Only thing I can say is the author is an idiot. New Zealand is not in the center of the Pacific it is located in the Southern Pacific Ocean near Australia. There is several islands located to the center of the Pacific however that would have worked just as well for the story that I imagine the the Author thought was New Zealand.

It is pretty easy to understand why the rating for this novel is dropping just reading the first few chapters of obvious lack of knowledge on the authors... more>> part. Felt like nails scratching a chalkboard every time I would hit a part that is obviously not right. All that is missing is the author saying the world is flat and that it is set on the back of elephants riding on a giant turtle.

Also how many noticed the giant snake on the cover is the same snake on the cover of The Desolate Era even thought they are different publishers? <<less

This is basically an 'After The Apocalypse' novel, only thing is that the Apocalypse is limited to New Zealand. The writing could be better, but at least it is not as bad as junk like ATG/ Emperor's Domination etc. If you like a novel where the MC isn't over powered and has to struggle a bit to survive, then you can try reading this.

Spoiler

The author tries hard to be realistic, but not too hard, since it is obvious that the author never bothered reading any book on biology.

Strong Points:

  • Author tries to write a "mature" novel, with a wise enlightened protagonist, and a clever antagonist.
  • There are no Spoiled Young masters or idiotic enemies with a deathwish, only people trying to survive.
  • Author is not afraid to kill off characters.

Weak Points:

  • Author explains stuff a lot. He seems to not realise that best authors follow the maxim: "Show, don't tell." Instead, he tells a lot.
  • Protagonist is way too wise and open minded.
  • The antagonist is way too clever and overly lucky.
  • The novel still has the shortcoming of all chinese novels: Everything and everyone bends over backwards to give these two characters exactly what they want.
  • Author is trying to shoehorn all kind of myths into a story where they don't belong. Example: first, the souls, then ghosts, then the underworld.
[collapse]

I rate this novel 3/5, but I have given it 5 stars just to offset some of the harebrained 1 star reviews.

Recommendation: Read Reincarnator for a better apocalypse novel instead. Or you can read Ze Tian Ji, Deathsutra, AWE, Chronicles of Primoridal wars instead. <<less

Don't bother reading this. it's good and interesting at the start but everyone except the MC and his daughter will slowly get killed off by the author.

The antagonist doesn't die and the entire story is about them fighting, getting their friends killed, then stop and run away. 30 chapters of them talking a hike up a mountain, meet again, fight again, get more friends killed. rinse and repeat + powerups.

Everyone also talks about how 'famous' they are, but people still like the antagonist more becus? uhh... they want to forgive... more>> him? in a world where people eat people and so on... yea okay. <<less

So the unique thing about this novel is that the author tries to incorporate realism into the story, meaning that the MC doesn't get lucky all the thing and have all the good things fall on him, the antagonist is actually somewhat capable and smart, and people important to the MC do die from time to time (I mean in an actual apocalypse, what reason is there for all of MC's friends to survive when everybody else is dying?).

Personally, I really enjoy this novel after getting sick of reading all... more>> the other cliche novels where it just becomes so predictable (MC is going to win every fight, MC is going to get all the good stuff, everybody is going to worship MC, everything goes the MC's way), and this novel is really far from that.

Another good thing about this novel is that the author develops the system of evolution really well, the characters in the story gets stronger and levels up in a logical and plausible way (at least to a layman in biology, but I mean I wouldn't want to read a science textbook anyway), so it's not just 'I'm stronger because I'm a seven star sword saint and you are a six star sword saint'.

Oops I think my hidden angst towards cliche novels are showing in this review but I do find this style of novel good and refreshing, do give it a try if you like the kind of story I described! <<less

Ever feel like ripping out your hair because the plot is super forced and s*upid? Here is a summary of the first 200 chapters. MC teams up with a bunch of people to survive the apocalypse, in that group is another dude who is a complete d*ck and later becomes evil and wants to kill the MC. Somehow, this evil dude constantly has "good" people as his followers. The MC's group split off from the evil dude's group but the two constantly fight each other. Every fight, side characters that... more>> are developed over tens of chapters die. The evil dude somehow got super powered up and his group is also strong as f. The fight ends, a lot of subordinates on both sides are dead. Through some s*upid plot line, the MC isn't able to finish off the evil guy and he escapes. They later meet again with new subordinates, new powers, and these subordinates die again, the evil dude escapes again. Rinse and repeat.

