“Blackie, tell me honestly, when and how is this person going to die… What? You don’t know? You’re the Grim Reaper!”

If you're tired of reading the same old wuxia cliche novels than give this one a try, the MC here moved to LA for better job opportunities since he lost his doctors license in china. While there he works as a on call illegal doctor for various clients from poor to very rich with the help of his demon pets. He gets demon crystals based on how large of a good deed he did, so the more he helps people the more crystals he get. The crystals are highly sought... more>> after by demons because they take a long time to obtain and has special effects like curing cancer on humans and animals. There are some stereotypes in this novel but little to no racism and if there are any its usually people joking around with the MC, chen.

Pacing is good so far, lots of s*x with various women. Not everything is accurate however for example paying $300 for a 1 hr ride onto the other side of LA, so the author has done some research but not fully, but don't let that stop you from giving this a read. <<less

This novel does go around the cliches of when the MC ontain supernatural abilities.

At first I looked past his overal s*xual persona, having se* left right and center with any girl who wod give it to him. That was disgusting. But at least they didn't describe it like smut novels and he had a little morals to only go for sigle ladies.

I liked his demon pet companions thats what mostly drew me and I looked awy from hsis illegal doctor business

The MC is not smart, im mean he does want... more>> to get discovered or his illegal business at first but he blatantly low key tells ppl, especially girls what he does, and the s*upid MC thinks he wont get caught or find trouble. I mean he tells even police officers. I think the MC should be smarter than how this one is acting, with more secrecy because there are two amnoying females that are making me drop this movel and the MC doesn't stay away from them but actually still talks and interacts with them. I mean a female doctor that seems to have it out for him, finding information about him from other people (who the MC saved or talked to, yet with their big mouths are giing vital info away) and the s*upid MC knows he doesnt like the doctor but around ch 100 still puts himself in the line of fire and ask her for a favour and gives ber a blood sample of his experiment with demon blood. THE GIRL IS TRYING TO EXPOSE YOU MOTHERFU**ER. I dont get his logic.

Also there is this clingy girl who was a co owner of a x dying dog that practically is a lonitic, stalks the MC saying she was his ex girlfriend just to get info of where he lives to find the dog, then actually tricks the broker to live in the ML house with him. First of all I knew that was going to happen because the s*upid MC was like to the broker early on I dont mind a roommate but has to be a girl, and when the call came in he didnt even ask the name or see who it was that he let into his house WITH DEMONS. Tell me this is not a s*upid plan. To keep secret he should keep people away from his house.

Rhe MC the erks me with how little he seems to plan his actions when it involves keeping his secret and the demons.

So if you dont mind a s*upid MC that may do s*upid things go ahead and read the book. If you can get past his naivety then its a maybe a 3/5. Could of been a better rating if the plot thickens early, he is smarter, we have better character development and take away his h**ny personality. <<less

I thought it'd be some sort of cliche cultivation type novel but no, it's a modern-day setting and the MC has this ability to summon demons. He uses the demons to help him cure really high-class patients.

Although I do really like this novel, it gets a bit repetitive sometimes. Like he'd meet someone who will look down on him for some reason and then they'd see him hang out with all these super rich and important people or someone who wants to kill him gets scared of by his powers.... more>> But still, it's fun to read.

In the beginning, the MC's main thing was having s*x with a bunch of random women which put me off quite a bit ngl but so far I don't think it's a harem. When he first met the FL, she and her sister were annoying as f*ck though. I was kinda surprised that she was gonna be the FL tbh but if you carry on reading you'll probably forget about it and she calms down.

Unfortunately, the translators dropped it so they've stopped translating <<less

Translation and editing quality is okay, so don't expect too much.

