He reincarnated into a hunter world and became an underwater hunter.

There were only 20 people in the entire country in this minor profession, but it didn’t matter. He liked the sea.

“Crazy! There’s a real artifact?!”

“Ahahaha!! How much is all this worth!!”

But then, the Great Diving Era began.

“Ah, it’s so beautiful… I want to see more, more…”

“W-What is that!! Save me!!!”

“Aaaargh!!! My head!! It feels like my head is going to explode!!”

…It would be better not to go in there.

I'm not very interested in this story so this'll be shorter than usual:

The Good:

    • High quality Translation + Editing, haven't seen any mistakes.
    • Fairly original setting: the heroes already left? Deep sea creatures and exploration? Not yet another academy setting? The characters aren't all teenagers? Yay! Bunch of more secrets related to the deep sea and the setting.
    • A fairly ok approach to show don't tell + naturally incorporating foreshadowing/teasing further story developments without revealing everything outright.
The Bad

    • Setting and characters feel... plastic, unrealistic, contrived. From the outset you have a group of hunters that are so ridiculously powerful they'd doubtlessly rank among the top ones/best in the entire world, but their skills all have the nasty little condition that they're only effective underwater, so they're rated at like D-rank or something because the agency is only willing to test in very limited conditions. Which is in itself profoundly deranged, given the simplicity of arranging a demonstration, and how easy it would be for any of these so-called useless heroes to show their power whenever/if they wanted. Many of their abilities have very little to do with any aquatic environment, it just feels like a weird gimmick to make sure they're constantly underestimated. These people, along with the MC, are regularly saving the planet from some of the greatest threats out there, and yet they're keeping it secret from everyone with the barest hint of an in-story excuse. Everyone feels overpowered and underestimated, especially the MC.
    • Somewhat repetitive writing. See some monstrosities that threaten the world, defeat or hide the horrors, not say anything and keep everything undercover. Quite frankly I don't really feel there's an actual storyline here, or at least not a conventional one/it's more episodic in nature. While it seems there may be an actual plot that's being built here...
    • There are major issues with pacing, character development and just overall the characters being interesting/people you care about. Builds up super fast towards high-stakes fights, characters feel flat and aren't particularly well written. and the MC is fairly bland, the author lacks the chops to be able to convey the majesty, mystery and terror of the deep sea.
    • Bad at descriptions. Seriously, the author read about the "indescribable" part of Lovecraftian horror and took it as literally as can be; descriptions feel empty and bare, if they're even described in detail at all.
    • The TS (man reborn as woman) aspect is an aspect of this, but it seems like the author is really only good at writing "hooks." They throw in things that sounds interesting or might draw in attention, and actually do so relatively well, but fail to properly expand/develop them. Note that here if the MC was a man basically nothing would change (a lot of KR novels recently have TS though so I don't technically have an issue with this, it's just representative of the author's approach; use as many elements as possible that sound interesting without being able to build on them).
Quite frankly this is actually a relatively high quality novel, or at least translation, that tries to be original. The main issue is that for a variety of reasons it's just... boring. Insipid and uninteresting, for me at least (I've still left a 4 since I recognize its qualities). Your own mileage may vary, and judging by the high rating as of the time of this rating (4.4) most people who bother to rate it seem to like it.

Surprisingly good. It's focused on the mysteries of the ocean in a world with Gates. The underwater hunters know and hide some of the worst threats from the world (on the basis that no one else can do anything and knowing would just traumatize them).

There's also an hidden antagonist deliberately driving interest in the oceans, but to what end? Very intriguing.

Originally when I saw this novel, I thought it's gonna be another one of those shitty TS/livestream novels that somehow became a trend lately. However, it's actually good.

The MC is Yu Parang, a guy who got reincarnated into a novel he read before, and got TSed into a girl when he chose his skills. She's very passionate about the ocean, so upon getting a skill selection upon her reincarnation, she immediately chose one that specialized in the ocean. The deep sea of the hunter world is filled with unimaginable horrors... more>> and mysteries. Being one of the few hunters that specialize in deep sea hunting, she, along with other underwater hunters, decides to team up and protect humanity from those horrors in the ocean.

The concept is cool, and the execution is pretty good as well. The author did a great job at writing the mysteriousness of the ocean. Early on in the novel, many mysteries got set up instantly, and many of which are interesting as well. And the mysteries doesn't focus only on the sea as well.

