One day, Song Shuhang was suddenly added to a chat group with many seniors that suffered from chuuni disease. The people inside the group would call each other ‘Fellow Daoist’ and had all different kinds of titles: Palace Master, Cave Lord, True Monarch, Immortal Master, etc. And even the pet of the founder of the group that had run away from home was called ‘monster dog’. They would talk all day about pill refining, exploring ancient ruins, or share their experience on techniques.

However, after lurking inside the group for a while, he discovered that not all was what it seemed…

This is the shit! This story has almost killed me by asphyxiation from laughing on multiple occasions. The pacing speed is ingenious, the story always flows naturally, characters are great, world building is superb, mix between cultivation and modern day is amazing, and tons of chapters are packed into a very short and detailed amount of time, in universe, so it feels like the main character is living an INSANE life style and it's fun as hell. The only flaw I can think of is that fights don't happen frequently... more>> and then when they do it's hardly ever the main character fighting, to me this is tenuous and inconsequential but I know it can be a deal breaker for some others so I put it as a flaw. Great story, ten out of ten. <<less

This novel I am going to say is good, it true that its good I enjoyed it a lot, the characters are interesting the entire plot of the story seems intriguing but I will say this chapters 1-50 great and you will enjoy binging them truly you will, chapters 51-75, I dont know why but the quality of the story drops around these parts so heavily that it took me 2 and a half weeks to get through these I am unsure whether it is similarly for others but once... more>> I got to c76 I didnt feel like I was forcing myself to read it any more and the quality started increasing once again so much that I am already thinking of lnmtl'ing it.

so fair warning about c51-75 anything before those chapters and after until 103 are great.

the main character is quite enjoyable, the side characters are fun and the cultivation seems interesting as well. <<less

Another good modern xianxia, mainly because:
- The main character isn't an arrogant moron, but a kind yet resolute character.
- So far, the story is neither too fast nor too slow, and takes time to develop many characters besides the main one.
- You get to see kindness and friendship in a Chinese xianxia, and it's really refreshing.

For those who want to know more, think of that story as a mix between "The Breaker" and "Angel Densetsu".

I'm not going to delve much into details, bcoz that would be somewhat spoilerish, and I haven't finished reading, anyway.

Anyway, it's so good that I've actually started reading MTL after hesitating a lot (I'd rather read the TL, but the translator seems to have some issues lately). The comedy is top-notch (esp. when the author jokes about the cultivation tropes). The MC is likeable and realistic
... more>>
Spoiler

apart from his, so far, non-existing or almost non-existing libido, but its somewhat offset by other characters noticing it once or twice while disbelieving it; if the author themselves didn't show that they realize it, it'd be worse, and this way at least I can accept it somewhat; also, there's a dao companion tag here, so maybe it'll change somewhat? MC still doesn't have one right now though, but I can rather easily guess who it'll be due to some hints

[collapse]

Spoiler

as well as smart and balanced (not some psycho mu*derer many readers dislike) ; other characters are often unique and difficult to forget (aside from a handful of them) and even antagonists are well-made. The way the author avoids some tropes and makes fun of them is simply godlike. He/she also has many refreshing ideas. I also want to emphasize that side characters are quite well-made and not contrived, and that includes the female characters which are often f*cked up in such novels (the female lead isn't perhaps as well made as Nightingale/Veronica seems to be, based on what is now TL'ed of Release that Witch that is, but she isn't too far behind; though I have to mention that I'm basing my appraisal of these two characters on whether they feel real and not theory)

[collapse]

Long story short, I've read many stories and am quite picky, but so far, this story definitely deserves a place in my top 5 favorites. I can easily recommend it to others who are interested to read a good comedy or parody of cultivation tropes.

Edit after ch 587
Spoiler

Well, damn. I was wrong, it seems that the author was simply trolling the readers with those hints, and the actual female lead turned out to be someone else entirely, lol. Although the romance is still considerably better than the likes of IET or True Martial World, in the end its the usual I-have-no-f*cking-idea-how-to-write-about-having-a-girlfriend-so-it's-time-to-separate-the-MC-and-his-lover crap... Well, it turned out this way in the last chapter, and looking at the index, there was some mention of dat gurl in a title of a chapter sth like 100 chapters later, plus there's a hint that it may not be that bad. Well, romance is the only thing I found lacking so far, though.
Apart from that, let me add that the author has a brilliant ability to use events from tens or even hundreds of chapters ago to create funny situations, and I can't recall even a single character which is still alive and has been forgotten. This author really does well at avoiding much crap most authors give us.

