The author doesn't execute some themes and motivations well. In short they either feel forced and/or a matter of telling and not showing. But having said that it's an average read if you're into cultivation stories.

Spoiler

I can see why some people didn't like the dispute between father and son. On one hand it's somewhat believable that a parent without any experience could get off on the wrong foot... but this dude is waaaay beyond simply stubborn, conservative, or authoritarian. Honestly it gets annoying reading his dialog. He's really a broken record most of the time. Endlessly complaining about all the supposed faults of his son, how everyone is spoiling him, and how he's going to set him straight (and maybe kill him in the process). It's quite baffaling why anyone would have expectations for the MC after he's abandoned by his parents and practically raised by servants. The other sister in laws were supposed to take care of him but it didn't seem like they did much but the bare minimum. Never mind that none of his cousins seem to be be well behaved either, so I really have to wonder about the education (or lack thereof) polices of this family.

Though the real question is why any of this had to happen? It never really seemed like the MC wanted to become family head or that he really truly cared about getting poisoned. With such a dysfunctional family I probably would have at most incite internal conflict and leave the family while they were preoccupied. And of course I'd hide my skills. I'm a waste and a burden? Great! I can leave.

The whole arranged marriage thing seems forced too. Way to adopt another kid and neglect them too. Her flip flopping and changing her mind about spending her life with him is fine. People change. It's just that we don't really see that progression. She just later reappears in the story and chooses the sword instead. The weird thing is that the Father doesn't seem to care or even think about this betrothal other than to threaten the MC not to mistreat her.

So I actually read up to the current raws which is quite a feat bc I usually don't MTL xianxia novels, but this one was interesting and I really liked it. I don't know, maybe I'm just tired of the cold, emotionless mu*der machines that are MCs in most xianxias nowadays, but it's nice to see an MC who despite being smart and ruthless when he has to be, still has a heart and really does care for others. He has a lot of love to give and if you... more>> treat him well, he'll move mountains for you, but he's also kinda sensitive to getting hurt by those he cared about. Relatable haha.

He's a pretty chill guy fr. He just wants to do his own thing, even when he rises in cultivation he doesn't really care much for fame or status or power for the sake of it, he wants to be free and enjoy what life has to offer. It's refreshing to see an MC who basically says, "what's the point in dedicating your whole life to gaining strength and climbing up the tallest mountain of cultivation, only to be alone and have no good memories once you read the top?" He wants to cultivate, but he also wants to live. Ofc this is a xianxia story so he's going to rise in levels like crazy but's it's nice he never loses sight of that attitude.

To address the 1 star reviewer who gave the story a 1 star because of the father thing, let me give a different perspective:

Spoiler

The clues are there from the very start that his parents are pretty awful parents, even before his dad comes home. FOURTEEN years and they only sent a total of 7 letters back home. 7 freaking letters. No matter how busy you are fighting in a war, it's a long standing war and there will always be downtime. They just obviously never held the kid as a priority and never cared to know him let alone understand him. They didn't ever bother to ask him if he was happy or sad or lonely or what his favorite past time was or anything. They were absent parents for 14 years. Both the mom and dad suck.

Also, I've definitely seen these kinds of parents IRL so unfortunately I think it's kinda realistic. His dad is annoying, but it also fits with the personality he has: he's rigid and too focused on his own notions of morality, honor, and success, to the point he's not willing to see where his son is coming from.

[collapse]
I'm not too bothered by the dad because, and this is what I like about the novel, the people who DO care for the MC, love him to death. It's heartwarming and poetic when he forms a sort of found family with unlikely people based on common interests and pastimes and most importantly: sincerity. <<less

I liked the chill atmosphere and slightly different take on the "getting stronger without sweating" genre. MC gets stronger by playing chess, fishing with his uncle, cooking, painting etc. It was interesting enough to get me to read the raws.

Unfortunately, the reunion later between MC and his father was terrible and absolutely ruined it for me. I didn't think the author would write something like this. The father becomes irrationally pissed at MC for "goofing off" while he was away. And so for around 10 - 20 chapters, the MC... more>> and his dad just argue on and on in circles with neither side backing down, MC reveals his strength and things cool down a bit but then MC decides to take revenge by hurting the son of the woman who poisoned him when he was young (didn't really affect him). Then father and son argue once again, screaming back and forth and exchanging blows until MC decides he'll no longer treat him as his father.

The whole event just felt like the author was venting pent up feelings about his dad in his novel. It was weird, there had to be a better way to change the pacing of the story besides making father and son enemies so abruptly.

