This novel is not bad. Not bad for a Chinese novel, of course. The start is pretty generic, with a few thugs stalking the first love interest with nefarious purposes — aka r*pe. Now, leaving that tidbit aside, reading on, you can see that the novel is actually 'kinda' solid if I want to be generous. It has the potential to become something, let's say, fairly interesting. The problem is that it's unbearably boring; not to mention annoying at some parts.

The main character is a genius when it comes to... more>> cultivation. In fact, when he was young he attained the highest cultivation realm possible on Earth. After he teleported to another realm, where cultivation was a prevalent thing, he cultivated assiduously for 80 years before he reached the peak of that world as well, and got stuck on a bottleneck. Now back on Earth, he aims to integrate himself back into civilization in the hopes of untying the knots in his heart, and attempt the breakthrough.

He's over 100 years old, and pretty much the strongest being on Earth. I love overpowered protagonists. It makes you feel more satisfied when the antagonist gets his comeuppance right away, instead of bearing with his schemes for hundreds of chapters. Typical 'how dare you offend me' plot.

However, it doesn't really work here. The main character can't kill people in broad daylight, and so far the story has been mushy with no interesting plotline besides saving beauties, beating kids in basketball, and going to work. Then the first one-dimensional antagonist appears. Now being in a modern world, you can see that he's someone who's rich, and probably with a lot of influence. He also wants to bang the chick the main character saved from being r*ped (the same chick who hired the main character to work for her small company that is conveniently only made up of women).

Moving on...

The girl rejects the antagonist > the antagonist pouts and gets angry > the antagonist sends a few thugs to scare the girls of the company — aka grope them and incite them into s*x > the MC beats the hell out of them > the MC then beats the antagonist as well and threatens him > the antagonist is terrified of his strength > the antagonist all of a sudden doesn't give a f*ck and wants revenge.

Do you see where this is going?

Of course, let's give credit where it's due. There has been a surprisingly lack of young masters in 38 chapters. And this dude is the first one — not counting the rapists at the start of the novel. But the trend is there, unfortunately. And it's not like the main character can kill them despite being the Second Coming of Jesus Christ on Earth. His threat was pretty much an empty fart, and coming back from a cultivation realm, I hoped he would have taken more drastic measures to ensure the girls' safety. It's satisfying seeing the MC wreck arrogant bastards, but it's even more annoying seeing them get away scot-free, knowing that they are scheming in the shadows.

Also... with the introduction of Ninjas, it seems this novel will become a lost cause with nationalism, racism, and all of that bullcrap. Usually, I don't mind it. But I'm just putting it here in case you don't like it.

Spoiler

"Now, after more than 80 years, he had once again seen Ninjas and was chasing after his fellow brethren at that. Regardless of the identity of the woman and why she was being hunted down, in Yin Xiu's eyes, those Ninjas should be killed!"

[collapse]

... this is from chapter 38. It might be a bit justified because back when he was on Earth he fought against Ninjas invaders. But damn... no questions. The woman could have killed those Ninjas' families, and she'd still be an angel because she's Chinese. Well, I don't really care about that...

The novel has a cool light-hearted feeling, but it's tasteless... the main character's goal can be seen as sight-seeing Earth after 80 years. Admittedly, it's too early to judge, and I'm not going to say, "Don't read it, itz tr*shh" I actually enjoyed it a bit, but I don't see it being as satisfying as I was hoping it would be. Overall I'd say give it a try and see for yourself. I can see many people enjoying this, but after reading hundreds of similar novels, I can only say that it's generic, not bad, but still a dish I've eaten way too times.

The translation at the start is a bit rough with the translator switching between the present and past tense (sometimes even in the same sentence). Thankfully it becomes better. <<less

An enjoyable read if one is looking to read something quiet with a little action and excitement.

Points to consider from the novel

  • The plot takes place more in the modern world with cultivation than in the world of cultivation.
  • Focused more on daily life than on fights. There are also fights at all levels but it is not the focus as in other novels where the character has to fight in order to progress or fulfill a goal.
  • The villains or those who are on the opposite side of the MC are not the fools who rush to the slaughterhouse.
  • There are some chapters that contain Chinese nationalism but if they are skipped it does not affect the plot almost nothing, it depends on the point of view of each one there may be some excessive things or incoherent justifications but that should be considered when they read.
  • Romance is super miniscule, it is in the background and progresses very very slowly.
