this story starts off well and seems to be interesting, but it later slowly turns the MC into an arrogant and selfish person.

while the change is slow and not abrupt, partly because the slow is slow and is mostly a slice of life of an MC who wants to be a hermit, it does leave a bad taste in your mouth once you realize that the MC isn't the same MC you've started to like at the start of the novel.

at the start, the MC is portrayed as... more>> a nice and kind person. he literally jumped into a river and almost drowned to death while trying to save someone. he is filial to his parents and respects the old. he doesn't want to interact with the powerful people but is persuaded to by one person and then more and more people start looking for him. not to mention that the system itself issues missions where he has to get expensive herbs to make medicine.

the second he gets rich however, all these is forgotten and the MC wants to live life as a hermit, dedicating his life to the system and becoming the best pharmacist in the world. the system however, forces him to actively seek patients and heal them.

as I mentioned earlier, he needs to buy expensive herbs to do this so he becomes okay with healing the rich and powerful. however he soon slowly shows his arrogance, where he refuses to treat people and is fine with watching them die if they do not obey his treatment plans which are almost all lifestyle changes (such as - do not eat fish, do not drink alcohol.. ect - oh yes, the author also hates fish for some odd reason since eating fish is somehow the root of all evil)

after a hundred chapters or so, the MC becomes proficient enough to use his medical knowledge to hurt people. and he does this often. making people who do not conform with his morals and views of the world or incur his displeasure crippled/handicapped/suffer.

strangely, he does not do anything to the rich people who target him and only attack the goons who annoy him and his parents.

fast forward a few more hundred chapters where his cultivation finally puts him at the top of the world, he starts using his internal strength to burst people eardrums and drive them insane as well.

at chapter 600, he finally causes someone's death due to his selfishness. he clearly knows that his formation on the mountain is harmful as it almost killed his mother a long time ago, and the formation later caused the death of someone who walked in accidentally to try and pluck some wild grass.

this formation is a little strange to be honest. at the start, it was only a an illusion formation, but later it became a qi gathering formation for no reason, then it started to hurt people and kill people...

oh and the MC also went on to burst the eardrums and drive the children of the old man whom he killed when they confronted him about it.

as for the romance....

i dont know what the author is trying to do with the romance honestly.

he was in a good relationship with one of the characters and they were happy and almost engaged, but she just dropped out of the story. a few hundred chapters later, it was said that they weren't talking ever since and then just gone....

and that sick rich girl who was treating him suddenly kept on popping out in the story.... <<less

C1-500:

If u don't like a slice of life type, don't read this. Yeah, u may call it filler for 500ch. For me, it is quite ok. Kinda of like gourmet food supplier but a lower quality version, instead of food, u got a sick person.

NOw let's talk about MC. MC is a turtle (such a coward which is the reason the story didn't move on), hypocrite (typical Chinese MC; made rules to be broken later)

How about the love story? Ouchh. It's like drinking salt water. No sweet, no sour,... more>> so boring.

Now then, u are curious how I can read until 900Ch? U see my name, then u know. And u are curious how I rate 4 stars? Again, see my name.. Hahahhaha.

Ch500-700: Yes, finally the author try to move on. A baby steps to make the story more colorful, more enemies to be introduced. However, the author is the same with MC (turtle head move out and move in). Hahahhaha.

Ch700-900: Martial art, poison, ghost, and the military is introduced, and still slow pace.

The story is about curing illness, so it takes time and the patients are coming continuously. SO the story jumps from A to B to C and back to A kind of like that. If u don't like this kind of writing, don't read.

Anyway I kind of like this slow pace with OP MC (super OP). The story is like Fishing the myriad heavens (FMH), but FMH ruins the story very fast. At the end, this story is going to move to that kind of direction too. So, I recommend that u only read this when u don't have the stuff to read and u need hundreds of chapter to enjoy this story. <<less

Ah the story starts off a bit weird. The MC is too accepting of the system. Do all Chinese people think of having systems in their heads? Is that why the chinese government restricts internet access lol? Just kidding hehe...

