Chap 1250?!? Holy cow, how did you do that man? Easy, this novel is machine-translated by Google or some other scrub Vietnamese translator that I happened to find out about and boy, is it a hassle just to read 1 sentence even when I'm fluent in Vietnamese and the translation is so bad that it hurts just by looking at one sentence. It is completed with over 2200 chapters and I dropped due to many reasons that I will discuss extensively below. But let's go over some good points:

PROS with CONS because of the author's settings:

  • MC can do ruthless things (killings, etc.)
  • MC is not a pussie so things get done but author decides his antagonist's fate
  • MC is surrounded because of his personality but sometimes, it's hard to see why every girl he travels with getting charmed (with exceptions to some)
  • Nice explanation of things but long paragraphs depicting things that won't matter to plot (happens more in late novel)
  • Great way to get power-ups (yes, MC can steal powers from the ones he kill with Greed + artifacts + cultivation)
  • Nice start with great storyline to readers to hold on their phones but after c300, they will drop their phones more often due to rage
  • Great world settings
  • Over 100+ characters that will just make you lose brain cells as they won't die in many cases and they are often forgotten until way later when the author "resurrects" them from the grave
  • MC against the world in a literal sense as wherever MC goes, bad guys will follow and encircle him until he reveals his name and he gets chased again
Now let us discuss the bad parts:

  • Bad Vietnamese Translation that hurts my brain, not the English ver - No need to go over this anymore.
  • Slow as a slug? Never heard of that - quoted from author's inner voice: Yes, everything in this novel proceeds very slowly except when the author doesn't want to prolong it any further. Besides this, everything, even a slug, is faster than how every arc progresses, how the plot unfolds, and how MC solves it either by luck or by efforts (Trust me, I've read other CN novels and they have slow progression with world settings, MC's personality development just like this one and on the same pace but this one just straight up killed my heart repeatedly as the plot goes on)
  • Romance in my story? Sure, but my little MC can't be this popular = Instant-c*ckblock: This story has harem elements meaning the MC has more than 1 lover. Yes, but the romance part is so little and yet, when the MC and any girl deserves some alone time, the author shows up and says NOPE, B!TCH! That makes you boil since the author deliberately interrupts the MC every time when things are going well for him and any girl with an event or some dangerous news regarding the antagonists. I guess the author was in the same situation many times in real life and he decided to let his MC suffer the same fate. Now, I'm not looking for those JP novels with MC winning over 1-dimensional girls and get to have s*x with them all the time. NO! This has very little romance parts compared to the whole fighting and adventuring scenes (only 2-4% overall) but can't the author not ruin this part since pretty much MC fights, runs, hides, disguises, etc. During the whole novel. That is not to mention that the romance is what saves this novel from being dropped since the fighting gets redundant later in the game
  • Spoiler

Best Girl is the demon tribe princess (she shows up in later chapters) and she is absolutely deserved to be with the MC, unless the author exists. Yes, her ultimate rival is the author himself. She is the one who spends the most time interacting in a romantic way with MC, her character development and romance development with MC is the most complete and understandable, even the MC himself thinks that she would be the first one for him to marry (Yeah, not the ultra beautiful and OP teacher that would become useless later in the novel). Her personality is so lovable every time she meets MC (unlike those "all hail MC" types) and she is even willing to sacrifice her vitality (yes it's to that extent) to save the humans related to MC when the feud between the demon tribe and the martial school of MC occurs. But guess what, MC can't marry her because it would cause a huge issue with the demon tribe and even when that problem is solved, he is too busy with his "duty" to strengthen himself in order to protect his harem of mostly human girls who was OP but now become useless (in terms of power, not money - and yes, all the harem girls now have lots of $$) since the power level is now raised above theirs while author is too busy focusing on keeping the antagonists alive and bsing more artifacts for MC to collect. Yeah, no sexy time for you, bastard MC -quoted from author's inner sadistic voice. Anonymous reader: "I heard from somewhere that he got married" Yes, he did since author decided to troll all the readers when introducing a demi-human girl who was absolutely despised by the beastmen in the series just by existing but she is a "saintess" from a beastmen sect so they can't kill her; while MC and her got involved "accidentally" on this trip to find some artifact, she and him got drugged with an extremely strong aphrodisiac by a "wingman [with author's name inserted here]" which they have to mate since all their cultivation would disappear forever from fighting against the drug. (Yeah, how convenient but then MC is fated for a life of no s*x after) Later, they would marry because there is this marriage-only martial scroll that allow MC and this girl to become stronger on this journey for power, but since MC and the girl fit the qualification (after long arcs of fighting of course), they marry since they also know each other and MC wants to take responsibility from taking her v**ginity from way back when. Yes, not to the best girl, but to this demi-human girl which less story time than her. (How nice, author - how about you write a NTR story instead). Finally, this demi-human girl's character is understandable after analyzing her background but her love development seems sadly forced compared to other girls in harem (she is discriminated by her clan, no one approaches even human because of power and race difference, MC doesn't, forced s*x from drugs, fall in love with more encounters?)

