Ye Yao found out that he was in love with his friend Lu Xun.

They ate and slept together, were almost inseparable, and were each other’s best friends.

From what he has learnt over the years, Lu Xun is a straight man of steel, and because of his good looks, he is very attractive to guys with a male s*xual orientation.

Whenever such a person appeared, Lu Xun would cut them off without a second thought. Even if he was a good friend before, he would still blackball them without any hesitation, keeping them completely out of his world.

To preserve this friendship, Ye Yao minimised the time he spent with Lu Xun, a relationship that should not have been discovered.

Lu Xun wanted to travel alone with him, but he refused.

Lu Xun wanted to take a bath with him, but he refused.

Lu Xun wants to sleep with him, but he still refuses.

……

Ye Yao managed to reduce his contact with Lu Xun, but one day, when he was alone at home, he was blocked by Lu Xun.

The man who was always cheerful and sunny to him now had a horrible dark face and pinned him against the wall.

“Hiding from me?” Lu Xun laughed coldly, “If you can’t give a proper reason …… you can’t blame me for following you every minute of every day.”

Ye Yao confesses in part.

He tells Lu Xun that he likes men, but does not say that he likes Lu Xun.

Lu Xun, who shunned homosexuality like a snake, gave him exceptional treatment.

Not only does he not stay away from him, he takes him to the movies and tries to straighten him out.

“What’s so great about smelly, hard men, it’s disgusting.” Lu Xun put his arm around Ye Yao’s shoulders and pointed at the man working hard on the computer screen with one hand, saying to Ye Yao, “It’s hard and smelly, let’s not like men anymore, okay?”

Ye Yao was silent for a moment: “You’re right about everything, but …… I’m the one down there.”

Lu Xun was stunned, and then fled.

Ye Yao thought his friendship with Lu Xun would end here, but at one of the social events, in the darkness, he was wrapped up in a familiar embrace.

The usually casual voice was now full of anger: “How dare you let another man touch you?”

**

Ye Yao finally understood.

Lu Xun, who was straight, had become gay without Lu Xun knowing it himself.

Super sweet. The main pair is so freaking lovey dovey even before they officially become a couple. Very reminiscent of The Daily Life of Being the Campus Idol’s Fake Boyfriend which is one of my fave BL novels.

Although it takes a while for the ML to find out his feelings for the MC extend wayyyyy beyond friendship, from his POV you can see that he’s pretty much always been in love with the MC because he wants to do things like wear couple outfits, give the MC all his money... more>> to spend, drink out of the same bottle, sleep together in the same bed, hold hands, and pledge to both remain unmarried so that the two of them can live together for the rest of their lives. After they get together he becomes even more hopelessly in love with the MC to the point of obsession but like the other reviewer mentions, he never becomes a complete yandere because he’s eventually able to restrain himself with the MC’s patience and guidance.

I loved how supportive everyone in their lives were when they came out. Lol I died when the MC’s parents were like wait you guys weren’t already dating this whole time?

Overall, I’d highly recommend this. <<less

This won't be for everyone but it's certainly right for me.

Don't you love when two people entangle in a codependent relationship and by the time one of them realises hey this is kinda fruity it's way too late and they try to separate but the other codependent half is like??? Why??? And triggers the inevitable fallout of their relationship into either properly separating or acknowledging what's always been brewing and make it official?

If you like it, you'll love this novel. It hits every spot of realising how much these two... more>> idiots have entangled themselves and the exquisite tension as the more emotionally aware one realises this can't go on.

Do you want to read about unhealthy relationship navigated in the healthiest way they can? Lu xun is extremely obsessive and possessive to the point where even Ye Yao is stunned. Before they're together and after, Lu xuns thoughts center so heavily around Ye Yao it's stunning he hasn't locked him up. Even ye Yao acknowledges it but he puts his trust in Lu Xun and decides to let him discuss it openly instead of hiding in the dark obsessing. Love me some healthy unhealthy relationships.

Anyways, read it. It hits every spot.

Spoiler

is Lu xun homophobic. Yes? It's complicated. They do give backstory where his grandpa basically brainwashed him into being homophobic and it sounds like it traumatised him. He's pretty anti gay except when it comes to ye Yao. Personally I think he's just an extreme demi-s*xual where the emotional connect trumps all and Ye Yao was the only one he ever connected with. Like he seems anti-any relationship that is not with Ye Yao so make of that what you will. I personally think that he's sorta homophobic but also like if ye Yao tried to hint at him sleeping with a girl he also would be disgusted lol

I loved the summary, it absolutely looked like something I would read!

