Cute and fun story with depth. It was enjoyable with a low level of angst. There are secrets that are slowly revealed that makes you hesitant to put it down.

MC, Fu Li, is super cute and sincere. He is a type of character that makes you continuously root for his happiness. ML, Zhuang Qing, is the standard cold ML but becomes putty under the hands of his lover. However, ML has a unique innate trait due to his dragon race and it is oh so cute when MC unknowingly vanquishes... more>> it time and time again. I won't spoil the fun by naming the trait.

This novel is recommended for a light read with happy ending.

MC is a four thousand year old yao. His wish is to become a civil servant. This is to fulfill a request by his human pet who died two thousand years ago.

MC thought he was a rabbit yao raised by ordinary yaos. However, his elders were actually great/divine yaos. They had raised orphaned MC to be pure and want for nothing. The reason for this is because they had divined MC's fate and each time it had a bad ending. Therefore, they tried to change his fate and led him to believe that he was a rabbit yao. He is actually a Hou, a fiend yao, which was fated to bring catastrophe onto the world.

ML is a mixed breed yao. He is half gold dragon and half human. He falls in love with ML first and becomes jealous of MC's human pet from two thousand years ago. The twist is that ML was actually MC's pet in his past life and had also loved MC. From this first encounter, ML had already changed MC's fate.

Holy F*ck

I knew it had to end somehow but I really really wish we got at least like 30 more extras. It ended quite perfectly but it's one those novels you just wish would never end. This was such a good epic story and I'm kind of feeling depressed at the thought that I won't be encountering one as good as this for quite some time.

I gave it a go because it's a completely translated novel by CG and I always love their translations. Even if I had to keep... more>> entering the password for every chapter lol.

This had so many things I wouldn't usually go for but I was completely and utterly hooked, and all the things I usually avoid blended so well with some things I usually love, that made the entire package something I completely devoured in two days.

I usually prefer yaoi over shounen ai. I also kept thinking this was looking more and more like a romantic subplot type of story, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I usually avoid because I end up a tiny bit unsatisfied in the end. This story overturned all that. It is does not have a romantic subplot, because it's such a beautifully woven romance with solid foreshadowing and plot, that it made me forget I was reading this for the promise of BL initially.

There's comedy, action, adventure, duty, fate, sooo much lore, exquisite pain soothed by perfect sweetness of love.

I sound like I'm exaggerating but I'm just riding the high right now after finishing such a good book that had me giggling one moment and crying the next.

Heartwarming novel, even though the romance starts very late, all the characters are well written and the story is interesting. The ML has loved the MC for 2 lifetimes and is the light that changes the MC’s destiny. Very sweet. It’s funny when the MC always thinks of himself as an elder and wants to protect the ML.

Fu Li, a small, unassuming, harmless little rabbit yao, wakes up after a 2000 year long nap to find that the human world has changed massively, and things that used to be abundantly found in nature during his childhood are now considered precious treasures.

Fu Li, now technically a rich second
-generation yao, cares little for precious stones or gold or secret cultivation refining tools that he has by the dozen. No, his goal is the civil service exam of the human world!

This story has a very humorous tone throughout. Fu Li and his naivety, contrasted by his strong sense of self and morality, unchanged throughout the years and unable to be influenced by evil doers, make him a beloved comrade in the yao-equivalent of the police force. Especially as many ancient fiends and auspicious beasts seem to keep popping out of the woodwork after similarly long naps.

There is a minor overarching plot, and a subtle romance woven into the story, but mainly it's just fun to read about Fu Li going about life like a rich young master, saving people and throwing about precious ingredients and money like it's candy.

Great job by the translator, especially since they have included pictures and explanations about many yao in-text, along with lots of descriptions for internet slang-culture of China.

Pacing is pretty good. A couple of translations from events were a wee bit sudden but it's not a problem. The story has a main overarching goal but it mainly consists of small, interesting events and supernatural encounters in this new human and yaoguai era for our old MC who has been sleeping for 2 thousand years. The very last climax of the story was a bit too quick and over too fast but it got expanded upon in the extras. It's a weird way to write the climax but at least most of the detail is there.

Plot: 4/5

Pretty good. All the characters were very inoffensive and the main characters were quite likeable and interesting. Also, there is this neverending mystery of the backstory of these two characters and especially our MC. We are always finding out new things about their lives before and what happened then? It was quite engaging; I didn't feel bored. Also, I love the layer of lightheartedness and mild humour in the tone of the story. It was definitely a major reason I didn't lose interest.

Romance: 4/5

The romance is one of the better BL ones for me. It wasn't insta love, the ML wasn't overbearing or pushy, the dynamic was different than in other usual BL relationships. The added layer of the supernatural and how this affects the characters was cool. Also, the age vs. Experience factor in the relationship with each other is also refreshing haha. The romance also wasn't heavy-handed or cringey like other BLs. The growing relationship went from pretty subtle to full-blown being together forever and ever.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 4.3/5

I love the supernatural stuff in it. And all the mystery and finding out things that happened thousands of years ago and how it all relates to our characters now. This can only happen when the characters have such long lives as yaoguai.