The livestreaming aspect of this novel is done really well. The viewer comments and the contents of the novel are at a perfect balance, unlike some other livestreaming novels where the viewer comments take up half the pages of a chapter or where there's no interaction at all.

Personally, I really like this novel. It's doing things other novels didn't do while having a great storyline. You should give it a try. <<less

The story is good, and the premise is just the right amount of cosmic (deep ocean?) Horrors and incomprehensible things involved. The main character is very strong, but not overpowered (technically, everyone is overpowered right now). Basically, it's the moderin hunter storyline, and the MC is a rare subset of hunters whose abilities, while powerful, only function in the water, which is why some of her colleagues are stuck in C or D rank despite having abilities that can tear down mutated whales 400 meters in length.

It's a good story,... more>> but I do wish that korean writers find a different way of describing something indescrible than ■■■■■■■. It's getting old.

Another thing the writer does: can't write something scary? Cover it in eyeballs, or make it have one BIG eyeball. That'll scare 'em!

If you've read cosmic horror stories, this is the same sh*t but in the ocean, which makes it 500% better because the ocean is already f*cking scary.

Initially, this was a 3.5 star story that started off almost slice-of-life-y, but the plot quickly sped up and we now have mind controlling sea urchins?

Edit: thinking about it some more, this novel is way better at setting up mysteries. I've seen far too many writers use a single question as a crutch for their entire story, so seeing large reveils so early is very refreshing. I thought they would totally drag the mystery down 200 chapters, but it happens wayyy earlier. <<less

Was very surprised by the novel. On all aspects, it scored pretty highly.

Only real negative (if you consider it that) is it doesn’t really seem like a gender bender. At least so far, it’s mostly a backstory that it happened, not really relevant to the plot.

I'm impressed with this novel, so I decided to write this review.

At first, I thought it would be a typical tr*shy story about TS novels, but it proved me wrong. The premise is okay, but what follows it is the reason why I'm giving it 5 stars. The descriptions are well-written—though the repeated use of words like "grotesque" can't be toned down. It would be even better if the author could delve deeper into the descriptions based on their own nightmares.

The premise follows the current trend of reincarnation novels, where... more>> the protagonist is reborn in another world. What makes this one unique is that the protagonist, originally a man, is reincarnated as a woman. A little spoiler ahead,
Spoiler

the novel the MC read in his (her) previous life is already complete, but there's aactually a hidden darkness lurking beneath the surface.

[collapse]
But, unlike many other trendy novels where the protagonist is a clueless airhead surrounded by women who are infatuated with him, this story takes a different approach. The main character is a woman, and while there are plenty of female characters, they aren't all obsessively drawn to the protagonist. The lack of romance and obsession is a refreshing change.

To those curious about this novel, I can tell you that it's a captivating journey into the unknown, blending deep-sea creatures with the nightmarish horrors in a way that feels unique. <<less

This story really caught me by surprise. I didn't expect much going into it, but I find myself getting more and more interested as the story went on, as the mysteries continued to tease us and slowly unravelled.

At it's core, the story is about the MC trying to stop people from being influenced by the diving craze and go deeper into the sea. She does this by streaming her activities involving the deep sea horrors and giving her viewers Thalassophobia and PTSD. The viewer interactions are hilarious, such as the... more>> viewers getting scared out of their skin and being absolutely terrified, but continuing to watch because they joined an internet challenge to watch till the end; our MC trolling the viewers and also getting trolled in return. They managed to fit this light-hearted portion into the story in spite of the darker undertones of the story as a whole; There are unspeakable horrors down at the sea and you don't want to know. But what is it?

Just like the viewers of our MCs channel, drawn into her content, we the readers cannot help but want to find out just what exactly is in the deep sea. What unspeakable horrors has our MC seen? What happened to the MC in the past prior to the beginning of this story? We will find out as the story continues I guess. <<less

I didn't know I wanted this kind of book, but am I glad I got it. While it does have some cheesy bits since its one of those where the MC is a streamer, there are real underwater horrors that the MC is trying to hide from her viewers, that they can't be allowed to see. I love this kind of Cthulu horror, so I was pleasantly surprised to see this mix of genres done relatively well. I'm only at chapter 18, so I'm curious how the book will go... more>> from here. I'm looking forward to more brain-frying cosmic (underwater) horror!!!

