The dead broke small streamer Zong Qi received a random message one day.

[Congratulations! You have received Alpha access to the system, Horror Film Director. Signing actors with potential, come and shoot the film that fits you the best!] Zong Qi: ? tr*sh commercial, deleted

That night, he got pulled onto the set of a horror film and was informed that if he didn’t shoot it… He’ll die.

He was lucky that the actors were all working as hard as they could, and the director only needed to stand around and watch the show.

But because he had been given way too much, Zong Qi didn’t hesitate at all before making his own changes.

Under his false identity was an ‘evil mastermind’ that fought with the actors on everything.

The immoral things he’s done on set include but aren’t limited to–

Personally putting makeup on the ghost, teaching actors how to mess and change the script, exposing himself at crucial times…

People as arrogant as him usually don’t have good endings when their identities were revealed.

What Zong Qi didn’t expect was that instead of the actors joining up for revenge, an unlucky bastard’s whose plans had been spoilt by him countless times appeared instead.

The man took off his glasses, revealing a pair of closed eyes, his face beautiful and cold.

The brush dipped in paint hooked past the young man’s neck, full of danger.

“You dirtied my brush.”

He smirked, drawling, “As punishment, I’ll dirty you.”

The article was mainly about the romance of two people and the system.

There are two kinds of system, one of them is the all-powerful Director system. They literally mean what it was, they are the one who directs the horror movie. Though the movie is real, and the actors would really die.

The other is the Actor system. They are the people who acts in the horror movie. They were given a character card for the movie they were in. For example, if your sexuality is straight, and you got the... more>> gay character card, you need to really act like a gay person.

Because there were like segments in the movie, Act 1, Act 2, and Act 3. When you're acting your given character, it shows you the percentage of your acting, to show you if you've really immersed yourself to the character you're given. If you didn't reach 80% of characterization at the Act 2 (?), you'll die.

That was the settings of the article. The novel actually started a bit slow, like you'll maybe get bored a bit but it really paced itself up later.

And another thing, there is a required requirement before you can get the Director system. You need to be an S-level actor. There are grades of actor, the lowest was grade was E-level, and the highest is S-level.

Zong Qi, our main character, was precisely the ordinary person who inexplicably got the Director system.

Yu Chenxue, the male lead, was the number 1 S-level actor, codenamed, Artist.

That's all I'm gonna say about the two main characters.

Moving on, I really like how the side characters in the article didn't just become 'side characters' or stepping stone to the main leads.

They really characterized themselves throughout the story.

Ningzhou, the ever clueless and ignorant friend.

Xiao Hong, the first ever signed artist.

Araki, the 'mother' and goddess.

Anna, the powerful newbie artist.

I did my best to make the description about them vague as possible, to not spoil anything. I also didn't add some characters because it'll reveal something.

I also like how the system in the article was quite human. We don't want a bad system on us. It was quite user friendly.

Rating this 5/5, suitable for light read, and for people who are looking for a mixed romance and horror, with a comedic undertone.

Bye, QiQi! Continue doing movies, maybe I'll see them one day.

You really planted yourself, Chenxue. (Is this considered spoiler abt their relationship?) <<less

Tbh I expected a bit more from the director system that the MC got. But the dungeons were quite interesting and I especially liked his ghost employees hehe. The supernatural incidents in real life are also very good.

And the ML... I am a real fan of such gentle looking ones but inside indifferent and cold. But I dont really feel that they suit each other. They seem more like forced together through protagonist halo. Just my opinion. And how they comfirmed their relationship was also puzzling for me.

Now about the... more>> part that bugged me most.

Spoiler

When he invited other artists aka. players into the dungeon, the plot, the set and the people and ghosts are already available and enough to scare the sh*t out of them. What is the point in having the director system? He just adds a bit more scare point and boom that was it. Though he gets to arrange his own plot in a dungeon at some point, it was a typical cliché plot that couldnt be more cliché...

[collapse]

This con point probably stems from my high expectations of the director system which is quite the fresh idea, but wasnt implemented like I hoped. But when you ignore the "director" part it is an interesting read.

Even though the pros outweight the cons, I will put this novel on hold for now.
4 stars for me. <<less

Listen, ranging from novels like "The Earth is Online" and "Global Examination" to "Escape the Infinite Chamber", I've read pretty much every Unlimited Flow novel you can find. Let me tell you something as one of the more seasoned readers out there: this novel is a f*cking gem.

