Empires rise and fall on the Yulan Continent. Saints, immortal beings of unimaginable power, battle using spells and swords, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Magical beasts rule the mountains, where the brave – or the foolish – go to test their strength. Even the mighty can fall, feasted on by those stronger. The strong live like royalty; the weak strive to survive another day.

This is the world which Linley is born into. Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Tasked with reclaiming the lost glory of his clan, Linley will go through countless trials and tribulations, making powerful friends but also deadly enemies.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch!

A great mainstream Xianxia novel.

MC very moral. No harem. No mindless killing.
Starts as a weak boy and become super ultra powerful in alignment with the story's current power level.
World very wide and various.
It's a Xianxia but with western naming, so it might be a good read for those new to chinese novel.

It starts really slow though... I would recommend reading this to a few volume first to get the feeling of its potential before reading a fast paced Xianxia like Against The God or Martial God Asura.

With the upcoming conclusion of the CD saga, I've decided to do a review in the hopes of presenting a convincing case of why you should read this LN. (Also maybe giving back a little to everyone involved in this effort, to make up for my leeching ways)

In the coming weeks, so ends the story of a man, Linley, and his rat brother who never seems to grow up (bebe/acts like a baby), through their journey from small-town hicks to the most powerful person in the universe. Through their... more>> trials and tribulations, ranging from petty and meaningless fights through to admirable and touching quests, I've come to feel a fondness for Linley's hardworking and dependable character whose main goal in life was to protect his family and friends. There is something for everyone in here, a love story and inevitable love triangle, GoT-like killing off of supporting characters (but not quite), level-ups galore, and a never-ending stream of scumbag antagonists to root for Linley to stomp on. While the plot armour was thick in places, and writing sometimes was repetitive (how many times do you want to laugh and cry at the same time?), I felt that the author (and translator) did a good job balancing exposition and action, sucking me into the story wholeheartedly, and kept me spamming refresh on my reading list while waiting for the next chapter to be released. In conclusion, while CD does not have the literary polish of Er Gen/Deathblade's I Shall Seal The Heavens nor the gritty play-by-play action of Tang Jia San Shao/Bagelson's Duolou Dalu, the characters, their motivations and subsequent actions are much more well rounded and believable than say Xian Ni/Against The Gods or Martial God Asura, and the world-building and storytelling is top notch. You won't regret reading this one. Special shout-out to: Ren Wo Xing for his time and effort on seeing this epic through to its conclusion as well as keeping us frequently updated on his progress, all the generous donors who supported the pace of releases, and IET for writing this excellent Light Novel. <<less

One of my favorite novels, the story is generally about gaining strength and defeating enemies who wronged him somehow. The CD universe is quite brutal, especially in the higher planes of existence where strength is king.
The mechanics of the type of power in this story is interesting and makes sense, but the author does not elaborate on many types of the power, which is unsatisfying to me.

I read some spoilers that the ending is rushed and leaves much to be desired, but the journey through Linley's path to the... more>> highest peak of power has been good. <<less

Simply the best LN out there and I've read quite a bit of them.
Excellent MC, plot development and translation.
And on top of that we have a huge amount of chapters.
And thank God, for once we have a good story without a harem.
Harem stories are so common, it became ridiculous (those having this sort of fantasy should turn to p*rn imo).

I lasted 11 or so volumes of continuous reading, this was my 1st Xiania and its what got me interested in them. By far this has to be the best world building and character development I’ve seen since I started watching One piece. I’ve now gone through 5 to 10 other Xiania and this has to be the most creative and worthwhile to read.

The reason I stopped reading was the arthur started to take way to many unfair & blatantly unnecessary actions the most unnecessary of them all involved a... more>> bridge. No spoiler but thats where I went, “Nope, no more”

actually I wanted to give this a 4 but the stars and my mouse had different opinions apparently <<less

A classic xianxia with a ridiculously strong protagonist who always manages to win against people a level higher than he is. The story is fun, but if it didn't have such regular chapters I'd probably have dropped it. Nobody really has much personality, and what they do have is static. The main character doesn't have any weaknesses, character flaws or even quirks. This means the story gets kind of repetitive after a few hundred chapters. That said, if you just want a fun, action oriented adventure, or if you... more>> haven't read a dozen versions of the same basic xianxia story and want to try one, this would be an excellent story to read. <<less

This is, without a doubt, ONE of the VERY BEST, if not THE BEST.

The writing is really good. Whether one has excellent translator matters, but not as much as how the author actually wrote the novel. The base writing clearly matters the most, and fortunately, I Eat Tomatoes is a really good one. Adding a really good translator to that equation, then we truly are fortunate. We should be lucky that the novel has both.

When compared with the other popular ones out there, which I also like (I should say),... more>> it is in another level. Few is actually comparable to it; I only know one myself. I assume there's another one or two out there waiting to be discovered by me.

