“I think… my boyfriend is trying to kill me,” Lin Sanjiu muttered.

As she thought about that rich, handsome, and gentle boyfriend of hers, she could not help but tremble all over.

At the present, someone close to her had personally raised the curtains to an apocalyptic hell, and slowly, it was creeping up to her.

—-

What if earth devolved into a apocalyptic hellhole? What if you found out you not only have to survive just one apocalyptic event but have to struggle through multiple worlds with different end-world scenarios? And you get to meet more superpowered crazies than you can imagine!

Presenting the worst nightmare that your weird doomsday prepper neighbour with a bunker full of canned beans could have, Doomsday Wonderland is a novel filled with subverted tropes, non-OP characters and a female friendly label which offends all politically correct fanatics.

As ‘lucky’ humans evolved to posthumans with the ability to adapt to the New World or mutate into disgusting duoluozhongs to survive, follow Lin Sanjiu as she struggles through multiple challenges to just live one more day… and make sense of this New World that will no longer be the same.

Hi, I am the translator for this novel. Of course I will rate it five. I have been busy so I couldn't get the team to add more to this page. I just want to say that I have read many mangas and novels and this web novel really has a outstanding plot with many interesting scenarios and characters! That was why I wanted to translate it very badly. This is the sort of story that you will just grow to love more and more as it unfolds. Give it... more>> a chance! <<less

As soon as I opened the first chapter on a whim, I was s**ked into the story. This is an intense apocalyptic-survival story with a resourceful female main character.

Only 25 chapters were released at the time of this review, but so far it looks very promising.

Summary:

    • For days, Lin Sanjiu has had the foreboding feeling that her too-perfect boyfriend is planning to kill her. On the eave of what will soon be revealed as the start of a disastrous heat wave, her suspicions become a deadly reality. Lin Sanjiu is suddenly and brutally forced into a world in which the apocalypse is nigh, all normal humans will perish, and the few survivors gain abilities or become hideous, man-eating monsters. Even worse, she learns that in a few months she'll be transported into a parallel world that's also going through an apocalypse, and this process will continue again, and again... assuming she lives that long.
First thoughts:

    • This is an exciting read full of suspense, danger, and mystery. The pacing is quick and action-packed, and the writing is excellent. The author doesn't bother to make the apocalypse look "pretty" -- it is filled with terror and rotting corpses. For those who are worried, I didn't find this story too scary -- it's intense, suspenseful, and a bit creepy, but with a healthy dash of fantasy and special powers.
    • Overall, I highly recommend you try it. The story seems to be headed in a very promising direction, the heroine is likeable, and the plot is pretty unique here on NovelUpdates. I'll be following it closely!
Translation:

    • The English and grammar are great. The translators are good at capturing the right feeling and scenery, especially the creepy suspenseful moments.
    • The chapters are a good length, easy to read, and keep you eager for more.
    • New chapters are released frequently, almost every day.

Meh.

I was entertained enough to binge read it up to 134.

Here's MY reasons for reading all day long. May not be yours, but may help others.

  • The MC doesn't start off super op. She has to work here way towards it, and BARELY by the 120's does she start seeing more power ups. Overall her growth rate is pretty easy and linear. The writer does enough plotting that I'm not left wondering too much about plot vs armour. So if you like MC who struggle a bit before growing, this maybe your kind of story.
  • The genre is transdimensional hopping like the Sliders from the sci-fi series or Terror Infinity story. MC is JUST starting to do dimensional traveling as of 130s. So... it's not like every couple of chapters. I figure author does a few dozen chapters as one arc and then another dozen as another. And so on. Pretty much like how other online writers do it. I like it, the current arc of the 130's is pretty harsh. Just a warning.
  • Supporting side characters do get screen time. Some may even be good enough to get a best supporting actor award with how much details they are given. Others maybe not so much. But overall I got enough that I could see myself hanging out with some of them or AVOIDING some....
  • btw. NO romance. tag is kind of misleading. So don't fall for it.
  • Good female lead MC. I can easily see her hanging out with Jessica Jones from Netflix, Black Widow and maybe Wonder Woman. She's confident. Sure and not just a pretty face or t&a. (Ok. Maybe not as pretty as those gals, but you get what I mean) She isn't a perfect Mary Sue OP type, but a character that grows stronger over time and overcomes a majority of her obstacles with her wit more than her brawns or b**bs.
Overall, if these points agree with you, give it a read. You may be surprised like me and find yourself binging.

