220 years ago, in the legendary Dragon Demon War, Hero Azell ended the war by killing the evil Dragon Demon race’s King Atein. He was able to save the population, but as a consequence, he was cursed. While he was dying, the high magician suggested a gamble that might save his life.

‘The Dragon’s hibernation is the only key to saving your life.’

Instead of a human’s sleep, he slept the sleep of the dragons and he was able to overcome the curse. Now he is realizing that he has slept way longer than a human’s life span.

What started off intriguing slowly whittled away until it was something of an obligation to finish.

DMW wasn’t bad but wasn’t good either. The writing is decent but dialogue during the fights breaks rhythm and makes fights boring, ex: Azell use xxx move, *BOOM* “info dump” fighting again ect...

The characters feel 2 dimensional but not because they don’t have story and character but because the story requires them to be that way. Most characters are only there to fill out a roster and everything always comes back to “we aren’t strong... more>> enough but Azell is hurt”.

The big mystery and plot the villain has feels boring and out of touch which is in line with the character. This doesn’t help the reader keep interested though. The story has a rushed pacing in the first 30% and the final 50%. Most of the time I found myself scanning or skimming the chapters and by the end I just didn’t care. This doesn’t correlate to the release schedule because I was reading after completion. The story itself just feels boring and forced. The writer built a great world and interesting magic system, neat races and solid backstories but the whole story basically comes down to “the same old song and dance” literally.

Spoiler

Throughout the story you find out about the previous war and the ambitions of the villain Atein. This explains his reasonings and the other great evils that have tried changing the world before, but no one learns anything. Azell is forced to fight him again and stop another calamity just like before he went to sleep so you feel like your just getting the epilogue of a far grander story. This feeling suffocates this book and the current era making it all feel like another fight with xxx villain like you saw last week in your Saturday morning cartoons. It’s just another episode in a long running shounen.

[collapse]

In conclusion its just okay, the fights are okay, the story is okay, the characters are okay, and the ending is okay. The build was good, the payoff was cheap. The best part was the world building, I loved reading the history and the magic was subtle in explanation but flushed out just enough to know what’s going on. Like I said in the spoiler section this feels like an epilogue not a standalone story.

Tl;dr: it's good, read it. And most of my points are directed at some of the claims from the bad reviews.

Great read so far. Writing structure is alright in my opinion, cause I read the other reviews saying the author is all over the place with tons of info dump. I'd have to sorta agree, but it's not like the its regurgitated info dump you see in wuxia/xianxia. The info helps understand the power levels, cultivation, and world building within the story. Theres a lot mysteries and questions that pop... more>> up, but most of the questions I had (and you too probably) get answered throughout the story - you just need to be patient to get to it (and actually read it).

There's a lot of reviews indicating how they think the characters are s*upid, for example - oh why didn't they realize this is the hero from the past, or why is he getting along with the dragon demons... blah blah. I'd like to point out that 220 years have passed. Whether it's real or fictional, like in what kind of sense does it make for a HUMAN to live that long without a precedent of that happening in the first place or special circumstances allowing it? Denial is a real thing when a truth cannot be explained. The reason why it's so obvious to us is because we have GOD mode access to this information, and OBVIOUSLY we know this truth but the characters in the story do not. I didn't think I'd have to point the obvious towards those reviews. Also, I'd like to point out the fact that the author explains that, like the real world, nothing is always black and white. There are always going to be gray areas. There's always going to be evil humans as there are good, and there's going to be bad dragon demons/maijins as there are good. This Korean novel pretty much "sublety" hits you over the head with this fact, but I guess they didn't get to read that part properly.

Another point to make out, the author goes into many different perspectives with this story so the lines get blurred a bit. I'll refrain from any major spoilers with this review, however, I feel like doing this is really refreshing instead of just a story about good vs. evil, and s*upid villains that are completely useless vs. our protagonist. Sure there's a bit of dialogue in there, but this should be a given when reading something like this. There are some grammatical issues and information discrepancies, but I can live with it. The author also doesnt drop all the side characters, most of them get brought back or have major parts within the story. I think all the different point of views could be a turn off to some people, but again I think it's very refreshing to see this.

Spoiler

There was one reviewer indicating that the MC thinks of swords as disposable tools until he gets his dragon weapon. Basically, "like why does he say its disposable when suddenly he gets an OP weapon and it's no longer disposable". I agree with his statement, but it does get mentioned that to make this dragon weapon, a user needs to impart a bit of their soul into it. In the later chapters, you see other dragon weapons and understand that the dragon weapon is not just a tool or weapon, but it signifies their beliefs in the past for the present and future. Also overall, these weapons are stronger than normally smithed weapons. Meaning that they are able to withstand the magical/dragon demon energy that's output from the user compared to normal weapons that'll break after an X amount of use when inputting a type of energy source into it. In my opinion, it was obviously implied, but I think the author just wasn't able to clarify this point.

