The better written version of the WN.

If you're not familiar with the webnovel version, the gist of the story is Iris' life after being appointed representative duke to her father's fief. She's using her knowledge from her past life to push for various reforms in the fief--things unthinkable in the monarchy and aristocracy setting.

Selling points:

  • Strong af female MC who doesn't kill people. Well, not directly....
  • Reasonably not omniscient and omnipotent MC. Some would argue that she knows too much about some things, but I think those can be sort-of handwaved... I do know some rather random things too....
  • Excellent buildup to main conflict. The arcs are all overarching into the climax, and it gets really intense later.
  • You get chapters dedicated to the view of other characters, even, dare I say it, cannon fodders. It gives depth to a heck lot of side characters.
  • You have chronic Second ML Syndrome (just like me) ??? This will cure you. At least during reading this novel. Lol.
Not-selling points:

  • THE f*ckING s*upid SECOND PRINCE. *cough* I mentioned that some chapters are dedicated to cannon fodders and side characters. Well, 2nd prince must be neither cannon fodder nor side character... because he don't got any. Which is also weird as heck, because he was Iris' fiance. His character is the most flat, unexplored template of lovestruck idiot. He's so cannon fodder even his 2nd fiancee colluded with his mom instead of him.
  • First Prince too f*cking perfect. I mean he's basically MC but male, with strong martial arts so he can protect her... *cough cough* I'm not complaining though

Unlike the normal cliched, I'd avoid my dead flag scenario, this story started when Iris was already at the confrontation scene. And how she handles the situation afterwards.

The plot's really nice, and it has likeable characters.

You know all those wish-fulfillment isekai novels for guys where some mediocre nobody becomes OP in a new world and wows everyone with his impeccable rationality and logic while amassing a harem of beautiful women who all love him and men who all vow loyalty to him? And everyone who defies and betrays him dies?

This is the genderflipped version of that. The whole villainess thing? All window dressing so the writer can have Iris start off as a rich noble with servants and then start writing the story they actually... more>> wanted to write.

The only difference is Iris doesn't go around being a creep and buying up s*ave girls who for some contrived reason enjoy being a s*ave. Instead it's all fast-forwarded so she already has a team of orphans that she befriended as a child who are completely loyal and competent.

And the novel actually spends a long time criticizing the class system and the concept of nobility and focuses on empowering citizens. Iris' brother even straight up calls it a stagnating blight on society. Which is a very refreshing take from other isekai novels where they practically worship the class system and the Good Guys are the Good Nobles and the Bad Guys were actually Fake Nobles.

And the ending is pretty satisfying in that
Spoiler

instead of the traditional ending where Iris marries the prince and becomes the queen, the prince abdicates in favor of his sister, fakes his death, and marries Iris as a nobody commoner.

I really enjoyed this novel. I love the character developments and the story progression. I also like the realistic approach to the romantic relationship between the MC and ML. The story is different from the usual 'otome' stories because the plot starts right where the villainess' misdeeds are exposed and goes onto her journey of discovering herself and what she can do.

I fell in love with the manga and then the novel! Great main character and really detailed to read.

... more>> As mentioned in other reviews, the story basically begins where usually the villainess is dejected and leaves to govern her own land under her family's name. You follow her making these decisions and becoming an amazing leader. What I loved the most about the series is the the fact that the villainess is working through her emotions of everything that's happened which adds really interesting additional dialogue. She's also not perfect, you follow her through different emotional turmoils that kind of burst through at times because she doesn't have time to deal with them.

I personally found her relatable in that you have to keep pushing through hardships and it was lovely to see her really take charge of her own destiny regardless. <<less

    • Writing: When the story starts here, Iris' memories of the game itself is pretty much useless other than motivating a swift change in priorities. Rather, it's her memories of modern day bureaucracy and government that aide her in moving forward. There's as much politics in this one as there is romance but the tension and forward momentum is wonderfully maintained for both. I never found myself flagging in the middle of a volume but instead was constantly delighted and looking forward to the next payoff. While I wouldn't say anything here is particularly novel, it's all well set-up and played out in a rewarding manner. The HEA is a liiiitle teensy bit rushed for me, but if my greatest complaint is wanting more? That's pretty good.
    • Characters: There are a fair amount of cliches among the characters (ie. Overly skilled and hardworking characters) but they're all normal conceits of the isekai and romance genres. Iris herself is a hyper-competent bureaucrat and businesswoman, though this is somewhat mitigated by her actively acknowledging the boundaries of even her modern knowledge and working to surround herself with trustworthy, competent people. Most importantly for me, the characters are all internally consistent, and just really fun. There's pretty satisfying development for a few of the main characters with internal conflicts later on, which are nicely handled without slowing the plot. The secondary characters also get enough depth that they're interesting without ceding too many pages to them.
    • Romance: While I already talked about the romance a bit above, the main romance is surprisingly and delightfully emotionally mature. While the feelings develop quickly, it feels natural, and we're left with the conflict being between two people who are very dedicated to their causes in a way which makes it difficult to realize a future together. There's a twist at the end that's very cliched but it's also very satisfying with where everyone ends up. And yes there's a happily ever after <3
Overall, some may take issue with its lack of novel concepts and some of its more trope-y aspects. However, if you're looking for a fun read, this is one of the better written shojo light novels out there, with a solid plot and entertaining characters.