How do I say this...

This is... an actual story? An honest to god plot with honest to god character development, side character development, interesting and dynamic settings, and some actual tension and suspense? The translation and editing is also top notch, to the point it feels like it could have been written in English originally.

This definitely deserves to be rated much higher than it is currently rated. It is significantly better written than most of the other stories on this site and the author seems to be well read and... more>> educated, throwing in impressive references and allusions all the time. I'm sure I missed most of them.

Plot: 4.5/5
The Plot is fairly straightforward near the start. It's a survival story set in a post-apocalyptic, multi-dimensional universe. There is also an undercurrent of mystery regarding how things came to be the way they are, as well as about what the intentions of other characters are. A lot of the surprise plot twists are genuine surprises which are subtly foreshadowed in crafty ways. The characters interact with the setting even when the main character isn't present. This is something I totally did not expect from a web novel but it did. But why is this mentioned in the plot section instead of the character section of this review? Because the interactions that side characters make are actually a part of the plot. That is to say, the plot doesn't depend solely on the actions of the main character. It's wonderfully complex and dynamic.

Style: 4.5/5
In most translated web novels, I don't expect a decent style of narration/writing to survive the translation process. Yet for some reason, either because the translation team is amazing or because the author is just that good, this story retains a consistent, engaging, and sophisticated style.

Characters: 5/5
As mentioned above, the main character isn't the only dynamic character. Of course, she might get too chummy with some people too soon, but it's executed in a way that makes it sorta believable? In fact, by doing so, the author subverts our expectations at points where we might expect things to proceed in one way, only to trick us later once we are lulled into a sense of security regarding certain characters and their intentions.

Conclusion:
This is a good story. I'm giving it 5 stars here because it stands way above most of the stuff I read here, but if it was on goodreads (because I definitely think this is good enough to be professionally published) I would give it a solid 4/4.5. It's a very nice story, a little rough around the edges especially with regards to pacing and narrative techniques, but it is definitely worth your time if you're looking for a nice read with an amazing main character (the clever protagonist tag is there for a reason) and a story that'll keep you engaged.

Oh yeah, power through the first five or so chapters. They're a little strange but definitely worth it once the cast of characters is officially introduced. It's only uphill from there!

Also a side note about some of the more negative reviews, a lot of them are for the start of the novel, which is the part I mentioned isn't as straightforward as it first appears. Also, I suspect quite a lot of random 1 star reviews come from this one arc later on that pushes against some peoples' old fashioned and unimportant views. <<less

It's pretty fantastic. I love the main character, who is a complete badass, and there is always some dystopian twist to whatever is happening at the moment.

I'd probably say that the great flaw of this series is that it's a slice of life in a dystopian post-apocalyptic horror thriller. Which makes sense, since the protagonist is basically struggling to survive day-to-day, but it also means that there's not a huge overarching plot continuity. So if you're not a fan of whatever arc is happening at the moment, it can be... more>> difficult to get through it. <<less

It starts off great, like a real novel you know? That's why idiots are rating this 1 star because they want standard xianxia, or infinity, or wish fullfilment. The MC is heading from a bad situation to worse all the time, that's all I can say without spoiling. What got me to drop it is that sometimes characters are smart and sometimes horror movie s*upid, also I'm pretty sure there are plot holes, nothing significant though. In the latest chaps it turned out to be like One Piece, you know... more>> everbody scrambling and fighting 1 on 1 vs funky opponents, that was it for me. Oh and the translation might be slightly off because sometimes it's confusing, like what did I just read, who did what? Who said what? When did this character appear and when did the scene change? I'm a bit picky for NU standards so this novel will be great for most of you, since it is actually better than most NU novels. <<less

There is no character building, every character is there to glorify the MC. The two characters (one) who survived this horror before are useless while the newbie MC is the one carrying them with her.