No doubt this has quickly become one of my favourite novels. Cultivation chat group is such a great play on traditional Xuanxia. Its modern and a real breath of fresh air from other Xuanxia that have become stale and repeatitive. Theres a great deal of misunderstandings and comedy and a result of it. I absolutely reccomend this to anyone whose tired of the traditional Xuanxia and wants unpredictability in their novels while also having a healthy amount of dialogue.

The story is light and amusing! The MC is very likeable and the premise of the story is interesting.
Spoiler

I like hard-working MCs the most. Also the plot starts with the MC being weak and everyone surrounding him is OP (of course disregarding the normies). So it's a change for once. Or not? On second thoughts MC is smack right in the middle of normal humans and OP cultivators haha.

[collapse]

The story is relatively slow paced but I think the details and stuff that were explained were necessary and were not hard to read through unlike other stories. I don't normally read Xianxia's but I find this novel awesome. Translator is also doing a great job. ?

Just read ch 41. Not only is it an interesting premise but also the author doesn't rush the plot too much,
Spoiler

I say this because MC has three lucky encounters

[collapse]
So instead everything progresses somewhat logically making the world building and character building really good. If the author keeps this up with regards to the plot and doesn't rush anything then its definitely going to be a good read. So here's to hoping the author doesn't mess up anywhere because this story has lots of potential.

I went into this not waiting for much, but it was a pleasant surprise.

The writing style is somewhat slow, but it fits the "relaxed" feel the story is giving, and the translation is using proper english phrases, making it easy to read and enjoy.

Admitedly, it's not an award winning story, and it's a bit cheesy, but it's a different take on the whole "cultivation world" genre (wuxia/xanxia), in a modern world, from the point of view of a normal student.

That said, if you don't like stories that base the whole... more>> thing on misunderstandings and "plot" luck, it might not be for you, as that's all it is up to what is currently translated. <<less

I have read this 3 times cover to cover, including following it chapter by chapter as it was being written in Chinese. Each time, I still enjoyed the hijinks and hilarity that Baba Song goes through. It is not perfect but it is singular. I have never found another chinese webnovel aside from Ze Tian Ji and TKA that left me with that complex and bittersweet melange of satisfaction and loss at finishing a work. I was really saddened to say goodbye to that cast of characters that brought me... more>> so much fun and laughs throughout my busy and draining years in graduate school.

This work is not for those who seek only those edge lord OP MCs who keep getting stronger and stronger leaving everyone behind in various corners of a world/s. Earth is full of people from the weakest mortals to the strongest immortals. Shuhang (and us readers) gets to meet and encounter experts of all levels pretty early on. This is already a marked distinction as the power levels are pretty clear to us in comparison to the seemingly never-ending ascensions to succeeding worlds. Shuhang's MC fate pulled him into the titular chat group with mid-level practitioners... then his early game-breaking ability introduces us to the highest echelons of power before he even faces his first heavenly tribulation when he crossed to the 3rd stage. <<less

My man really wrote the whole review forgetting what genre the novel is.

CCG is a comedy novel with cultivation in it, not the other way around, sure you may not like the humor, but that doesn't mean it is a bad novel.

For example, let's take yours. You said that Shuhang didn't clear the misunderstanding but so what, the novel is a comedy built on misunderstanding, that is what most comedy is. The situation they were put in make a good comedic moment and it was funny, which means the author... more>> succeed in what he wanted to do.

Shuhang didn't need to do that because most other members in that tribulation were already at death's door, so they need to be controlled and perform the technique, Shuhang, on the other hand, have been protected by his Lamia this whole time. Shuhang didn't do it just because he is the MC, he didn't do the posture because he had what is needed to survive through all this. And if you read the novel you would know, Shuhang always has the means to survive. Now for people that don't read CCG, they might think that it is "Deus x Machina", but no, all things he needs are prepared long before he needs to use them, the author didn't pull them out of his ass, CCG has amazing story building and foreshowing

Also, not important but might as well say it, you said that Shuhang didn't clear the misunderstanding but you also forgot what happened before that, literally before one of the people in the tribulation was about to give up, he told Shuhang to give out his will to all the Fairy in the group, to said that he kinda has a crush on all of them. Shuhang even agrees to this, but later when they survive, afraid that Shuhang would still tell the secret, the person tried to talk Shuhang out of it, and what did Shuhang do next, he showed an "oh, I just remembered that" expression, my man literally forgot about an important will. Shuhang is built to be dumb, did you not pick up on that, his nickname and spirit ghost's nickname is "slow-witted Song". You are criticizing a dumb/comedic character for being what he is created for, Shuhang is by all means and purposes a dumbass, and that adds on to, say it with me now, COMEDY

another example, when the group comes together at jiaojiao's mansion before that Shuhang have one of his senior, an immortal cook, cook a full court for him. In the progress of waiting he ate it with Sixteen, and little Shi. After the senior arrive, he invited them to eat because they are immortal level cooking, and it can help boost their cultivation but he forgot to mention that it was cooked by an immortal cook so the senior wasn't interested in it. This shows that Shuhang has the best intention but because he is dumb and airhead, he forgot to tell them. Further showing his dumbness isn't a plothole but is a character trait, because he is the Main Character of a comedy novel

the story is funny as hell thanks to these misunderstanding

So people, please remember this, CCG is first and foremost a comedy novel. The author succeeds in this beautifully, CCG isn't a milestone for its type of genre for nothing, it the best novel of the "modern chat type+comedy genre" <<less

