SUPER SWEET. This novel is just full of feel-good feelings, not just between ML and MC but also between them and side characters.

It's not full of sunshine, of course. There are bad people but author never lingers much on them, not even to face-slap them, which I appreciate.

Some points I liked is how amazing MC's family and friends are! They treasure MC and take no sh*t from people trying to exploit them. Also kudos to ML for introducing MC to some very good people.

Also, ML too has very good family... more>> and friends. And he treats them well, such as

Spoiler

making sure the friend that died from illness in his past life gets proper medical treatment this time around.

[collapse]

Also, you know how sometimes rebirths steal future ideas from other people as their own? Not ML! He purposely "coincidentally" met the guy who had the idea in his last life, and made sure this guy got credit this time too.

ML and MC are super sweet with each other too. They're adorable and filled me with fluff energy, I kept rolling around on my bed from excitement.

Honestly, the only "flaw" I can find from this novel was that ML was too slag in his past life! <<less

This story feels like grooming. An emperor was betrayed by everyone in his harem except one ger who sacrificed his life. The emperor goes back to when he was still a crown prince and vows to protect the ger who saved him.

However, by this point, the emperor has lived a full life once already. He r*ped the ger, but this is a story set in ancient china and he is the emperor, so I guess that's how things were. The ger gave birth for him, but the child became a... more>> casualty in the harem politics. Then the ger was basically isolated. The emperor didn't know this ger at all until after the ger had died. Then he became obsessed with the only person who didn't betray him, but you can't fully understand someone after they've died. At best, he is constructing a fantasy in his mind around this poor ger.

Then, the emperor becomes a crown prince and strategically puts this ger into a position where he can marry him. The ger starts at 13, and the crown prince keeps an eye on him through shadow guards until he can take him as a concubine at 14. He sneaks into the ger's room at night to kiss him, and makes sure to set up frequent run-ins. Then when he finally takes the ger as a concubine, he doesn't have an*l penetrative s*x, but he does do a lot of touching, kissing, and some blow jobs. It is basically s*xual grooming to get the ger used to touches and intimacy.

This is all while the ger only knows him as a crown prince with near ultimate authority. Never does the prince/emperor really try to understand his ger's thoughts and feelings. He conducts background research, and just assumes from there. He never asks the ger directly what he wants. While he does dote on the ger, it almost feels like he is keeping a pet, not a living human being with thoughts of his own. This little ger basically exists to please the emperor.

The power imbalance is far to strong both with the age and with the face that one is a royal, and one is barely a servent. The author does nothing to rectify this imbalance or at least try to make them equals in any way. Because of this, this relationship is in no way consensual.

Again, this is set in ancient china, so the dynamics are different, but I can't read this as fluffy, which the author clearly intends for it to be, without taking into consideration all of this periphery. Even if you ignore the rebirth, this is still a royal taking advantage of an unbelievably innocent and naive ger.

All of this is not to say that I liked the character of the ger much. He is essentially a door mat. Had he been a real person living in ancient china, he culould not survive anywhere, much less the emperor's harem. <<less

i won’t rate it but if you can get past:

1) an icky pedophillic undertone

2) grooming

... more>> 3) suspension of disbelief as to how ML fell for MC and the background story

4) an MC whose only feature is being pure, childlike and naive and loving the MC

this is I guess a sweet doting story and everything goes well for the MC who is protected by the ML

yes this was in the past yadayada but even in ancient china girls only came of age at 15; the novel itself recognised that MC is young and the ML had a lot of “self-control” for holding on till MC was 14/15

anyway I won’t give it a rating but I feel like the pros and cons balanced themselves out making it a neutral read <<less

Story Quality (Plot/Characters/etc.) : 1/5

Entertainment Value: 4/5

I really enjoyed this story. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I MTLed it whole. It's very sweet, very fluffy, and my heart just swells at the sheer amount of pampering 💕💕💕

However, the reason why I gave the Story Quality a 1/5 is because of 2 specific problems. Without these problems, I would have given it a 3/5 for being an average novel.

1. MC's AGE

Spoiler

I am the kind of person who sees fictional characters as completely separate from real people. Here, the MC is only 14 years old when he is taken by the ML as a male bedservant. Although they wait until 16 to have penetrative s*x, the MC has been romantically and sexually (oral, hand) involved with the ML since he was 14.

Personally, I can ignore this as this as I don't think this novel will convince actual 14 year olds to have romantic ties with grown men, nor will it serve as a justification for grown men to think that it's fine for them to date minors.