Another point, there was a gap in knowledge due to an event similar to the black plague where almost everyone died and during these events, the enemies stole intelligence and killed people with any knowledge of it. That's why basic cultivation skills are there but the high tier skills are gone.
Also, to the person that said the MC is underpowered. I wholeheartedly agree, because the enemies get exponentially stronger and smarter. But to that, I'd like to say where's the fun in a story where you see extremely OP people from the get go. Don't get me wrong, I do like LNs like Death March, but I feel like that kind of plot armor or feature isnt needed with this story. You'll eventually see him power up crazy levels where he's at his previous strength levels (if not stronger) and the fights just get crazier.

5/5 story

4.5/5 grammar

5/5 translation

Overall 4.83/5

Conclusion: Seriously, give it a read. It might not be your cup of tea cause the story starts out intriguing and questionable actions pop up as the story goes along. But the author, I feel, does a good job covering them up with plot devices and key & quest motifs in the later ending chapters. I honestly read this novel when it was only 20 chapters a long time ago when the translator was hosting it on his own page and dropped it. But I'm glad I picked it up again last week and binge read it to where I'm at. I will give an updated review once I finish. <<less

Just saying its pretty well planned story.

Story about MC who awakened after 220 years sleeping in future to overcome curse.

Character is well versed and detailed enough. Atleast I dont forget any important name while reading this and seems author did have good naming sense.

Nah about plot, it was really unbearable to me at first. Suddenly wake up and no one really questioning MC. At later chapter, the story become decent as MC party goes to journey. The story did have some well planned mystery that make everything come to sense...... more>> but the event at some arc sometimes doesnt feel natural and feel forced imo.

Spoiler

Like how MC power truly strong yet no one believe him as actual hero, how kairen who said one of strongest people of the era later couldnt help much against enemies, a lot plot armor protect MC and his party survived while dying, confused deus ex machina stuff how yuren become atein reincarnation yet his facing revived atein and etc

[collapse]

Its still pretty much enjoyable, as some mystery solved slowly like who are kayalia and how the connection each character does, like enora with MC.

Its fun ride, did enjoy this novel as proved by how im actually remembering all event happen in this novel. It just some event happen pissed me off on novel make myself couldnt give full star due my personal preferences. <<less

I know it's rather rough in the beginning but it build up the world and character nicely.

It's not for impatient people tough, you probably give it up in <150 chapter.

If you like mystery, you probably like this, the truth about the world and MC's friend is revealed in 180ish chapter but we still didn't know about the mystery of the enemies.

One of the pros of this novel is the enemy. They have motive, story, and not flatout cardboard evil. The world building and power system is good (but confusing in... more>> the early chapter) <<less

If I had to describe this novel, not gonna lie kinda cliche but also really refreshing. The MC is very OP, or at least he was before the story began. Azell (our main character) was an orphaned soldier during a great war against the Demon Dragons 220 years ago. Later in the war after studying under 5 masters and after fighting for years became strong enough to challenge the King of the Demon Dragons, becoming victorious after a great duel. However, upon victory he was afflicted with a curse that... more>> would rob him of his vitality, in a short few years killing him. His Best Friend Carlos, a fellow solider and genius magician thought up a scheme for him to survive. He will undergo a deep hibernation like a dragon, focusing everything on driving out the curse. 220 years and Azell awakens from his slumber to find his body in a deplorable state. His original cultivation his basically collapsed and he has none of his previous magic! His muscular power body? hell he looks as if he been starved to the point of other questioning how he could still be alive!

2nd paragraph has a little spoiler in it but, not to much!

Spoiler

Now our former MC who is known as a great hero in the history books must now restore himself to full power. The world is different from before, all of his friends and family have perished long ago. Much knowledge of past has vanished while new knowledge floats around that his been discovered. Many old secrets, important secrets have long since become extinct from the world. Follow Azell with memories of his past, reflect the present as the threat of the Demon Dragon King has no disappeared and plans to make his own return! The supporters of Co-existance and freedom and the Demon Dragons Kings oppressive rule are still fighting in the shadows even now. The war may have ended, but the world is far from peace...

______________________________________________________

Honestly its a great story of swords and magic, refreshingly non harem with a MC who fights for justice. He doesn't fight the Demon Dragons, he fights the ones that follow the King from the past. Many rejected the king's ideals, and support co-existing with humans. For the record, Demon Dragons look very similar to humans except a few distinguishing features such as horns and gems on the hands. Some of the MC's allies are Demon Dragons and half-human Demon Dragons, I quite like how the race as a whole are not the enemy but rather most of them. Its refreshing because some humans support the Demon Dragon king as well, it much more realistic that way.