I've read vol 1 on the LN (which is all I see up at the moment). This is basically: "City/domain/business management game, isekai otome game edition". Legitimately. Everything and every character in this basically is introduced for no other reason than to show us how the author would run a things. Nothing else has meaning.

Oh she needs trustworthy starting allies? Well that's fine. She has an army of orphans that she happened to pick up off the streets. Just coincidentally you know. You just never heard about it in the... more>> original game, okay? It just wasn't fleshed out, okay? Her mother is also the flower of high society and every family connection ends up being useful. Great.

Money? Nah that's in the bag, she reincarnated as a villainess and they're always rich.

Talent? It's okay, the MC was a past tax accountant who apparently was way overly intelligent for her role and knew a little too much about the government's internal workings. Oh wait maybe that's why she was killed! It wasn't an accident after all?! Also by the way like every other female protagonist in an isekai these days, she dabbled in creating homemade lotions and beauty products.

Also like every other isekai world they haven't exploited some basic resources nor created any beauty products, sweets, soaps, etc. Great.

It's just trope after trope as far as the actual story is concerned. In some ways it's unique because if you like games like the Civilization series, well... Don't worry! That's basically all of the content of this entire book. The interpersonal relationships are just tacked on for funsies. Like her first meeting with the brightest head merchants in the entire domain basically involved her wowing them and getting all of her policies to go through without any real debate from them. It just progresses so smoothly that it's pointless.

I happen to like those management games to an extent so actually I somewhat like this and will keep reading, but when objectively reviewing it, it's kind of... bad... <<less

So cliche! (¬_¬)

I really don't know what came over me that I decided to torment myself knowing how utterly foolish and cliche this story is.

Here we are again, Irish the indestructable MC. Irish who can do anything, be the smartest, kindest, cleverest and purest person to ever exist in the entire universe proving herself again just how important she is with all her wits and glory. (Sigh)

Heads and tales above most things in it's genre. It's a well excuted shojo but with more of a main plot then you normally see. She has goals indepentant of the guy which is what you really want as a modern reader in the genre. At least for me I'd love to see more American books and international books that do this. At the same time the guy has an interesting goal set as well. The romance has some nice slow stop moments that are enjoyable.

But they spend a lot of time in the "supporting" her dreams stuff which is fine. But I think one of the big problems is the series at least up until the point I've read book 4v does a poor job humanizing the changes to the world she brings. And instead focus on how tired it's making her and how much she passes out which is kind of boring to read as a reader. I think when I orginally started reading this it was book3 I stop at before I saw the bookworm light novel. Which excutes better to humanize the changes she brings and makes you care about the world itself through that humanization. This author doesn't and it shows and takes away from the pace but replaces it with dumb fainting spells without stakes.

In a weird way she stops developing herself. Like ok no magic in the world but she could have learn some fighting. Fighting so she could be better protected. That's what I would respect. Being able to run away and work with your guards is important tool. You hit a point in the series and it becomes oh no don't be too tired on repeat from all the characters and faintng spells. Just gets SUPER boring. Then she has all these products and this great big world and instead of exploring it. We instead go from person to person in this repeat duke daughter sama rotine that shows how much everyone loves her which again is boring for me as a reader. No matter how many POV you give that crap is always gonna be boring at least for me. But As it's pretty common in light novels maybe the reader base loves it I have no idea. I'd rather see the world figure it out. See the crops being grown check out the biz and store and shops and things. I think that only happen once in the book but no protect shelves and stuff. Sigh.

Her mom is REALLY interesting and I think book 6 or something we get her whole moms backstory but again. I'm not really trusting of the author at this point. Don't get me wrong this story is WAY beyond many things I've read marketed with a female lead. Written I think by a woman in this space. But the characters don't really get humanizing development besides oh no can't let down princess sama. It's reductive even when they do the POV switching for spice.