I can totally respect it if this is a story that people like, but looking at all of the positive reviews, I'd just like to point out the my personal cons about this story.
Spoiler
  • The ML is genuinely homophobic, he's been raised to think that gay people are dirty and infested with STD's. He literally feels nauseous just thinking about gay people.
  • The side characters are all super bland, the story revolves solely around the MC and ML.
  • The ML is crazy. And I mean crazy, he gets himself hurt on purpose just to get the attention and pity of MC. He stalks MC. He smells MC's clothes in secret.
  • The MC doesn't seem to actually know ML that well, yeah sure he loves being around ML and knows what ML likes. But the MC never even found out how obsessive ML was until later on, and he was scared (like any normal human being would be). At one point it escalates to MC thinking that ML might hurt him. I don't understand why MC stayed with ML, he's so deranged.
  • The story is completely revolving around misunderstandings. The MC misunderstands ML's sincerity. ML misunderstands MC as some virg*n mary untainted saint. These two clearly know nothing about each other, they only love the image they have of each other.
  • Everything is resolved really quickly, besides the main plot of "I love him, he doesn't love me. He loves me, I don't believe him."
[collapse]

Overall, if you're okay with an extremely homophobic and unhinged ML. Go for it!

It's a light and easy read, you don't need to think much. Just because I didn't like it doesn't mean you won't like it. The summary is extremely accurate, its literally an exerpt from the story.

There's no harm in trying it out for yourself.

Homophobic (actually gay for Ye Yao) Lu Xun x Gay with internalized h*mophobia Ye Yao

What is with these danmeis that are supposed to be about a gay relationship being so homophobic about it?

Its mentioned a few times about the gender being wrong, implications of other gays aiming for Lu Xun being predatory. Moroever, Yan Xin who pursues Ye Yao just ends up being a gay creep. What a great representation of gay people wow. Literally other than the MC and ML all other gays are potrayed as disgusting people who... more>> only want s*x and are slimy.

Not gonna lie if Lu Xun exists irl he should be dropkicked immediately. It was very weird because the side charas who are mostly uninvolved are like chill with them being gay when they thought LX and YY were dating. The parents of both characters are also fine with it so why you gotta be so homophobic Lu Xun? It doesn't seem like he will try to learn to get better either damn. (On a side note Lu Ming, Lu Xun's cousin is pretty homophobic as well)

Tbh the portrayal of gay people within this novel is very upsetting. Although in the end Lu Xun realized he doesn't wanna be separated with Ye Yao, hence realizing he is gay, he is still very much homophobic. Also pleasepickth made some great points regarding the ridiculousness and toxicity in LX and YY's relationship. <<less

This is actually a hard read for me, , despite the fluffiness, the misunderstanding is... oh gosh! So stressful, ,

Not like it's not common in romance story, , I deeply understand how frustrating reading a drama romance is, , so I won't linger to it too much, ,

About being homophobe ML, , it's pretty nostalgic lol, I was like that too, ,

Spoiler

I remember, one time I search for cultivation novel (boy x girl of course, I haven't read any bl at that time) I found MDZS, ,

At first I tho the cover is weird but I don't think too much of it, , all characters in ancient china has long hair, ,

After a few chapter until the bathroom scene where Wei Ying peeped on Lan Zhan, , finally I realize it's a BL, , need to check from first chapter again, , lmao

Knows it, I am so disgusted and unbelievable by myself so decisively erase it from my library, ,

Three years after that, , I put MDZS back in my library, , I read it after finishing the 700+ chapters of LMW

[collapse]

After become fujoshi, my way of thinking is rapidly increasing, , I got more friend and release myself from my bullied past, ,

Btw my first BL is Quick Wear The Face of The Devil, , tho still not finished cause I am bored mid-way 😂

All of my rambling in here just me want to tell my story, , don't mind this review too much 🤣 <<less

Personally, I'm a sucker for Yandere types of gong, especially if it is to their love rivals. I dare to say it is a guilty pleasure. Don't misunderstand, I also love it when a relationship is healthy and treat eachother as equals, understanding that communication is key and respecting the other's wishes, but sometimes, I just wish to read a yandere-ish story every once in a while where the gong is a complete simp for their person of interest (as long as it's not the mu*derous type of simping, if... more>> you get what I mean). This story, right here, fills the bill for what I want.