IMO its not the best thing you'll ever read. But it won't be the worse, hell it'll be above average at the very least. If you need a refresh from all those shitty harem novels then there ya go. Also this story is supposed to have a singular Love interest and although I got guess I don't really know yet. Though I look forward to finding out! <<less

I only rate things I like a lot to share it around. This is one of the better Sword, Magic, Dragon books I have read recently. All the characters are likable. The only issue I actually have is in some instances author plays a character up in one fashion but then makes him do something else that is very long lasting. Not in the story but lets just say Main character is like I do not want to get fat. But then a fast food employee insults him... so he... more>> eats the fast food to insult the man. Though he can be a man who messes up but there were 1-2 instances I thought, that seems out of character. Beyond that loved this so far.

On a side note, I know a lot of people reviewed saying MC talks to much when he fights and their is not enough fighting. I can say I disagree. Thought there was more than enough fighting and the reason he talks is so he can goad them into mistakes, you should understand why he must in his current situation once you read first part. <<less

After I finished reading this far, in my mind there was two word "EMPEROR DOMINATION". Dragon maken war plot is like Emperor Domination but with less domineering, bland and plain MC. Okay from the naration we know that the MC have lustrous red hair, with handsome appearance.

Except his look, there nothing noticeable his character is like other HERO MC in novel.. Held justice and rightness.. Climb from bottom... And I think he never trying have interaction with another character.. Except on battle.. Out that situation he just stand and they... more>> were like mammoth flying to the lamp..

I don't know why... But I can't feel the deep of story, so all the time I just scanning the story and starting to read when battle scene appeared.

Fortunately the writing style or the translator is good so its passable to read.
Or I just have been accustomed with bold, shameless, darker, mastermind MC, who knows? ??

I will try continue read this.. <<less

Interesting enough story. A classic heroic main character who will do the right thing because he thinks it's the right thing. He still remains entertaining though. Most of the characters seem to have a bit of depth to them. There's even a decent reason given as to why humans would side with the dragon demon race. A bit of the story is confusing especially that Demon Dragons and Demon Dragon race are mentioned so often and there's only a word separating them. It's also sometimes hard to tell what's happening... more>> in fights because he likes playing mind games. As for alexelielchain's confusion. Dragon Demon Race members fought on the side of the humans too so there's no reason for the MC to hate the entire race. <<less

Pretty good at the moment. MC breaks free of his hibernation and is currently regaining his power and adapting to a changed world. At the same time, he has to make sure he doesn’t give away his identity for various reasons (like wanting to live a peaceful life and wanting to avoid trouble). Of course, being a hero, he can’t help but assist those in need, even if his strength isn’t at a level he feels is comfortable enough to get out of those problems unscathed.

Basically, I like this type... more>> of good hero. Better than hypocritical reincarnated asses. Hrm hrm. <<less

A "strong" MC who's constantly at a disadvantage and always gets into trouble (or trouble comes to him), fights that are unnecessarily prolonged to fill the pages and an annoying supporting cast or minor characters that only can be described as burdens and stereotypical villains with muhahaha-like reactions and mindset. At the same time the author somehow managed to keep the novel superficial with flat characters. Just skip this novel. Really.

I can't really think any PROS, 'cause all the good thing are just Average. There are judt a few CONS but that's enough for me to drop it. This isn't the normal 'Strong from the Start' tag. Yes, the Protagonist is strong from the start but it's because he's in a backward era and those around him are just kids. He's only strong at the start then get weak at the middle then get strong again. D*mn. The most annoying thing are the 'Prophecy' guys, the Guardian Shadows. Although it is explained later on..
Spoiler

It is explained on chapter 158, so that means those s*upid things will annoy you for the first half of the novel

Also the author sure talks more than the characters. Almost every single thing on the novel is been explained by the author. Another fricking Wikipedia novel.

I'm being generous to give this a 3 star rating. I thought this was a good story because of the premise but alas, there's so many plot holes about the story. I tolerated it for a long time but I can't help but be disappointed about the story progression. Example is when he mentioned that he doesn't want to be tied down to anyone yet he became subordinate of the princess. Second one is he only see weapons as disposable tools yet he has a sword which is very important... more>> in his life. Added to the fact that the plot tied down to his weapon is very boring.