The romance between the MC and ML has such a hypnotic element that it doesn't really repel people, even if they're the types to hate on naive MC x "Overbearing" MLs. The MC is actually quite smart, but the ML is a psychological... more>> mastermind (which is kinda ironic cause it caused him to overthink MAJORLY on a hilarious issue) so everytime the ML teases the MC, the MC kinda goes blank. Don't look at the fact that the MC looks undisturbed on the cover, he is actually constantly going through a series of: who am i? What am I doing? Wtf is going on?

As for why I find their relationship to be so interesting:
Did the ML genuinely want to exploit the MC at first? Yes.
Did he also fall into the very same pit he dug? Yes.

The reaction to the ML finding out that the MC was the "mastermind" was hilarious haha--

Spoiler

I actually kinda pity the poor dude who had his three worldviews overturned within a few hours. Everyone, including the ML, thought that the "mastermind" behind the instances would be this overbearing villain wanting to rule the world, but instead our MC just wanted to earn some money to support him and his ghost family.

[collapse]

Like Kassandra said, I love how the side characters were not used as stepping stones, but genuinely modeled out to be realistic beings.

Aside from the minimal angst due to a minor misunderstanding and the MC's grandparent's sad story, I would label this novel to be quite hilarious.

Spoiler for MC's grandparent's story:
Spoiler

In this novel, there are the [players] who are essentially trying to survive all the horror movie copies, and the sole [director], who is trying their best to make a good storyline out of the copies. [Directors] are given instance immunity, so nothing in the horror worlds can hurt them. The grandfather, who was the previous [director] before the MC, was on a mission in the last horror instance to abolish the [player] system so they would not have to suffer through horror movies anymore.

Here's the catch! The last horror instance was one where there was this huge door that would let evil beings come to earth. Their mission was to snatch some sort of seal and throw it into the fairyland river (MTL, not too sure if this is correct) to purify the systems and stop evil things from invading Earth. However, there was this one as*hole who didn't want [players] to be gone and stole the seal while exiting the instance through a sketchy method. The betrayal caused the grandpa to be stuck in this horror instance and continuously sacrifice himself by using his [director] immunity and blocking the door so that the evil things will not get out and he himself wont get hurt. However, every time this happens, the world counts it as a "unsuccessful sealing" so it resets itself. The grandpa had to bodyblock the door over 1700 times and even though he had immunity, he can still feel the pain from being bombarded by the evil spirits behind the door. The only way to truly seal that door was to retrieve the real seal from reality and bring it back to the horror instance. The MC's grandma pretty much sacrificed her life to get the seal back from the betrayer and after the MC became [director], he pretty much did exactly that.

[collapse]

MTL is very easy to read, just do it. I know this cause I hate MTL with every inch of my soul since it destroys the mood so easily, but this is one of the infinitely better ones so don't worry. <<less

Overall rating - 4.3

Not very intense compared to other horror stories, but the plot is unique on its own and interesting. No visible plot holes, the story flows quite smoothly from the beginning to the end, and I really love the ghost side characters. The only downsides (IMO) are that the ML is a bit too OP and the MC is a bit too naive for my liking, and there are not many twists and turns in the plot.

I don't usually give ratings on everything I read but I am... more>> doing this because I feel this novel deserves a better rating than the current average. I've seen better ratings on novels much worse than this. Recommended to give a try. <<less

actual rating 4.5/5 bump it to 5 cause I'm nice

It was pretty good, but the summery doesnt really match the plot, like "switching side at crucial moments" ??

Yeah- I dont think that ever happened

The romance is pretty good.

Good characters as well, just the summery is a bit misleading thats all.

I'm so sad it's a little short. But this is probably one of my fav premise for a novel!

It's interesting enough. The MC's position is like a game dev; he develops, films and make sure everything runs smoothly. While the actors app's perspective is more like an unlimited flow type of story.

It's quite fun and novel - it's not exactly an UF novel, there's alot of wriggle room and freedom with it. It's kind of like a backdoor into supernatural UF. Really cool!!

Not just that, but I also enjoy the... more>> casts of ghosts. The team collected here all have great personalities and are pretty unique. Compared to others (that also involves collecting ghosts) -- the ghost team here are funnier and cute.

Although I'm not quite sure if I like the CP -- I don't necessarily care too much about it. It's just right.

Anyways, the novel is abit short and doesn't expand too much -- but it's still a satisfactory read. Wish I could have more, or at least expand it a little. But it's ok it's better than novels that drags on unnecessarily long. At least this novel touches the end goal and doesn't bite off more than it can chew. I think it's a great novel, highly recommend! <<less