From chapter one, we can see that the pairing have quite a chemistry, having been friends for a long time. But just as it says in the summary, and as one would expect of such a long lasting friendship, feelings arise in a moment. We are barely starting, and I love how quick the translation is advancing; however, I do believe that it would be convenient for the translator to edit the chapters a little because there seem to be some mistakes in verb tenses and punctuation, as well as the expression and explanation of certain scenes that sometimes make the text a little confusing, as well as the use of pronouns. Dunno if the translator is MTL-ing this story, but still, it would be good if there could be some edition in order to make it more understandable for people who are not completely fluent in English. Just saying.

If you want a story with a yandere gong who doesn't seem to realize why of his possessiveness and is extremely gentle to his shou, then this is the story for you :) <<less

I think the best way to describe this novel is in a simple meme:

Ye Yao: You're the most jealous man I know.

Lu Xun:...

Lu Xun: You know other men?

All joking aside, please take a moment to read this and appreciate the translators hard work, this was quite fun if you're looking for a dense yandere ML x very patient/mellow MC.

As someone who is not really care for yandere MLs I found myself surprised that I did not mind this ML that much. This might be because the ML here wasn't really excessive, just a bit obsessive with a weird smelling kink and the persistence of a c*ckroach/leech. But he never got violent towards the MC. In fact, the mere thought of hurting the MC, be it emotional or physical, seems like blasphemy in his eyes. Him being an ultra homophobe in the beginning is also excusable to an extend... more>> due to these believes being instilled in him by his grandfather since young that it left him with some sort of trauma.

As for the MC, I did not mind him. He was not weak nor s*upid, not naive either, just a bit dense at times, but still not as dense as the ML who could earn a trophy for being so dense he could rival a diamond.

I was fine with the plot itself. It was exactly as the novel description showcased. And since I started reading the novel exactly because of the description there was no place for disappointment as I got what I came for.

There were a few things that bothered me. But they might just be translation problems. One is that the usage of the wrong pronoun all the time, writing "she" when it's supposed to be "he". And then there is the thing about the gay "hairdresser" who was in love with the ML. They keep emphasizing the dude being the cousin's hairdresser, but he ends up also being the ML's childhood friend which we only found out in the extras. Seriously, the extras themselves confused me, too.

Spoiler

At first I thought it was a flashback. But as the inconsistencies kept piling up I eventually realized that it was just an alternative plotline to show what would have happened if the ML had realized his feelings earlier.

[collapse]

Honestly, I kinda dislike it when novels have many extra chapters as I often find myself getting bored with them. This time I also fought a bit to reach the end, even stopping mid chapter to start and finish another novel in between because I needed a break. But that is a personal problem of mine that I often encounter towards the end of a novel or during the extra chapters. So others will probably have a different experience. <<less

I don't find the mature feeling between the author's word (as stated in NU tag), rather a very childish personality of ML 😅

The novel description is very interesting but got dismay while reading.

Will drop.

Dropped it somewhere in the second half. I was intrigued by the summary since I generally like 'dense MC/ML doesn't realize he's gay and in love with his BFF', it can be very funny in a well-written story. And my judgement might have been impacted by the bad MTL translation, but still found this to be s*upider than I could endure.

I admit that while I love the 'dense gay in denial' trope, I dislike it when a character is obviously gay, yet because he hasn't realized it or come out... more>> of the closet yet, everyone just assumes he's straight. Like the ML in this story, who has never given any girl the slightest bit of attention, yet everyone including the gay MC assumes he's straight simply because he's homophobic (because of course it's not like very homophobic men has ever been overcompensating for something, right?). So even though the ML is so sticky towards the MC that he literally can't bear to be separated from him, the MC still assumes that the ML is gay and that his love is one-sided. Which is just too dumb.

If the writing had been better, I could have overlooked this kind of brain-dead plot and brain-dead MC, but sadly the writing isn't very good either (I've MTL'd plenty of times and even with MTL you can tell whether it's quality writing or not). It's even surprisingly unfunny for a comedy romance.

*Also mini-rant*: I started reading because someone told me the ML was a well-written yandere character - and while reader misconceptions isn't the author's or the book's fault, let me just say this: if you think the ML in this story is a yandere, then you have no idea what a yandere really is. A real yandere would eat the ML for breakfast. This book is just silly fluff and a dense ML who's in denial about his own sexuality. Nothing remotely yandere about him *rant over*

But if you have really low expectations and just want a silly story with some dogfood in the second half, it might be worth reading. <<less

The summary baited me, the first chapter hooked me up, thus I dove into MTL, then.. It was unexpectedly good! Reading the summary, I thought I was gonna read the template black bellied gong with many tricks and mind manipulation, but it was not!

