After reading this novel, I'd like to warn people that this isn't a really lighthearted or sweet cheesy novel. There were many times where I wished that I can just give the MC a hug. If you've seen the drama the Empress of China, or Goodbye my Princess and can stand the plots and characters in those dramas, then you should be able to read this novel without much trouble. I also skipped some chapters too because I just can't stand it!!! Like, my heart goes cold whenever I get... more>> to some specific parts in the chapters. [Spoiler about the ending] So, about the ending, I actually didn't hate it surprisingly because of all the things that the MC was forced to go through. I'd admit that I still cried like a baby for the ending though. Basically, the MC died ?[/spoiler]

a warning though;

there are douchebags. I swear there were soooooo many times I wanted to smack some characters in here, but hey, it's Ancient China, power rules, so there's a reason why they act that way too. <<less

The chapters are rather short but the plot so far is interesting. One maid, one Prince, one unfortunate incident... I am very much so looking forward to where this will go. So for now, four stars because it had managed to rouse my interest.

EDIT: Ahh, my interest has waned so that 4 stars is dropping to 3.

All I can think is most of the main characters are so pitiful. Only Yuanfeng and Muhua were not. At least they're happy with each other.

I just started reading this one because I wanted to read a tear-jerker novel. Been reading fluffy romance and needed a break. It worked. For me, this one is really an awesome novel. Jam-packed. The kind of thing I was looking for. There's face slapping in the harem, romance, stategy on war, etc.

Qingying (the mc) had three husbands on the duration of her life.

emperor (Pei Yuanhao)

He may not be a good person but you can't say he's not a good emperor. - This was what Qingying said. Just like when a person is a good person but he might not be a good leader. Qingying loved this guy first. Supported him and paved the way for him. He's ruthless on everyone and of course, Qingying too especially on the start of the novel. He changed heart along the way. He wanted to treat her right. Unfortunately, it's too late. She already loved Qinghan to death around that time.

The emperor admitted that the girl in his heart is Yan Qingying. But he owe his life to Nangong Lizhu

Lu Qinghan

"Others die for love while others live for love." - Qinghan was the former. This guy's flaw was he keeps choosing the common people first then Qingying. She loved this guy to death until the end. All she wanted was this guy. Unfortunately, Qinghan didn't have a selfish love regarding Qingying. His main priority was the common people, as I said above.

Perfect quote for him:

"A person who is affectionate to the common people and to too many people is destined to be ruthless to one person." Yep. That one person was Qingying.

Also, "Others die for love while others live for love." - this one was what he said to Qingying before setting fire on Jixian Hall and letting her escape the palace. After that, he pretended to have an amnesia to save his life and to achieve his goal. He's ruthless to Qingying by pretending to not know her and decided to forget all about her. He's also willing to marry another girl just to achieve his goal for the common people.

Tbh, I don't really like this guy much for MC. But all of the most affectionate and happiest moments of Qingying was with him. So I couldn't help but cheer them.

When he decided to fight for their love at the end, he knew he's gonna die soon. It's just so sad that MC kept begging him not to leave her again but yea, pretty sure he won't do that when he knew he's not gonna die soon.

He had a selfless love till the end. He's okay with not being with MC as long she's happy with anyone. He gave her his business. Can take a crime just to protect her.

Pei Yuanxiu (the one who usurped the throne from Pei Yuanhao)

I didn't have quotes on him. No memorable one. I just thought he's pitiful. MC was unsure whether she loved this man or not. Yuanxiu asked her a lot of times. He saved Qingying's daughter. He gave her home amd Qingying too. He won't let her be wronged. He'd rather get hurt than MC get hurt.. so many times. All he wanted was Qingying to love him. They had 4 years of marriage iirc. He's the opposite of Qinghan, Yuanxiu was Qingying first then the common people. Unfortunately, Qingying supports Yuanhao since she thinks he's a much better emperor than Huanxiu. He can threaten, sacrifice or kill anyone as long as he achieves his goal even the common people. Anyone except Qingying. As long as Qingying was happy he can pretty much do anything that makes her happy. But he can kill her friends of they can threaten his goal

When Yuanhao and Yuanxiu was at war, even if Yuanxiu knew that Qingying's the spy and kept on blocking his way, he's still gentle to her, protects her and loved her still. Qingying was his downfall too. RIP. You loved the wrong woman Yuanxiu. Should've loved Nangong Lizhu or Han Zitong. They're supportive gals just for him. Han Zitong especially, until the end.

Oh, it's Yuanxiu who poisoined Qinghan. So Qingying hated him but still let him escaped alive when Yuanhao took back the throne. Since she owed him a lot.

In terms of romance, I'm unsure who I wanted for her to ended up with. But I hoped it was with

For me, the flaw of Qingying was

she's not a confused person and cannot compromise. Throughout the whole novel, she cannot be become happy because of it. Ironically, she taught Qinghan before that "The more things you know, the less happier you are" Yep that's true especially to her. Since she's stubborn and cannot compromise, the tragic ending was the best ending for her. She got her freedom she wanted since she was a palace maid. Hope there were chapters on what happened after that tho...

I finished the MTL of this novel last year. It was an amazing, beautiful and tragic story. I wish I knew Chinese so I could give it a proper translation. It would also make an epic tv series or movie. Some of the descriptions of the scenes were amazing even in MTL.

I’ve seen a couple attempts at creating mangas out of this story. The most recent does not even come close to given it the proper artist justice it deserves. I have no idea why it is rated so low.... more>> Except for one of the archs, I really thought this was a great story. <<less
