what sounded cooler.

Messy.

This novel is just terrible after reading the raws it made clear that pretty much everybody there act like a beast with no regard for any decency or gratitue.

Even in a world where the fist rules when a doctor visits your house to heal your daughther you don't treat him like garbage and when your family enemy show up at your door you don't just hand over your realtives for them to kill just because they want.

The worst part is how this could be a good novel but if everybody... more>> acts like a irracional moron and thinks healing skills are useless in a world people get kill and criple over nothing you can't take this serious. <<less

I loved what I read so far and wanted to scream when I got to the teaser. This book would incite a reading marathon if it was complete. The concept of "martial spirits" is not original; however, the "martial spirit" this author created is very original and has so many possibilities. I found the personality of the protagonist to be solid and calm. I can't wait until the next update. It is really hard to give a more detailed review after only 41 chapters. I just hated seeing bad reviews... more>> when I found the book to be highly entertaining and I do not wish for it to be dropped. <<less

So where should I began?

It's cliche. It's full of already tried and tested tropes. The author is probably scared from trying something new. The whole story, whether you talk about the spirits or dialogues or plotlines, they are basically copy paste from other stories. Even the clan names are the old Xiaos and Fangs.

The story starts with our MC with a waste spirit. His cultivation stick he's the embarrassment of the whole clan. You have your usual set of bullies. The evil uncle. The branch genius who hates MCs guy.... more>> What's left?

Yeah the sick adopted sister, suffering from some sort of cold disease. The moment I read this, three things came into my mind :

1 Pure Yin Body

2 A teacher who will swoop down from nowhere and adopt her.

3 The sick sister s*upid trope copied

We also have the mystery father and mother. Genius parents with strong enemies, who manage to give their child to their parents.. Missing in Action. MC decides to save them and blah blah nonsense.

So we still don't have many chapters to review on, but so far it's the same. I can probably give you the basic idea of how the story's gonna go just from reading the beginning. The only difference is MC has already started flirting with girl from other family.

The characters are with few screw loose. All strength and no brains. Enemies popping out of nowhere just for the sake of showing how great our MC is. Dialogues are like 5 years old writing them.

A :"Am gonna kill you cuz I am great and you are weak! Maybe knowtow b4 father an do will give you a clean death".

MC: " You don't qualify cuz u r weak!"

A :" You brat, this is super duper mind blowing heaven shaking punch!"

That's the gist of it...a bit better at least until now.

Soooo not recommending Cuz its like few xianxias thrown into a blender and the result is this novel. <<less

First off I read this novel despite reading all the bad reviews this novel had. I believed the reviews were greatly exaggerated like come on every girl he meets is poisoned and falls in love with him after he heals them? I thought at most two or three girls he meets would be poisoned and the recurring" I can heal you despite my young age." And then the elders "really young sir you can? And then the young kid orders them to leave the room. "Yes at once your allowed... more>> to do whatever you wish to her despite meeting today."

Honestly this novel is straight tr*sh. I didn't expect it to be this bad tbh. I should have listened to those reviews even though it has a 4 star average rating. Let me tell you that this poisoned young miss whose beauty can topple kingdoms will somehow fall in love with him. It pains me to think how they would fall in love if it was an ugly old man. They wouldn't because it is poorly written plot. Regardless of the recurring poisoned girl for God knows what since he never tells us why they were poisoned except for one.

Regardless of that what made me the most pissed was the thick plot armour. Like are you serious that this man kills a genius then the clan his from comes to kill him but then he is saved by the clan that he met on the road. Ohh your clan is as strong as ours sorry we will have to possibly go to war for a little brat we met today. Also he goes on a slaughter of those clan members but the sect for some reason pardons him because his a genius? Ridiculous plot armour and hopeless plot.

The harem is also s*upid this guy falls in love with every girl he heals. Despite having a few women already he continues to entertain other women. Harem is okay but it has to be done properly. Not getting poisoned then healed as bam fall in love? That is Repeated continuously throughout the novel in under 200 chapters. Honestly In my opinion this novel is a waste of time with bad plot and plot armour everywhere.

I can't find how to put stars on it but I rate this 0.5 stars. <<less

I read this story up to chapter 82 before I couldn't endure it anymore.

How this story's rating is so high has me stumped.

The first few chapters were incredibly cliche and repetitive.

... more>> MC is regarded as tr*sh then suddenly out of good fortune, he gets an OP martial spirit, then the story gets annoying.

Somebody picks a fight with MC, he kicks their butt, the surrounding people are shocked and wonder if his talent has returned.

