Liu Ming, since he was young, lived in a savage prison named Savage Island where the prisoners aren’t controlled by any guard or security. When the island sinks due to “mysterious” events, only a handful of people survive – those survivors are then pursued by the government.

On the other hand at another place, two practitioners are worrying about what will happen to them because the young master that they were supposed to protect had died.

Their young master just so happens to look nearly like our hero…

What will happen? Where will Liu Ming ends up and what will he do?

Having read this one to completion, I can say that I overall found it to be an enjoyable read at times.

Some parts are really good and some parts are really bad.

It rushes through some arcs and especially the ending feels forced and rushed.

... more>> The plot is also quite aimless with no real goal to speak of except, okey I've become too strong for this area so I either a) leave for a new area or b) get chased to a new area.

The whole story just follows the MC moving from area a -> b - > c and then a boss appears from practicly no where is beaten and THE END.

This is not to say it is a bad read there is just no motivation except that the MC want's to become stronger, which is fine I guess but not for 1500 chapters straight.

The biggest down side of this novel is in my honest opinion romance, harem and ending.

Heavy spoiler about ending don't read if you don't wanna know the ending.

Spoiler

The MC has 3 harem members. The first one is a fishwoman who has an aphrodity physique that makes everyone be seduced and want her. She is the main "wife" and the foremost love interest of the MC. They become engaged around the first 1/3 or 1/2 of the story. But all she get's to be is a stay at home fiancee. Like first they become engaged MC is gone for two years, comes back goes on a short date MC gone for 10 years, comes back fights of an insect gone for 50 years, has some tea is gone for 300 years. Thats pretty much her whole part of the story after the engagement. She spends around 400 years waiting to marry the MC.

The second member is pretty much just thrown in all of a sudden (though hinted at) from out of the blue at the end.

The third member is a foxfirl who he sleeps with/rapes who he helps to get her kingdom back and is asked to stay but he can't cause of cultivation so he leaves.

All three of them fill almost no function except for forcing in a harem in a story that shouldn't have one.

And the ending?

Basically after beating the big bad boss the MC's cultivation jumps up and he is forced to ascend to the next realm within a year.

So the MC rushes back to sect picks up the fiancee who waited 400+ years, takes the 2nd member and when asking the foxgirl she goes tsundere on him and say's no while hinting at him to ask her again, but MC just goes - Okey bye!- and leaves.

Then the rest is explained as he going on vacation with his two wives makes them pregnant and then leaves them to go into meditation during their last three months of pregnancy to prepare for ascention. Then they give birth and at the same time MC starts ascending he somehow sends two necklaces to the babies.

And the two wives starts crying cause they know they can never ascend cause of low cultivation and talent. While the foxgirl proclaims that she will chase him where ever he goes, since she has the talent and power to automatically ascend after hundreds/thousands of years THE END.

The chapter is basically open ending with a shoddy wrap up of the harem at best

The novel is really great and deserves a greater renown and ranking.

The problem is the translation speed!!! The posting speed is really poor. Its irregular at best of times. Many novels started at the same time has greater stock of translated chapters than this.

The novel doesn't deserve. It.

Pace - Slow
Action - Good
Mistery - Great

Very good plot. He is not a badass MC, he gets power because he takes risks. He is smart, very, very smart.

Romance? There is not, at least untill now (270), which is good. It's very important remind that he takes risks to get power, not to save girls in danger, unless he get some benefits from that. Better have patience to follow this master piece, otherwise you will lost yourself in this story.

In my opinion this is not a generic XianXia/XuanHuan, hence why some people find it boring.

Not just in XuanHuan or XianXia, but usually in most web novels, the story, the setting, background and the very world in itself is for the sake of making the MC shine and dazzle everyone, if it's done well it's so satisfying (imo very few does it correctly i.e ergen's novels), now in the case of Demon's Diary i'd say it is not the case, this is more about a journey of a cultivator who... more>> pushes forward with what he has, not the story about a "hero" saving the world or a cultivator deifying the very heavens.

Although it is fantasy it brought a more realistic depiction of characters and rules than your average novel, that is what I like about this novel, the MC has prudence and the antagonists (antagonist and not villain course there not really black and white in this novel, just interests) are not so 1 dimensional or predictable. The MC doesn't have bullsh*t luck nor any backing, he has to rely in his wits.

What makes me not rated 5 stars is that the interactions between characters is so poor, the MC doesn't trust in anyone, the closest to a partner he has is his pets or spirits. <<less

One of the most frustrating cn I've read. The translater can't keep the characters name consistent at all and will give most key characters 3 different types of name, which are similar if not the same as other characters because the characters aren't mention with full name but with their last name plus pre/post status being different all the time. Sometimes the character will be Martial X and other time X Martial. The same person will be called Senior and at other times as Junior depending on the status of... more>> the person they are talking to, also with the same problem as the Martial example I've given. The biggest failure is that they have a glossary of terms and name, yet they don't even follow it. I'm disappointed of GT translation quality for this novel. <<less

Can't help but write this review. From earlier chapters where the MC broke out from the Savage Island, I'm expecting a badass OP MC because from the description, if what I remember is correct the Savage Island is the most secretive and strict prison for the most diabolical criminals? But what we get is far from that. That's too much of a let down.