The translation itself is top quality, I don't think I've noticed any grammar issues the past couple dozen chapters. Please note the chapters are very long, so while there are only 40 some released right now and 70 some written in the source material its actually quite a lot. Enjoy! <<less

WHEW! This was an experience. Basic premise is that MC is reincarnated into a story he read, but since he like swimming so much he chooses a skill that turns them into a girl that is really broken underwater but nowhere else.

The story begins right after the original's story's MC and his harem all ascend into being gods

The story delves very deep into underwater horror, or weird and strange occurrences underwater. As the story goes on tons and tons of mysteries begin to surface. Some of them are extremely shocking

For... more>> example:

Spoiler

It's revealed that the original MC and his harem are...all dead. Instead of ascending into the heavens they were all trapped in the ocean and every single one of them all died

I'm liking the story a lot so far, the setting is really interesting and for the first time in a while it's a story that has an actual fresh take on an isekai MCs powers, those being completely underwater focused (as anyone reading this has probably dredged through a mile of necromancers, mages, and sword masters just like me). My one big complaint is that the author seems to be rushing into super high level stakes stuff insanely quickly by webnovel standards. I personally would've preferred the story to "breathe"... more>> a little and have the MC settle in/explore the setting a little more before the world changing stuff started, but it's by no means uninteresting or a deal breaker and it's still a very good read so far. <<less

This is a story with a great concept that is executed well, but it could be better.

The most important part of this novel is the setting. This is one of those novels where gates appear on earth and people gain powers with a system. The twist is that the story focuses on the ocean. Humans are the absolute masters of land. Some people forget that the ocean is vast, mysterious, lovecraftian, unexplored, and full of danger. When people go beneath the surface of the ocean that this fear is ever... more>> present. The addition of gates amplify the already terrifying existence of the ocean and the author knows this. They created a story in which the plot revolves around the ocean.

What I love most about this novel is that has a clear direction and has very few distractions. There is no harem or romance because that would only be a pointless distraction. Hell, the story doesn't even focus on the gender bender aspect of the story because that would also be a pointless distraction. The story would be exactly the same if the protagonist started off as female (I think the author only used gender bender to generate interest). The author focuses on things that matter such as mysteries and, you know, the main conflict.

For those that came for the live streaming aspect, you will not be disappointed. It is relevant to the story.

Spoiler

There is a malicious existence (it probably came from the ocean) that wants people to explore the ocean, and the live streams are meant to make people aware of the danger of the ocean and prevent them from exploring.

[collapse]

I should also probably mention that this is a transmigrated into a "book world" story. It may not seem relevant at first, but it is.

The author usually doesn't introduce something if it doesn't serve a purpose. There is a minimal amount of "fluff" (I put quotes because I do not actually view things like character development and world building as fluff. What I mean by fluff is stuff that the author considers unnecessary that would only increase the word count). I wish there was more "fluff" so that the world and the characters could be fleshed out a bit more. I believe the author could have done more to explore the characters, their relationships with one another and the setting. The author focuses too much on the main conflict (ironic considering I just praised the author for focusing on the conflict) and making the plot move along at the expense of world building and characters. I barely know anything about the five friends of the main character other than their names and some surface level traits. As for world building, I want to be in awe of the ocean's vastness, and the novel falls short of doing this. There is definitely wasted potential when it comes to characters (in my opinion, it is the characters that breathe life into a story) and setting (this sucks because the whole concept of this novel has to do with the ocean being awesome and dangerous). There is also the issue with pacing. This story moves pretty fast. This is probably one of the reasons why I can't fully appreciate the setting and characters, as the author doesn't put enough time into developing them. These are my main complaints.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, but issues with character development and world building prevent me from having it as one of my favorites.

P.S. Upon further contemplation, I think I can still have hope for the author to further develop characters. The mc's friends haven't played much of a role in the story so far (chapter 63), and they will definitely become more relevant as the story goes on. As for setting, I am less optimistic. <<less

Tldr review: This story is actually excellent thus far, and could make for a seriously good TV show or anime. Good plot progression, good use of its setting, engaging mystery and stakes. The author seems like they know where they are going, and that this is all part of their plan towards the ultimate conclusion.

Long review:

So. You know those stories that start off with a simple humble start, but over time develop mystery, depth, and major stakes? Stories like a pirate who wants to go on adventures and become the... more>> Pirate King. Stories where a kid just wants to go penguin sledding, but ends up having the fate of the world in his hands?