Overall assessment: if you just want to read a story full of plot holes and cliche then this one is for you. <<less

Have read the series from start to finish. Its a really good novel, Especially when I dun even like most korean styles (drama) novels (personal preference)

Dragon Maken War is basically a series of a hero forced into a fight (that he already won) further into the future where his war didnt end with is victory (from his time). A simple summary would be:

If you like stories of intense battles, with unique techniques and heavy stakes but with less drama, this is a good series to pick up.

Boring. The only thing I can say about this novel is that at least it's not full of cliches. The premise of the story has potential, but the way it comes across makes me wants to fall asleep.

Even after reading it to 200+ chapters I still have no impression of the characters, including the MC. Seriously, the characters are so bland. They're just there; the entire plot and cast might just be background cardboard cutouts with no discernable features whatsoever.

Of all the novels in my reading list, this is the... more>> one that makes me wonder what I was thinking when I added it.

It's not bad, per say. But there's nothing that really stands out, either. Between all my reads, I would say that this novel is basically filler. Okay for a lazy afternoon but not much substance there. <<less

I was on board this story for a while, but I was ultimately disappointed. It's not particularly well-written, and it turns out it isn't particularly well-thought-out.

If a story is going to have an OP protagonist, then it needs to ground that power in its world. Otherwise we're constantly left wondering "does the MC's OP powers apply to this situation, or will this be a problem?" In this story, the MC's abilities are never established, so every time the character pulls a new ability out to solve a problem, it comes... more>> out of nowhere. It's repeatedly stated several times that the MC's is weakened, but that's never a problem because he never has to rely on power to win; he always has the perfect counter for any problem he encounters.

The biggest problem, though, is that the premise doesn't make sense. It's only been 200 years, and yet the entire world has completely forgotten several very specific and incredibly important bits of knowledge.

Spoiler

Supposedly, this is the work of the servants of the Demon King, but common knowledge can't simply be erased from the collective consciousness over the course of a single generation. The people that grew up being taught this stuff would still be alive.

The beginning of the novel was pretty interesting, MC awoken from 220 years of hibernation to find everything has changed. But the dialogue makes everything worse. I could not stand the way everyone interacts and the Korean terms just makes everything unreadable. Maybe a Korean kid with 8th grader syndrome would enjoy this better than me.

I made it to Chapter 45 before I dropped this one.

The MC has a decent personality contrary to some reviews here stated. I really feel like he is under-powered for a guy that killed the demon king though. It's not like he was sent back in time to an early version of his body and had to reclaim his power with the knowledge of the future he has. The guy just went into hibernation and basically woke up 200 years into the future. I can enjoy non over powered MC's... more>> but I feel like his progress is way to slow to be a MC/HERO. I also saw some people commenting on the long dragon ball z talks in the fights. That part didn't bother me much because ive see worse but my problem with it was how cliche the talk was. Things like "H-how did you do that?! IMPOSSSIBRU!!!" and also "How dare a mere human defeat me!". The writing felt fairly childish at times.

tbh I started reading this one on wuxiaworld and the cover art caught my eye because I'm a guy that judges a book by it's cover. The artwork there made it seem like it was a lot darker than what it was. Just look how different the art work here and there are of the same story. Ref:

They look like they belong to two different stories. If it weren't for the text that is exactly what I would believe.
It's not dark in the slightest but the Characters are likable enough. The story was just not my cup of tea. The idea was good, but I was bored while reading it for the most part. I feel like this is only due to my personal preferences and I think a lot of people would still enjoy this. It's only 2 stars from me, but I guess I'm just saying that people should still give it a chance if they are interested. Could be your cup of tea. One mans tr*sh is another mans treasure. <<less

This story surprised me a lot. It has a different depth from most Korean novels.

MC (5/5) : Not overconfident, just knowing what he can and cannot do. Has a lot of experience and baggage as a war veteran and his abilities and personality are byproducts of those experiences. His history isn't explored in every detail but has more than enough to really understand the character.

Characters (5/5) : Here is where this novel shines. The characters are not bi-dimensional and counted as a description paragraph and then a page of battle... more>> potential. They have their history, their relationships, their motivations, their happy and sad moments and that greatly influences their decisions as it should be.

Plot (5/5) : I was looking for silver and found gold. The basic initial story remembers a bit The New Gate but the war hero don't reach the future twice as OP as he previously was, he get there weak, lost and lonely. Thanks to the main antagonist, things are not so simple but not complex enough for the reader feel lost, just enough so you don't know what's going on now but understand it in the next step. Seeing everything unfurl was quite enjoyable.

Storytelling (4/5) : Sometimes it is slow paced but it wasn't why I didn't give a 5 here. The author could have a better naming sense as everything is "Dragon Demon This", "Dragon Demon That". Sometimes he repeats some well know info and that repetition bothers me a bit. Other than that, the story has a nice flow. <<less