The story is ineresting but every aspect is extremely vague.

The plot is nowhere in sight, as in to say there is still no antagonist or goal, were just following along an MC that has no clear motivation.

The MC on that point, seems to not have an oppinion on anything, goals/objectives, or any form of personallity for that matter. He comes off has a thoughtless robot that does one thing after another with thinking a head or caring about anything going on around him. His dialog is nonexistant, he just... more>> sits in his room or haphazerously explores.

The world is interesting, events happen clearly other people have goals and agendas, but none of really depends on or MC. He is just an observer from the side who occasionally benifits. The story has potential but its making zero attemts to utilalize it in any tangible way. <<less

In my opinion, this is the best novel I've read. It has everything I look for in a protagonist, and the story so far seems realistic when compared to other novels. It's also a bit slow, which is somewhat different, but the content isn't boring. I just wish it was already fully translated, but even though it's not, the translator has decent translating speed.

I have to say this is perhaps one of the better works available when it comes to this particular category of light novels. There is a mysterious shroud around certain parts of cultivation, which serves to increase the reader's curiosity without making him/her a complete stranger as pieces of information surface as the story goes on. But the gem of the novel lies not in its cultivation system (even though it is pretty good.) It lies rather in the characters in the story.

While many might complain that it is a... more>> slow moving story as there is focus on side characters, but this particular focus helps this story grow into something more than a 3rd rate power trip novel that we see elsewhere. The MC is in a class of his own, he is not overpowered but rather slowly accumulating his power by using his talents in the best manner possible. They do not show the MC being amazing at everything, no he is as human as they come and is slowly working on improving his skills just as everyone else. But in his pursuit of immortality, we can see him creasing over the creases in his skills and improving step by step.

Also the power scale of the different characters is established early on in the novel so we don't see that "mountain beyond mountain" saying being used in a cheap manner. Random overpowered characters don't pop up in this story much, in fact so far in the story barely any have, while they are powerful they are not suddenly thrust on the reader.

All in all, it is a different novel than what you are used to, as things do not happen at the snap of a finger nonsensically, rather they have a reason for happening and the author fully explores that with the reader. I would highly recommend everyone to give this novel a try and read at least 10 chapters and you will be more than hooked to go through the rest. I personally spent a whole day binge reading till I was caught up due to how addictive and fun this novel was.

Cheers! <<less

Overall characters are good, story is not bad either. But it lacks excitement (or you could call it anticipation building) like in True Martial World.

I rate it 4.5

I'm giving this a 2/5 purely due to the fact that I made it over 1000 chapters.

And just to be clear, this novel is not "that bad."

"Boring" perhaps, but not absolutely horrendous or unpalatable.

... more>> If I had to explain what this novel is like, then I'd have to say that it is essentially-

"A nature documentary of a cultivation world."

I'm calling it that because there isn't really a story...

It's just a novel of an MC, who is randomly chosen to be possessed by some ancient sealed demon, so he has to become stronger in order not to be possessed.

Basically, becoming stronger for the sake of becoming stronger.

That's the driving force behind this novel.

So it makes the MC less of a character and more of an "engine" that the viewers use to watch this documentary, about an ever expanding world, where strangers, fodder, rivals, enemies, allies, etc. all die randomly, even without any involvement with the MC.

There's really not much else to say about this novel.

It's just a world building novel with a running theme of a frog jumping out of a well, inside of another well, that's also inside of another well, inside of another well, etc.

Edit:

I almost forgot, but the combat, while relatively descriptive, is pretty absurd.

Spoiler

Long story short, the ranks, tiers, realms, whatever you want to call them don't matter "that" much

The reason for that is because the stats are basically-

Health - Fixed

Mana (Spiritual Power) - Exponential

Attack - Percentile Scaling

Defense - Flat Scaling

So as you can imagine, when the MC fights people at higher levels, the amount of spiritual power doesn't matter because defensive measures in this universe for anyone who isn't the MC is so bad that the MC is able to pierce it like paper most of the time.

And then enemies (or allies) just die.

[collapse]

Also, for anyone complaining about the MC always being underestimated-

Spoiler

I'm sorry, but that's the MC's own fault for always being secretive and downplaying his own involvement in whatever happens.

It's also a plot thing because if the MC were favored, then he'd just be given mats and sit in a room forever, instead of looking for alternative ways to get mats / opportunities via world exploration.

And the last thing about this is that people get mad about the elders not treating the MC well even despite winning achievements or tournaments-

But here's the thing...

From the POV of these powerhouses...

They're watching ants compete.

One ant rises above the others?

Big f*cking whoop.

Just try not to only view the situation from the perspective of an ant lol

Generic cultivation story. Starting was good, but unfortunately author did not capitalize on traits developed from starting on the island. Some good moments in the story but those are far and too few in between. The fighting scenes can be skipped.

