I’ll be the first to comment.

First of all, Big props to the translator. This was a really good translation, very well done and I’m super grateful for them taking the time out of their day to do it.

Secondly, this novel was so well done as a whole. I found it really refreshing. This was the first cultivation type novel where it had all the aspects of cultivation, but left out the supernatural side of it. No immortality, no random demonic creatures or mysterious dimensions.

It was plainly a martial arts novel... more>> that circled around learning martial arts and using the internal energy to make their moves flow better and more deadly. It was an interesting take for sure.

Even more interesting, was the Mc’s background and the entanglement with his father, the sects and the swords that unfolded in the end.

I truly enjoyed reading this and would highly recommend it. It was even pretty fluffy which made me happy since I have been craving more fluffiness over angst.

4.5/5 on the high end for sure <<less

This is one of those stories with genuine quality and effort put into it. It has a tight plot with good pacing, a believably gradual romance that's achingly sweet, distinct side characters, exciting plot developments, and two interesting leads with incredible depth who adore and are devoted to each other even while they bicker freely. Any drama between the leads is quickly wrapped up through open communication and is neither of their fault. Watching their characters develop from young to mature as they grow closer and develop friendships is pretty... more>> satisfying.

The story starts with the fifteen-year-old young master MC living a pampered life and showing his cleverness and talent in martial arts, despite his inability to practice it himself. One day while he's out, word reaches him that his family has been executed for treason and they're coming for him next. What follows is an exhausting escape with his guards that causes him to grow up real fast and leads to him joining a sect. Later, he ends up getting embroiled in various jianghu incidents that he solves, many times along with the ML, and he earns a reputation.

This story is wuxia instead of the usual xianxia so it focuses on martial arts and fighting moves rather than the fantastical aspects of cultivation. There's also a big dose of imperial politics thrown in.

Though the MC can't use internal energy for a big part of the story, he makes up for it with his incredible skill. He is also a dependable leader and a capable strategist, so it's honestly a delight to read how he overcomes each difficult situation he's placed in. While he can be kind, courteous, and even gentle, he is also pretty pragmatic and keeps himself distant from others due to his painful past.

Our little ML has already reserved a soft spot in the MC's heart for himself before the MC closes himself off, and we see them being each other's main pillar of support and affection throughout the story. It's adorable how the MC dotes on the ML and how intensely devoted the ML is to him in return.

Their relationship starts off somewhere between friends and a father-son dynamic before growing into equal partnership and a deep love. I'm really glad that the MC clearly shows he was never attracted to the ML when he was a minor, since that's an issue with a lot of other BL with an age gap.

Like the main leads, the side characters are suitably fleshed out too. I love that not everyone is black and white, even the MC. I wish we got to know more about the lesbian couple who started a sect or MC's protective aunts who verbally eviscerated his uncles when they wanted to kick him out. XD

All in all, the plot was very interesting as it unraveled, the romance was both heartwarming and fun, the character development was significant and realistic, and it was a very satisfying read overall~ Definitely recommended! :D <<less

Slow burn that doesn't feel like it and lots of emotional up and downs. Somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. The story is chronological and you follow the protagonists while growing up. (2 large time jumps)

STORY

MC is a young prince, very intelligent only lacking in martial arts. He knows the moves but is not able to use inner power. So this young man is known to be a waste but also frighteningly insightful. MC was born in a temple while traveling and his mother visits there once a... more>> year to gift money and pray. This one year she fell sick and forced her son to go in her stead. So MC traveled there with some trusted guards, paid his respects and met an even younger boy... stealing dates on a tree. Realizing this kid has outstanding potential but is fleeing from someone powerful, MC promises to help him and keep him safe, his name alone would be a mighty deterrent to most. Not knowing that his name just went on the hunted list.

Fleeing together, getting separated, sacrificing himself and meeting years later only to be separated again. Falling in twisted affairs from the previous generation, Fate throws them a lot of curveballs. Both grow on their own, go different ways but will stand together and seek for the same goal. Spend the rest of their life together...

The story is seen through MC and you follow him on his journey to flee, find a safe harbor, leave that place, get abducted, get a chance on martial arts and become a hero entangled in an old war between the ruling emperors and the jianghu.

In my opinion the writing is pretty solid. The story is well structured and thought out. There are no really loose ends but some questions stay unanswered on purpose. The story held me in is grip and at some points made me cry until my pillow was soaked through (well no I used tissues but you get the gist) .