[collapse]

overall strong 4. I'm not sure I'm ever going to read anything from this author again because the things I do not like about her writing get worst each book. I'm not sure if it's a japense editor thing or it's just the way she writes. But I enjoy a in the world instead of talking about the world book. If that makes any sense. <<less

I just finished reading it and I hope this review helps you decide whether to give the book a chance or not :P
-
Story ★★★☆ - I really liked the story, simple World-Building, but pleasant to read, the characters are very "believable", I lowered the rating because of the V4 & V5 but then came the V6, V7 and V8...
About the V4 & V5
... more>>
Spoiler

- The romance of the main couple could have been much better developed, and consequently of other couples, my complaint about the characters also falls here, precisely because of the point commented on the "characters" part.

[collapse]
About V6, V7 & V8
Spoiler

- Author decided to make a spin-off telling the past of Merellis, which is nice, but at the same time unnecessary, and very BORING, the Mother of FMC is the perfect woman, strong, kind, the only "obstacle" is her not being able to do X or Y, because she is a woman, and the work has to focus on that point at all times, the other detail is the training, the author has to focus on it at all times, and it gets incredibly boring.

[collapse]
-
Character ★★☆ - As I said, the characters are very "believable", with the exception of the group that FMC surrounded itself "pre-Isekai", the problem is in the lack of "difficulty" that these people have, the plot-armor gives FMC are them, the staff is a "do it all", they don't have difficulties with anything, and all that the FMC asks, they can do, is practically play in "Easy Mode", not that it doesn't have its difficulties, but they dilute it TOO MUCH they.
In relation to other characters, as I said, they are very "believable", I liked their development, and I think it's pretty cool, now... The decision that some took from V4 & V5, is questionable.

My problem is the main couple, I'll talk about FMC first... Read at your own risk!
Spoiler

- Our FMC, at a certain point in history, says that if her brother assumes the Duchy, she would not see any problem in having a union with Kadhir, since it would be a political union and beneficial for his Kingdom, until then you understand.. But the character's pride is too giant, to simply say "I love you", because, look, the brother could assume the Duchy along with Letícia, Íris and Alfred assumed the Kingdom, and could implement all kinds of fiscal and welfare for the population, but the author chose to marry in another Kingdom, at least it is a strange decision even on the part of the character, and following this bizarre decision, she at various times says that she cares about the people of the Duchy and blah blah blah, but would she quietly marry THE PRINCE OF ANOTHER KINGDOM instead of marrying THE f*ckING PRINCE OF HER KINGDOM? It's very contradictory.
- About Alfred, I found it more bizarre, the guy fought since he was a child to protect himself and his sister, polishing himself in several areas, both knowledge and combat, to get to the end, Letícia simply convince him, that the his place is in Armelia and that she would become Queen, just because she saw herself as a burden and wanted to help her brother... Like, in my humble opinion, this goes completely against the character's proposal, if it was something that was gradually assembled, I would understand, but his decision was very abrupt, both his and his sister's. Couple this with the character's complete inability to declare himself to Iris, was I WAT? Why you do not speak? Where's that claw to fight against everything and everyone? But the character comes and says "ah, I don't want to take away her freedom, she's beautiful like that, free and blah blah blah", ahhhhhh that's very bullshit, even more so as LN herself put him as a very calculating Prince and such.

[collapse]

-
Art ★★★★★ - They are beautiful, if I have to complain about the Art, it would be the lack of more detailed colored art.
-
Enjoyment ★★☆ - I really thought the idea was cool, I would have liked the Romance of some characters to have been more detailed, as for the City-Building part, as I said, they were "mid" and the romance followed the same path, the political part was very OK too nothing especially, as I said, simple world-building, but pleasant to read. If I have to point something out... Let's go with spoilers...
Spoiler

- The subtle feminism, which comes with the "clothes" of gender equality, is even valid, the author wants to address these points, the problem is when she doesn't put the reason "things are the way they are", there's no point in staying saying that "AH WOMEN CANNOT ENTER THE ARMY", there is a reason for that, and at no point is it asking "why?", it is simply played, and it gets extremely annoying.

[collapse]
-
General ★★☆ & 5/10 - I give this note, as it is a more "comfy" story, it has its heavy moments, but as I said, I found the ending to be quite abrupt (V5), and both the Romance and City-Building in LN could have been better developed, also, I found the last 3 volumes very BORING, if I had finished at V5, I would have given it a 7/10, but the other volumes were painful to read, of course this varies from reader to reader ¯_ (ツ) _/ ¯.

A heavy business management (well, almost all abt bank tax and financial stuff is totally a mumbo jumbo for me T T)

More to how a salary woman living her reborn life as a duke daughter and implement her knowledge to do business and eventually the modern salary woman is no where, she's already merging as a human from an isekai.

A good read imo
