As Zong Yan sat in the classroom, he always felt like the odd man out. His body was there but his soul had sneaked out the window. He wanted to do anything, wanted to be anyone, as long as he wasn’t himself.

He had a cool and unbelievable superpower:

He could extract different persona cards from the void with his bare hands. With a high enough “SAN” value, Zong Yan could become an entirely different being. Superpowers, ancient gods, eldritch powers, even… an Outer God.

Soaring above the dome of the magical city, he was the free-flying son of the wind.

Strolling through the rain-soaked, foggy streets of London, he was the secretive and unpredictable night watchman.

Walking in the extravagance and glamour of New York, he was the sun god who held the light in his hands.

Diving into the geometric city of R’lyeh, he was the indescribable king.

In the gorgeous and colorful world of dreams, he was the original belief in the universe.

Early to bed, early to rise, going to school on time, working late to save the world. A senior at Qingyang High School by day, honors scholar at Miskatonic University by night. Investigating unusual events all over the world during summer and winter vacation, battling wits and courage with evil gods, dedicated to preserving peace and saving a faltering world.

Zong Yan: Thanks, but I’m just an ordinary high school kid.

This is basically Hogwarts x Lovecraft BL with a dash of a certain anime series I won't mention yet because there are so few translated chapters. Poverty-stricken orphaned "good kid" high school student MC has a weird ability that lets him use mysterious cards to activate various superpowered identities. Then he's discovered by a covert organization of Awakened elemental ability users and shuffled off to Hogwarts-style University to learn about the Lovecraftian horrors bent on attacking Earth.

ML is "an unnamable God" and makes his appearance about a dozen chapters in,... more>> and since he's not exactly human, it takes a while for him to become fascinated with and warm up to human MC.

The story basically consists of a series of arcs either in school or in various locations around the Earth, and man are some of them good. The author is skilled at depicting action and seems to try to inject human emotion and compassion into MC's backstory and motivation for "saving the Earth". There's also a lot of comedy, and despite the Lovecraftian overtones, the horror elements are mostly there to be poked fun at rather than legitimately scary.

As of this writing, there are so few translated chapters that one should take the NU rating with a heavy dose of salt -- this site has certain people who always kneejerk downvote BL. Anyway give it a try, I personally find this story pretty interesting and look forward to reading more. <<less

At first, I thought “Wow, this is so Gary Stu, I’m cringe laughing” but as the story went on and the characters got developed, I realized... Hey! This is pretty good! The plot holes get filled, the OP ability is... still OP, but it’s done well. MC has a good personality (is a good boi), so it’s not like outside his “personas” he’s got nothing to show. Lots of cults that I don’t think I quite understand in MTL, so I’ll be visiting the translation in the future!

Spoiler

ML... Hehe, I kinda like the “abstinent god turns h**ny for lover” theme. There’s a spicy scene where MC sees into his own future and finds himself and ML doing the deed. Hehehe...

OH MY GOD 4.4 IS NOT ENOUGH RATING FOR THIS BOOK!! It should be higher. The world building is excellent!! And you can clearly tell that the author is a huge fan of lovecraftian horror because oh man its been integrated so well. Though, i'd say this is more like a shounen action novel than yaoi.. Very romantic subplot-esque. Instead, this gives me off solo-leveling shounen novel type vibes LOL, very action-y and the pacing is a so nice? Like during actions scenes everything is super fast and impactful idk... more>> how to say it. Really good novel. ALSO!! Props to the translator! The quality is amazing and the updates are daily too!!

edit: f*ck PPL WHO SAID THERES NO ROMANCE HERE!!! Boom: confession scene

Zong Yan tightened his fingers, apprehensive, almost wanting to cover his pounding heart to muffle the sound.

"The Lord of the Gate wants to know everything about you, but not because you're Azathoth's stream of consciousness. Even if you were just a human being, a small and insignificant existence, Yog-Sothoth would still want to learn everything there is to know about you." Yog gazed directly into the eyes of the black-haired young man. His voice was low and serious, with an undeniable depth.