    [collapse]
  • Antagonists - Choose one: Become an unkillable c*ckroach or an immortal bastard: Either way the antagonists in this CN novel suffer an incurable disease like many other xianxia where the author refuses to let them die even when MC uses all of his power. Yes, I know keeping arch-enemies alive are important but don't OVERDO it.
    Spoiler

Why does MC doesn't kill this bastard that literally is below tr*sh and is persistent to the point that he shows up wherever MC goes (either treasure hunting or collecting artifacts or even buying rare materials) but instead throws him into a portal that "probably kills him as well as any other beings"; then, after long arcs of story, he shows up to be even stronger than MC because he receives training from another higher being? Or that MC only half-kills him and let his clan take him in for treatment and later he would show up again being more powerful?

    [collapse]
I have no words for this author but whenever the antagonists show up, the MC can't do anything except for disguising or use another person to do his task for him when it counts. Then, until the antagonists threaten to do this and that to the people related to MC, then MC would come out and fight only to let them live. It's just giving me cancer every time I read the name of the antagonists.
  • Power Levels - Strong at first, weak in later stages so why bother bringing them back: At this point of the story (c166), MC will slowly gain power even when he seems to suck at it (Greed, his artifact, will later allow him to get stronger but that would be much much later). Highest level in 300+ will probably Tian but that ceiling will be broken since the story can't proceed. So, it's good to have the names but as long as you get used to the names, they would be forgotten by the next few arcs since there are stronger people but the author has to bring the lower classes back in his writings sometimes to confuse you.
  • Spoiler

at c1250, MC already surpasses about 99% of this realm or plane that he lives in and he needs to go to another realm where he threw the antagonist bastard into (yes, he threw him into a higher plane) to gain even more artifacts and strength because he discovers later that the guy that he didn't kill is planning to make all the higher beings descend and conquer the lower realm since literally, anyone from higher realm can rival the strongest of lower realm without much problem. Yes, don't think that the Higher Tian masters of the martial school will even save the realm; they don't have the power to. "This is not even related to power levels" Yes, it does, because as of c1250, author has to spend time creating more classes that are higher than "Ancient Supreme Tian" is what I believed it was called and it is a pain trying to remember all of these names when you want to know who's stronger than whom. Back to the Ancient Tian, they are so strong when they were alive that even their artifacts in their tombs can help fighting which is why you will see MC in the future collecting these. But why even bother remembering since the higher beings have better artifacts and more power?

    [collapse]
  • Breakdown: MC will become stronger but the lower power levels would be discarded and forgotten because all the places he travels to don't have power levels lower than "Ancient Supreme Tian" but sometimes, the naming would be confusing since the author has no more naming sense for these higher classes and when you are used to the names of the higher classes. Even lower classes would be mentioned when you already forget about them which makes you wonder how strong/weak it is.
That is it for me when I got to c1250. If you are willing to wait for the translation to see for yourself how the novel goes, it's up to you but I wasted 3 months trying my best to decipher my own language from the bad translation (to read this novel) and then got pissed at how the author comes up with the current storyline. Have fun!

Ch. 9 review for now... :

Slow start, or is it too fast?

I don’t really like the simple writing style... and the MC hasn’t really developed a personality as of yet. The characters he characters he met aren’t really well-developed either... (foil for mc?)

ch 20 review: DNF I can't continue anymore.

MC levels up really fast in this one though that's bound to slow down eventually. MC can be kind of a jerk when it comes to money, due to past experiences. Kind of arrogant. Plot is very fast. Side characters... could use better characterization.

Hello dear potential reader.