Anyway it's almost comical how the MC just takes it in stride it takes you out of the story a bit. Anyway this seems like another of those MC has a system and becomes super awesome from wastrel garbage status.

Not that far in, MC has stats but they don't do much... more>> so far other than kind of give him a bit more strength and endurance when hauling vegetables.

He started brewing medicine, that just started so not much else to say. I'll keep reading but since it seems to be in the real world there isn't any world building. The story isn't anything special so far. I might drop is something I dont like happens. I might keep reading I'm iffy about it. <<less

I like this novel as it's something to read to just relax and chill. No heavy drama, plot, etc. But it's something like I"'m really a Superstar" or "A Valiant Life" but it's much better in terms that so far I don't see racism or other stuff present in those two novels hence the higher rating.

Also, do not expect much in this novel in terms of story progression or plot [barely any plot even if it was there] as I said before you should read it to relax and see... more>> how the MC spends his day concocting medicine and interacting with people around him.

Action and martial arts are slowly introduced over hundreds of chapters, hasn't ruined the "slice of life" part of the story so far.

Note: Caught up with raws. <<less

It's a slice of life about a Chinese pharmacist that uses a system to gain more knowledge and ingredients. Originally I really enjoyed the story, but the MC becomes extremely arrogant. He respects gangsters and rich people more than poor people and his fellow villagers. He doesn't mind if his friends hurt his fellow villagers or bring them danger as long as they use money to make things right. He's supposedly practicing Taoism which teaches humility.

MC has a near drowning experience and suddenly finds a Ancient Pharmacist system in his head where he's able to plant herbs, brew medicine, diagnose illnesses, and learn taoist cultivation. He needs to complete the system's quests or else there's some punishment like getting his stats decreased.

I found this novel quite entertaining because there wasn't too much cliches. The MC wants a quiet peaceful life so the storyline is about 95% slice of life and some occasional conflict due to people hating on his medical ability.

The only thing stopping me... more>> from giving this novel a full 5 star is the translation team. It's done by Nyoi bo studio so you know it's going to be mediocre. In the beginning chapters, you will see lots of webnovel comments from readers correcting the translator. Yes, that's right, a bunch of white people checking raws and correcting the Chinese translator on his/her wrong translations! And the saddest part is that the readers were right! Most of the translations/editing are passable but you'll get sudden name changes, that's when you know original TL'er is missing and someone else is jumping in to help. Then around the 500 chapter mark, there's a bunch of chapters that read like MTL, so you know something definitely went wrong that week for them to churn out tr*sh quality work.

Aside from my complaints, it's a pretty good novel to read but it's very slow moving. Lots of repetitive patient X coming to see him and brewing medicine Y. The worst part of the whole novel is towards the end of the novel that will leave you with a sour taste in your mouth because you can tell the author is trying to drag the story out and suddenly ends everything in one chapter because he's bored or something. You're going to get over a hundred plus chapters of side characters popping out of nowhere around chapter 800's, talking about their daily lives and their conversations with each other. Then, they will disappear out of the blue and one of them will only meet the MC for one chapter and be gone as well. Such a great beginning, okay middle, and a major disappointment of an ending. <<less

The main character literally has zero backbone. His parents setup a blind date in the first 5 chapters, the main character is staunchly against it, but he does literally nothing about it. A good 90% of these Chinese novels have either a sociopathic main character or a doormat. This novel has the latter.

I kid you not, 50% of this novel is the main character's parents forcing him to meet with girls/interrogating him when he doesn't have one. This happens once every two chapters, sometimes even more.

EDIT 1: After reading some... more>> more of the novel, I realized I cannot possibly overexaggerate how often someone tries to get him a girlfriend. It is happening several times per chapter, and the whole "elixir" part of the novel is basically irrelevant compared to this. I think this once again proves how all Chinese novels that are modern-day are garbage.