About that slow burn... well they will only confess around chapter 94 but there is basically sweet interaction since day one. So I refuse to call it fluff but it somehow is.

I took one star away cause it annoyed me that there was a lack of communication between them that could have been avoided. <<less

3.5 rounded up because of intentions. The author had grand intentions, even if they were not perfectly executed, were plentiful. All in all read this for romance only - especially if you like cuddles lol. If you read it for any other reason (adventure, jianghu, politics etc), it will leave you with some to be desired.

The theme of the novel is karma.

Pro:

    • I don't think this has internalized misogyny bc of how not every woman is a villain. Exhibit:
      Spoiler

aunts having a moral compass and maintaining it. The one who ultimately saves the ML is a women bc she keeps her word and feels guilty. Oh yeah lesbians get a holler - they exist

      [collapse]
    • The MC is the gong which although I don't think it's good to divide ppl into gong/shou. Authors usually do it anyways so I'm just happy to find a good gong book for once. It's rare. Also the shou/ML is not weak
    • Intentions like I said bc the author tried to set everything up so people related to the "characters" suffer from consequences or fix them aka karma. Exhibit:
      Spoiler

      a. MC's father ruined a gay love story by stealing the sword, so the MC steals it back for his father's master while foiling their failed gay love with the MC's own successful one.B. The temple guy even saved the MC bc he I can't remember killed some pregnant person I think C. The doctor puts the parasite in the ML to heal his "lover" and the ML kills the doctor and his "lover" ends up healing and killing the parasite D. The villain had his ideals of the jianghu cultivated from books destroyed bc of 1 literally life threatening experience and decided to END the martial arts world while the "lover" read books and suffered for 20 yrs and realized she shouldn't be alive and helped the ML live. etc.

      [collapse]
Cons:

    • So about those intentions. f*cking shit. I swear I was so tired of reading constant walls of text to explain someone's whole life story in one chapter, sometimes more often than not, we didn't even know this bit*h until this chapter. So the intentions and executions were not always on the same level. Especially around 100-110 the word bombing was a LOT. Sighs.
    • Even with the explanations, let's get real. The politics make no sense. The jianghu is ok. The adventure is lacking but it's ok. Especially with how the emperor just dodged
      Spoiler

killing his brother with.... no revenge from the mc? He might not have been the "mastermind" but.. Are we forgetting who runs this country? Are we forgetting who has the ability to command for the MC's father's death? The king no shit. I mean let's not even forget that a hundred people got kidnapped and the ministers were quiet? No scene about anyone getting mad that the king is overextending his powers over ppl? No? Idk what does a king look like in a wuxia world? Is despot? Idk... Just silence... Yeah it's just not that deep honey so..

      [collapse]
So that is why you should only read this for the romance.

This novel is such a beautiful work, worthy of all praise and fame. The writing is extremely poetic, it's a moving story about a young man who had to grow up overnight and face loneliness and his deepest fears.

Deepest bows to the translator, the translation is so smooth and conveys the author style extremely well! All this work put into each chapter is very visible.

Main character, Wen Heng, was deemed to be a waste as of young but he makes up for it his extremely high intelligence and knowledge in... more>> martial arts. His character growth is very interesting and shows well how living for revenge has never been the answer.

ML is very closed off, having survived horrible tortures since childhood, but his relationship with Wen Heng is extremely sweet spanning over 7 years. They're forced to part and meet again multiple times but each parting and reunion are so moving!

The romance in this novel is very sweet and beautiful, with main characters showing absolute trust in each other, even as they change their emotions for each other are a constant.

The plot is quite comprehensive, author has planned reveals since the earliest chapters but it's not the main focus of the novel. The story tells about growth and maturing of a genius forced to leave the security of the palace and it's done so well.

This novel is 10/10, deserving much more fame!! <<less

Beautiful... loved the storyline and the characters... loved the mystery element in the story even though it was not clearly unraveled even in the end... Beautifully written, this is one of the best wuxia yaoi novels that understands pacing, plot & characterization.
The MC’s revenge & climb up is realistic & believable, there’s no golden finger neither does he win inexplicably. There’s no immortals or magic, homosexuality is not common as per the real world in ancient times (so no mpreg), the villains are not dumb & evil for no reason, while the MC’s love interest (I would say the shou though the author never explicitly defines the roles) is no weak pretty boy but actually helps & is able to defend MC in fights.
There’s no dog blood drama or trauma, this is more like a pot of simmering wine that is best savored & explored in detail.

