In order to fulfill his lifelong wish and graduation project of researching merfolks, Desharow, a student of Biology Department of Russian Maritime Academy, went on a long distance voyage with his mentor, Rhine, and caught a special species of male Merfolk in Iceland. Little did he know that this mysterious dark and evil creature had long since regarded him as his “prey” (cough cough spouse) and had been invading his body, leading to an unexpected trigger to a thrilling conflict.

In the end, can the merman’s instinctive desire prevail or not, and will the research of Desharow proceed smoothly under the obstruction of his mentor with the same misguided idea? What is the real purpose of the investigation that seems to be hidden in the presence of military forces when a terrifying conspiracy dating back to World War II begins to emerge….?

With the development of the research and the frequent occurrence of various dangerous incidents at sea, emotional struggle, and instinctive love, Desharow soon discovers some incredible connection toward the evil black-scaled merman and how his body has undergone some unique alteration.

I really liked this novel~~ I really kinda enjoy this type of ML. (The powerful and 'I'll kill who ever wants to touch my uke type of seme.)

Plus, I've been really hooked up with this novel that I've even tried to find some spoilers about it but it didn't reveal that much information. So Im back here waiting for more updates.

Waiting for more updates~ ?

Thank u for translating this~♡♡

I expected the storytelling to be more better than this. The 2 stars from this fujoshi för the smut scenes. I just felt concerned about my mental health while reading this. The MC is too frustrating. I do have a lot of complains, but I'm going to briefly talk about the inconsistencies here.

I think it's objective fact that the MC is dumb, it's not cute plot wise, coz the MLs actions only work if the MC remains oblivious to things he really should've already been trained to pay attention to.... more>> It's a bit concerning to say the least.

Mostly, it's a problem with the ineffective world building. MC is a marine biology student who is 20-21 in age. He is doing a graduation project on a newly discovered species. And he can't find the right term of a mating call. His "mentor" is some general/ mercenary but he was allowed in a university as a professor on the basis of what credentials. The characters are Russian but we see no Russian culture being shown. My point is, the novel's world building isn't something the author worked on much. They just went with a basic template and so a lot of setting seems very elementary. It's like a high school student wrote it in a hurry.

The smut is the only good part of the plot, because the rest of portion is very one dimensional.

Let's assume that MC is different from us readers so he might be unaware of things we know and so in certain situations, he went in blind. But his reaction time is awfully slow for a person of his credentials. It's just nonsense inserted to forward the plot for the sake of it. Half of the time we're not given proper information, and it doesn't even fit the typical "unreliable narrator" mould. It just comes across as lazy writing.

People might have different life experiences and cultural values, but even law stipulates in certain places a clause about how a reasonable person must've taken action. And for a well read and considered as "smart" college student, MC falls short. And this is entirely the authors mistake of making such an inconsistent setting but not putting in the effort to convince the readers through the characterisation and dialogue within the plot itself. So yeah, look out for the smut scenes but the rest if the plot, you can just skim read and save yourself the headache. <<less

I guess I'm having a hard time bearing with this kind of DUMB SCHMUCK naive MCs?

ML is real good tho, would read this novel in a bit if MC had the brains.

Can we place this ML in another novel pls?

Anyways, the plot actually looks promising but knowing MC is naive and prone to make even more naive decisions, I'll extract myself from this waiting-to-be detonated-time-bomb of a novel before I get too attached to the ML.

The translation is hella good, 3 stars.

I do agree with some of these comments saying that the MC is dumb. He's always doing the same sh*t that ends up bringing him more danger. As someone who is said to be physically weak but with a high IQ he sure doesn't know how to use it.