While this story isn't as big as those titans, it is similar in its development.

This story starts with a MC who is reincarnated into the story of a novel he read, as a girl named Parang. This world is the cliche dungeon & skill windows that are commonly written/read in Korea (doesn't have constellations I don't think). Parang gets the skill "Daughter of the Kraken", which makes her incredibly powerful underwater, gives her a top tier mental stability skill, and allows her to summon the Kraken to just eviscerate stuff in her path in a horrific eldritch style manner (would cause mental breakdown of others witnessing it).

It starts off pretty simple, she's just living her life enjoying the ocean and hunting monsters underwater. And then she reaches the point of the end of the novel, where the hero character ascends with his "harem" (I don't recall if they are actual harem or more of a team), transcending into a higher plane of existence. When they ascend, their incredibly powerful artifacts (crafted by hero) are cast into the ocean.

This triggers a "gold rush" of people trying to dive into the ocean to gain immense wealth or power if they can find any of the artifacts. Harang is distressed by this since the depths of the ocean are incredibly dangerous and many people stand to lose their lives. After saving the life of a crafting live streamer who was exploring in the depths of the ocean in a sub she had built, Harang decides to stream and showcase the dangers of the ocean to discourage reckless diving.

This is the fun part of the novel, as well where the author really gets to shine with creativity. Parang's livestreams are a load of fun as she goes from being educational tour guide of the great unknown depths, to trolling and scaring the crap out of her viewers by showing horrors. And of course since Parang is a pure person, there can be amusing back and forth where her viewers tease her over slip-ups and she gets her revenge in her broadcast.

Make no mistake, the streaming is not the main focus nor is it the side quest. It has a specific role in the story and is used very well in a way that does not interfere with the plot development nor does it overstay its welcome. Fans of livestreaming stories will enjoy this part, and even people who dont particularly like it may find they enjoy it in this story.

Which brings us to where the plot kicks into high gear. It all starts when Parang discovers an after effect of the ascension ritual hero & party performed. Specifically
Spoiler

when one of the members who ascended was instead found dead with their body in the ocean. And through this discovery we learn the ascension ritual went real bad real fast and brought hero & party into the depths of the ocean for some unknown reason where they fought desperately for their lives, with their fate unknown

[collapse]
. This introduces some real tension and mystery as we learn something very wrong and dangerous is occurring. Additionally as a result, the three major powers in this Earth, The Hunter Guild, the Word Government, and the mega corporation all start making moves related to the ocean. Which ends up drawing Parang into major events.

The plot continually develops this mystery and we gradually learn more and more. Meanwhile the danger continues to escalate in stakes, like a ticking time bomb. Parang herself also has an escalating mystery about her powers and importance.

Recently, we got some major lore drops about the Kraken, Parangs importance, and how dire the stakes are (the danger lurking in the depths). As well as some clues towards some of the mysteries out there.

The author does a excellent job balancing everything and telling the story. Crafting a vivid world, while gradually unveiling the ultimate plan piece by piece. The translation is good quality as well.

I can't say the story is perfect. And just like series such as Lost, Game of Thrones, etc even though the story is built up excellently now, it's entirely possible it could fail in sticking the landing with its climax and conclusion. But as it stands now, I feel like the author has things planned out and knows where they are going.

In terms of genderswap, frankly it has had basically zero importance in any compacity so far. Maybe it will be important in the future/climax, but make Parang always having been a girl in her past life, and basically nothing changes.

The closest thing to romance we have, is Parangs "romance" towards the sea. Or perhaps feelings of closeness to her sort of nakama.

I don't really have much to critique, since any flaws in the story are quite minor and nit picks. I guess the only thing that could've been done better, is the author giving use an occasional glimpse of how the rest of the world looks at or reacts to events or sees (or doesn't see) what is going on.

Kinda in the same way One Piece could benefit from showing things from the commoner or marines perspective (not entirely unlike what live action one piece did with Koby, actually showing another perspective).

It's something that could make a good story more rich. Perhaps my opinion could change on re-read.

Anyways, I'm not a real critic of series. I probably rate many much higher than they deserve, even going by my criteria of rating them according to what the purpose and goals of the story are meant to be. This series is genuinely good and would be one I would consider recommending to friends. It's one I might put in my "read again someday list" (not a big list). <<less
