Rent Farrant discovered a magic book in his home library when he was a child.

The book was left behind by his ancestor, the legendary great magician, and it contained all kinds of information about magic. Rent read the book and continued his magic training, and became proficient in all kinds of magic.

Eventually, Rent grew up and came to the Magic Academy in the royal capital. He took the entrance exam, but the value that came out when measuring his magic power was,

「Zero magic power.」

Without understanding why, Rent was admitted to the lowest class, Class C. The students there are all failures.

Sarah, even though she comes from a prestigious knight’s family, she was dropped into Class C because of her rebellious attitude towards the examiner.

Diene, from a merchant family, was forced to enroll because she was told to look for a noble husband to make connections.

Muno, from an orphanage, he can’t read and write letters.

While taking classes with them, the principal of the Magic Academy notices Rent’s talent.

「The reason you were considered to have zero magic power was the measurement tool’s fault. Your magic power can’t be measured by modern magic. What you are using is the lost ancient magic.」

Rent, who is the last user of ancient magic, was dropped into the lowest class, Class C, but he decided to teach magic to his classmates.

His classmates are considered failures by the standards of modern magic, but for Rent, they have plenty of room to grow.
In order to get to Class A with all of his classmates, Rent begins his struggle.

I genuinely don't know what to rate this novel. On one hand, I truly think that the author has a very well fleshed out magic system (at least from what I've read thus far), on the other hand it falls short due to the way each chapter is structured.

The length of the chapters are fairly short, leading to the events that happen over the course of 40+ chapters feeling fast-paced but dry.

The reason why it feels dry is because of overtly cookie cutter characters. Some characters, such as the principal... more>> of the school for instance is your typical "loli baba" that gets utterly cranky when you call her that and loves pulling pranks on people. Sound familiar? How about a fiery red haired swordswoman who is good at fire magic and is also sharp-tongued?

But is that enough to call the chapters dry? Well, no. What really is holding this novel back is that it is predictable; really predictable. It's as if you're experiencing Deja Vu or something. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not here to hate on cliches. The tropes and plot points that have been milked dry by authors have been milked dry because they work. However, it is very hard to write a cliche story and get it right. It requires an adequate amount of ingenuity mixed into it for the cliche plot points and charcters to not feel stale. This novel lacks that ingenuity.

I'm still going to soldier on through and see if it gets any better, if I wasn't a sucker for a decent magic system I would've dropped it after this review. I'll update my review and add a rating when I feel comfortable doing so, but for now, this remains an unimpressive and cookie cutter novel that I'd hesitate to recommend. <<less