He knows in some situations that it's dangerous to be away from the ML (on the island) but he chooses to defy the ML all the time, just because he's a human and he thinks he's smarter because he's one. Also, he's... more>> not avoiding Rhine knowing full well that the bastard wants to r*pe him. (Even the ML). The guy keeps saying that he's scared of ML because he's a beast but won't stop approaching him. Most of his internal thoughts are recurring and repetitive it's annoying to read.

another reason I'm rating this 2 is because of the racist writer depicted through her MC. Whoever this writer describes one of the people trying to sexually assault him (seriously, everyone he meets wants to sexually assault him like he's the male version of marylin monroe, it's disgusting) as a dark skin-burly looking guy with curly hair then in the MC's mind he calls him a chimpanzee and says he wants to punch him in the face because he looks like this. Maybe if the guy was white and prettier than Rhine he'd accept? (Of course not. The ML is also in his bad books) so I don't understand why it had to boil down to the guy's looks. Also, the guy is German, now I'm not saying that there are no black people in Germany, but having them in the military working for a nazi is just unreasonable and unrealistic. If the country was USA, UK, or even France I'd understand but German and a nazi? It's unrealistic even in fantasy. The blatant racist remark made me speechless. I've read similar stereotypes are common in Chinese, especially some bls but I've never read this level of ignorance before. <<less

Wow where do I even begin? I (like so many people) came for the smut but quickly realized within the first 5 chapters that this had potential, But! The MC was dumb as bricks it frustrated me to no end. If his reasoning wasn't so s*upid and his 'kindness' ridiculously misplaced I might have liked this book, but alas he is painfully Idiotic at every turn and this might just cause you to die of stress, the ML is likable though so that's a plus at least.

Also the dialogue the... more>> MC uses is so funny, it's like he's from the 15th century "down! You beast!" "Unhand me you ferocious brute!" 😂😂😂😂 Like come on,

If you can cope with how unbelievably s*upid the MC is then you might just get through this novel without wanting to strangle him every damn chapter. As for me I dropped it after 40 chapters (I skipped read through chapter 25-40 then quickly realized there was no hope for the MC.) <<less

Please this novel is so good, you see the development of character and relationship development too. ML learns how to better control himself more (not completely tho lol) and MC grows more confident and smarter?¿ (Idk about that one to be honest lmao)

Anyway the plot thickness by soooooooooooo much by this chapter, I recommend you wait for a while before deciding how you feel about this novel because I was a bit miffed about how ML was treating MC and by how MC was reacting but as I... more>> read this novel further and unravel plots. I realise there is so much I didnt realise before that makes sense now. This novel is thriller and its damn well exciting. Honestly at this point I am just staying for the plot and ML lmao.

Now this is just something that is so obvious by now if you have read other reviews on this novel. This novel does include r*pe. Alotttt of it so if u cannot handle r*pe in novels PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS. You have already been warned if you read this novel despite that then please don't leave a bad review cause you were the one who read this despite the warnings.

Also this might sound so bad, but this is what I imagine mermans to be like, vicious, strong, evil lookin etc and the author managed to portray it so good, and yes I do think merman's will r*pe because they Are. Not. Human. They dont understand the severity of it, they just think oh you are enticing me and bam they f*ck u. After all they are also carnivorous so....... yea.

But r*pe is bad, like its so bad you are essentially taking advantage of people and using them as your toy, you are touching them without their permission and that. Is. Not. Okay, you are giving someone trauma, you are making them feel afraid of themselves. they cant even go outside because they are so afraid that they cage themselves in their own mind, their life becomes hell cuz you just couldn't keep your pants on or a skirt on. (Both men and girls can r*pe) and that is so sad

Anyway idk why I am even explaining what r*pe is but anyway please don't read it if this triggers you <<less

Overall rating from me would be:

4.5/5 for story

4.5/5 for writing

... more>> 5/5 for smut

Merfolk x Human is a trope that will never get old for me, but this story has to be my absolute favorite out of all the ones I’ve read. It’s dark, gritty, and full of crazy plot twists that repeatedly inject new life into the story. Although it starts out seeming pretty basic— there’s a scientist on a ship, they catch a merman, badabing badaboom— as time goes on it completely separates itself from any other merfolk story. It gets absolutely bonkers, but in a distinctly GOOD way.