The events building is not done well.

The story is somehow irritating.

All in all, I'd give it one star.

Totally underrated! If you haven't read Doomsday Wonderland yet, ask yourself -- why did you read that last tr*shy cultivation novel? Why did you plod through that s**** isekai harem barf-fest?

Okay, now calculate your wasted time and cry over how it could have been spent reading a novel with ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?

Yes, that's right - a mainstream, action, cultivation/game-element Chinese web novel with a character arc! Setbacks!! A protagonist who struggles, who achieves meaningful victories!!!

Please read and give this story a boost. The world is fantastic, the powers are funny... more>> and clever, the twists are suspenseful, the action is heart-stopping. Read read read read read read read read! <<less

Many people probably don't like this for three reasons:

  1. It's not in an ancient setting.
  2. The MC don't scheme enough (well, in my opinion she's trying to save her ass first before plotting to destroy someone's life).
  3. The MC is not overpowered (yet).
The story is written in a western kind of way, where the MC slowly becomes stronger. It's not a one day kind of thing-- not even monthly kind of thing. She grows stronger every time she jumps to a new post-apocalyptic world from an old one. It's exhilarating to read a... more>> story where you don't know what will happen to the MC (since she's not so OP, she's a realistic kind of smart) and exciting to read when the MC successfully lives.

The phrase at the start of the description made me feel the MC is so so so idiotic at first (because look! She can't decide if her bf is truly trying to kill her or not!) but somehow I got over it lol.

It's worth a try and I love it. A breathe of fresh air among the mainstream chinese literature nowadays.

P.s. I just want to say how the description, "Doomsday Wonderland is a novel filled with subverted tropes, non-OP characters and a female friendly label which offends all politically correct fanatics" made me laugh. The story had just gone waaaaaaay beyond the norm. <<less

This is such an underrated novel. Please ignore the low ratings, because its definitely worth giving DW a try.

If you're tired of:

-slapstick drama with female leads taking revenge on their sister, mothers, or whatever, and obtaining the op handsome ML with no story substance whatsoever.

... more>> -martial arts/ cultivation guys who have like 20 women in their harem just cause why not.

Then I recommend this story to you for a breathe of fresh air. The protagonist is a badass female. There's no romance, good action, a real story line, and actual side characters WITH individuality. I've read some comments saying there's none but that's so not true, the further you read the deeper everything gets and you'll come to understand the plot.

This is my top favorite web novel at the moment. It's honestly very unique and has elements of horror, gaming, scifi, and just everything I look for in genres. Highly recommend. <<less

I have found a new top favorite: Doomsday Wonderland. And there are many reasons as to why.

First off, this is my first sci-fi post-apocalyptic Chinese novel. I don't know what the other Chinese ones out there are like, but this is definitely nothing like the sci-fi English ones I've read so far (Hunger Games, Divergent, The Darkest Minds, Maze Runner, etc.). The reason I first fell in love with those cultivation and reincarnation novels was for the reason that they were new and original in their setting and ideas and... more>> characters. But after reading so many of the same kind and beginning to grow bored, someone recommended this diamond to me.

The beginning of the story was a bit slow, and at times, I wanted to wring the MC's neck because she was such a... noob. She wasn't smart right away like our assassin empress MCs who already lived a previous life full of experience. It's more like she's living the life that shaped those assassin empresses into the sharp diamonds that they became. Over the course of the story, she goes from making s*upid beginner mistakes like trusting too easily and refusing to kill enemies who might bring her trouble later to becoming a powerful foe that could make any transmigrator or reincarnator make a run for their money.

After reading so many palace and entertainment industry novels, some of the schemes get old and you can begin to accurately predict them. It doesn't mean they aren't exciting but just less so than back at a time when you were new to them and sitting at the edge of your seat, wondering what exactly the MC had up her sleeve. Here, it's a completely different setting with a fresh set of adversaries who are trying to survive in their new worlds like they are in the hunger games and not in the back courtyard of the palace with scheming concubines. That means a whole new and different kind of scheming/planning to look forward to. No plot or character is repetitive or makes you think you've already read it earlier in the book.