The story starts off rather rushed. We barely get any background of MC or setting of the novel and he's already thrown into the L.A. Area of the U.S. After losing his doctor's license in China. After a shaky beginning, the novel starts getting interesting when the MC picks up more pets with more demonic abilities. As an illegal doctor trying to survive in the U.S., he starts meeting famous people with the assistance of those pet abilities. His powers... more>> further increase based on certain situations and he starts getting quite strong with many encounters with the supernatural.

I think this novel is quite entertaining once you get past ch50+. <<less

there isn't much I can add to what thejugde has already said about the background of this novel. The only things I think are worth adding is that this novel can be pretty damn funny at times with interesting characters. With minor character growth from the MC substituted with a great array of memorable side and supporting characters. This means that even though the MC is pretty much the same as he always is you get to see how he deals with the new and interesting people around him.

the novel... more>> has good enough world-building with information being provided before its relevance to the story meaning you don't have the feeling like a lot of other works where the author just added stuff when its necessary to progress the story.

The only complaint I would give is that some of the excerpts about the world would have been good places for foreshadowing which this book lacks but seeing as this novel is not a plot-driven story rather relying more on character interaction, foreshadowing is really unnecessary. <<less

Finally a decent Chinese webnovel.

It's a good novel with light plot. I very much recommend, especially in comparison to other Chinese webnovels. But lets immediately go into details.

Setting: it's quite interesting. This is basically a story about a doctor with a fortuitous encounter (technically it's heritage). The supernatural element is initially focused on demons (as the title suggests). The setting isn't explored very deeply, but more than sufficiently for a comedy like this.

One very good part about the setting is that the plot takes place in the US. This means... more>> that there is much less cliche crap than in average Chinese novels (no spoiled young masters, no cool rich young beauty, no fat best friend (uh, there's a casual friend fatso though...), no how dare you not give me face, no you are courting death, and so on). The characters are more normal, ironically. Moreover, there actually is no racism/nationalism in this story! Well, there is, but it's just a few white randoms prejudiced against asians and so on, and vast majority is portrayed decently.

Characters: they are quite good for a comedy. The protagonist is somewhat typical for at least some Chinese webnovels, but better. He's basically a chad who likes to mess around. On a side note for those who want to know romance vs harem,

Spoiler

the protagonist sleeps around a lot at first, but then he has a single girlfriend without any random crap. The "romance" as they got together was crap to be frank, but there's a silver lining: this author isn't like most dumbass authors who make girlfriends stop appearing after getting into a relationship because they don't know how to write about it (or what a relationship looks like probably too, for that matter).

[collapse]

The other characters aren't particularly deep, but they're actually decent enough for a comedy. Some of them are quite hilarious. There's even some character growth! For example,

Spoiler

the protagonist finds it in him to enter a serious relationship instead of messing around, or there's a dumb guy who keeps on doing ridiculous stuff and MC has to keep fixing his dick, and this guy actually somewhat matures afterward after randomly adopting a daughter (being a parent made him grow up somewhat).

[collapse]

If there's one regrettable thing about the character cast, it's the demons. Overall it's great, it's varied, entertaining, and each demon is memorable. However... basically the same rule as in harem stories where there are too many love interests applies, meaning

Spoiler

once a demon the MC summoned is properly introduced, and the arc where this demon was relevant ends, then while the demon still hangs around, the author goes off to introduce new demons, and the old ones fade into the background despite still being present. It makes me a bit speechless. Demon pet harem story? Lol.

[collapse]

Plot: this one is a bit crappy, but then again, this is a comedy, so don't expect anything deep. It's more of a daily life than anything grand. Fortunately, there are enough events (often associated to or centered around characters, or driven by them even) to make you feel like nothing is missing. Of course, it can only work for so long: as you can see, I stopped reading in 800s. I basically got bored of it, especially since after 600-700 I had to switch to MTL (there's some site with edited mtl that is quite readable, though still riddled with mistakes).

I greatly recommend for a casual read. If you want something deeper, leave this alone. If you are put off by what others wrote about MC sleeping around with different women casually,

Spoiler

then firstly, it's a pretty rare concept in a Chinese webnovel (in the way there's no strings attached, and both sides are cool with that), and secondly, it actually didn't last all that long, and the story isn't a harem after that.