So! Some people say that this is too fast and all.. But I don't think so. If you compare it with many other novels then you will realize that this isn't fast. To begin with it seems like that there are much more 'ranks' then what we learn of at this point. (132). I don't want to spoiler so I won't say anything about that, but this will be a long journey which I'm sure to join! :D

I like how the MC improves his mind, his thinking, and of course his power! If you like constant struggle, fighting, and the shameless stealing which is in my opinion hilarious then I strongly recommend this novel to you. Naturally the MC is OP in his own category but he has to start from zero like everyone else so yeah.. He will always fight people that are stronger than him.

Well about romance and 'harem'. As of chapter 132 he still didn't have s*x or something like that, which I don't mind. There was a little bit of this and that but nothing serious. It seems like he will hold on till he can meet again with his 'master'. I don't know if he will pick the other girls who like him later on or not? But that's for the future. All in all I like this novel very much, the translator is good at what he does (A big clap for Pan) and I can only recommend this novel to everyone who likes this kind of novel! :D

Spoiler

You have successfully found the worst joke ever! Well maybe not the worst. XD Sorry but there is no spoiler here.. : (

Really Dumb. The MC levels up super fast. It feels like everything good is being thrown at him. The various sects are moronic. I read it up to about chapter 35, couldn't continue past that. Just too dumb.

Some folks say the MC is lucky, with all the items and skills he acquires easily. However, it seems they forget the MC was an orphan in is previous life, surviving by himself and becoming a beggar at a young age. He died young, then took over the body of another orphan that was living by himself in the jungle with two wolves as his companions. With two messed up lives, can the MC not have a bunch of good luck after suffering for two lifetimes?

I have two problems with... more>> the story. The first one, it seems that the author’s writing or the translation is simplistic like Stephenie Meyer’s works. The second problem is the story progresses rapidly for the most part, without taking a breather. The enmity between the MC and some characters is caused by some minor problems and hate the MC in an instant. However, the novel is a good read and I will continue reading, and can not wait until the MC meets his master again. <<less

One of my personal Favourites in the Xianxia Genre, the MC is likable and the progression is quite fast too. While the MC may be a bit arrogant and could be a bit smarter its still a fun read.

DTH is definitely not a master piece, really far from it but it’s still quite entertaining and has no real repulsive flaws so while waiting for other novel, it’s a good catch. On the flaws list first an foremost, this story has a super fast rythm and you have no pause, going from one thing to another without much inner dialog, world building or xianxia concept explanations.

You probably won’t see any story spreading through several chapters and you jump from one thing to another at each chapter. Plus, MC... more>> takes less than 10 chapters each time before jumping to the next cultivation realm, he’s got a body twice as strong as normal people, he’s super talented and master every skills in a couple of days.. When he’s lazy. It’s so fast, it barely scratches the surface of the story and it seems as if the author would die if MC attain OP God level above chapter 60.

Plus he got the biggest plot luck ever, treasures, secret skills, money, everything jump right on his lap.

And without being overbearing, he’s shameless and a pe*vert. The example of plot luck, he finds a young martial artist girl in his bed and gets hit while waking her.

Ofc he asks her to train him for a month as a compensation and she accepts god knows why and gives him rare medicines, precious treasures and teach him her peerless clan super secret skills.

“I know we met yesterday but here’s my secret skill but shh don’t tell anyone or my clan will try to kill you, the other clan will torture the skills out of you (hm, is it a good idea? Well whatever!) ” – worse secret keeper ever lol. <<less

First of all, I have to tell everyone who says MC blows through cultivation and is too fast in it that they are wrong.

His cultivation method is devouring so he seems faster then the normal people and the small fries that are introduced early on.

The further you go ahead in the story, the harder his cultivation becomes. Mainly, due to the enormous need of resources for his special physique. His enemies become numerous and are always much much stronger then him.

The MC has to flee and hide, constantly use his... more>> head and use strategies to defeat his opponents. The enemies keep becoming stronger and many of his seemingly perfect schemes end up not killing the target.

His character grows and vision broadens, his encounter with the little demon princess becomes the most important thing in his life as it completely changes the direction of his life.

The burden on his shoulders becomes heavier and heavier and in my personal opinion, It's painfully frustrating with how until the end of the novel the time he could rest for was very little, and how slowly he improved.

However, it was great fun reading the battles, schemes and the comedy. Pig-headed emperor and Fatty Peng Fei, if not for these two characters the story would be really bland.

Secondly, The romance was bad as usual like the majority of chinese webnovels. The author is a b*tch. For no reason at all, many of the girls who deserved to be together with him and are still in love with him till the end of novel, never got married to him.

Without these women, he will absolutely never achieve what he has today. Plus, its never explained why he never gets together with them.