A big factor that makes this story more exciting is that the characters have powers and special items that grant them abilities. They are atypical and unique, not like the usual super speed or mind reading or fire powers we see. Instead, there are things like being able to store items in cards, kicking people far into the sky as if they were Team Rocket, turning a cucumber into a giant green snake, putting people on an invisible treadmill that will keep them running in the same spot, making someone fall for you with a single laugh. The more OP a power seems, the more limitations it has, which makes the stakes a whole lot higher. The MC's power seems a bit useless compared to others' in the beginning, but the further it gets into the story, the more it develops and shows potential in becoming something deserving of OP status with fewer limitations.

Be warned that there are horror elements and gore within these chapters. I'm not really the type for either but mixed with the action, mystery, twists, and characters I'm already attached to, I quite enjoyed them in here. Expect a LOT of twists, as nothing is simple in this book. People who you will think are friends or allies might turn out to be traitors the whole time, for all you know. You won't see them coming, and believe me, I've been there.

Now about romance. I'm not going to lie. There is no male lead so far and no indication of any romance, but before you drop this book before even picking it up, hear me out. What do you define as romance exactly? Kissing? Hugging? Sweet words? Sex? The story has none of these. But what it does have is many great interactions between the MC and individual hot, powerful guys. No guy is alike or flat like in those average cultivation novels.

Small spoilers on some of the different types of guys she'll encounter:

Spoiler

You have an extremely powerful sharp-tongued guy with a katana who is soft on the inside and loves sweets; he becomes her strict mentor of a sort at some point.

A handsome, drunk actor for a companion who is sometimes reliable and sometimes not but can be counted on to want the best for the MC and occasionally surprises everyone with his ruthless inner genius; when one of her crimes catch up to her in the form of pursuers looking for her, he's the perfect person to throw them off her trail with his smooth acting.

An evil, petty, extremely powerful big boss who has blacklisted and hunted the MC for years for doing something small to humiliate him years ago; he became a favorite of the general readers after he allied with her in one arc instead of chasing her down.

A mysterious blond guy who has a black belly of schemes; he's one of the most handsome ones that give you the shivers whenever he begins talking.

[collapse]

None of these guys get romantic with the MC in terms of intimate stuff like loving eyes and kissing and touching (in a post-apocalyptic world, there's no time for that if you want to live). What they all do is acknowledge (or at least deep down in their heart) that she's someone who could rival them in strength and power. Because there is no real male lead so far, that also leaves us readers to ship the MC with whoever and all we like without the fear that our ship will sink to the main one. No cannon ship is going to stop us, not even from shipping the hot guys with ourselves since the MC hasn't already taken them.

If I were you, I'd quickly add this novel to my reading list. It's definitely worth it. <<less

Edit: Might update the review later if it gets any better.

The best way to describe this novel would be exceptionally average. Other than the first 2 or 3 chapters where the characters are given some spotlight, they have very little depth and are pretty bland with no real personality. On the other hand, they don't have any annoying garbage cliches either.

The grammar and writing is actually pretty good. Other than a few really dumb mistakes every now and then, I'd say that this is probably this novel's strongest point.

The story... more>> is not bad but certainly not great either. There's a few random things thrown in for no reason like stat points which we see a few times early on and then not at all and some other seemingly arbitrary events like pocket dimensions. Minor spoiler:

Spoiler

The fact that all worlds become apocalyptic for no reason and people hop worlds every 14 months is also pretty random. They might explain why this happens later, but for now it just feels like it's thrown there because the author thought it would be a cool setup but didn't think it through.

[collapse]

Honestly, the story feels kind of discontinuous in the sense that one thing doesn't really lead to another. It's pretty much the MC walking around wherever on a whim with no actual end goal in mind, and it doesn't look like the story is really going anywhere. The author throws in random things the characters need to overcome without any real goal behind them other than "hey it would be kind of interesting if this happened".