The MC can be a bit annoying at times, but he’s overall pretty likable. There’s just a lot of second-hand feelings of “dude why would you do that, that is the OPPOSITE course of action one should do”, but he isn’t an absolute ditz to the point where it’s unbearable. Basically, he’s intelligent but has absolutely no “street smarts”. He could probably list the entire periodic table but would totally be the type of person to leave his bag on the subway and wholeheartedly expect it to still be there when he comes back. Smart, but a bit naïve.

The author did a decent amount of research for the story and, although some of it is incorrect, it’s overall pretty accurate. Prepare yourself for a lot of biology terms, mentions of a lot of unusual marine animals, and a lot of talk about gene modification. As long as you keep a mind that’s pretty flexible and open, you can look past the major inaccuracies.

As for the smut... A lot of smut is either really brief and un-detailed or it comes off sounding more like a baldy written p*rno, but the smut in this is incredible. There’s a lot of poetic language and it’s wonderfully descriptive. (It IS a lot of non-con and dub-con for quite some time though so if you aren’t into that this is 100% NOT for you) It sounds weird to write down, but I do love the author’s repetitive use of oceanic metaphors. I love me some good poetic writing that conforms to the overall theme of a novel in smut. <<less

I've been craving some romance that mixes in a fantasy type horror and thriller, and this is a pretty good example of that! Given that though, it is far from fluffy, clearly written for mature audiences, and it's worlds away from a fairytale merfolk you'd see in Ariel. It starts kind of narrowly focused, but it definitely expands itself as the story progresses. The big TL;DR is I like it so far and I'll be looking forward to more updates!

Agares (ML) is a prime example of a mysterious and beautiful... more>> yet dangerous and primitive beast, and the author managed to keep me on my toes so far so I could see what he's thinking in that head of his. He can be a bit childish, or he can kill ruthlessly. He may be h**ny and thirsty, but he's also protective. He's pretty much the pure definition of morbidly fascinating: someone you know you shouldn't be near yet can't help approaching anyway.

On the other hand, Desharow (MC) is smart but "dumb". He has sufficient knowledge in the field he specializes in, but his actions may come off as dumb to the reader at times. Not all the time, but in the beginning, you may feel that to be the case sometimes. I think he does get better in that regard over time as he sort of grows accustomed to the otherworldly things that happen. At first, it seems like he's a normal guy, but then he starts to unfold secrets about himself as he spends more time with Agares and delves into a conspiracy he gets involved in.

Spoiler

There is triggering and sensitive content, including dub-con bordering non-con, pedophilia, s*xual assault or r*pe, gore, body horror, underage s*x, "Stockholm syndrome" (the vibes may be there, but I don't think it's really nor completely that either), and like... kind of in*estuous love, so the tags are important here! Agares literally has zero understanding of "human morale", since he's a merman. What seems wrong to Desharow and readers is normal if not encouraged by merfolk, so there's a whole culture discord between them, which is something that should be covered in this genre! Regardless though, some scenes really went out there... I'm looking at you, Henry.

Oh, and angst! We gotta love it, haha. I'd say the scenes between Desharow and Agares are not so much angst, but Yukimura and Asura really had me. I barely know Asura, but it was pretty clear it was a case of a forbidden and tragic love-hate story where they essentially lived separate but united upon death at the sea.

I went into this novel with a mindset of reading a horror/thriller instead of romance, and admittedly, the horror elements of the story is done well. It's just a shame that for the MC we get a bimbo who typically dies in the first 15 mins of the movie.

This is made much more painful by the fact that it's written in a first POV from a character that's dumb as a brick. I do not want to understand how his thought process works, there isn't any.

I wanted to continue reading... more>> just out of curiosity for the plot but couldn't continue after 28 chapters.

Just gonna cut my loss here. <<less

Working on an in depth review & editing later. I have a lot to say.

The short version:

Compelling start, loved the horror and gore elements, but it dropped off around mid way. Feels like the author tried to add too many things to the story which ended up taking away the raw concepts which drew me in at the start.