Spoiler

the gong is unexpectedly a fledgling black belly, which is, he didn't have the opportunity nor the reason to be a 'mature' black belly which supposed to be full of schemes. Instead his 'schemes' were cute, like hurting himself a bit so the MC can care for him more. It stopped at a bit harming of himself, since the MC is very understanding and accepting of him, so he didn't have a chance nor reason for blackening

[collapse]

the extras were good. I love seeing their interaction. Contrary to my expectations, there were no noncons, but there were one dubious noncon

Spoiler

It was their 'first' activity, I think they did it, but maybe not, it wasn't clearly stated, just the next morning, the MC was incapable of walking. During the supposed 'deed', the MC was totally drunk, although according to ML mind recap, it wasn't the ML pushing it, instead it was MC who kept on advancing on him

[collapse]

I think I'll keep reading the translation version for rereading. <<less

ok so I wanted to drop it immediately but I felt it is not fair and I had to give it a chance,

I could fairly say that this might be the worst novel I've ever read, just when you think it can't get worse, IT DOES

and here is why: (might contain spoilers idk)

1. I literally hate the "I'm not gay but u r different" (even tho bro acts gayer than all gay ppl) like in the beginning it was kinda ok but seeing how the ML treat... more>> gay ppl as if they monsters was a NO for me🤢 I could easily tell the author has no f*cking idea abt gay ppl and keep offending them in every way possible.

2. The story is bland (so all the side characters) and tbh it was badly written, the main focus is on their relationship and nothing else, it doesn't make sense how things repeat themselves in a boring way that gives me a second hand embarrassment, feels like reading those corny fics written by middle schoolers (Im not sorry)

3. I hate how the MC is described as feminine, being feminine is ok ofc but I feel like the ML was justifying his action bc the MC looks like a woman and he isn't actually gay? Idk it didn't feel right to me.

anyway don't waste your time reading this <<less

Lmao, my take is that the ML's h*mophobia stemmed from a subconscious awareness of his own sexuality.

I'm pretty sure the translation is roughly edited MTL, because it's filled with grammar mistakes, tense shifts, wrong gendered pronouns, and random words thrown in. I hope it improves later on.

Edit: Yeah, DNF at chapter 9. The translation was just all over the place, which is a shame because the ML's so interesting.

I personally like borderline obsessive/yandere gongs so this novel is quite a good read for me.

For others, if you don't like stalker-ish, possessive (I won't really say that ML is yandere, maybe a bit) gong, this is not for you. Just don't read it and then rate it low because the tags basically said it all.

Also, for short novels like this, expect this to focus on the couple with a bit of side characters.

Well at some point Ye Yao started to annoy me. I understand that asexuality almost always overlooked but still. Grown up adult male supposedly straight dont ever think about any girl, don't bother to look at them at all and all day long dream about spending his lifetime with one certain person? Living under one roof, sleeping in one bed? Like seriously? Him being homophobic don't make him automatically straight. It's like saying that if you straight than you SHOULD be homophobic, and that's seriously so wrong. Started very good,... more>> I enjoyed it very much but it ended up with too much drama for the sake of drama for me, can't read it anymore. <<less

The author is clearly ignorant of the definition of homophobic. Homophobic is a person who will purposely degrade/insult a person just because he is gay, and MC does not act like that.

As a gay myself, I have many girls who confessed to me, and I definitely feel disgusted with it. So I can really relate to MC. MC here has "internal h*mophobia" as we call it in the gay community.

I read CG’s translation based on a recommendation and I loved the story

For readers who may object to ML based on other reviews, the MC is not an idiot and notices the ML is being stalkerish and obsessive and decides to test him because MC does not want to get into an abusive relationship. This one of the aspects of the plot I appreciated

It is a warm novel and an easy read. Highly suggested for a Summer beach or lake read

Honestly this is a very hard read for me! It felt like I was having anxiety attacks every second that I continued reading. It has so much angst from the very beginning up until now! Even so I am still able to say I enjoyed reading it.

Definitely a love and hate relationship. The MC and Male lead are a little too obtuse in my opinion, especially the MC and don't get me wrong he has good reasons but damn!!!Someone please tell me when this endless anxiety will end!!