"I will always be watching over you from the end of time and space. An evil god will never understand what it means for a human to like or love someone. These are inferior emotions that evil gods discarded long ago. But if you're willing- The Lord of Time will prove to you over a near-endless expanse of time that the feelings of an evil god will always be stronger, deeper, crazier, and far more intense than human love."

Rating: 4.7/5

This novel is basically the wet dream of someone with chuunibyo aka. someone with Middle School 2nd Year Syndrome. It's super entertaining considering how you can't really take this seriously.

For most of the story it felt like watching a shounen anime on drugs and only in the end do you suddenly have the BL development (still on drugs btw). I didn't particularly mind the lack of intimacy and romance in the majority of the story as the ending kinda makes up for it. The contrast between how the ML... more>> treated the MC before and after the romance development is kinda hilarious. Imagine a hands-off, neglectful yandere turning into a chewing gum-like clingy and possessive yet doting yandere.

Spoiler

What has me raise an eyebrow, though is how the ML likes to pull the MC into all kinds of kinky plays at all times when evil gods are supposed to not feel any s*xual desire or pleasure. So he just likes pleasuring the MC that much, I guess?

[collapse]

The main pairing aside, there were a lot of different and interesting side characters many of which have had to remember names. On top of that, the author also likes to throw in big names into the equation and distort and twist historic events to spice things up. I did not bother looking up people or events mentioned that I did not know about already so I can't tell which elements were added or twisted to fit the narrative. History nerds might have a field day shredding the plot for being ridiculous for all I know.

What I do regret is that Captain Si, the ninth monarch, did not play a bigger role. That tsundere was initially my first guess at potential ML. I was a bit disappointed that he wasn't. He kinda faded away, too... such a waste...

What I did like was the R'yleh (or however you spell it) arc. Cthulhu as doting big brother had me coo inwardly so I was happy to get a small treat in the extras.

Inconsistencies aside, I do give bonus points for originality as I have yet to read anything like this before. <<less

i honestly love the interaction of MC with evil gods. It doesn't have the typical trope of spoiling your lover. I love it. And the comedy is definitely something lol.

Has a very VERY promising start, but the author can't seem to focus on the bunch of elements they added. Already read some of this author's works, so yep, they did have some problems with pacing. The plot mapping/planning itself is in disarray. In simple terms, this novel's pacing and plot shift are so obnoxious that you would have a sudden alzheimer on what the story is supposed to be.

Reading this, it's like you bungee jumping around the world with 5-second pause each, and RNG god as your guide. No,... more>> you shouldn't make the MC fight the final boss/discover his birth's secret in the middle of your expected chapters, and then spend the rest of the novel afterward doing cookie crumbs stuff.

Other than that, many intriguing and attractive aspects of this novel (the one that you would probably hype for after its discovery) are left to rot, forgotten, until maybe a few lucky ones are crammed into the end of the novel with zero value at that point. Here's a quick rundown for it:

    • Spoiler

Magic school ends up as just a background painting

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

MC's friends are not relevant, even England's king's son that has multiple foreshadowing throughout the book. Yeah, we got the answer, but such an emotional plot "not very high fatality in eldritch god o' meters" put after an imminent doom is f*cking useless no matter how good the writing for that section was. Because all of our adrenaline battery already spent just a few moments ago

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

Really, why the f*ck is MC's secret of birth put in the middle of the chapters count. Oh, so I'm an eldritch god apparently? let's focus on other stuff except for the apocalypse, shall we? But, to be honest, I blame the male lead for that. Can you please wait for your libido for a moment, so that we readers can have some plot coherency?

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

Uhh what else, oh yeah, the rank stuff, heck, the whole power system/structure also doesn't matter. Government secrets and authority trope (wealth, the skyscraper apartment, used for like, once) vanish into the air. If you strive to make a god protagonist (from birth, by that I mean the ones who didn't need to put some effort into powering up), I think it's evil to hype up a HUMAN power ranking

      [collapse]
A shame really, because the reason why I got baited countless times to read this author's works, is because the premise is really interesting. They have the guts to add their own twist into the otherwise mainstream genre. But god forbid their pacing... I think the only decent one (pacing-wise) of their works is "Thiller Trainee", but I kinda dropped that because I think the whole plot is really rellied too much on the unresolved s*xual tension and "Main Characters worshiping" (also, the baits). Or maybe I just don't like the unlimited stream genre that is a "One-man show", basically a story where without MC, the rest of the side characters will die. No matter how competent they are, none can beat the MC's brilliance.