Translations are not great but acceptable. Towards the later half of the story, gender swaps are more frequents. Name swaps\mistranslations are common. I don't have access to the raws so can't tell whether it was due to the author or translator to use a totally different name for the MC+... more>> a few other characters. Think the names might be from other books that author or translator is working on. Names of cultivation stages are also a mess. <<less

Great Novel

The MC is calm and cautious. He doesn't take unnecessary risks unless there is no other options. He has the lowest talent when it comes to cultivation speed and he seems aware of it. He doesn't get annoyed when people that he has defeated get more resources because of their higher talent, instead he keeps working hard without having a need to prove himself to others. The MC has a treasure that assists him but its more of a double edge sword since not fulfilling its requirement would kill... more>> the MC.
Spoiler

In fact it has already killed its past users.

[collapse]
Also the MC needs to put effort to get the most out of the item and still barely is able to catch up with his peers. There are some cliches but they don't cause the quality of the story to drop since they are handled quite well.

(I don't recommend the novel if you expect a fight every 5 chapters also the MC is a master of a few abilities rather than a jack of all trades. His pets are a large part of his combat prowess as such they don't get useless with time) <<less

One of the best novel on this website. This novel is only for people how have patience to read it. MC is smart but not a ego dump. He know what to do in different situations other than mu*dering everyone who appose him. Different characters have there own thoughts and are different from mob 1 mob2 love interest 1 love interest 2 villain1 villain2.

It is much best then weak guy killing mob (so-called young masters and sect disciple) taking all there resources and becoming strong, kill mid boss ... more>> (sect masters) taking resources getting stronger going to next place and repeat. While final boss is typing to kill him.

This novel much better then this. Must type.👍👍👍 <<less

pro:

  • some decent fights
  • in some cases character development of side characters
cons:

  • wooden MC which asspulls new moves / fighting techniques
  • good preset but wasted and never properly used besides asspulls (majority of all the "mortal" techniques)
  • many forgetable side character with the charisma of bread
  • random, unsatisfying powerups
  • cheatskill with inbuilt deus ex machina rescues (not as bad as Portal of Wonderland, and used just once in 300 chapters)
In short, shounen like action novel with almost no tension.

3, 8* stars. SO far it seems to have a lot of potential, but we're not quite there yet

Things I appreciate:

It's a story about an averagely talented guy who step by step moves forward. He is close to the bottom of the food chain and he knows it. Taking care to cautiously advance without drawing too much agro from the people around him.

... more>> The protagonist is mild tempered, not overly arrogant and takes neither the mantel of good or evil.

The other characters, they all seem to have their own thought and ideas and aren't s*upid in comparison to the protagonist.

The mystery element ; There are constantly greater things going on in the background some of which MC gradually begins to uncover.

Recommended for people who want a casual reading experience yet also desire a sense of freshness. <<less

This is a pretty decent cultivation story (so far). The story has been progressing at a good pace, not too fast not too slow. There are some minor twists here and there that have caught me off guard.

That being said, the translated chapters are terribly edited. Not deducting any points since is not the novels fault (i think). There is zero consistency in terminology. Anything that has a name: character, skill, place, etc. Will be spelled differently on the next chapter (or the next paragraph), and then differently again on... more>> the chapter after that, it feels like 20 different people are translating it and they are not talking to each other. Also most characters are addressed by their surname, and too many characters share a surname. It has been frustrating to read.

Edit: caught up to chapter 327 only to find out it hasn't been updated in over a month, wish I had looked into that before starting.

Edit: Picked it up again after a long break, unfortunately all the names have changed once more, which is especially frustrating since I had not read it in months, now all the clans seem to have different names. At least the new translating team seems to be releasing 1 chapter a day. The translation quality is not the best, but I will give it some time. <<less

It was really good at the beginning, but the romance is too dry, u could literally feel the dryness sometimes. And the author's works always end in separation between MC and his lovers as much I read so far. It became too bland sometimes. It didn't live up to the beginning expectations.

Nothing great but still perfectly decent readable story, was happy to start it, till it was dropped/choked to death for a looooooong time, then seems to have been picked up by the current translator (s) which unfortunately is on an annoying intrusive and irritating website so not even going to try as that website alone put me off immediately on pc and mobile.

If the new translations were hosted on something that didnt spam my phone/pc with popups and other annoyances id probably be back on this again, pity ive forgotten... more>> wth actually happened and re-reading it from the start isnt going to happen any time soon, maybe if the chapter count explodes and it doesnt get dropped I will take another look, but after so much time of it being dead I would rather just wait and see. <<less

Pretty good.

The protagonist is competent and the story isn't bad.

Two things bug me though:

... more>> 1: The protagonist is very aloof. He doesn't really have any close friends, which makes the story feel a bit lonely.

2: The story is mostly told from a narrative perspective, "this happened and then this happens", instead of a first-person perspective, which would make it easier to connect with the protagonist and actually experience his story. I constantly find myself zoning out because too many irrelevant things are being described in excessive detail.

(Why is this marked Harem???) <<less