Neither do I believe that any of this novel's readers will apply its plot to real life in the sense that they will honestly think that it is not unhealthy and immoral for a real grown adult to predate upon and seduce a real minor just because a fictional 14 year-old character was taken advantage of by a fictional grown man who, because of rebirth, either genuinely loves him or at the very least will stay faithful and loving to him in a novel where their relationship does not end up as tragic and toxic because this is a fantasy story world where apparently, trauma just DOES NOT exist.

HOWEVER, I do acknowledge that some readers do not think this way. And personally, I think that the MC's youth is not needed for this story to work. Yes, 14 WAS a suitable age to marry in Ancient China, but this is already an unrealistic story. Gers exist, for goodness' sake. And the plot itself is not really realistic either (a servant with no meaningful connections becoming an Empress without meeting the disagreement of EVERYONE just because the Crown Prince really really likes him? ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE in any real Chinese dynasty).

I would prefer for the author to simply raise the MC's age. Say that 18 is now the age of marriage. Just extend the recuperation period of the poison that the ML takes and extend its harmful effects to also hurting gers, so that he will have a reason to wait two years if that waiting time is truly vital to the plot. ML can still tell his mother that only gers will be unaffected, but this time it'll be a lie. This lie will further cement the ML's affection for MC, as he is willing to lie to his parents for MC. This will also work because neither the Empress nor the Emperor ever bother to consult ML's physician or have ML go to a different doctor to further confirm his illness. They just take his word for everything.

Although, I do acknowledge that while this may be alright for me, this may not sit as well with Chinese readers, the audience that the author actually keeps in mind. It's very common for Chinese novels, movies, and series based on Ancient Times to feature 14 year-old characters as Romance leads regardless of the historical accuracy of their plot, although they do cast older actors for those roles. It seems as if Chinese audiences EXPECT that age no matter what, and that is why those characters are never aged up. Thus, I don't assume that the author is just a shotacon and that's why they made MC underage.

All in all, while I ignored it and pretended as if the MC's an adult so that I can continue indulging myself in all this novel's sugar, I acknowledge that the MC being only 14 IS an issue among readers that CAN very much be solved easily, and I hope that I'm not wrong in assuming that no one will truly apply this novel's plot in their perception of what is alright to do and what is not alright to do in the real world.

[collapse]

2. NEGATIVE IQ

Spoiler

Cannonfodders and White Lotuses are the bread and butter of Chinese webnovels, it's almost impossible to find a book that doesn't include or mention them. Sadly, both of these archetypes rely on those aforementioned cannonfodders and white lotuses to have an IQ lower than -10000.

The MC is kind of a doormat in the beginning of every conversation he has. He does say 'no' and understand how to use logic eventually, but his guard is ALWAYS lowered. It only goes up when the person he's talking to says something that will OBVIOUSLY work against him, after which he will reject his conversation partner, although after their conversation his guard against that person will immediately lower again.

He fails to grasp the subtleties and traps in the words of others. He fails to see other people's intentions. One time, he made the only servant following him return to the Dowager Empress' Palace to get back an item that he left there. While alone (he still has shadow guards that he's unaware of, tho), he meets a crying maid who tells him that her mistress is dying, and he just FOLLOWS HER. The crying maid. Who he DOES NOT KNOW IN ANY WAY. He never stops to wonder why the maid cannot approach any other servant, which, if he does think about, will inevitably lead to him thinking about the identity of the maid's mistress, and whether that woman is someone he would be able to help without getting in trouble. He doesn't even stop to wait for his servant to come back. HE JUST FOLLOWS HER. AND THEN HE BELIEVES THE WORDS OF THE MAID'S MISTRESS. WITHOUT QUESTIONING HER INTENTIONS.

That is only the beginning. The protagonist shows the same blind trust to others and always nearly gets harmed for his trust. Like most White Lotuses, he gets really irritating when he does this.

His s*upidity may be attributed to him being a relatively spoiled 14 year-old, but he doesn't really get that much better even as he ages.

The ML's overconfidence about the death of Li Qinwang is also a little dumb, but it can be attributed to the fact that he's reborn and roughly knows what may happen. Although as someone who had already been Emperor, that change is still kind of impossible.