Makes you want to reach into the screen and just slap the author. <<less

I don't remember if the author doesn't know geography like the previous reviewer said, but I do think more scientific research could have helped. Like the fact that mutated birds or ocean creatures would probably affect the rest of the world even if you isolated New Zealand.

Regardless, I enjoy the MC, his daughter, and Sharpei. I'm tentatively optimistic about the story line so far. I guess right now I'm curious about who the villains are exactly and what evolutions the characters will go through. I'll probably make a more detailed... more>> review when more chapters are out.

Translation is stable so far, but there are only 38 chapters. The quality seems fine to me. <<less

pretty good novel that goes away from the normal standards, basically you will see here the struggle to adapt to a new era while still being part of the minority affected for this disaster, no cheat, no no plot armor that makes you want to shout bullsh*t as the screen nor cultivation systems that only exist to showcase how awesome the MC's are for beating those above their level, I really recommend it if you want to read something different

P.S. Also dont get too attached to the characters there is... more>> a lot of deaths <<less

Well, some parts are ok, but it sounds more and more like a biology documentary the more you read. I actually find myself skipping half a chapter sometimes because there's just a block of text describing more about the evolution, its stages, its powers, etc. Really really dry reading and I can feel myself yawning at times.

Another thing that really bothered me, was just more of a personal opinion on the MC. Sure, some people might like a genuinely nice MC who's willing to take on more troubles to help... more>> others. BUT, in this story, it's not even the MC being nice anymore, it's more like him being stepped on by others because he's trying to be the better person in situations where he should really be putting his foot down. There's just so many times he and his teammates get screwed over because he's willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, forgive others for mistakes, and just be an overall pushover. Just doesn't seem as realistic, especially since he's a group leader during an APOCALYPSE. Like, if he keeps making the same mistakes, some other people should really step up and tell him to change, not just keep saying, "You're such a nice guy, " every single time he makes a dumb decision.... <<less

everything feels so forced and super plot armor/devices

walls of text about how evolution is not something you can predict meaning you cant replicate the exact same powers its always just going to be somewhat random powers of a species at a random range of power level.

then you have multiple villians that some how rng the exact counter type powers and maxed possible range on power levels just so they are a threat.

forced enemies and betrayals (zero fore shadows make it feel super forced just to make new enemies that wont... more>> be a trivial joke)

i kind of wish this novel was alot shorter but then just retold multiple times from separate points of view that make one villian seem like a anti hero or the main hero in this novel seem like a super schemer villian that fools the public into thinking he is a hero. <<less

This novel feels like it's 99% filler material. The author has to throw in 10 random strangers' comments for every minor thing that happens. The pacing is so slow, even at the beginning. The entire first chapter is just a guy taking a child to the hospital. There's no hint of the plot until chapter 10 or something but I'm totally bored by then.

Intresting premise, some cool characters, the problem is the author kills of the characters that are interesting, but somehow lets some the dumb people and current as*hole live? At a certain point you're just creating tragedy for the sake of conflict, but with zero thought process for the plot, it's literally an endless loop of the same s*upid sh*t over and over again.

Unrealistic, and I'm not talking about the gene mutation part, I'm talking about the getting the strength of an ant, while having an human form, it's not possible. Athough an ant is strong in the microworld, it's because of the gravity, and body structure, so even if an ant grew to the size of an human, it won't be able to move as well, and wouldn't have the same strength to size ratios, not to mention an human gaining an ants genes, he wouldn't be able to flip cars if... more>> his physical body wasn't greatly modified, but it wasn't mentioned that he grew big, and an ants muscles aren't suitable for an endoskeletons creature, and even if the muscles worked, it wouldn't improve his strength since an humans body designed is very thin compared to an ants body, while also being bipedal, so it's impossible for him to fip the car so easily. I'm talking about an antagonist side character. <<less