[collapse]

The spoiler above is not big, but no need to read it if you're not put off like others. <<less

I like the idea of the novel but I feel it'd have been better if written by a more experienced writer or at least the writer should have waited a little for his skills to improve or find a good editor because this story can definitely be written in a better way.

the spoiler below contains some rattle so you can just ignore

Spoiler

Most of the CN novels in the market are written by non professional writers with basically no knowledge of proper writing stills or plot building, any one can write anything. This actually made the CN novels closer to the Normal populace especially young people but it also resulted in other problems.

What I find annoying in the CNs I read in the last few years

    • The unreasonable setting for MC character and powers
    • Narrow minded and shallow world view point. There is many writers that just stuff things they don't understand, have any prior knowledge of or even done any decent research about in their story. This might be fine for most of the readers but it's annoying for some and can even be disrespectful or offensive.
    • The authors don't bother to take a second look at their settings and world building when moving with the plot and most of the time they are just made for the sake of "Originality" but mostly don't contribute much to the story. The author can just discard everything and change the whole world building later without any care. (you are reading a modern fantasy story then find yourself reading a Sci-fi one to only turn into an ancient wuxia or cultivation story... WOW!!)
    • The main (only) goals of 99% of the CN novels I read is MC become a god (king of gods, emperor of gods, emperor of emperors of gods,... etc) - f*ck every female type and rule everyone (sometimes people KNEEL for him to accept being their ruler)
    • The dialogues are basically copy-paste, which is REALLY frustrating when used on characters that are supposed to be of different nationalities, gender or have different personality
    • Face-slapping, lots of face slapping. you can never disagree with MC or you get face slapped or killed
    • most of the side characters are 2d (either arrogant, f*ols, overly against or overly enthusiastic to MC) and most of the time the writers can't even keep their characters' setting with development of the plot and change it whenever they want.

Well.. not all of those in this novel (at least not in the part I read) but I really got annoyed with novels I recently read, Really annoyed. They are all the same with minor differences. Especially the wrong medical information and racism sh*t.

[collapse]

This story is somewhat nice and funny. Side characters aren't too bland, there is no racism in this novel at least not the part I read
Spoiler

some people prejudiced against the chinese MC, this time the MC is victim but thankfully it's not that serous and in normal range that may face any foreigner in other counties. I'm still uncomfortable about racism no mater which party is the victim but at least it didn't cross the line and the MC isn't a pushover

[collapse]

It's a plus that the author used a REAL doctor as the MC not some quackery. Don't expect much romance, the MC is ready to get la*d with any beautiful female he meets. what makes me most sad is plot-line, the author instead of focusing on his settings and trying to understand his characters to make a good plot-line and story development, he just follow the the others by stuffing random things and the story goes on, he didn't make a good use of the settings and characters. <<less

Uh. I really liked this novel. I was kinda off put by the description as I had no idea what the names meant. I didn’t know the general direction of the story, but I tried it anyways. I liked the slight face-slapping, and the unique things I saw that I didn’t see anywhere else. Now looking back on it, I’ve realized how stiff the interactions were, but they weren’t that stiff. Just slightly. Or maybe that’s just the protagonist being curt. It got slightly repetitive at the time they dropped... more>> it, but I was new to novels at the time, and the novelty of face-slapping was just incredible to me. It never got old, at least for old me. If there’s one thing I had to name that was bad, is that I had no idea where the general story direction was supposed to be. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I just wanted to point it out. <<less

Heard the only good thing past chapter 20 is the MC's h**ny personality to bed women. Oh and good comedy because the world-building is based on gangster US movies and '70, so it's full of stereotypes and delusions. Is it true? Well, already in chapter 33 he f*cked one he just met for a treatment (I cheated by skipping chapters)...