Sorry for my grammar. This cultivation novel that is set in modern setting is my most favorite novel (cultivation) because the MC is good. The other characters are also good especially White & White 2. The other reason I love this novel is because of its humor and it's not cringy like the harem novels + cultivation that I can't really read with my eyes. As I said, good setting, world background, and characters.

This novel is something that the reader is always asking for more.

It has pretty funny jokes,

The setting is fantastic,

... more>> Characters don't exude annoyance,

Overall this novel is different from other CN cultivation, and if you like friendly stories that have some action and cool powers this is a great pick up.

NOW there are some RED flags that should be mentioned when you read. Firstly, the content of some of the jokes made is straight garbage. Maybe if I could read Chinese the jokes would be better but the hate towards certain groups of people shown in this novel is cringe. For example, because people cultivate that end of looking better than normal people, and one male character is so hot that people think that he is c*rosdressing so they use certain words that are insults and whatnot. Another character is black and likes dogs so there are a couple of jokes because of that. If you skip all of the dumb parts you are left with what I think is a refreshing story. The system used is not complex, and anyone can pick up this story even if they have no experience with other cultivation novels. <<less

I picked up Cultivation Chat Group when I found it as a recommendation for those that enjoyed Crazy Detective. Wanted something equally grounded in a world where the characters, while extraordinary, were not silly or immature. Sadly, that's not what I found. Cultivation Chat Group only held my disbelief for the first two hundred chapters before jumping the shark.

The main character is a college student. Ordinary by most metrics, he gets pulled, by mistake, into a chat group of senior cultivators. Right away, I was hooked on the concept:... more>> that cultivators have to adapt to modern times and would benefit from and enjoy the structure of a chat group. And our protagonist is not instantly bowled over but instead skeptical of the idea that real 'immortals' exist among us. Once he's convinced, he's cautious and considered in how he joins up and proceeds. He's smart, brave, kind, and adaptable. So far, he's what I look for in a protagonist.

Inevitably, the main character begins to cultivate himself and he comes into contact with those seniors from the chat group. That's where things take a turn for me. I can understand when a senior cultivator is silly, or kind. But these characters, which I am to believe have lives for hundreds of years, and have incredible power, are dumb, emotionally immature, and reckless. Our hero, an 18 year old student, becomes the most steady and mature out of the group. I find that impossible to swallow. The senior cultivators also fall all over themselves to give gifts and grant favors to the main character as well. Keep in mind, most of them come from 'big sects' and have many disciples. Why are they lavishing all of their attentions on a kid they've known literally for a couple of days.

I will read on for a bit, but I feel that the novel has lost me, and that I will soon be on the prowl for a new read. <<less

Honestly, it was way too slow paced for me and I’m honestly astonished at how far I read back when I was new to novels. Basically, I read it earnestly in the first hundred chapters or so. Reading became quite the chore after about chapter 600 or so. I don’t fully remember so give or take 100 chapters. The arcs are too drawn out imo. I don’t exactly remember since last I read this was a year ago, but I felt like there was too much stuff happening. There was... more>> too much explanation of these things happening, and MC is way too weak even at chap 1000. He’s only at the fourth level at chap 1000 and I expect his progression to get even slower. The comedy went stale for me after a few hundred chapters. Some things take way longer than they should i.e.

Spoiler

the sage tribulation

[collapse]

That small snippet took 10 to 30 chapters. The MC is too weak (ik I already said) and when his seniors toy with him, it’s just seems too forced and is only really meant to move the plot forward i.e.

I really didn’t mean to write something so long, but the memories just came flooding back while writing. There would be more to write, but I just felt like I took too long already. 3/5 <<less

Freakin' worst story, it lasts forever and goes nowhere. You will like this story if you think sitting with strange taxi driver and listening to strange stories for a week, sounds like a great idea. SPOILERS FOLLOW

Honestly, the writing is catchy because there are lots of entertaining stories. However, the story is so madcap and pointless; the MC has no goal, other than to survive and try to regulate all the bizarre stuff the author throws at him. The story is complete nonsense and designed in such a way that... more>> it can really go on forever, and never end, because there is no goal, and things repeat themselves, because it is complete craziness and designed such that the situations are repetitions, and keep the readers reading, and it never ends, because the MC has no goal, and the story... you get the idea?

