Clearly, I’m the Second-in-Command, though?

As a man, I once aspired to become the ultimate final boss, a figure every man dreams of at least once in his life.

However, when I realized that I had been reincarnated into a world where a mistaken protagonist existed, I knew this world was no longer my playground alone.

“If you can’t beat them, join them.”

So, I set my sights on becoming the ultimate second-in-command—standing beside the protagonist, arms crossed, exuding absolute presence.

The MC is reincarnated into the world of a game he played, which turned out to be the same universe as a novel he read.

So like a typical reincarnator he grabs a bunch of event power-ups and pursues an optimal strategy to gain more power. That part is mentioned in barely more detail than this sentence because in this case it's not the plot, but the premise.

The goal of it all? Saving the world? Becoming a hero with a harem? No, the ultimate RP as a "final boss", and the... more>> MC is willing to put in centuries of preparation for the sole purpose of this hobby.

Because the novel protagonist has luck that reaches the point of needing reality, the MC instead chooses to become the final boss under him as his enforcer and second in command instead of being the final boss against him.

In his pursuits of RP, he helps and interacts with various people both in the main plot and his backstory, which unfolds in various entertaining stories.

Overall it's not exactly deep and it's also not the peak of comedy, but it's somewhat fun overall. I do agree to some extent with the other reviews that the first chapters are a bit weaker, but after a while the story hits its stride, and it's worth reading through that if the rest of my summary sounds like something you'd enjoy. <<less

Don't sleep on this one.

To briefly explain the premise, its a two-person MC type of novel: we have the original MC and Duke. The original MC is a typical reclusive misunderstanding strategist, while Duke a classic OP entity.

The charm lies with Duke. Honestly, you can treat the original MC as a supporting character at this point. While Duke mostly adhered to his role and inevitably continued supporting the original MC, he always remained in the spotlight. Duke is obsessed with being the "final boss" and that's his whole gimmick. The... more>> same mindset in almost any other novel and a certain pirate king anime, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

While I do get what the other reviewer is saying in that the start was a little messy, the first 30 chapters leaned more towards the prologue or setting the scene. Time is relative in this novel, with almost every character living beyond 100 years. Without spoiling anything, the recent chapters and arc have been extremely enjoyable. <<less

The start is a mess because the MC's nonsensical goals, life and plans are hard to understand and follow (the author is not good at explaining things... and, sometimes, skip the explanation completely). I found the first 10 or so chapters not really funny and a bit of a drag... But once you accept the setting and he gets to the actual starting point (after he properly enters the protagonist's party) it gets better.

I still have a really hard time understanding the MC's motivations, though. The protagonist of this world... more>> is really underwhelming; always frightened and spoon-fed, he is not really likeable (he's a coward who succeeds through cheats and luck and whose life goal is to be a harem king...), so I don't see how the MC ends up believing he should become his second-in-command... Also if his ultimate chuunibyou goal (the MC is 200 years old, though... but in this story nobody acts their age) is becoming the final boss, why not confront the protagonist after he becomes emperor?

Actually, I'm not clear if he wants to be the dark part of the protagonist's empire as his right-hand man, or if he wants to raise the protagonist and then become the final boss confronting him. Anyway, it seems that dying/losing cooly as the final boss is something he pursues...

Don't expect anything more profound from this story. The MC is a total lunatic, and, at the end of the day, his only goal is to get a front seat in the original story while looking cool (something he can accomplish very easily considering his powers (he probably didn't even have to do the roudabout things he did in the first chapters to accomplish that)). It's like he's playing a game, farming for decades just to get this one special event and place his lines, and not living his life at all. He has lived for more than 200 years in this world and still has no attachment to this world and its people (unless they are characters from the novel). I can't even say he cares about himself... it feels that he cares about his 'concept' more. And, well, while you might get emotionally invested in some characters' story sometimes, there is this guy here who's just playing around without a care in the world (even when his role playing carelessly destroyed someone's life, he's just going on and on about his current character and role play...)... so, yeah, sometimes I just can't help but hate him.

But, well, when you get past all that, it becomes pretty entertaining... <<less