Last Edit: This is easily one of the worst novels I've ever read. His sister is beyond annoying, annoying enough to be disowned if this novel were to be realistic. She even encouraged the main character to r*pe some girl who treated him to a meal. It's to the point where I just skip through the chapter whenever the main character's sister is mentioned. Not to mention that, as stated previously, every character, their mother, their aunt, their uncles, etc, all interrogate the main character about getting a girlfriend. It's to the point where 5+ chapters in a row are all dealing with this. <<less

What is this novel about? - A poor guy growing stuff, who was about to give up on it, gets a system and start planting magical herbs and make medicine. The system itself issues tasks that he has to reach, and will get rewards, bringing him to higher and higher level. I guess you could compare it to Gourmet Food Supplier, just the system is about growing herbs and making medicine for people.

What is good about this novel? - Nothing much, but as I liked this genre, I did enjoy... more>> reading it. For now the MC is quite likeable, atleast in terms of dealing with other people except his family (its the chinese filieal piety thing, where MC just cant have his own way of dealing with stuff without family pressing their own expectations on him). But other than that its nice to have a chill half-hermit like MC.

What is bad about this novel? - To be honest, a lot. But the worst I can think of is the writing. Its kinda flat, cant really feel any emotions of any character. The conversations feel really abrupt. It's like there are a list of things the author wants to bring up during the conversation, and he will literally just do that, one after another without considering the conversation flow. Once all the things from the list have been said, the conversation will end abruptly.

Then there are the repeating lines. For example any time a certain character visits MC, it will be: In the morning a Land rover goes up the road. Woof woof, dog barks. "Who is there" MC asks. "Its me" the guy answers. "Oh come in" MC says. And it will be the exact same time next time he comes. Or if somene else comes. Again, and again. Instead of just saying that the character came to MC, it has to be said he came with landrover, and that the dog barked and then MC asking who is there.

I could go on the annoying things about the writing style of this novel, but meh, there really isnt a point. Even though the writing is bad, I still read the translation and went on reading the raws with google translate. So atleast there is some kind of charm for this novel, which is also why im not giving it a bad rating, despite it really deserving a lower rating. <<less

I thought it was going to be like a farming guy and creating an elixir. You know, a relaxing slice of life but the MC is almost lying every single time even if you don't even need to.

He lied even about water. Like he thought his parents were an opps. Simple questions and he always turns them into something unnecessarily problematic. Oh yeah, my friend got the poison, I got this kind of herbal medicine but don't tell anyone about this (act suspicious).

A novel that I kinda enjoyed binge reading but decided to drop because the repetition/fillers are starting to annoy me and I can't see myself finishing the novel. I find the novel amusing as it kinda reflects the mentality of rural Chinese communities and realities in modern China. What's about this novel? Super super slow progression, fillers, and the lack of the system's use but then again, it's just my opinion.

***SPOILERS***

This is just my opinion, however, I believe this story is one of the better ones out there. I would give it a 4/5 for the character development and pacing. I DO NOT agree with what some of the other people have said about this novel. The character is in no way arrogant. If you want an arrogant character, you would look towards other Wuxia novels where an MC reincarnates in another world with an OP system. The MC in here refuses to treat others and would rather let... more>> them die because they are "entitled". Now if you can't even see this while reading this novel, then you are missing the point as all of these are life lessons. Think about it, MC is an Elixir Supplier, aka Traditional Chinese Medicinal Practitioner. He provides his patient (s) with a "specific" prescription and diet. The patient fails to follow through and continues to live an ignorant lifestyle (wine and dine and eat and drinks whatever the heck he/she wants). Upon finding out he/she is on deaths door, he/she offers to pay anything to save his/her own life. Money doesn't buy everything... <<less

Way too many decisions that make no sense. Feeling apathetic for some random people, but extremely considerate for others. Anxious to save someone he doesn't even know, but not bothered to save people his Uncles are recommending to him (even though they do it in a dicky way).

Story way too inconsistent and has many problems. Don't be fooled by that Hermit like start, it's merely the start.

Solid Slice of Life type Story, with an interesting MC that has some fun parents to help the story have meaning and progress.

That said its like a watered down version of Black Card. Black Card's weakness was it took 70 chapters to establish all the rules and foundation of the story and characters, which left you super invested in afterwards.

Elixir Supplier skips a lot of that, but suffers from lack of more in-depth side characters. We shall see in the future have not skimmed the raws yet.