Anyway, read this yourself and find out if you think this is great. Because really, it was quite a ride, probably a 6 stars on my list if it were not for the bad plot coherency ruing the whole story. I truly felt that it was a very interesting novel with a lot of its own charm as well as an exciting premise, but the pacing really threw me off... <<less

I tried to read this several times given how highly rated it is but I couldn't get past my second-hand embarrassment. I kept on stopping and picking it back up after several days and I couldn't see myself doing this for over 100+ chapters- so I cut my losses short.

It reads like a fantasy from a teenager deep in their Chuunibyou phase. A typical poor protagonist who becomes OP and reaches the peak; as it's the BL version, the only difference is that the ML has to be stronger than... more>> the MC in every way.

I am very clearly not the target audience so I'll drop this here. I just wanted to warn other readers that it may seem quite childish and lacking in depth, so if that is not what you're looking for, this may not be for you. <<less

Pros :

Interesting plot. Harry potter meets lovecraftian horror with the support of special ability cards. It's more of an experimental writing but I enjoy it very much. The world building stays true to lovecraftian horror but it kinda falls flat near the end.

The protags and side characters. Let's just say that the novel focuses more on MC. Sure the side characters have their own story but we don't get much of it.

The romance is well ML isn't a human being so we can't use tgye usual measure. I must say... more>> it's kinda boring and the romance only make progress in the last 15 ish chapters.

Cons :

The author could build and expand the world and storyline even more. There's so much potential but author just decided to end it. The ending feels rushed. Don't expect much for romance. Nevertheless this is in my top fav of lovecraftian horror w/out too much horror <<less

Firstly, thank you to the translator for doing a wonderful job. This work would have been so utterly confusing without your effort.

I actually really enjoyed this novel, it was very interesting and the overall twists and turns of the plot really had me on the edge of my seat at times.

of course, tho, there are points that bothered me such as the sun god arc.. Look I'm from america so I know as much as anyone how terrible this country can be, but I don't think it was really fair... more>> to capitalize on all the bad about it and bringing veterans into it. On the same hand of racial discrimination, I kind of found it annoying that every foreigner was blonde haired blue eyed. Like.. Yeah there was the pharaoh, but all he did was play games so he wasn't really apart of the plot. But every side character (foreign) that had a background spiel was blonde and blue eyed aside from the kid immigrant sam//: idk that could just be me wishing for more brown representation especially in the American arc, but I digress.

Anyway, That's not something that necessarily takes away from the overall plot, it was just something more of a pet peeve I guess.

Moving on, the only other bothersome part was that it didn't feel like the development of the cp was really there. One minute he was wary and somewhat fearful of the ML's actions and then he's in love. There was no real red face nervousness type of feeling about it. Especially since they made sure you understood one was a god with godly looks and scary tent**les and the other was a human with a weak mind and body that may collapse if he stared for too long. So even when there was a heart pounding in the text, it could have gone either way. Was it because he was scared or because he finds himself falling for him?

even when he saw there future, that only leveled up to a "there's no way that will happen, he's a god and he would never feel that way about me" then that was thrown to the back of his mind and only looked upon when the two were confessing. So it felt like it was sprung on us. That's not to say the interactions weren't cute, because they were, but it was more in a "because I know this is the cp, I ship them even tho the feelings haven't gotten there yet" sorta vibe.

I'm not sure if that makes sense, but again, that's more of an opinion that made the whole build up feel lackluster in the long run.

because of the two cons I had with this I'm giving this read a 4.5 on the low end, I enjoyed it, but the ending and everything combined just kind of left me wanting more. I guess. <<less

Too OP that it doesn't feel good. Too much but other than that it's okay.

