Dahlia was the eldest daughter of the Duke of Stewart, one of the four great dukes of the Woodria Kingdom. Soon after her mother died of illness, her father married Andrea, a commoner. Moreover, they already had a child named Betty, who was just a year younger than her.

In order to establish her position, Andrea planned setting up schemes against Dahlia, the legitimate successor of the Duke. Betty, on the other hand, grew up always wanting anything Dahlia owned.

Hence, the fight between the three of them ensued.

It's not a bad story. But, rather than a proper novel, this feels more like a journal or the plot summary. Most of it is written from Dahlia's POV. There's also a few chapters from some extras or supporting role's POV to make the story clear. There's not much details of events happening. Like, Dahlia explains how or why things happen but she doesn't go into small details.

About Dahlia, our MC, she's pretty smart and has common sense. But her childhood was dark and shitty so she's a bit apathetic... more>> and traumatized in the first part of the novel which slowly gets better after she leaves her family. She actually stands up for herself later and has the goal to get stronger. (Well, the ML still protects her in big matters but it won't be a Japanese novel if he didn't so 😕)

Now, the antagonists, they're idiots. They lack basic common sense and their thinking process makes me disgusted and speechless. But, everyone else also knows that. The extras just don't care cause it's not their family that's s*upid. The MC also thinks they're s*upid but she was very young and didn't have any power so she suffered in their hands. Now, the reason nobody does anything to them is because they have powerful background and to maintain political balance which I believe is a pretty good reason.

There's an ML but barely any romance. Cause after ML appears and MC leaves, there's a 4 year time skip and after that we already see them engaged. Their interactions are sweet but that's all, no actual romance.

Overall, it's a pretty short story with a good enough world building and characters. There's no obvious plot holes so just turn your brain off and enjoy. A 3.7/5 ig. <<less

A fast read that tries to combine a few genres and does an interesting job of it. Somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, 5 stars because it's unusual, 4 because of flaws winning out

The story initially frames itself as a classic evil step mother/ step family and branches off into the villainess genre and deconstruction of the genres in light of historical reality. It has boxes to check and manages to check off most of them. For the wicked step family, the reader has to care about the victim and... more>> despise the family. This is accomplished quickly and dramatically. For the villainess genre, the reader needs to believe in the charm/reality warping ability of the "heroine". This really isn't accomplished and much of what's tried is done by simply taking characters out of the picture for what's a short story. The realistic elements mostly work even though there are big gaps. Finally the ending is rushed and less than satisfying. It's just not linked into the chain of events in a solid way.

Bottom line: despite the flaws it;s still a good quick read <<less

I mean... it's okay. I guess? The other reviewer saying it's more like a journal than a story, while the statement itself isn't entirely accurate, that's exactly what it feels like when reading this. A lot of terrible things happen to the protagonist in the first half, but because she killed her emotions, we can somewhat justify why we don't actually feel much, as the lack of details make sense due to her state of mind. But even during the face slapping and concluding fate of... everyone, protagonist or villain,... more>> we feel nothing.

Maybe it would've helped if the villains had some intelligence, but they were extremely s*upid from beginning to end, being caricatures rather than characters. So, when terrible things happen to them, the author doesn't deign to make us aware of their feelings on the matter, skipping over their valid fear and regret entirely, which leads to the face slapping to feel empty in the first place.

Spoiler

Basically, in the last chapter, we got a 'this person died, that person was tortured, and that person allegedly killed himself, while the MC and her first cousin get married (cue Sweet Home Alabama playing in the background) without any emotions presented to us, the readers, at all. We're not even told the father regretted his actions to the MC when he killed himself. For all we know, he could have not been able to tolerate becoming a commoner, or was just assassinated. Nor, for that matter, do we really understand the dynamics between the MC and her cousin. We're only guessing they're in love, but I'm not sold at all. It looked more like a show they put on to anger her enemies than a functioning relationship.