What the ML is REALLY dumb for is his total lack of suspicion for his harem. The author tries to excuse this as him being too busy to pay attention to his women. But the thing is, MANY emperors are like that. But still, any emperor with a normally functioning brain will wonder why he can't conceive any sons or why every woman who he does get pregnant and up miscarrying. BUT NO. ML doesn't. Because the magical author wand took all of his braincells away.

Speaking of Li Qingwang, DUMB PLAN. REALLY DUMB PLAN. Other villains? NOTHING BUT CANNONFODDERS WITH EVEN DUMBER PLANS.

Basically, the story needs to proceed and have drama somehow. The author, who we can assume only aims to write a casual sweet novel, doesn't really write anything that will make the plot's unravelling seem like a logical progression of actions and decisions, she just goes with the easiest route, which I don't blame her for since she may be just writing this casually.

[collapse]

All in all, really sweet and enjoyable novel full of pampering. Everyone has a negative IQ, which may really take away from your enjoyment of the book as a whole. The MC's age may also put you off. <<less

The story is very warm and gentle. After the first chapter, it is all about sweetness and pampering, with any danger dispelled quickly. I enjoyed it very much. Lin JiaBao is such a loveable person, and it was nice reading about him being loved and being happy.

I understand what triggered many readers according to the reviews, but I can't really slam the gong for what he did it the past life. He was ignorant and selfish and he spent a lifetime reflecting on his mistakes, so when he's reborn, he... more>> is a very different person from the one who'd r*ped the boy in the previous life. And yes, he is kinda obsessed with Lin JiaBao, but as for not knowing him... he did his best to find out as much as possible about him after his death. Lin JiaBao dying for him was one thing, then he turns out to be the only innocent person in the harem who didn't scheme and hurt others, and then there were all those details about his simple and gentle character the gong learns; wasn't it enough to fall in love with? It might start as an obsession but it's clear they love each other deeply and are happy together. <<less

It's actually 4.2 for me, but additional one star because of the low rating.

Although I've been reading danmei for these 2-3 years but this is my first time to write a review because I see the low rating and other reviewers seem to judge this danmei (especially the gong) negatively.

First, well there are the tags and you can decide whether to read this or not. But, the r*pe happened in the last life, while in the present there is no such things. Also, the tag about obsessive love is really... more>> fitting to explain the love of the gong for the shou.

Some reviewers said that the gong is not really in love with the shou. Well, I somehow agree and disagree with that.

Spoiler

I could feel that the gong really treasures the shou (in a way that as much as he could for someone from a royal ancient setting). I could see that the feeling the gong had was rooted from his realization that his "beloved" people actually betraying him and the shou was the only one who actually protected him despite not being favored by the gong. So, in other words it's the combination of guilty feeling and gratefulness. And it became obsession because the gong coudn't see anyone that will treat him like that as well as he has wronged the shou and couldn't paid it back. At least that's how I see it. So yeah, it was not love because of the slowly interaction and such process.

[collapse]

But!! But in the current life, I think the gong is really in love with the shou. How can you not though? the shou is really cute >< I also want to pamper him haha

All in all, I really enjoy this novel. It's very sweet and not bore me at all. I really love how the gong treats the shou and how he planned to ensure that the shou could be legally stand side by side with him. I also really love the shou and how a good boy and coqquestish he is. I really want to hug him and pinch him haha

Though there are things that a little downside for me

Spoiler

1. How young the shou is when he brought to the gong and their first s*xual interaction as well as interc**rse. Like, if this is not ancient setting I would be furious lol

2. The r*pe in previous life, but it was only really slightly mentioned. Also, in the present life the gong really treasures the shou. And well this is ancient setting and ger had low status and the servant couldn't decide for their own life.

3. I feel that the shou's POV was not really shown. Well, maybe because I am actually wondering how the shou perceive the gong in the last life and what will happen if the shou remembers the last life haha

[collapse]

Lastly, I just want to say that remember the setting was in ancient China, the gong is not someone from modern world. He is a pure royalty and a crown prince at that, so... Even though I don't really like him, but well I could understand the way he handles things (at least with how the writer writes it)

Do I recommend this novel? If you want to read something with no heavy plot, this is a good danmei to past the time :) <<less

I have mixed feeling about this novel.

1. I don't like MC at the beginning. He's an as*hole full with utter bullshit. He r*ped ML, ditched him, left him alone in cold palace, and finally making ML die protecting him. All his misfortune and betrayal from his Empress and concubine is payback for all of his disgusting treatment for ML.

