Cupful of Spilt Water

Xin Qianyu: Everyone thinks I don’t deserve you. I’m afraid even you think so.

Su Zhong: I have never thought that.

Xin Qianyu: Maybe you’ve never realized that when I’m with you, you always ignore me. It’s all because I’m clinging to you. I don’t want to be this way anymore.

Su Zhong: Then don’t be this way anymore.

It’s my turn to cling to you instead.

To put it simply, it’s a story of “a dignified, cool gong and a humble shou dating, then the humble shou was no longer humble and they broke up; the gong was also no longer dignified and cool, went after him and they got back together”.

For me the story plot moves at a slow pace with lots of family in fighting. This to be expected when wealthy family are part of the plot.

As with all relationships there is always misunderstanding because of a person's character. This one is worst since the male lead's character is like a block of wood.

I find the ending to be a bit abrupt. I think an extra chapter would help prevent the story feeling like it was chop off at the end because the writer did not know how to... more>> end the story. <<less

It has been a while that a I read a bl romance with a ML who's not a complete scum. It was pretty obvious from the start that the ML was just not good at understanding social cues and had psychological problems. He even goes to a psychologist to fix his issues when he and MC break up.

I do understand the frustrations that the MC felt because of his relationship through.

Overall I find the romance pretty good.

The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is because of... more>> the ending. It felt so abrupt. The MC and ML weren't even officially together yet. And it didn't even end with them talking but their relatives. It also didn't really felt like the main conflict was properly resolved.

I wanted to see more of the main couple.

Edit: I read the manhua adaptation and it has a more fitting ending with the ML proposing and all. I am glad the manhua changed the ending. <<less

MTLed it on gongzicp a while ago. It's a pretty good/light crematorium novel. The ML is emotionally stunted, and while he loves the MC, he can't really express it.
Spoiler

The MC feels he is constantly hitting a wall, so he decides to leave to the US. Then the ML slowly learns to express his feelings, even goes to a psychiatrist and then starts chasing the MC across the ocean.

[collapse]
The ML is not really scum, so he's nothing like the famous 188 boy's group.

"When Su Zhong saw that Xin Qianyu was asleep, he put a blanket on him before gently taking out the rose bouquet from under the bed. He silently threw it away.

Seeing the rose petals flutter into the tr*sh can, Su Zhong stood in a daze for a long time before turning back to the studio.

Back in the hall, Xin Qianyu was still asleep.

... more>> Su Zhong sat next to him, gently held Xin Qianyu's hand, and carefully took out the wedding ring from his pocket. He slowly put it on him, and muttered, "I swear that I will only love you forever in the future. Whether in health or illness, I will never leave you until death separates us.""

There were a lot of lines in this novel, but I think the one that hit me the hardest was this one. Just seeing our reticent ML confess his feelings to our MC quietly made me tear up.

It's been a while since I've rated something 5 stars, but this one deserves it. My heart was in my throat as I started this novel and realized we had a couple who loved each other but needed much self improvement first.

Spoiler

Seeing the MC stray from his true self to love the ML hurt. Seeing the MC feel small next to the ML hurt. Seeing the MC realize the ML never took into his consideration his likes or dislikes hurt.

[collapse]

It should be known that the ML has a social disorder and he's not a scum by any means. But communication is a big issue in the beginning and our ML's lack of it contributes to the break-up a lot. The distance was needed for both the MC to regain his original flow and ML to reflect and grow. And it makes it all the better when we see the ML chase the MC later on and start improving and reflecting on himself. The scene I listed was one of the many heart-warming scenes in the second arc of the story. This couple is worth reading all the way through. They're human. They have flaws. But they push each other to grow.

I tend to avoid emotional novels that involve a break-up. But this one is just worth it. It makes me feel and man... it's just overall lovely. Two characters trying to understand each other while in love. That's all there is to it.