Anyway, this whole section was enough to make me drop this novel and it made me hate it enough to write this review. <<less

C41: Great story up to this point. Not a massive plotline spanning the continent yet, but a calm and fun progression of cultivation from infancy with a fun system. He isn't handed everything. He actually needs to work for it which is appreciated. The cultivators of the world also aren't thrown aside like other system novels. They still have their experience, their humanity and skills to pass on. Great novel!

C100: This novel has only become better. I can count on one hand the amount of chinese xianxia novels I've read... more>> that actually show emotions of side characters, this one builds an entire world! Best system novel I've EVER read hands down.

Spoiler

Usually in a system novel it's all about power, as long as you have power you get the girl, a good family, don't lose anything, everyone respects you etc... This novel takes it a bit further. Powerful people can still feel loss, they can still have their own circumstances, weirdly enough for the first time in a long while, this applies to the MC as well in this story. He's almighty, super OP, yet even he can get hit in other ways than with strength

Do I like this novel? Yes. Would I recommend it? Definitely no.

This novel is a "weak to strong" story with no plot besides the forced drama with his parents and that one friend. I'm not exaggerating, all he does is cultivate and fight enemies who come to him in one big chain of killing the young and having to deal with the old.

MC fights a group of demons who work for one strong demon who works for a stronger demon who is a part of a group of demons who... more>> are a part of a stronger group of demons who work for one guy who then comes with his friends who happen to have a master in the upper world who happens to be a part of a sect. I'd go for longer but that's as far as the raws go. <<less

This novel has good ideas but the author ruined it :

Firstly the cliché bug of the golden finger making the MC a waste for his family

Secondly the fixation of the MC on Go/chess when he could explore others art to easily farm art point.

And finaly the lazy and moronic personnality of the mc

Cultivation Begins from Infancy, quite an interesting novel albeit with a main character with ridiculously overpowered cheats. Nonetheless it was fun seeing him utilize his cheats and weather the storm during his vulnerable period.

The basic overview for the first hundred chapters is that the MC is deemed talentless, uses his cheat by doing non-combat hobbies in order to upgrade his combat skills, eventually shocks people with his talent when he reveals it. If you're into that sort of plot progression, I don't think this novel quite strictly follows other novels... more>> with this set up but it's still similar enough that you'd know whether or not you'll like the novel based off of that.

Pros:

Good side characters. I think they are quite distinct and easy to remember.

Mixed bag:

The system. Personally I don't like system novels since they invalidate the characters' and even the mc's efforts, but at least in this case they add a flavor to the mc's personality and identity.

Family drama. I think enough people has complained about it so I think it does qualify to be a con, but personally I did actually find it engaging. It just depends if it will resonate with you or not.

Inconsistent MC. Most of the times he's reliable and knows when to hide himself and not attract trouble, but like some people said he gets unreasonably emotional when it comes to his close family members. That's not a bad thing on its own, like I said I did find it engaging, but it would've been better if the author laid a foundation for that type of behavior instead of making him a rational person who suddenly becomes irrational. It sticks out a lot when he's completely irrational one second when dealing with his family, but becomes completely pragmatic with dealing with fiance, etc.

Cons:

Ambiguous power progression. The MC is a cheater so it's kind of hard to gage his progress since he'll basically never be challenged. It's a common symptom in this genre, it is what it is.

Some thoughts after chapter 120:

Spoiler

I think this might be where I drop the novel, the translator has also stopped releasing free chapters as of this review. Ngl I was almost tempted to spend for the patreon during the heir designation arc, and I definitely think it would've been worth it. Unfortunately I don't have that kind of money rn and now that it's transitioning to a new arc, things have settled down and I'm more or less fine with ending things here. I liked the dynamic between the MC and his fiance the most in this novel, personally I would've been a lot more decisive than the MC and cut ties but hey the MC is more pragmatic, which is why it's such a weird thing that he'd rather kill himself than reconcile with his family members. Pragmatic or emotional, either way works fine, but it just doesn't feel consistent that this is the same person even if you could brush it off as the MC being "multi-faceted". Personally I would've wanted just a few tweaks here and there and make it more obvious that he's clearly obsessed about his parental issues instead of the narration pretending like he's always fine and being rational about it, because it ends up coming off like the author doesn't think it's weird to be that extreme.

[collapse]

All in all a decent novel, I would maybe like to pick it back up again when it's completely translated. <<less