His first love thankfully got married to him, but it was way too late and the reason they were not together for a long time was absolute bullshit.

The MC is like a log, never making any effort to be with them more. The author says let nature take its course. Bullshit. You can make hundreds of clones and you can't even keep an avatar to socialize with them. Pitiful women.

Two of his marriages were forced on him. One in a comedic way and the other after a tragedy. The marriage we readers wanted most happened too late.

The marriage with phoenix, the whole love story is crap about some bullsh*t fate of phoenix loving dragons. However, the girl is great and he marries her very late too.

The marriage with the princess it really happened due to circumstances and nature taking course. Although, the MC had plans but never got married due to him worrying too much about conditions as this marriage had a significant meaning to it.

The rest of the girls they are just pitiful women, working hard for him, silently doing so much and never getting any love back because he is a cultivation maniac and always worrying about one thing or another.

Thirdly, This book has the worst possible ending. It's like in the middle of the story he decided to stop writing.

There is not much information in english about the author but this book has a prequel and a sequel. The main characters are different as well. So, there is not much point in reading this novel. As you will never know, what happened before and afterwards.

For me personally, one of this kind of novel is enough. I wanted to read some comedy and I got it. The story is great and I thoroughly loved it but with how the novel ended, I don't even wanna read a spoiler of the other two novels.

Fourthly, villians introduced very early on get forgotten and die very late without giving any sense of satisfaction. Many cool characters are forgotten as the story goes on. Mainly, because they are too weak. Secondly, the due to the MC who doesn't even have time for his own women, let alone his friends.

If the authors of web novels wrote more about the relationships between MC and his friends and family and women instead of thousands of pages of insulting dialogues by 1d villians to MC perhaps the novel's worth would be a lot more.

The beauty of all women is described the same way in each and every novel. The cities and world are introduced the same way as well, aka they become vast and sturdier. People complain about cliche plots and I complain about 1 dimension authors.

They can write so much bullshit, useless, filler, insulting, vulgar dialogues to increase word count instead of focusing on characters growth and interactions.

Lastly, the novel is machine translated on babelnovel and is hard to read, so I won't recommend it anyway. <<less

The beginning was great and funny. But the MC is extremely childish and arrogant. Two things that shouldn't mix! He's barely at the entrance of the Sect and his position already rose in high position! Like wtf?.. The way he handles things is just far to mediocre for me. Even the Villains are beyond s*upidity.

Its like he doesn't see the full picture here. ... more>>
Spoiler

For example: Wu Ming is the enemy of this territory. Wu Ming saved MC because of his Master. He praised the MC for being outstanding and that his Mistress had gotten a good disciple. The MC takes him further into the Nest not taking into the account that he is the enemy of this territory! What does he do? He kills Wu Ming! It could had easily been avoided. You should had known this would happen. Yet he still acts arrogant about it... He could had been at a better relationships for both sides.

Time of Review: c17. It’s early but it’s good to give people an idea. I’ll update this later on.

Devouring the Heavens has some pretty typical xianxia elements. Child who needs to cultivate more than others to ’level up’ but is strong for his level, a spirit teacher of sorts, and an artifact that is very powerful. His artifact is a blade which has the ability to penetrate defences and suck cultivation out of other people/animals. It seems to only be useful in specific situations which seems disappointing because it looks... more>> like it will be used as a fallback method to help him escape from dangerous situations.

Devouring the Heavens seems to progress quite quickly. I don’t know if it will iron out, but while the developments are quick, they don’t feel too rushed and pacing isn’t an issue. It’s a little early to make any judgements on the worldbuilding, but the fact that the MC is an orphan with no clan/family ties is refreshing, although as a result some of his motives seem a little forced. He's picked on for no reason other than to create enmity between him and other people which is used as motive.

The MC is quite smart, and while in the beginning he seemed a little naive he is quickly fixing this issue and is becoming quite ruthless. He is looking to shape up as someone who is quite friendly with people that are nice to him, but has a ruthless streak to others. There hasn’t been very many characters so far, but they mostly seem quite black or white (rude/domineering or good/polite) with little in between. I am also predicting some decent harem elements, he already looks more on the upfront side than some of the more reserved MCs when it comes to women.