... more>> The long version/ the edit (still working on it, saving frequently so I don't lose what I've written) :

First, let me start off by addressing some of the other reviews and the reoccurring subjects in them, first being the "s*upidity" of the MC. I don't consider him dumb, sure he's ignorant, but not s*upid. I feel many people seem to forget that what we know as readers and what the MC knows in the story are not the same. Also, there is a "brainwashing" tag for a reason, though it might not be in the way you expect. There are things the MC does which might seem idiotic, but if you consider his reasons, circumstances, knowledge up till this point, and current status, they're all actually quite reasonable; Frustrating to us, yes, but reasonable.

The good:

The first half of the story had me really engaged. I was on edge, anxious, and concerned in all the ways I should have been. There was gore, brutality, conspiracies, mystery, supernatural elements, and a drive for survival... and smut. I came looking for something dark yet fascinating and I had found it.

The Frustrating:

• Loose ends: there are quite a few which seemed to just be glossed over and this frustrated me immensely.

• Inconsistencies: The biggest offender in this category would be the ML in my opinion. I was expecting from the setup at the start that he was a sort of monster with advanced intellect. I wasn't wrong per-se but the story seemed to have difficulty making up its mind on whether it wanted him to be full beast, primitive, or human level intellect with little understanding how humans actually work. It made it difficult to figure whether to judge him by human standards or beast standards.

• Ephebophilia & Hebephilia:
Spoiler

ML f*cks MC once when he was unconscious at age 15 cuz horni and later in the story we see him f*ck MC when he was 14 for reasons

[collapse]
I... don't like this. It feels highly unnecessary. It didn't contribute the the plot or character growth at all & just made me uncomfortable.

• Side characters just going "poof". Like, its glossed over a lot. They probably died? Some were definitely killed, but some just kinda faded to obscurity while others to come back later in the plot & there's not really much rhyme or reason for the some characters just being gone now while others show back up out of nowhere.

The Tags:

• in*est. The tag wasn't there when I first started reading this and I might have been a bit more wary when reading if it had been.
Minor spoiler
Spoiler

The MC and the ML are related, but its not what I would consider as close relatives particularly.

[collapse]
BIG spoiler
Spoiler

One of the love rivals is literally the mc's bio father. He's a manipulative as*hole the reader's don't get introduced to until the later stages of the novel with a little foreshadowing in the beginning

[collapse]

• Smut. There's a bit of it & it wasn't always placed in the best moments. I actually started to get bored & frustrated with it at times.

• R*pe & S*xual Abuse. Hoo boy -slaps a pic of mc- we can fit some much abuse in this boi. Badly timed jokes aside, there is a lot of forced contact with MC & not all the instances have a warning beforehand. Just because MC isn't suffering in moments does NOT mean he consented. Also, being under the influence of brainwashing / hypnosis / whatever magic vodoo sh*t is going on that's influencing him means he's certainly not aware enough to consent.
Spoiler

also, there's exhibitionism & tentacle scenes so be prepared

[collapse]

In addition, as much as I hated the side ml/ antagonist, whatever you wana call him, I at least appreciated how quickly and apparent it was how awful he was.
Spoiler

point blank tells MC in the first few chapters he plans to r*pe MC if he doesn't behave & its initially passed off as a joke till everyone (MC & us readers) collectively realize "Oh Shit, he's serious"

[collapse]
in addition to the fact he did care about MC, though he's an awful person, he could have been worse. literally the ONLY thing I appreciate about him though. Also, MC is not the only one subject to this tag. There are some supporting characters victims as well.

• Possessive Characters / Male Yandere: They don't use these tags lightly. ML is INCREDIBLY possessive, no doubt about that in the slightest. In his mind MC is HIS and his alone and he has no qualms about doing anything in his power to make sure others know it too.

• Gore: There's a lot. Gosh there's a lot. If I had a dime for every bloody/gruesome scene I read, I might be able to afford the cost of therapy. <<less

I honestly enjoyed what I've read so far and can't wait for translation to be completed to continue reading this.

Plot: 4.6/5

Writing: 4.5/5

... more>> Smut: 5/5

Translation: 5/5

The novel definitely is not for the people who are looking for soft-hearted novels. There's a lot non-con content and horror elements in it. Tags should be taken seriously.