Let me boldly say, that it deserves the TOP POSITION in the rankings here. It's a bit frustrating to see that it loses in the number of people who have it in their reading lists. I am almost completely sure that, compared to the other novels, it is actually not inferior when it comes to number of readers.

(However in my heart, there are two novels who holds the top spot. Seeing Coiling Dragon is much closer to its deserved position than the other one only made me say that this alone deserve the top position.) <<less

Pan Long or Coiling Dragon has the very long story. Most reader likes it, thus 4-5 stars. Some hates it and give 1-2 stars despite reading less than 10% of the whole story.

It is a typical CHINESE xianxia, written for CHINESE people who love to read million words novel. Absolutely not for western people who use to read 10 or 100 thousands. Chinese people have their culture, norm, like, taste of their own literature, Westerner too.

As the translator loves this kind of novel so much. So he kindly dedicates his... more>> private time, effort, resource, to translate it for the Westerner and those-who-cant-read-chinese could enjoy it too, for free !

But with such wide gap, some short-sight readers do as I mention above. Read a few line, then drop and give 1-2 stars.

I give 5 not only because of the writer & translator. This story is success. It leads other thousand translators to start translate the Chinese novelof every genre.

It's very good if you drop all the biases and read this novel as the first, 2-3 chapters a day, like what most reader had did seven years ago, when there was no xianxia translated

After the long intro, now the review.
Spoiler

Story of MC who was born ordianary, met turning point and the Grand Pa, evoled himself through wide moats and rough currents until success, being the top notch of all time.

Very typical, of course.

My favorite even after so many years. With the best ending ever totally unexpected and fulfilling. I didn’t expect much when I started but as I got into it (after ch 100) it was better and better (reading is my hobby and I read everything except harem, and this one is completely opposite of my favorites genre). The story has everything ... more>>
Spoiler

ML has a loving family (dad and a younger brother), hard working (through his whole life) everything he got is from his hard work. He got some lack too but he is ML after all, it’s his journal, his growing till the end of the world. Has loyal friends, He lost his first love (I am glad she did have some feelings for his power and money, but when he lost it at some point she finds a “seemingly better family to merry” regrets and he still saves her later like all other humans no feelings anymore), I am glad he got a better perfect wife loyal till death (had children later kingdom the whole mainland and in the end all the worlds-everything) - at the end he can have everything just everything but it lost the meaning. At the end what is the meaning of the word and the life itself?

This is my all-time favorite Xianxia that I've read, including the Manhua and the subvariants of Xianxia.

This novel is not very long, but it is very good. There isn't much wasted time and repeated storylines due to the small number of chapters, in comparison to other novels of this genre.

The setting at the beginning is actually pretty unique but has a lot of likenesses to usual Xianxia tropes. The novel continuously delivers emotional payoffs, great climaxes, unique strengths, and great characters.

The only negative is that the ending is slightly rushed,... more>> assumedly due to there being a sequel to this novel that the author wrote directly after this (Stellar Transformations). Even with that negative, I'd still say this is one of my favorite novels.

Have fun with the read! <<less

MC is logical and the arcs are good. Might sound a bit repetitive if you have read some novels already, but I think it's one of the best compared to similar plot novels. Highly recommended.

Good character development. Good plot overall. Fine action and dialogue. The main drawback will be its ending compare on its earlier parts it just bland and predictable in some way. But still a good read.

One of the novels that kickstarted the Chinese novel culture worldwide.

Extremely well translated (Ren...).

The author, I Eat Tomatos, is really famous and has had many hits (I personally prefer Stellar Transformation than CD), but this novel is the best one for someone that is starting out on CN novels, even the names in this novel are western which makes it easier to recall them for someone not acclimatized..

Some really epic moments in the novel (but this is a CN novel, so do expect repetition).

I'm glad this is the first Xianxia/Xuanhuan WN I'm reading, because in hindsight, this is a rather easy one to get into; as it shares traits of a Chinese novel, with Japanese characteristics. Clan revitalization & Cultivation via swords & sorcery that an average LN reader can understand, rather than diving head first into Daoist themes. Though a bit long & uneventful at times, I still enjoyed the Magic Academy Arc, followed by an unrelenting quest for vengeance and then godly battles.

The main problem is that the writer focused far... more>> too much in describing the intricacies & the mechanics of the world (s), rather than making the Realm of the Gods as interesting as the Mortal Realm. Plus most of the characters are rather dim-witted. But still this is one of the few Chinese WNs that I can see myself re-reading in the future. <<less

One of the first Chinese novels that I read and it served as a good introduction since it had Western names and magic system. Like many of I eat tomatoes work the childhood part is a good foundation but it goes downhill later in the story.

The story quality wasn't great but at the time I was reading this I had nothing else to do. In the end I think this is a pretty average as I broaden my view of Chinese novels over the years.

As the first cultivation light novel I read CD will always have a very special place in my heart, and will always remain as one of my favourite novels of all time; I highly recommend it to new readers, although some of the more experienced readers might not enjoy it as much due to some small errors in the story.
