I don't actually know how to describe my feelings towards this book. It is badly written? No. Is it interesting? There's something interesting going on but it can't catch my attention. Maybe it's the narrative? Or the execution that the author made? It just that the elements in the story is very good but somehow not very engaging.

The story is written as a daily life with a serious undertone. Them exchanging bodies would be a recipe for comedy but no, the other is serious while the other is too timid.... more>> It also kinda felt like the author dropped some planned subplots (like MC is good at gardening and cooking, and it kinda seems to be what her strength will be. Like engaging in agriculture but it didn't happen). I guess the author isn't the best at patching the plot? The plot and the subplots kinda mismatched.

Oh, but the author is very good at making characters. You could say they're all gray characters, or at least the author gave them sound motives and you could follow their line of thinking. Though because of this, you can't cheer uncontrollably towards the leads.

Also, I don't know of it's also because the author isn't strong at narrative or I'm an old spice at reading, but the hints they gave about the twist were pick up at the get go. So like, you just wait for the reveal, and you're not that interested with the reveal because it kinda makes the MC's IQ doubtful. <<less

My rating is 3.5.

This is a story that could've been better, but ultimately did not deliver.

It's basically a slice of life story, with some political intrigue in between. The basic premise is of a maid (who transmigrated from the future) who could swap bodies with the Emperor at night when the Emperor sleeps.

You'd think there'd be more fun shenanigans but the maid is too timid to do anything but eat and read books as per the summary. When the Emperor eventually finds out as well, there isn't much happening other... more>> than them being penpals. He doesn't help to improve much of her conditions, neither does she rely on him to do much.

Her struggles as a maid is documented, and she works for the Empress. She isn't Mary Sue, nor does she have a golden finger, and she does suffer as a maid. She's a very timid FL who does her best to be happy and carefree. Eventhough it doesn't end up like she wishes as she's thrown into a lot of pitfalls and traps. She does try to keep her spirits up and she's kinda very optimistic.

Things happen that's mostly about the ML's unwillingness to be played into the hands of the Empress Dowager who seeks power. He doesn't touch anyone in his harem and there's a story behind that which I find to be an interesting basis for him to dismiss his harem unlike some other novels where the Emperor finds "true love" and dismisses the harem. This Emperor has a plan, and he executes it. The ML is very firm in his decisions, plans ahead, and very smart. I rather like his character. However, due to his seriousness, it doesn't play into the story very well with a lack of comedy despite the fun premise of body-swapping.

Even when towards the end of the novel, spoiler ahead:

Spoiler

The Emperor eventually is able to swap to the FL's body and has to be a maid, it isn't funny at all, as he's unwilling to compromise and basically acts as himself even in her body and other people just thinks "she's" a rude, spoiled maid.

[collapse]

With the FL and ML's personalities, nothing much really happens in the novel in the beginning. It's all about them gradually falling in love. The ML has a closed off personality and it's nice to read about him opening up to the FL slowly. If you're into that, then you may like this novel.

However, the cons are the slow-pace, and the various plotholes and also possible planned subplots that never come into fruition like the review from Shimozuki Yue mentions. FL is supposedly good at gardening, but it doesn't act as a gold finger to help the ML in any way. Even towards the end when something major happens, FL doesn't really assist ML in the political battle
Spoiler

between him and the Song family and the rebellion by He Qing, his subordinate. FL just came with soldiers but it's so minor, and ML mostly solves the crisis along the story.

[collapse]

There are also characters that could've been more. Like the hidden 2nd ML.

Spoiler

I still don't quite understand the Empress' role in the story. So in the end, I think the Empress is supposed to be Song Changsheng, a man who pretends to be a woman. But why did the Song family send a man to wed the Emperor if so? It's mentioned that the Empress Dowager wants the Emperor to sire a son from the Song family line so that their lineage that be rulers. So why send a MAN to be the empress?? I get that this Song Changsheng was spoiled from birth due to his weak constitution and really feels bad for his sister who was overlooked cause his parents pampered him instead. But how does going to the palace to sleep with the Emperor solve that? Just cause the sister prefers to be a General instead? Then how was the Empress going to have a child? And then, after the Emperor dismisses the harem, why did the Empress who has reverted to his male identity decide to be the No 1 scholar and be the Emperor's subordinate??? Why did the Emperor NOT RECOGNIZE this person as his Empress whom he married for TEN YEARS. Even if they rarely met, could it be that the Emperor not be able to deduce that this man was his supposed wife all along? Could he not investigate that? And was he not upset with that knowledge??? All this was not mentioned at all. Oh and this Empress of his even drugged the ML to do the deed, which wasn't done in the end, but like, what was going to happen???

The Empress also had a crush on the FL, but nothing overly explicit was mentioned. He didn't even try to help the FL at all through her struggles despite liking her. I finally understand why JinXue, one of the Empress trusted aide, hated the FL. Cause she knew that this Song Changsheng liked the FL, and it could've ruined everything.

Still, what a strange plot to bring into the story. The ending of Song Changsheng was also hella weird. Rebel and then stop everything? Why, what??? Ugh. I hate the author who threw a random subplot and not build it properly.

[collapse]

Finally, after that super spoiler at the top, the other thing I disliked was the ending. How f**** abrupt???? Like, they do the deed because the ML got poisoned. And then they hold hands. AND THE END. Sorry for the spoiler but this ending just s**ked. Did the author run out of things to write about and then went for this ending? Ugh.

Would not recommend the story unless you want a slow-build cold ML falling for a cute maid vibe story. <<less