[collapse]

Basically, in conclusion, it felt like a fan's old fanfiction they wrote ages ago and finished quickly because they got bored with it, and to this day feel embarrassed by, deleting it five years down the road after the second-hand embarrassment from their younger self becomes too much. <<less

Short summary of the novel

FL is daughter of neighbouring countries' princess and Duke of present Kingdom. Her mother died when she was young. Her father had a mistress with a daughter (whom is assumed to be Duke's daughter). After fl's mother's death, the came to live with her and she was abused in name of discipline. She was avoided by servants to fend for herself. She was even send to convent for some years.

So pitiful 🥺

She came back to mansion when she was proposed by a marriage with second Prince... more>> of the kingdom as she was of Nobel birth (father is Duke and mother is princess of neighbouring Kingdom). The second prince was expected to be the king as first prince was sick🤢. They frequently met in her home. But then, the prince fell for the lies of her half sister (that she is shaming her because of her low birth and bulling her). She lied and foolish prince believed her. So s*upid 🙄

FL was sad that everything she has is stolen by villains (stepmother and stepsister). She was abused by wipping to even get scars in body where clothes were covered🤕

This is when her maternal cousin prince (ml) comes and takes her to her maternal kingdom. She feels anxious at first that the love from her cousin ML (first to the next throne) and her uncle (who is the present king and ml's father) will vanish. But they convince her otherwise. Her paternal family connection is cut off, the second prince engagement broken, and new engagement with the ML is made.😄

She stays in her maternal kingdom for a few years and taught and live well. She goes to her paternal Kingdom as foreign exchange student with ml. Villains meet a bad end due to poisoned words and foolish attitude. (Stepsister hanged as punishment, stepmom wipped to death, Duke found dead probably by su*cide, second prince send far away). The black bellied ML makes them pay.

Finally FL and ML get married and have children and live happily ever after 😁😁 <<less

Rather than a Cinderella, it's more similar to those cliche daughter abandoned by family but got help from mother's side and rose up and face slap that family.

I don't understand the leaning-to-bad side review tbh. I mean it isn't a masterpiece but it wasn't bad.

Although the story wasn't detailed but imo a story doesn't honestly need to word by word explain each scenarios and feelings especially when it won't add any point to the value of the story and already obvious. I was very happy with the pacing. It didn't... more>> stretch the story like most KR and JP novels do. It literally just shows us what we exactly need to read to understand the entire story. I could feel my blood boiling in the first half and feeling happy with the face slap.

Athough, I feel like they could have done more with the face slap (wasn't enough lol). The romance part tho indeed need some fixing. It's also in a way just a short slap, where the story boils your anger and release them at once.

As I said before, this is not a masterpiece -at most a great quick bite story if you want to put your frustation into reading a novel. The characters here are very one dimensional tho can't say unrealistic as there are people who refused to go out of their bubbles and doesn't make sense.

If you came looking for just a romance story, not the best one but if it's a telling of a lovers story but more focus on the background than them -then this one for you. <<less

This story felt a bit boring, perhaps because the narrator was an expressionless MC. Well, it didn't mean that she never feel sad or angry, it's just that she failed to express it into words so everything she said seemed flat to me.

Also, the pace was a bit too fast. I didn't mind skipping a bitter and sad scene but the author shouldn't skip the relationship's growth between ML and MC. I mean, in the previous chapter, they're still purely cousins but then in the next chapter, they're already enganged... more>> to be married so I didn't blame MC's ex for being dumbfounded when he heard it because I was also dumbfounded myself.

And the villainess (yes, I talked about you Betty) was like a jumping clown and had a severe delusion of grandeur. She was also so dumb until I didn't feel any satisfaction when she got her retribution. Maybe this novel would be better if it had a proper villainess. <<less

It's ok-ish? Feels more like a plot summary than an actual story. Also since most of this is from Dahlia's pov and she herself doesn't let her emotions show it feels boring.

Also why the ending felt off. There wasn't any satisfaction cause MC herself didn't get much satisfaction out of it.

Spoiler

also wtf is up with her getting married with her first cousin. Yikes. That's just inviting a whole slew of genetic disorders to show up in the bloodline