This is such a touching story definitely worth reading. The ending was a bit anti-climatic for me but still, this is such a good read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this it's quite the page turner hard to put down. It's very well written and translated making it easy to get immersed into that world it's like watching a movie or drama. More Wuxia than politics, intrigue and a sweet little romance. Quality work, kudos to the author and thank you translators!

The writing is pretty solid. The storytelling, the political aspect and everything that revolves around the relationship of the protagonists is good.

The MC is very smart and a strategist even at a very young age but lacking in martial arts ability. The ML is no push over as well, he's in no way considered weak, has a blind trust to his beloved MC. It's funny because from the moment they met, there's already love, care and doting from the MC to our ML. There's 2 big time jumps, but no... more>> worries, all is good and once they meet again, all the love, care and doting is still there.

The side characters were given the chance to shine as well! The "pinky-finger" couple made me cry, their story is bitter-sweet! I like that there's a mini side story after that, so I feel a little relieve after reading that part.

Overall, the translation is good and the story ended very well. <<less

Oct 6th - I’m on chapter 11
I came across this novel because of golden stage and I been trying to find a good novel to read. It shook me because it’s so good. I love the Wuxia theme and the story line so far and I only got to chapter 11.
TBH idk y’all but it made me cry 😭 already I’m so heartbroken and frustrated on the whole situation. Maybe I’m just soft heart & easy after reading so many heart wrenching BL novel 😂 I will keep give another update.

Great read. I love Wen Heng as a character. He always looks ahead, and is always looking at situations from every POV. A Que is also a bit crafty, but he’s his own person who can definitely take care of himself.

Highly recommenced this pretty short read

A very proper wuxia novel, where heroes were made, old grudges, revenge and abit of romance build the plot up. Long time never read something quite serious. It’s a good read, A very proper wuxia novel. Tq

An excellent and immersive leveling up wuxia/jianghu read!

Has a few cliches

  • secret swords / manuals / hidden underground caves with old hermit men who teach long lost arts (with a twist)
  • loved one separation / reunion after time skip
  • martial arts competition
  • poison / persistent illness
But they were done well; cliches are only bad in the hands of bad writers (after all, cliches are cliches because people love 'em)

Spoiler

I enjoyed that the main character never had his energy unsealed in the end... though it did start becoming a bit of a special skill/gold finger at the end

[collapse]

MC is OP af (but it was cool), a very brainy/mastermind type character (my favorite type). ML also had his time to shine (was not a shirking violet and their relationship was very wholesome and super cute) and also grew quite strong.

Side characters/supporting cast weren't too bad, they had interesting moments and stories as well, tho they weren't as fleshed out as they could have been.

I agree with the review that said the politics was a big weakness, though for me it was not the same reason. I feel like the book started strong with the 9 inner guard and how they were incredible martial artists (basically like reading an AU where the imperial palace and jianghu were more integrated, unlike usual backgrounds where the story is either about the imperial palace OR about the jianghu with very little crossover). But unfortunately, the story did fall a bit short (perhaps due to the length of the novel).

Spoiler

The resolution was very open-ended - in the end you still have no clue why the main villain wanted the swords other than the fact that it was a red herring? Unfortunatey, the main villain's motivations weren't clear even in the end when there was a flashback of his actual experiences.

Basically it's like if you read part 1 of a trilogy but the main boss was killed at the end of part 1 and the supposed incredible artifact - say the ring of power in LoTR, was tossed into the tr*sh - because nobody bothered to figure out how it worked.

Basically what's the point of all that backstory about Kunlun if it basically became some random hermit place that the MC/ML will never visit or encounter again?

[collapse]

Overall a great story with an excellent translation. <<less

Of course CWBB does not disappoint...

The relationship between the characters are very well written and the story also feels stronger (more solid?) than in Golden Stage even though it deals with a lot less politics. idk it's just really good and there is no weird or gross stuff going on, any and all bad tropes ZERO. I mean, there's a reason why she's my favourite danmei author

would like to add about the side couple, their story is sad... I want to cry for this side couple story... I think it's a bit unfair for them because the "bad guys" who cause their suffering can't even really be called bad guys... even if that "nie zhu" is dead, this side couple has no way to come back <<less