Characters: 4.2/5

The MC is a very good MC. He's such a mystery at first and you slowly get to know more about him from how everyone else reacts to him and how he reacts to everything else hehe. He is also super likeable to read from. The ML, too, is a different breed from the usual MLs. I like their dynamic.

I don’t know where to start/how to describe my feelings while reading this book. MC is just... kind, innocent, cute and hardworking. He has one goal, and he accomplished it. And ML, his character development, is interesting and heartwarming. The plot is flowing nicely, and the angst isn’t much. The cuteness and fondness are overloaded. Cute, funny, fluffy, light... I love the mix of cultivation and modern world... I loved all the characters, their funny interactions, their dialogues... I loved following the protags and friends on their supernatural adventures... for me, it was a perfect read :)

I am not really a fan of Cultivation novels. Reason being, there is too much stuff going on. Like immortal pills, staff of whatever, sword of whatever, the ability to fly for some reason, and getting struck by purple or whatever color lightning. I’m a simple and logical person, so I never understand some of this stuff. Compared to magic and fantasy which is easy to absorb, I can never absorb cultivation stuff. It is because of all these weird a*s names. And this holds true for this novel. Bro,... more>> I usually can binge read a novel in 1-3 days. This took me two weeks because my brain and eyes were straining from how slow I had to read to be able to understand all this cultivation stuff. There were so many beasts and the translator even left a list of names describing the types of mythical beasts (bless their soul). Anyways even though I did not like cultivation, I don’t hate it btw, I just tolerate it. I really love the relationship the ML and MC shares. Haha, when the MC and ML treats the other like a “child”. It’s because it has something to do with their ages and personalities. That’s why I kept reading. I love the relationship these two share. Oh, I like how ML is supposedly super rich, while MC is supposed to be super poor. Haha.

I enjoy a good OP pairing with well-written stereotypes that get you invested in the couple.

Moments of snorting out in laughter at the MC’s s*upidity cute naïveté and ML’s dead face/warm to MC only ways, then some (mild) emotional tears too.

Revelations were predictable but well-paced, translation was smooth and really enjoyed learning more about the different yaos in the notes. Added to the richness of the story (amidst the backdrop of humanity vs nature in the flow of time yadayada) and allowed some fun tropes to play out.

This is a good slow burn novel. In the beginning, it started out as mostly comedy as we follow the MC who seems like a country bumpkin entering the city for the first time. However, as the story begins to flesh out, be prepared to shed some tears especially at the parts where we know more and more about his family. I like how the author builds up the history and also the world of the spirits/demons. There was one short side story about a soldier and his mother that is really heart-wrenching too. The only sad thing is that there wasn't a full closure on the whole background of the MC's family and some parts were left a little hanging. Its been a long while since I’ve read this. But the spectacular plot and romance still remains in my mind. Every good review for this novel is mostly true. I also barely rate novels 5 stars so there’s also that.

To me is truly five stars. Slow romance, very heart warming and consistent storyline and world building, the end plus extras is also very satisfying. At first I thought it was going to be a sweet silly funny novel, but is actually more on the serious side.

p.s: The MC, Fu Li just lacks a bit of common sense he is not a naïve silly cinnabun. There are no knives flying around and no explicites scenes.

I loved it. I liked all the characters and loved that the MC was stronger than the ML. It was full of fluff and all the misunderstandings were resolved very quickly.

I really like this story! They are adorable especially the MC. I can't get enough of their sweetness.

Everyone has a bit of a back story & they are part of something/society. So it makes the society/environment they are in seems realistic. I like how the author spends a lot of time build the society, scenarios & also the characters feelings. A bit of humor in between suspends/action is good too. I quite enjoyed the story as a whole, but I personally found the building to the ending to be lacking. The extras made up for it tho!

I love, love, love the characters. Every single one of em. All of them were very interesting and for the most part memorable, though you might struggle a little to remember their animal-yao counterparts (no worries because the lovely tl links the definition to the word when required). The villains, the side characters and of course the main couple!!! Everyone was enjoyable to read and learn about <3

I especially loved the MC, Fu Li. Every part of him is just my ideal MC to read about. He's innocent and somewhat naive in human matters specifically in the beginning, but he is in no way physically weak, and he has a strong set of yao morals~ Plus, refreshingly (though I have like the opposite of this, too) he does not fluster away from the ML once he understood the other's intentions towards him ^^

The ML is definitely interesting to read about as well, as his yào-species makes him to be a rather stinky stingy man, but with a heart of gold hidden underneath all those icicles and hard scales.

The plot is relatively simple yet so engaging, I enjoyed reading the story nonstop for days, up until the last 5 chapters where I lost my enthusiasm, though idk if I really do dislike the ending or was I just tired of irl~ but the extras more than made up for it- my heart hurts from having to part with the story now :')

Overall, I really might reread this to reintroduce myself to the characters again in the future. It was a fun read with a little detective work mixed in, thick modern-fantasy elements and many new knowledge of Chinese culture.