Where do I even start with this masterpiece of a BL web novel... my life has never been the same. Probably the best feel-good, low-stakes material I've read, on the same level with 'Accidentally Married a Man Full of Vinegar', another web novel dear to me <3

This is gonna be a long review (the longest I've written to this date) so please bear with me if you decide to read this (^_^;)

Stuff that I loved:

  1. The intensity of Lu Xun's love for Ye Yao is so astounding. That man would do everything for Ye Yao's well-being. My god. I need a man like him.
    • Spoiler

Lu Xun deciding to challenge his internalized h*mophobia than to live in a world where he couldn't see Ye Yao, talk with Ye Yao, touch Ye Yao... if a man can't love me like this then I don't want it (ToT)

      [collapse]
  2. I love how Ye Yao's character was written.
    Spoiler

I can relate so much to the way he keeps to himself, and how he suppressed his feelings for Lu Xun. As a closeted gay person, you learn to suppress your feelings like it's second nature, which is a double-edged sword: you sharpen your self-awareness and are less likely to wear rose-colored glasses, but at the same time you kinda get numb and find it challenging to be optimistic in your romantic pursuits.

    [collapse]
    • Spoiler

Ye Yao's firm determination in distancing with Lu Xun is so relatable. I personally would've done the same if I was in his shoes.

      [collapse]
  3. I love, love, love how the author wrote Lu Xun's journey in overcoming his internalized h*mophobia and accepting his s*xual orientation.
    Spoiler

Sure, by the end he still has some aversion to other queer men but hey, I'd like to think it's being faithful to his personality of "no one is allowed to get closer to me than I am with Ye Yao unless they're my relatives or Ye Yao's relatives, otherwise they can only be my casual acquaintances"

    [collapse]
    • I see where other readers who didn't like this novel are coming from. For me, I know straight people in my life who reject flirty advances from anyone other than their partner, which is why I don't consider Lu Xun's behavior toxic.
      Spoiler

The author wrote him to be someone with a weird, sharp sense of "this person is trying to flirt" radar, so it makes sense to me.

      [collapse]
    • My opinion obviously is not against readers who have trauma with h*mophobia. Their decision to dislike this web novel is totally valid. I also avoid reading romance novels with r*pe, abuse, and tragic endings since those themes disturb my mental health as someone who's closeted.
  4. I love how the author wrote Ye Yao's
    Spoiler

painful yearning for Lu Xun, and Lu Xun's mental and emotional agony in having Ye Yao hide from him. Man, I read this sh*t twice and I still could feel pangs in my chest everytime I read Ye Yao's and Lu Xun's thought processes of angst *chef's kiss*

    [collapse]
  5. I love how Ye Yao was realistically level-headed for a university student. Obviously, everyone has gotten/will eventually get duped by a fake friend or a deceitful lover at some point in their lives, but I hate when authors write the MC or ML as having little to no common sense at all. It's funny maybe for one or two scenes, but to have their personality written as unnecessarily s*upid with no development turns me away from reading the material.
  6. Ye Yao instantly
    Spoiler

noticing that Lu Xun being secretive and clingy are potential, realistic red flags was so good! What I appreciate is the author not only showing Ye Yao recognizing the issue, but also making sure Ye Yao communicates and addresses them.

    [collapse]
    • Spoiler

You cannot fix problems in friendships or romantic relationships by just identifying them and keeping them in your heart... you have to speak out and listen, and your partner must do the same. It shouldn't be you against your partner, but you
      as a couple

against the problem (or potential problem). This novel beautifully illustrates that!

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

Also, it shows that there's nothing wrong with having kinks as long as you communicate with your partner! Even couples with the same level of s*x drives (which usually decreases the chances of having issues initiating/planning sexy times) still need to communicate!

      [collapse]
  7. This might sound trivial, but I like how
    Spoiler

quick-witted Lu Xun and Ye Yao are! It just helped solidify their romance for me. It's nice to read about romance BL characters who are not only well-written as individuals, but also well-written as a couple. Chemistry is so important!

    [collapse]
Random thoughts:

  • Spoiler

Ye Yao's and Lu Xun's parents being supportive is so heartwarming!

    [collapse]
  • I loved the
    Spoiler

mini-stories (Lu Xun getting amnesia and a parallel universe where Lu Xun's the one who's gay first) but I wish we also got more of Lu Xun and Ye Yao being domestic post-university without the amnesia :P Yes, I know, I'm being greedy...

    [collapse]
Thank you for the translators at Chrysanthemum Garden for sharing this gem with non-Chinese speaking readers! I will definitely read this again and again :)