2. But at the same time he realize ML is the only one who cared for him and protecting him with his own life. So it doesn't matter if his feeling wasn't... more>> actually love, but he did try his best to make ML live a happy and fulfilling life. MC stay true to his word until the end, did lots of thing just to make sure ML won't be sad.

Spoiler

Finally he got everything he want; ML by his side, his unborn baby + bonus batch of babies, his parent and little brother living a happy life

[collapse]

3. MC is too much. I like a decisive and ruthless Gong, but MC is beyond that.

Spoiler

He's a cold hearted person. Only his parent, lil bro and ML who can make him smile. But the rest of him is totally heartless. He won't even bat an eye while killing every single person who makes his family and ML suffered in his last life. He even easily disposed everyone who make a bad comment about ML; a random son of imperial court member, ML's uncle family, his concubine, his brother's wife, and his father's concubine little brother.

[collapse]

Despite an annoying and disgusting start, this story is sickeningly sweet and full of dog food.. <<less

Note: 'Vanilla Muse' locked the second half of their translation. My recommendation is to read Vanilla Muse first, then finish off by reading the MTL from 'NovelHi' which has some good MTL, not perfect but at least readable. It's my 2nd time reading this novel and I still enjoyed it very much.

MC Crown Prince gets reborn into his younger self and grabs this chance to fix his past mistakes and spares no effort to protect, help, pamper and ultimately seduce ML, an adorable and obedient little ger. It's evidently a... more>> cliché story, meant for fans of the genre, like me. I especially liked that both protags come from warm and affectionate families, making this a light and relaxing read. Cliché doesn't mean that the story lacks depth or that the characters are uninteresting. There is coherence, excitement and much lighthearted fun here. Yes this is shota (there is a shota tag duh!), and no it isn't peodophilic. FYI, attraction to a 14/15 year old is called ephebophilia. Whether this makes it more morally acceptable or not varies from person to person, from culture to culture. Morals are not universal, codified or standardised. So if your morals cannot handle it, please stop reading and move on like the mature adult that you are, instead of complaining s*upidly. <<less

The story is exactly as the summary says. Be prepared for a lot of fluff. Plot mostly revolved around court intrigue and the CP is just flat out throwing dog food around.

This isn’t a one-of-kind novel but I still enjoyed it. The shou is pure, soft spoken and obedient but he along the way he proves to be reliable. While some may call his character flat, I personally think that his personality is a result of his upbringing and later on, MC’s doting and therefore realistic.

What I especially loved about this is MC and ML’s families. Both parties are just lovable and agreeable. MC’s father the late emperor and his mother were righteous but kind. ML’s immediate family did not even think of taking advantage of his position all throughout.

However, I do wish that certain side characters could’ve been fleshed out more to add color to the story.

I’ll be waiting for the translations but you can definitely MTL this. Don’t think too hard when you’re reading this and don’t compare BL stories in Ancient China settings to your morals in real life. If you can’t stomach an underaged ML then don’t bother picking this up at all. <<less

I really feel sorry for ML, it seems like no one really loves him... the author wrote that his family was forced to let him into the palace because his uncle secretly told his cousin that he had to enter in his place but they really didn't do anything to stop it, they cried a bit and then decided that it was better for him than his older sister because his sister had a better future than him having a fiancé and instead being a twin (man who can give... more>> birth) would be hard to marry, basically they weighed the pro and con and decided the one that was best for them, they didn't even think if the ML would die in the palace without a whole body or what kind of horrible tortures and r*pes he could suffer at the hands of the nobles, in fact in the first life he was really forcefully r*ped, but his family didn't think twice to send him, they did nothing to try to prevent him from entering the palace, they could for example pretend that he was seriously ill so they had to look for someone else, or in the worst case help him to flee before to take him away but basically they don't care much...

The MC is even worse for the ML... he basically treats him as a toy, the author implies that the MC fell in love at first sight with the ML in the first life but like a spoiled child after he got the toy he liked he got bored and forgot about it and let it die, in this life he basically still treats the ML as a toy, he didn't regret ruining the ML's life, forcing himself sexually... he just thought he should have played with it more him and not leave him alone and abandoned, he never thought to respect the feelings of the ML, to let him go back to his family, to ask him what he thought?, what he wanted?, in fact, in this life, he read a letter that said that the ML wanted to start his own business and return to his family and that only made him take the initiative to lock him up faster, he never reflected on whether the ML would be happier without knowing him, living in his small town with his family and his small business, being free and independent, for him, the ML has no will, it's just his toy and nothing else, he likes ML so he should stay with it, nothing else matters, just what he thinks... this is really a pity for ML. I understand that this is the behavior of EVERYONE, absolutely EVERYONE, the nobles of ancient China, and that it is normal that being an ancient prince the MC is so selfish and egotistical, because we are talking about a time when if someone wanted to r*pe you and he was a noble, you still had to thank him for his "favor" towards you, and your family could sell you for money. I know this happened in real life and I shouldn't complain because this is an old novel but... I still feel sorry for the ML...