The early signs for Devouring the Heavens are reasonably promising. I’ll update this a little later when more chapters come out. <<less

A bit different from the usual reincarnation plot device. In this story, an orphan boy reincarnates into another orphan boy who died in a mass grave after being bullied. It's unusual because unlike most other stories, he doesn't have any prior divine like experiences. He died as a young beggar boy with no life adventuring experiences. I've read up to ch 8, and the story seens interest ing so far. A bit on the fast pace side because within 8 chapters be reincarnates, gets a master, trains in martial arts,... more>> and starts his path of revenge for his current body's death. That's all in 8 chapters. But 6 days in the story's timeline. <<less

God dam this novel is bad. Author doesn't bother to describe things at all. Novel is just endless people coming up to MC and pulling their swords out to kill him. It just keeps happening chapter after chapter. The characters and conflicts have zero build up so its all insanely boring and pointless. The only build up any character have relates to killing MC for no reason. "Oh its the guy that tried to kill MC for no reason a few chapters ago", "oh here's the brother of that person... more>> who tried to kill MC for no reason a few chapters ago".

The author is incredibly relentless. Literally everything that happens, buying something, exchanging merit points, is just to set the stage for a few people come up to kill MC for no reason. Even when people are trying to kill MC for no reason they get interrupted by more people showing up to kill MC for no reason. And when the fight is over MC will leave a few people alive thinking about how they will call people to help them kill MC. Also there will be people watching from the shadows talking about when they will get a good chance to kill MC.

Other then "pulls out sword" characters there's also the females that like MC and have no personality. Author is just too dam lazy. The most character one has gotten is having the author say she is disguised as a boy. But no one is fooled by it. Also she doesn't even act boyish at all. No one even mentions it except the MC saying oh you look cute dressed as a boy when he first sees her. Author literally just writes "she said while still disguised as a boy" after her first three lines of dialogue. COME ON MAN. He doesn't even bother to actually write the character in a cliché way he just tells you what their cliché is supposed to be. <<less

I dunno, a bit too fast paced? It feels like I'm on a roller coaster.

I got totally lost with understanding how the MC breaks through so fast while everyone is always behind him.

Spoiler

The only hint of ever needing to breakthrough is for a 'Xian' to become a deity. Everyone else is literally just increasing 'physical' strength and how many animals your strength equals to. The author even makes the cultivation in this world seem very disappointing as once you learn one set of techniques, its impossible to learn another? Yeah and only the MC can devour everything and learn everything without restrictions.

[collapse]
Everyone seems to underestimate him and ends up dying too fast to use their own sure-kill weapons.

Also the whole 'Elixir' thing gets a bit confusing, but for those who read MTL, 'inner alchemy' should make more sense. So best not to confuse it with those 'bottle elixirs' we tend to always think about.

Character development is very bland, whenever it's a girl the author gives him some shy blush-blush moment but aside from that, it's people who get along with him too fast or ends up wanting to kill him as soon as possible. Even major plot characters come into play way too fast...

Spoiler

Like his master's brother gets informed a bit too quickly don't you think? And from a dynasty so far away, he already sends assassins by the next three chapters...

[collapse]

It honestly feels like I'm skimming through a filtered story that removes all the fatty juices and bones leaving secret sauce on mystery meat. Barely anything gets explained, what are xians, who are grandmasters, what is the difference between domains aside from calculating how many beasts your strength equals to and why does refining 5 organs mean?
Spoiler

Even PMG explains when need to...

[collapse]

It's like the author expects you to either know enough cliches to follow or able to take a hint and just go blindly as you continue reading. Yes, there's always that little bit of armor that mysteriously gives the MC the opportunity to get stronger whenever he needs it.

Spoiler

P.S. the MC is greedy, selfish, pe*verted and s*upidly full of himself. And none of this is funny unless you find humiliating women is funny before you kill them...

"Too fast"? There's no such thing, my friend!

The MC blows through cultivation realms but this is exactly what makes the story so enjoyable.

I imagine the guys whining love the dragged out, 50, 000 chapter series where the MC only steps onto the cultivation path on chapter 10, 000 and where you've forgotten who the villain is when the MC is finally strong enough to beat him on chapter 49, 999.

... more>> Get out of here!

This isn't a mind-blowing series, but there are so many slow-paced xuanhuans it's nice to see another one where you don't have to wait for the MC to get revenge.

Its a shame that the translation quality drops off and the series gets dropped at around 250.

4/5 stars. A 3 star story that gets an extra star because of the enjoyment factor of the MC's growth and the fact that (at least up to the parts I've read) there's no torturous wait for the MC to deal with the story's a**holes. <<less