All of the characters are insane... a "master" who is so beautiful that men regularly have homos*xual thoughts when they see him, an immoral chef who cooks sentient animals and vegetables (and everyone wants to attend her dinners), a guy who calls himself Thrice Reckless because he knowingly does reckless stuff, a talking dog who is being forced into a same-s*x marriage as a punishment by his irresponsible owner...

The cultivator can't have anything happen normally; his master is a nexus of bizarre luck (unlucky for everyone around him). His inner core is transformed into a swimming whale. He gets a spirit servant (supposed to be non-sentient) who is sentient and disappears through a wormhole to another time... then replaced by a girl he was dating; needless to say that his girlfriend/second spirit servant also doesn't listen to him. He acquires a light of virtue for his good deeds that, for unknown reasons, transforms itself into a sentient lamia creature that resembles and acts like an ancient cultivator... and of course doesn't follow the MCs instructions; did I mention that his light of virtue wants to have a lesbian love affair with his second spirit/girlfriend? The first spirit, meanwhile, is running around making enemies and, we discover, was a key figure in the destruction of the ancient cultivation world, and did a lot of messed up things relying on his "master" to fix thousands of years later... thanks spirit servant!!!

The main characters is the only one who tries to do things logically. However, he is constantly thwarted by all the bizarre characters around him, such that no plots in the story progress in a logical manner. The "hidden" "secret" plots in the story are thin and predictable, such that the author frequently creates situations where the reader is 99% sure it will be concluded or revealed, but at the last second... nope; for no good reason, the author decides to bury the resolution in a jelly donut tempest, or a lightning tribulation made from fighter jets, or a sentient blob of poison fighting against our MC who was turned into a sentient blob by a evolved cultivating cat (yes, 2 of 3 of those are actual examples of things I've read).

If you are determined to read this KIND of story, perhaps consider reading one that has ended and is fully translated. I think it is completely realistic to expect that this author will never end the MCs torture, because it is his livelihood, and a complete translation (and resolution to the story's madness) will never be written. <<less

It's not funny at all. Not even once did I laugh. Rather childish.

Expected good slice of life comedy, but I got boring chat conversations.

What did I have high expectations of this novel, with it being so hyped some years ago? I should've known most of these hyped novels on wuxiaworld turned out to be mediocre or unbearable later on but their skewed reviews remained, and this novel fits this criteria.

Noveulupdates sometimes creeps me out. Yaoi, shounen-ai, gender bender, female lead and hyped novels have 4.5+ ratings despite being crap and... more>> poop, while real gems have 3.5-4.2 ratings. And because of that I have to read all reviews there, on other sites and also check the tags carefully...

If you want funny but at the same time serious novel check out The First Order. <<less

This is a spin-off from normal Xianxia genre. Before I say anything, let me give a brief explanation on what Xianxia means. Xianxia is a genre that focuses on the MC embarking on cultivation to be the peak of the celestials (gods). 95% of all MC in Xianxia novels are ruthless, serious, bloodthirsty, vengeful and cares nothing for the life of others.

However, cultivators in this novel instead is made to be happy-go-lucky for most of the part. Sure, those who read normal Xianxia genres before would find this weird and... more>> hard to adapt. But, this is exactly what the author wanted to do. He went and did the opposite of what the Xianxia genres are famous for.

Thus, this is actually a pretty comedic and less serious slice of life story. If you expect it to be something serious and action packed, go somewhere else. This novel is akin to the Gintama manga/anime. It's mostly comedy episodes but serious episodes will also be packed in between, of course with some comedy too.

Thus, get your priorities straight. This is a relaxing and comedic slice of life novel. Like all Chinese novels, the latter parts aren't that good anymore but this novel is still not that bad in overall. <<less

For most novel out here in NU many started with an intriguing plot but within 100~200 chapters it become rinse and repeat by the author with a cliche settings and muddle headed MC, or just going complete bonkers with face slapping, by 500~ chapters the story become mediocre at most, and by c1000~ it become more of a headache to continue reading.

But CCG is different, I'm currently at C2771 and I can vouch for the novel that each new chapter make you just more intrigued and wanting for more.

It's not... more>> a perfect novel by all means because perfection is subjective to everyone view but it's really an excellent work by author with a weak yet op MC, great supporting characters, bucket load full of misunderstandings, face slapping, comedy, epic action scene, budding romance and craziness to ultimate level. <<less

Surprisingly entertaining and funny. It doesn't get repetitive like a lot of long stories and the author is always introducing another element that's interesting or funny. Slow development (not necessarily a bad thing). 755 chapters in though and probably only a third of the way through the story. Recommended!