Now imagine doing this three or four times more before the Author realises he needed to shake things up, to keep people interested.

Poison comes along and suddenly everybody around the MC is poisoned and he is the only cure.

Suddenly every female he comes across eventually wants to sleep with him, even if they use Poison to do it.

The MC, doesn't do anything, instead he stays in the room and talks to them, sympathising with them.

We all know how that will end, and its made worse because he has a girlfriend.

So, let me guess, the Girlfriend will eventually find out about the other women and be okay with it?

Where did the 'Wise beyond his years' MC, go?

Then to top it off, I recognize a lot of the story from other light novels.

The poor levels of originality is shocking. <<less

Not the worst, not the best. Because I like Xianxia's my personal enjoyment bumps it up to 4 stars.

It doesn't bring anything new to the table so far. It has a bit of a 9 cauldrons vibe to it. But rather than being a robust and epic journey, it is closer to an embellished outline.

There are a few logic bombs, that make you wounder "why" the author chose that route. Specifically around MC's cultivation:

Spoiler

MC suffered for 8 years with zero cultivation progress... but is well versed in low ranked martial arts... He goes into the mountains, and realizes that his cultivation speed increases.... so does that mean he didn't go to the mountains for the previous 8 years?

Then his grandpa comes out and gives him an amazing inheritance with an unrivaled cultivation method... Gee, I wounder if MC had that 8 years ago, if he would have waisted 8 years...

This novel was a roller coaster for me, so I will give my review of it throughout the novel. I have to say, the beginning was pretty linear, making it a pretty average Xuanhuan novel. I'm a big fan of mysterious past novels, which kept me hooked. Xiao Yun's transition through multiple sects and secret realms was quite boring, which consists of of about 1000 chapters of the novel.

The novel instead, became MUCH better once he leaves the Heavenly Capital and goes to the Saint Domain. It explores his past,... more>> his parents (his father is EXTREMELY important character), and road to becoming a god, which I very much enjoyed. As the novel progresses, I was constantly annoyed by the fact that he did not give much attention to his martial spirits, but came to realize from Xiao Yun himself, that martial spirits, bloodlines etc. Are just auxillary things to reaching the road of a god. There are a fair balance of tournaments, arrogant masters in this part of the novel, and really like the character development of Xiao Yun himself throughout this part of the novel. This lasts about chapter 1000-1500.

Chapter 1500-2000 gave me I Shall Seal the Heaven vibes, because this is where it really starts making Xiao Yun, "a top cultivator", like Demon Sovereign Meng Hao, Human Sovereign Lin Ming, Ancient Godly Monarch Qin Wentian. Xiao Yun exceeds the thought of bloodlines and martial spirits, and focuses on the origin of all daos (primordial) to know all the daos and become an absolute being. His journey here is less about arrogant masters, but improving through a very difficult enemy (like a Demon King threatening to destroy his world for example). I have to give the author some really credit here, his explanation of the Dao was so detailed and complex that it even made me contemplate. This part of the novel was a solid 5 stars and could contend with the best cultivation novels.

Overall its a 4 star because of the beginning of the novel. It was just so average that it makes me sad that people will probably give it up and miss the real meat from the last 1000 chapters. But it is a hidden gem for sure.

Some quick spoilers maybe to keep people interested:

Spoiler

Xiao Yun was a god in his past life in a different world. He goes through 99 reincarnations chasing Ling Xi.

Xiao Yun's father was also his father in his past lives, and was called the Nine Heavens Supreme. His father has had as much of a journey as Xiao Yun. I heard the author was contemplating about writing a novel about his father's journey.

Yiyi is some ancient primordial saint that has been going through reincarnations to survive an ambush he went through as a Saint. Yiyi's meeting with Xiao Yun has been prearranged between multiple Saints.

[collapse]

Harem also was also kinda meh, most of the beautiful girls that like him throughout the novels don't end up being with him, except for the first few (there is some ambiguity tho).

Spoiler on harem:

Spoiler

Ling Xi, the girl he meets at the beginning, Xiao Yun has chased her for his past 99 reincarnations

Xiao Linger, his sister (not blood-related), daughter of one of Xiao Yun's father friends

Ren Xiuxin, the daughter of the sect master in the martial sect

Yan Clan girls, Shiyan and Yufei, they get introduced in the beginning so

Supposedly towards the end of the novel, there is some ambiguity of Xiao Yun's millions of reincarnations that he creates for his avatars, that some of them partner with the other different girls met, like the two phoenix princesses, the qilin princess, and Yao clan girl, but that's up to debate.