When starting this novel, I feel like it shouldn't be ignored that ML is a complete different species (merman) than MC (human) so he has totally different views and opinions than that of humans. He's more instinctive, animalistic and has his own reasons to justify his actions. Author made a wonderful job on emphasing on this (the culture/opinion difference in between MC and ML), so I believe most of the readers understood this point.

As for MC, I've seen WAY more dumber MCs than him so I haven't had much problems with him except some parts. Even though I haven't agreed some of his opinions, actions and thoughts around plot, it was his point of view and not everyone (including me) has to agree with him. Though I also agree the reviews saying that he was on naiver side meanwhile everyone around him was way more down to earth and grounded to reality. He was a curious soul and is practically portrayed as a total 'nerd' who had done nothing but studying most of his life to satisfy his curiousity. He also was an amusing character with some jokes and eccentric behaviour at unexpected times in my opinion. He wasn't that terrible like most of reviews put him to be.

Minor spoiler:

Spoiler

However while the plot was thickening, I have literally just felt like begging him to just make up his mind, be decisive and just kill some characters when he had opportunity to do, so things wouldn't go worst ways possible. He hadn't killed a single person so far in whole novel when everyone was quite literally threatening his well being and life, which caused him many more sufferings than needed.

[collapse]

Venice arc spoiler:

Spoiler

I also wholeheartedly agree the reviews saying MC on Venice plot was annoying. It was totally frustrating because of the actions MC had taken on there and pursued ML s*upidly and let his emotions take over his head. Everything could have worked much more smoothly if only he stayed slightly more rational.

[collapse]

General opinion about MC's weakness towards ML (contains major spoiler) :

Spoiler

I'm not sure how people can expect him to be MORE strong-headed and put a lot resistence towards a 'beast' who can overpower him at any given time and is in a rut. There also was a lot hormones that's muddling his head along with his past (memories before 6 years old) that's been veiled by amnesia. Agares was in his life and practically grew him up along with his grandpa/parents. The body never actually forgets and it's been mentioned multiple times that he was attached to Agares subconsciously due to his childhood time spent with him and new found attachment along with his never ending scientific curiosity. I feel like he resisted enough before he fell in love.

[collapse]

Other than the points I've mentioned up, I've loved everything about this novel. It was thrilling and the plot was decent with unexpected plot twists. The setting was absolutely good and descriptions were very vivid. Translators have also done an amazing job on translating and they even went as far as leaving translator notes on confusing parts or showing unusual scientific/ocean/ship terms in pictures. It's a must to read in my opinion. <<less

Is it perfect? No. Absolutely not. In fact it's got a lot of problems, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

There are plot holes, loose ends, and some questionable morals.

It could have been a lot shorter too. So many plots that the story could have done without. One thing was "resolved" only for another thing to pop up.

Spoiler

the whole mermaid zombie radiation arc was entirely unnecessary. And the weird mafia thing...

[collapse]

But overall, it was good. Most of the characters were likeable, and the smut was entertaining. I even found myself at the edge of my seat at some points!

Spoiler

I will say, the whole fugitive crew during the mafia/zombie mermaid arc did not leave any impressions on me. The only characters that I payed attention to are the MC, ml, and the creepy 2nd ml... Can you tell I didn't like that arc? Loll

If you're looking for something profound, look elsewhere. If you're looking for smut, possessive love, and mermaids, you've come to the right place!

As expected, for a novel made in 2014 people are gonna hate it for its usual contents during this time.

The novel is really good in story wise, only found out through the existence of the manhua and I never realized how much they censored this series there.. But aside from that, there's some non-con and r@pe included if that makes you uncomfortable then understandable. There are lots of uncomfortable scenes especially with Rhine character here, but overall it has a sweet ending so no need to worry for the... more>> worse of the main couple. I really wanted to like this, mostly because I heard good things from those who'd gotten past the unsavoury topics, but I couldn't do it. One of my biggest turnoffs is public s*x and exhibitionism, and Desharows violation and the recording of it by the scientists put me off this completely. It's not often I read something that leaves as bad of a taste in my mouth as this, but I'm going to throw in the towel now.