The story begins with good promise. The MC was the very ordinary Chinese man with good heart, filial, kind, but no brain. Then he got the system which forced him to be half-xian, half-pharmacist, half-cultivator. It gave him missions and a bit of helps, and he played along well.

The mission slowly transformed him into the very ordinary Chinese second ancestor. He became selfish, kindless, cold blood guy who had ultimate power in his hand. But he still was that same no brainer.

Except cultivating and practicing herb growing and making medicine... more>> on his lonely hut on the lonely hill, he could do nothing. He had million dollars in his pocket, army of connections to top tier people. But he could not able to think of how to improve the environment of his village. He could not think of even building patient-waiting house ! Any patient who could not waiting obediently in the snow at the front door of his clinic deserved suffuring and death. Any patient who are not wagging tail obediently to his command deserved painful dead. Did the story intentionally tell us that it's impossible that the ordinary Chinese no-brain ordinary man could become smart?

As the story progressed, more fishy came in. This story was about MC who liked an eagle flying high to cloud nine. But there's LOT of chapters dealing with insects and worms crawling underground, which, after chapters of word filling, completed ignored and discarded because they made the story irrelevented.

In short, too much word filling chapters and stories.

Out of story.

Spoiler

These events showed reasons why the Chinese Medicine failed and unreliable. Chinese doctors, once they have any decent capabilty, are all kindless. Unlike Western medicine, ancient Chinese doctor do not want anyone to learn their secret arts of healing patient. They have no universal ethical codes too. Each have each own.

[collapse]

Good that, oppose to this poor novel, there still are many good TCM doctors in the real world that are willing to do Patience Centric Practice, and sharing their knowledges.

The background of the story also tell how corrupts of the Chinese society is. Bribery is everywhere. Connection is norm. Rules and Laws are only for controlling the low class citizen. Those who are rich or have connections with high class people/clan can do every thing they want.

The 2 of 5 stars is for this hidden background exposure, not the sub-stabdard story.

Why I read to the very near end but still don't like? First,

MC is a biology student who gets a system in his head about traditional chinese pharmacy a lost profession and begins making elixirs that heal people from illnesses medical gurus can't do anything about. Or can but with many side effects.

MC is a good moral character, non-harem seeking but he does get a couple of girls loving him and he chooses one.

It's interesting and the pacing is good, though I don't like slice of life genre I wasn't bored.

It was exiting waiting to read about how he develops himself to... more>> get points from the system by planting herbs or curing xxx number of patients to get a rare herb to use in treating patients.

The patient cases aren't solved on the spot but he encounters many patients and the tough ones wait till he gathers herbs or accumulates points etc.. But you don't feel bored waiting because he sees other patients also you feel built up suspense.

If I had to choose something bad about this it's his rival a rich young master who he once saved that turns on him bec. The girl he likes liked the ML instead. And he uses every opportunity to face slap him throughout the novel all to the very end, which bored me <<less

The truth of all the reviews and I respect the opinions of all. But there is something in which all those who read at least until chapter 900 or until completing it is that we thoroughly enjoy each chapter. The author had bad decisions like hastily finishing it, and many unfinished parts and many unfinished parts, which we all wanted to pass, but no... Very good reviews from people who know but to me the truth is that I do not care if it is "badly written" or "badly translated",... more>> the only thing I know is enjoy it a lot. For me the character was not arrogant, he did a lot of good things and just because he did not want to heal a few people who did not respect him for the most part. I'm not giving it 5 stars not because it doesn't deserve it but because I hope that one day this rough diamond will be polished, something that I think is impossible. I recommend it to anyone with patience, Sorry for my English as a translator and my bad writing, I felt this with my heart <<less

This novel is quite good for spending/waste your time :).

The novels tells the story of MC with a medicine system (traditional chinese farmacist/ medicine man) that gives the development from weak to strong. The pace is slow typical of slice of life novel and the romance is not quite good (so don't expect something from it).

The story and world building is kinda good, I enjoy it a lot. Unfortunately there's some loophole that seems forgotten by the author or due to abrupt ending (e.g : the 1st MC woman just... more>> dissapear and they just break up, the enemy in Ji city is kinda forgotten, the system cultivation progress is not completed (even the long term mission is not completed)) but overall still worth your time to read.

