For the sad*st readers or for the masochistic readers.

By the way, the author said this would have a happy ending. So of course, as a chump, I am reading for the hope at the end of the tunnel.

Your first turn off may be the MC himself (his 'personality') : ... more>>
Spoiler

(The MC is a character that compulsively apologizes and says he's okay often when he's not. Because of the system's strict requirements, he's forced into being a pushover. I don't enjoy saying characters are pushovers but that's a literal characteristic of this character, that he is thoroughly controlled by the system.)

[collapse]

And it is so, so frustrating. I thought I had a great resistance to this kind of thing, but I spent every chapter cursing at the characters and circumstances out loud. But honestly? This seems to be what the author intends to do, and damn does the author do a cycle of pain, angst and frustration well. The biggest highlight is absolutely the backstory and memory reveals. At the same time as frustration, I was crying tears at the reveals and damned doomed nature of this novel.

To get to the good parts of this novel (which are SO f*cking good) you have to endure, alongside the MC, all of the ways he has no control over his life, crappy controversies (they're well written...) and social media posts (they will piss you off every time) and how the members treat him and each other. The good parts are not happy, but they're such dramatic revelations that continue to wretch your heart. The core of the story is the tragic nature of the relationship between members. The foreshadowing is good and the events are well connected, and in fact, there are so many lines that get revealed to be devastating later (your Korean comments on the KakaoPage will tell you all about them...).

For those on the fence, I'll list a major spoiler. It's related to memories and the regression which are more major themes within this idol drama than any other.

Spoiler

The main character, Go Youngin suffers major memory issues from both the system and a specific accident. This is what divides the relationship between him and the other members, which he has an elaborate past with every one of them.

[collapse]

If you REALLY want to know what the sadness of this story I keep alluding to is about:

Spoiler

Go Youngin's relationships end up one-sided and awkward because of circumstances out of everyone's control and the bulk of the tragedy is centered on how the members feel like they lost someone they once loved. Because of regressions and memory issues, Go Youngin becomes someone entirely new from his old self.

[collapse]

I'm so sorry this review is tagged so heavily with spoilers. Part of the charm is being blindsided by the shocking reveals, but at the same time, I think there are many engaging elements that overshadow annoyance and frustration. So personally I eat this sh*t up, but I will keep the score at 4/5 out of a slight bit of objectivity.

tldr: Most interesting parts start from ch50-60 on. From there, you get the general gist of what the story will be like. Backstory reveals are the major interest points. Made me cry multiple times. In between those is well written segments of pain, so much so you want to curse the author for their sadism. But its also really f*cking frustrating repeatedly. Needs thick skin to read through. <<less

MC regress countless of times. There's part of his memories from the past he dont remember. Pretty sure its due to the system. When the warning excess the limit. He'll have penalty. I actually feel sorry for MC and towards the team members, everyone is connected to him. The way MC is always 'clueless' and 'Forget things' it makes it hard. He act dull and always stares in the void (system)

I haven't finish it yet. Im still in chapter 200/223

In my opinion, this is not an idol novel. So if you are here to see teamwork, industry drama, bromance, and want to fangirl/boy over a fictional K-Pop, the door is right there, please leave for your sanity's sake thank you very much. If you are still curious about what you're getting into though, feel free to read the first few chapters - you will very quickly grasp what you are getting into (and no, it does not get better in fact, you can say it gets worse) .

To try... more>> to be as accurate as possible about what this novel is, in my opinion, this definitely leans more towards the psychological genre rather than your usual idol storyline. Whereas other idol novels have you genuinely wanting the members be bffs literally and idols for life, this novel has you (or at least me) begging them to disband every other chapter. It really tests your patience and sanity as you trudge through 300+ chapters (and even more in the future) hoping that the happy ending the author has promised is worth it in the end (it better be) . So most certainly, you have to 1) be in the right mindset to read this and 2) be that niche target demographic that this caters to. Otherwise, you will most likely have a hard time enjoying this novel and then it won't really be worth the effort.

Overall, as of part 1, the writing is done pretty well and the author does a pretty good job at foreshadowing certain parts and dropping easter eggs which make sense later on. The "torture" of our protagonist, Go Youngin, also doesn't feel excessive nor done just for the sake of "edgy tragedy" - although still exasperating to read, the author keeps within the limits of the novel's settings and worldview and doesn't randomly hit him with a truck out of nowhere.

All-in-all, I hope this review has sufficiently warned people and cleared up any misunderstandings they may have going into this. As for other aspects (such as the storline and characters), I think the other reviews have done a pretty good job at covering that without spoiling too much, so no need from me. Happy reading! :D <<less

This novel is both maddening and remarkable.

If you appreciate traumatised MCs and novels heavy with angst, I reccommend it because I loved it (am I unhinged? Yes).

Unfortunately, Go Young-In, the MC, is an ill-fated guy that goes through a pain-drenched ordeal : plenty regressions topped with gut-wrenching restrictions, all that to become a perfect leader.

Spoiler

The system here isn't very 'system-like'. All it does is warn the MC whenever he makes a mistake and deviates from the perfect idol-leader track and give penalties. Warnings appear which leads him to put on a smile, act when it's necessary but it's funny how his thoughts contradict his behavior. Despite it being very restrictive, he ends up desperately relying on the system, to the point where he's like a lost child if it ever disappears, even if briefly. Not to mention, his past and even parents are sickening, he's the most unlucky guy I've ever seen.

[collapse]

But beside the MC's awful circumstances, his group's members aren't any better.

To be precise, they're all f*cked up. In entertainment novels, it's usual for problems to arise and for the MC to find a way to clear them up but here, the members are true walking disasters in themselves and it's kinda infuriating (but truly entertaining, I love them).

You'll either find them excessively ill-tempered or weird as f*ck, but they'll ultimately grow on you because the author's story-building skills are amazing. Therefore, the relationship between the MC and the characters is the novel's main driver. Misunderstandings, fights... however, through the members' backstory, you eventually understand the reason why they're all so unfriendly. These characters are the icing on the cake, very well-written, described and staged. The author was able to make me feel the fear, the despair, the resentment, the attachment expressed in each character's deeds and thoughts, and it's what makes them even more special.

Spoiler

Because the members' past is related to the MC, they in fact have a deep-burried affection towards him. Due to the repeated regressions, he developped memory loss and this issue was bound to spark discord in the group knowing they became idols uniquely because and for Young-In.

[collapse]

And, because unwelcome events keep happening back-to-back, you find yourself loathe the sh*t that pops up and yearn for happy lulls to occur. Hence, it makes the readers stay and keep on reading because they hope he'll have the happy ending he deserves.

In a nutshell, I like the novel but it's because I'm into heart-breaking stories. <<less