All in all, it's okay. Not bad enough to drop, but not good enough to be excited for when the next chapter comes out. You could certainly do worse, but there's better out there. If you like the apocalyptic genre with game elements, I'd suggest reading Reincarnator. If you like the apocalyptic genre in an urban setting, then maybe try Global Evolution. If you read either/both of those and still want more, then maybe give this a shot. <<less

This is a thriller-type survival novel with multiple worlds/species/civilizations. Translation is 10/10.

The beginning arc seems like it's a pure survival/apocalypse arc, but more and more unexpected things happen, so I wouldn't categorize it completely as a pure survival novel. Some challenges also have a bit of a horror theme.

This is really quite an amazing story, that only keeps getting better and better.

... more>> The MC is one of the best I've ever read!

This is one of the extremely rare stories where the MC has good morals/human rights awareness and generally maintains that despite the ruthlessness around her. Her morals don't make her s*upid, rather, it's more of a slight hero complex in protecting/rescuing innocents or kids.

The side characters are very fleshed out as well, including the enemies! Some unexpected enemies become allies and vice versa. It's not predictable at all.

Spoiler

The side characters have their own backgrounds and mysteries, and even the MC's friends have their own goals that do not necessarily align with each other.

It's not a one-dimensional world where the MC's friends are 100% good and supportive. It's also not one of those stories where you can judge the character by its cover.

[collapse]

The character development, world-building, puzzle setups, and the absolutely weird sh*t that happens only get better and better.

In the beginning, I was a bit thrown by some of the seemingly super random and a bit scattered new ideas that kept popping up, but the author was able to flesh them out and connect them together, so everything made more sense as the story continued.

Spoiler

So far, I'm relieved that there's not much romance. C-novel MLs tend to be 100% perfect or better than the MC at everything so I did not want to see any of that making MC's hard work pointless.

[collapse]

Don't be intimidated by the amount of chapters and don't look down on them! Every new world is complex and handled carefully.

This is not one of those light fluffy novels where everything is filler and nothing happens after 500 chapters. The pacing is fantastic (neither slow nor fast) and the quality is maintained throughout. <<less

While this story has it's flaws, it's still an enjoyable binge worthy read.

The MC is a headstrong, battle smart heroine who has very enjoyable moments of badass level up. Her main flaw is that she doesn't analyse a lot initially and that can cause a lot of trouble for her. She does have moments of vague s*upidity (which is ofc frustrating) but generally, when trouble hits her instincts are great. The best moments from her are when shes under immense stress and has to protect a bunch of people, she... more>> really shines then.

The side characters and plot twists and the most fun part of the novel. As the arcs progress, it just gets more fun. I particularly like the grey side characters who may appear friendly but are definitely powerful and have unknown intentions. The abilities and special objects have quirky names that don't take themselves too seriously. The novel does create lots of tension and drama though.

All in all, despite its flaws it's an easy read and really makes you want to read more. The novel really gets into it by the end of the first world, where shes with new companions. I feel like her initial companions were the most boring interaction and story wise so if you can get past them, the story should perk up. <<less

Now that we are reaching the 500th chapter mark, I think it is time to drop my review for this.

I've been actively reading this in Webnovel since March and was surprised that I was able to binge read several chapters for weeks before reaching the latest update. I dived into this without any knowledge about the genre and was just searching for a good read with many chapters released and without having romance as the main theme. It was honestly surprising how hooked I got. It started with "one more... more>> chapter" until the next thing I noticed is I'm reaching the third volume already.

To simplify this novel: it is basically an apocalypse survival genre where we jump from one world to another with a different apocalyptic scenario (for example ㅡ imagine jumping from a vampire-centered world to evil fairies infested world) after a certain period of time.