I think the real problem with this novel lies precisely in that, that it is an ancient story, where the imperial power can do whatever it wants with people, and if you complain they kill you and even your whole family, so no matter how well the MC behaves with the ML, it will always feel somewhat forced, and it doesn't seem convincing, since we are not used to the culture of that time... So if you don't like this genre, don't read it, I regretted it... <<less

Personally, this one is a 4.5, but i'll just rate it 4 because I do have mixed feelings for the characters. The additional.5 is because it's a good writing for me, so that's that.

Anyway, so here you have this scummy gong and a naive shou. The scum gong forced himself unto shou and r*ped him under influence (he was drunk). But since the shou was simple and has really mild temperament, gong didn't feel any attraction afterward, considering his harem was full of pretty and enchanting women. Too bad, the... more>> ones he loved actually conspired toward him, and in the process killed shou. And as one said, "you don't know what you've got until it's gone" he finally regretted losing shou and become so absorbed he actually developed feeling towards a dead person. Like it's really abnormal if you think bout it logically, but it's for the story so I just deal with it like that.

Imma say this from my own opinion, you can disagree. I'll put this under spoiler just to shorten the lines.
Spoiler

If you feel it's unfair for shou, to still be wrapped by the once scummy gong, well, he didn't have his past, so he's actually living a happier life, and that's fine. If you can see it from another pov, gong has both life to remember. He'll forever condemned to the heartbreak and pain of the past even if he finally has shou in this life. And honestly, as an emperor who has power and superior, he'll be arrogant and rather selfish, he will tie shou to himself, and won't let anyone else to have him. It's cliche to anyone with power in any kind of settings, it's just depends on what kind of shou the gong meet. And in this story, if shou isn't with gong, with his temperament, he might still be pinched around by white lotuses (his cousin family was one example, his servant colleagues was another), and who knows what kind of man he will meet (maybe another version of the past gong even).

[collapse]

So back to story, gong rebirth and reevaluate his previous life, saving his love ones, and take revenge to his enemies. Altho the way he treat shou is by boiling frog in warm water, he did treat him well, and since first day of his redemption life he never betrayed him. It's a fluffy story if you don't compare it to their past life really. The drama's still there but it's not messy. So I still vouch for this to be on reading list, well unless you really can't accept the "special tags" here. And, please, if anyone has any concern with how young this ancient people get married etc (previous life shou was still underage for marrying, but not too young, if he had a miserable life, he might already been married out even earlier). It was like that back then. They're forced to matured earlier, and even has shorter lifespans, so yeah, just don't use modern values to compare with the ancients, esp in these stories. <<less

Spoiler

make me feel like I'm reading an old man sexually grooming a young child and I was uncomfortable reading it. I know in ancient time (not just China though but most ancient civilization) deemed 14 is marriageable age. Not in this novel though, the gong set his eyes up on his shou as early as 10 years old! And he's also started visiting his shou and kissing him while he's asleep at 11, and at 12 they started to perform s*xual act. IT IS NOT OK FOR ME. What irks me the most is that the author keeps mentioning the shou's age, making the underage situation more noticeable. Author, really?

It seems like I need to move on to other well written novels then. <<less

Though I read with MTL, I will definitely read it again when the translation is completed. The story is super sweet and super cute. I've enjoyed very much.

*spoiler*

Because this story was based on ancient china, shou's age is a little too young when they papapa for the first time. Cough Cough. But it was within the acceptable level. The gong really treasured his baobei so much that I was full of dog blood right now.

Anyway, I recommend this story!!!!

When you've read too many court drama with complex MCs who took chapters to scheme something, simple MLs like Jia Bao are like refreshing breeze. Sure, this novel did dealt with questionable themes which might be your personal squick, but that's common in novels about ancient China, so that's that.

My real rating is 4.5 stars because the author likes to describe unnecessary things i.e family lines and court relationship in long paragraphs. I can't care less about who is whose daughter or this concubine is this super important person's niece.