They made the world depends on him too much that it makes you wonder why MU even exist or the dragon corp. They just act like nannies for the MC. Everyone wants to be his friend. Maybe because of azathoth that's why the world revolves around him.

𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧: the romance is really late, not as in a slow-burn, but as in the first 100~ chapters don’t really have romance in it. If you like a more romance focused story, you can just skip this one. This is a BL, but not a romance story.

It’s way better than what I expected from this novel. I know close to nothing about Lovecraft beside his cat and Cthulhu (and some gods here and there), but even then I can tell it’s the Lovecraft mythology is heavy here. There’s also... more>> some random gods from other myths mixed in, some Chinese ones and some Greek (Roman?) ones like Apollo. There’s also a lot of stuff ranging from imaginary personas to being able to communicate with dead people (Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and mythical dead (?) people). There’s a lot of different stuff in this novel but it’s executed brilliantly, and I had fun reading this novel while being able to understand what was going on despite a lot of elements in this novel. All my knowledge of Lovecraft comes from browsing the internet, and I have not read a single book of his. It didn’t affect my reading experience, and it was still a great novel for me, though i’m sure understanding more about Lovecraft mythology would help understand the novel more. Overall, a great novel that I had fun reading. <<less

It is heavily based on Lovecraft myth. I love the arcs, the MC and the way the plot went. And tbh I didn't realize it was ending until I reached the one lmao.

Either you embrace the chuuni or you die from cringe.

I’m sorry to say that this book which is rated pretty much 5 stars is too much for me to bear, and here’s the reason why: it reads like a fanfiction written by a middle schooler on either fanfiction. net or wattpad. To be honest it’s something I had in my mind but didn’t write down when I was that age so it’s just very painful for me reading this while guessing what kind of intentions the author might have. Imagine... more>> you’re a poor kid living alone but having superpowers and then gets discovered and your whole world changes, from a dilapidated apartment to a fancy loft in the middle of a city with river view and 5-star michelin meals served at all times, everyone in your new workplace loves and takes care of you, everybody in the magical world pays attention to you... this is simply Harry Potter minus any hardship. Can you see how wish-fulfilling it is? Now i’m not gonna criticize all wish-fulfilling fics but my preference just tells me that it’s too cringey to suffer through.

And don’t you hate japanese anime protagonists who try to stay low profile but dang it fate just won’t have it they’re just too special not to be noticed, our MC here arrives at the school (h—warts) and draws everyone’s eyes the moment he lands. Apparently nobody in the history of the school had been able to fight back a magical bird before and MC is apparently the first one. Oh and don’t get me started on the ML, I was guessing since the author likes to play it big it can’t be the guys who picked him up and brought him into his new life right? That seems too normal, even though plot wise it would really make sense that romance could develop because they literally became the first people he could rely on? But nooo they’re too normal (despite being monarch level or whatever) the ML is wayyy flashier than that.

Spoiler

it’s an Outer God or something lol. The author spent half a chapter having Charles Darwin explain how special the ML is, iirc he says: there are gods born from myths, but more special are real gods, even MORE special is the Outer God, literally something like Chaos from Greek mythology, the lord of space and time. And that guy who’s lived for as long as the universe exists falls for MC... lol

[collapse]

Another reviewer mentioned it too, it was fine up until the author literally almost copied Hogwarts and threw a bunch of well-known names (Newton, Darwin, Chinese philosopher, the headmaster pretty much a toned down version of Dumbledore) while trying to worldbuild. I got bored of those few chapters full of info dump because there was nothing new, it’s just a hotpot of Hogwarts and Lovecraft, nothing was original. Prior to that the MC was told he wouldn’t be studying there for long as well, he wanted to attend an elite Chinese university (Tsinghua) so if it isn’t that important to MC, why should I care about all that worldbuilding?

So, uh, read at your own risk. (I got lured in by the high rating but I guess I’m just too picky lol) <<less

Before reading this novel, I didn't even know what the heck Lovecraft was. I dove straight in all confused and messed up. Honestly, this is one of best concepts I have ever seen for any novel, not just BL. It includes the author's unique take on gods and such and what I love the most is that there is not much nationalism.