[collapse]

I also was kind of irked by the name of the novel, because eternal martial sovereign, represents his martial spirits dao and he deserves this name already by chapter 1000. But the last 500 chapters he becomes something MUCH more than that. <<less

I don't think there are even women in this novel besides the powerful men and their sick daughters.

Every single clan or place that the MC encounters, he will always be met with the request of "ohmygod, the clan leaders daughter is sick or poisoned, our antidotes and methods don't work, can someone heal her or help her while her poison is breaking out." Then once the MC says he can do it, everyone else in the scene is like, "are you sure you can do it? You're so young, "... more>> stares of incredulity. And when he tells all of them to get out the room so he can heal the daughter, they don't even really question why he tells them to do so.

There also seems to be a constant theme within the novel of that one clan member that hates him for no apparent reason other than being jealous of him or because he's "weak". As well as the MC having to help the clan he's staying at by helping them beat another clan. Too much repetition. The MC also doesn't know how to stay low-key, actually maybe he does, but circumstances always prevent him from doing so. Also every dungeon or inheritance place he has been to so far has been related to the fire attribute and he always finds a beast to partner up with because they're intoxicated by a dew he's able to create.

TLDR; very few women in the novel; majority of female characters are the daughters of the clan leader that he has to save from being poisoned. MC op and collects spiritual beasts like pokemon. He tries to be low-key but always ends up revealing his trump cards everytime. <<less

I'm only at around ch. 100 now. So far everything is pretty basic. The dialogue is basic. The plot is basic and extremely repetitive. At the beginning of the story 2 girls (one being his own sister) are sick and 'poisoned' and need MC to treat them. Then MC left his town and met a group whose young lady is poisoned. Then he goes to the city where the young lady's family lives and the whole family is poisoned. After he treated them all, he left to another city and... more>> guess what? yes, another young lady is poisoned. Few chapters after MC cured her, another 'poisoned young miss' appear. Like wtf????? barely 100 chapters and so many sick and poisoned young ladies...... srsly <<less

Pretty standard Cultivation story, not too good nor too bad. Translation is okay... with cliches as expected with generic villains. I liked Pill Refining but... its like the the MC just pulls things out of his ass without any explanation on how that works.
The Most annoying part though is poison. I mean every girl till now is poisoned and MC cures her.
Is poisoning a past time in the world even though its said its an Evil Art? Why is everyone poisoned all the time?

This is fine. The complaints people give it are true, all of them, but they are also blown way out of proportion. Overall, the novel is decent and entertaining, but not very original.

The characters are in depth enough to care about them, though not extremely immersive. The MC is a strong point and someone you can care about.

The setting is a strong point and quite interesting, and does tie elements together rather well and cohesively.

The plot is standard xianxia fare, but done well enough; it didn't wear on me much... more>> yet.

The complaints, as I said, are real but not important. He does save like 4 poisoned girls in 150 chapters, but who really cares; it's a lame overused plot element but it really is just that; it only gets annoying if you decide it annoys you. As for the r*pe, it's barely relevant past the five or so chapters its mentioned in and it's not treated as a significant event really (for better or worse) so while it's unpleasant you can pretty easily forget about it.

Overall, it's standard xianxia. If you like xianxias, you'll like it. If you don't, you won't. <<less

Has great potential if you ignore the generic a**holes everywhere and the fact that everyone who is against the MC just must be a 'bad guy' and evil/s*upid/no common sense...

At this stage he has like 6 girls (I have no probs with harem but please don't make it happen so easily at least make the MC put some effort in and not just... more>> have girls fall in his lap... <<less

This is a good novel, it has its elements of a wuxia novel but upto where I am it isn't overdone and is in a good ratio.

I don't know why some people don't like it but well it may not be upto their taste, but their reviews were over the top (like someone was going kratos on them for reading the book).

It's just another Wuxia story with a plot-armored over-powered main character. That said, the stories flow isn't half bad and the main character seems to be interesting. Decent writer but lacking in imagination, if you like the rest then you should like this one as well... I'm unsure about continuing personally since it lacks any umph that similar successful stories have.

Both overall quality and translation is top notch, I'm just tired of this story plot. AKA: weak former genius suddenly powers up to amazing levels without anyone noticing, stronger people... more>> keep on coming to kill him but he always powers up or gets rescued. Love interest with a girl that others consider to be too good for him, other girls interested as well... chaos ensues. OP and lucky events abound, enemies come from no-where. No plot building to speak of, just rinse and repeat with some character building. Enough said, if you aren't tired of this style then enjoy. Otherwise, consider yourself warned. <<less
