It was an exceptionally ordinary day, so unremarkable that Fang Chen couldn’t even recall what he had for breakfast that morning.

Like any other day, he went through the routine of washing up, having a meal, leaving for work, and returning home in the evening to organize files. However, everything changed when he heard strange noises outside just before going to sleep. He opened the door, and from that moment, everything became different.

A man with a rotting body, peculiar creatures that preyed on humans, a helpless middle-aged couple lying in a pool of blood, and an elite white-collar worker being consumed by their own pet… and that man who seemed to be following him everywhere.

This city wasn’t safe; they had to escape from here.

“I will always stay with you, right by your side.”

“Please, kill me.”

“Don’t be afraid.”

“I can’t remember who are you… I… Was I the one who killed you?”

They had committed a sin, and so the punishment began.

To start off, here's a spoiler-free summary:

The story begins with the everyday life of Fang Chen (MC), waking up and carrying on his usual routine. The neighbourhood he lives in hosts people from all walks of life, but he gradually feels a sense of unease as he continuously encounters a series of unexplainable events. He begins to question his own memory and everyone around him, and that's when the story starts to unfold...

Everyone, both the main and side characters, is fleshed out with their own backstory, revealing the sins... more>> they've each committed in the past. None of the side characters feel redundant, as everyone serves a purpose in telling a story.

Throughout the story, the author lays down subtle clues and well-thought-out foreshadowing bit by bit as the plot advances. All the small details scattered throughout the story are skilfully connected together, bringing everything full circle by the story's conclusion, which one may notice after a second read-through.

Personally, reading this story is like riding a roller coaster, as you're hit with one plot twist/turn after another. Since the novel is narrated from the perspective of the MC, we as readers are placed in the MC's shoes, experiencing the same sense of confusion as we gradually uncover the truth alongside him.

In the early half of the story, there's a mix of horror, sweetness, and humour.

it becomes darker and more heart-wrenching as it delves into the poignant pasts of both the MC and ML, revealing exactly what happened to them that led to their initial circumstances at the start of the story.

MC & ML relationship

The ML's love for the MC is really deep, and he's only gentle and protective towards the MC. Even though the MC doesn't remember anything about him from the start, his feelings for the MC are still there. In the beginning, the MC is really timid and easily scared to tears (though as the story progresses, you'll come to understand that he's actually crying because of other reasons), but there'll be a twist in the latter half of the story. To sum it up, both MC and ML are really lovable characters whom I can't help but wanna hug after knowing what they have gone through. I just feel that it's a bit regretful that the portrayal of the MC and ML's relationship doesn't make up a large part of the story. So, this novel may not cater to those seeking solely sweet moments between them.

All in all, I highly recommend giving this novel a chance, particularly without prior knowledge of spoilers. After all, with its suspenseful narrative, the joy lies in speculating and piecing together the puzzle as the plot unfolds. <<less