PS : not agreed with other reviewer, the MC is not coward or turtle, but I think he just don't wanna makes unnecesary trouble. Remember that he is a doctor not like other novel MC that always kills or kills a lot and please remember that the social governance system in China is different than other country, so it's not easy to protect your family if you kill any bigshot without plan/contingencies (yeah I know some plot hole could make it up, but, it doesn't make sense if the Chinesse government really let free someone that kills a lot and have superhuman power). But yeah, somehow the author kinda heat meat especially fish in the story :) <<less

Overall the story is a slice of life with a good flow. The story has 1000 chapters meaning it has some disadvantages that appear in other reviews. However overall even with the rushed ending the story over all is an amazing read. The story is well connected from beginning to end although some characters due fade over. The story is not perfect by any means but overall I would recommend people to read it. It's a worthwhile read.

Pretty good but not a masterpiece, tells the story of a scholar who gets a system, he goes on to become a traditional pharmacist (if I remember clearly), growing herbs, cultivating Qi (or Neixi), healing people, building clinics, cultivating reputation, accepting disciples, building a pharmaceutical company, and becoming the strongest person (i guess).

The storyline is quite unique because the MC lives in one place from the beginning to the end of the story. However, several things bother me quite a bit.

Spoiler

First, namely around chapter 700 and above, especially starting from chapter 800, there are very many chapters that focus on characters other than MC, which in my opinion are not very relevant to the whole story. It bothers me so much that I sometimes read very fast and skip sections. Well, quite a bad reading experience.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The second thing is about romance, I don't really like it, at first the MC was dating a classmate in high school, but it didn't end well, and it wasn't told how the end of his ex-girlfriend was. Then the MC goes out with the patient he has cured (about chapter 400 or 500 and above), yeah it's quite interesting, but too many chapters talk about her and MC which I think is very boring, I prefer MC's development in the medical and martial arts fields than romance. Btw there should be a romance tag in NU.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The third thing is about character, MC's character is quite good for his friends but not good for his enemies, he doesn't use the "uproot it by the roots" rule when facing his enemies, instead leaves them when they are dying, resulting one of his enemies heals and kills dozens of innocent people (even though it can be prevented). Well, not sure enough in my opinion. As for the side characters, it's pretty good, but there are a lot of characters that are pretty important but never mentioned again, which actually still affect the plot. On the other hand, there are many insignificant characters (in my opinion) who have a lot of flying hours.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The fourth thing is regarding the MC interaction, the interaction is very monotonous, please. When the MC talks to his parents no less than 70% talk about the MC's romance, for example "when are you getting married" and "how is your boyfriend?". When the MC interacts with his friends, the main thing he does is eat and drink all the time (throughout the story). Anyway, monotone

[collapse]

Spoiler

The fifth thing is the translation, well it's pretty bad, there are lots of inconsistent names, and sometimes the names are mistranslated, for example, it should be person A who is speaking but it is translated that person B is speaking. But it's enough to be readable.

[collapse]

I also want to comment about the chapter. At the beginning of the story, around chapter 150 and below, it seems as if the writer wrote several characters in one draft and then divided them into several chapters with almost the same number of characters. This results in almost no clear boundaries between chapters at all, much like a manhwa.

Lastly, the ending was too hasty, and unsatisfactory. Too many chapters are wasted on less relevant characters, which should be used to write a good ending.

Well, this story can be read at leisure if there is no better option. <<less

If you have time to waste, you can read this.

The story supposedly has potential but it lacks continuity and sometimes jarring.

Stories doesn't work like arcs, the author jumps from one storyline to another without really closing the previous one then you'll be surprised he'll return to it again or will never talk about it again.

For example, the story about his first girlfriend has ghosted him for no reason. His sister was supposed to get married and then after the engagement, she was not mentioned again. Even some of his friends,... more>> were just gone from the storyline. So aside from the main character, there are no good side stories. Even the medical system itself, was seldom mentioned anymore on the later chapters. <<less