AND the ENDING (read only if you've finished so the cute emotional impact is bigger)

Spoiler

Like.. the fact that the ML heard something written by a Chinese poet that basically said "the east does not flow to the west to return to the water; the flowers fall and are ashamed of the forest" which meant that those who break up and get back together will not succeed, which somewhat relates to our cupful of spilt water title.

ML, regardless of hating that metaphor, thought our MC liked the calligraphy and brought that piece home. AND THE FACT THAT HE PROPOSES WITH A MANMADE RIVER THAT CAN FLOW EAST TO THE WEST + SOME ENGINEERED CUP THAT ALTHOUGH WITH WATER SPILT SIPS THAT WATER RIGHT BACK UP IN AN ENDLESS CYCLE is just so romantic.

THAT was our MC's main worry. He was worried about the relationship not being the same now that they've broken up. He was anxious and uncertain. The poet's words symbolized that. Although our ML is dense, he was able to create this beautiful reassurance that told the MC everything would be fine. Sniff. I'm ok.

this novel... is an injustice to the romance genre. what romance? the story ends abruptly before the romance can even start.

i came here to see a willful MC because it's funny. I like mc's tiger-like personality and stuck around for that but this novel leaves so much to be desired. anyway, for my criticisms:

1: the ML clearly seems to be on the spectrum and while it is eventually addressed, the framing of it being his 'wrong' in his relationship with the MC is just ableist as hell. it's not wrong... more>> for the MC to expect things from his partner but if he knows the ML can't do all that, why the f*ck is he being unreasonable? why's the entire story framed as if the MC was wronged so badly when it's just a case of a neurotypical dating someone neurodivergent and not knowing the implications of it??? I'm a lot like the MC but what differentiates us is that I completely disagree that the ML had to be "woken up" like that. he wasn't saying what he felt. he knew the ml's personality but just bottled everything up on his own and then just exploded one day.

2: the story ends in the rising action. idk if I should be grateful that it didn't end at the climax or not. because of this, the MC and ML don't even get to properly resolve their issues, we don't know what happens to the old man, the uncle, the cousin, and everyone else. we never hear the MC even once apologize sincerely for his own mistakes. he acknowledges them but never actually sits the ML down to talk about it.

in conclusion, it had great potential for a light read but it just lost itself. I wouldn't call the two going on dates and failed proposals romance when, at the same time, they're avoiding discussing the state of their relationship. it's just s*upid.

i wish reviewers were more responsible and not afraid to give lower ratings. the rave reviews convinced me that despite the abrupt ending, it would feel substantial but I feel like I just ate a slice of bread for 100 bucks when I could have a huge rice bowl for a dollar and fifty instead. well. another novel I wouldn't recommend or read again. <<less

A sweet and of reasonable length story.

Although the summary and the beginning of the story make the ML look really bad, this is not the case. The MC realises that he had his faults and made mistakes in their relationship as well; they both undergo a journey of personal development - both for themselves and for the other.

Spoiler

The ML works on trying to improve his EQ and better understand social cues. He takes into consideration what the MC likes and starts picking up hobbies to please the MC.

The MC works to become financially successful and independent in his own right and learns that he has to communicate with the ML better.

I also really liked how all the significant antagonists

redeemed themselves.

The has also author done her research on businesses and the finance and banking sector. Everything regarding the ML's job and the MC's company was logical and well thought out.

One plot point that slightly irked me was that
Spoiler

when the MC was dealing with his grandpa, he had to use the ML's help. Although I understand why, I feel like him overcoming this obstacle in his own would have been more significant in terms of his personal growth.

[collapse]

The author also never mentioned anything about the MC's dad, which I consider a plot hole - though not a major one.

Overall, it was an easy to read and sweet story. There were no obvious clichés or dog blood plots. The MTL was also really easy to understand. <<less

This novel was amazing. I couldn't stop reading it all night. I loved MC, he was smart and emotional, and ML's development was very good, even the best. Everything happens for a reason, please read it, I wish there was an extra chapter, that's my only regret.