PROS

  • MC is not s*upidly OP. She goes from weak to mediocre to kinda okay. It took almost 400+ chapters for her to fully understand her stronger power. It's basically a slow build.
  • World building is amazing. Each world is explained quite well and the abilities of the people that MC encounters and the items with various uses are explained quite well. There are minimal repetitions and even the most mundane thing can be used as a description for the items and abilities.
  • Not OP-centric. We have recurring characters. MC is basically never alone and she builds relationships with others well. Some character developments we have there.
  • Great plots for each volume. Honestly, each world has caught my attention and I rarely stay this long because I get bored easily.
  • Chapters are actually long which gives the impression of reading an actual book. Some are detailed which may not be other's cup of tea but this is perfectly fine for me. Makes the wait for new chapters a satisfying read.
  • No romance. (Could this be a con?)
    Spoiler

There are recurring potential ML but well that's just the readers thinking that they are the ML lol. I personally have my favorite potential ML and is waiting for his return lmao.

    [collapse]
CONS

  • A lot of people are praising the MC to be smart, but I'd like to say that is not the case most of the time. Even the author acknowledges the lack of brain power for MC which is why I think she is always around other people who can think better than her.
  • (Not so con actually.) Translations are slow. We are only at 500 but the original is still on-going and is at 1300+. Maybe because this is not paywalled in WN but there will always be updates per week.
  • This is catered for female audience so obviously male readers might find this lacking and maybe s*upid even.
It is really disappointing to see this low star reviews because some didn't even bother to finish the first world. The premise is really interesting but you don't actually see the real action until later. I guess this is more for long time readers who will stick to it until the end. Do not hesitate to try it! This book is really amazing and you will love Lin Sanjiu and the gang! <<less

At first I really thought it was a simple sci-fi apocalypse, you know, how to survive kind of scenarios, more killings, etc, HOW WRONG I WAS. But still, it's fantasy adventures will hook you up with its great plot, character development, and the deceitful romance tag (there's a romance tag in the webnovel app I'm using) HOW WRONG I WAS AGAIN, but it's okay. THE ROMANCE DOESN'T MATTER. (Though I'd love to see her being taken care of by the male lead.) I love the translations as well as it's... more>> greatly/neatly done and easier to understand. <<less

As the story progresses, I find myself more drawn in.

The MC is extremely likable unlike some MCs that just face slap everybody and is OP from the start, or some MCs that are literal airheads. She is calm and collected, has wits, but even she has times where she doesn't know everything, and that's realistic. She also doesn't simply come out of everything unscathed, even having some times where she thinks she's on death's door. Her power-up progression is nice and not too crazy. Of course, being a MC, she... more>> does have plot armor but she struggled to get to where she is even with it.

Personally, the plot was a bit slow and confusing during the first 20 or so chapters due to so many different terms flying out, but once you read more, you start to understand a lot of it and get excited when a new term is introduced instead. The introduction of certain supporting characters were really thought out, sometimes I expected them to be fodder or just an enemy, then the author surprises me by making them a great companion instead.

Highly recommended if you are tired of OP-from-the-start MC, interested in some horror/apocalyptic elements, and a plot that gets better with each arc. Novel is underrated even at 4 stars. <<less

I dont know why people give low rating, I find them fun and have minimal stress. Its like a summer block buster - not much meat, but plenty of excitement.

I really liked it at first but somehow it started to stray away from the apocalypse theme and became more like a weird myriad worlds of distopia themed thing instead. I initially thought from both the summary and the beginning chapters that she would start in a new apocalypse each time and have to fight to survive.
Spoiler

The whole point of searching for a agent/guide or whatever it was called at the beginning was to get a pass enter another world before it's apocalypse started and get an advantage of being able to get supplies and information before others.

And yet it's like everything gets thrown on it's head as soon as the first arc ends or rather toward the end of the arc things just get weirder and weirder. I don't hate the story but I was a bit disappointed with the way it progressed. I felt like the author had probably strayed away from their initial premise or they just didn't lead into the later chapters very well.

I'll probably still read for a while to see if it improves, I want to like the story since it's got a female main character with a resilient personality. My only real complaint is just the disappointing plot progression that mostly feels like it doesn't fit my initial expectations. I guess this is why it's called a "wonderland" because there are some rather bizarre things.