The plot is 10/10 and the character designs/developments are just superb. We can really see how the ML changes from an arrogant, emotionless god into a wife-s*ave. Despite all... more>> the hardships he had to go through, the MC still retained the "humanity" in him and I really appreciate him for that.

P.S. For those who said there was virtually no romance, they are dead wrong. Well, actually, maybe it is actually like that for them, but to me, there are lots of hints of romance in the story and all the interactions between the main CP hold a thousand meanings. Also,

I agree that the romance is barely there. And the author should have elaborate the arcs more. Its like all over the place. And the ML has a well developed character, we know his personality and why. Based on the Cthulhu universe, it is very well written, well translated with coherent characters and story. Author says it's a chuunibyou novel and indeed it is one! This is a chuunibyou's dream come true! It's similar to countless shounen animes but with a lot of Cthulhu lore mixed in and some Greek mythology, Chinese legends and Steampunk England. There are also a lot of pop culture references.

MC is a typical anime chuuni, ordinary school boy with a special ability, introverted, math-obsessed, reclusive and somewhat antisocial. ML is an OP... more>> evil god, with a big family of evil gods. This novel is a fun portrayal of several Gods and their unique lifestyle, mindset and also unique hobbies lol...

Romance was slow and consistent with their identities. You will only get the fluff in the last 30chapters or so. I loved this unique CP of human with evil God. Their relationship dynamic is quite interesting and unconventional. <<less

To begin this review, I'd like to caution new readers who don't read tags that this is not a world-hopping novel. I assumed it was that type of setting as well because I don't read the tags, but I'm disappointed to say that the contained magic in the summary is only related to his power. So, if you're expecting a world-hopping novel in which the main character's identity changes every arc, you're mistaken.

The novel contains numerous references to H. P. Lovecraft's works. The author mentioned that you didn't really need... more>> to read his books to understand, but I'd like to disagree because reading this was such a confusing ride. It's not so much that it doesn't explain descriptions properly but it's that the vague yet detailed explanations leave you perplexed.

Our protagonist is not the best, but he is also not the worst. His morals are clear and principled, and he would give his life to protect the Earth if necessary. What I don't like about his character is that he's a little ditzy and s*upid. In the novel, he's obsessed with the college entrance exams, even though passing them won't help him at all. He doesn't interact with many other human side characters, which causes him to be closed off and have trust issues.

Our male lead, on the other hand, felt distant and impassive as a character. We never got to see him much, and even when we did, he mostly just felt like a side character. We never got to see any in-depth development, but I suppose that makes sense given his position in the novel. But I'd just like to see more detailed and clear writing of him because he felt so uncomfortable to me and out of reach, if that makes sense?

In terms of the romance subplot, you might as well say it doesn't exist. Only about 20 of those chapters were probably romantic in nature. I really don't understand how the male lead fell in love with the main character; given his special role in the novel, I expected it to take a little more and a little longer to make him fall in 'love'. But I suppose that makes sense because, aside from the simple yet heartwarming stuff, the main character can't really do anything to make the unperturbed male lead like him. This novel is very plot focused, so if you're looking for romance, you'll be disappointed.

The side characers also felt bland. I'm talking about the human ones, who were just as nonexistent as the romance. They didn't add anything to the story or plot, and it felt like they were only there to interact with the main character to keep the readers from becoming bored. Even in terms of interaction, there wasn't much going on. They were mostly boring and forgetful.

The non-humans, on the other hand, were just slightly better in terms of interaction and character than the former. It also makes sense given that the majority of the novel focuses on supernatural and higher-dimensional deities. But I still think some of them could have been more involved in situations.

The only reason I give this four stars despite my seemingly negative review is the world building and the plot. They are the only aspects of this novel that I am certain were enjoyable. The vast and never-ending thought of the universe and the uniqueness of the main character's power is a wonderful aspect. It's a shame it wasn't written in greater detail and put to better use.

Overall, a well-paced novel that can be used as a light introduction to works by H. P. Lovecraft <<less
